“Men don’t like loud women” and the way he reacted to it… I felt that!! My 10y old (“loud”) daughter came home from school this last Halloween. She was allowed to wear her full costume, she was a shadow person, so she basically looked like the blue men but all black. When she came home she told me how much fun she had, but the reason really crushed my soul. The reason she had had so much fun is because for the first time she felt accepted, she said it was because boys couldn’t tell she was a girl, so she was “allowed” to be herself without being criticized or shamed for it. “They played and bumped fists with me”. And just like that, she wishes she were a boy… because “you have more freedom to be yourself” and “I can only be myself at home” … i remember feeling like that as a child, though I couldn’t even be myself at home either because being a tomboy made my parents uncomfortable. I was ALWAYS dressed up from head to toe. Full puffy dress, ponytail with bows and shiny shoes. I remember being so annoyed and uncomfortable with my attire because i couldn’t climb trees, play tag etc, with those shoes without slipping off. I’d have to constantly make sure my dresses didn’t go over my face, I was always afraid someone would see my underwear when I was in the monkey bars etc… it wasn’t until my parents went from being upper middle class to struggling to keep a roof over our heads that I started to wear shorts, pants, jeans, tennis etc, but that was because my parents couldn’t afford to buy me clothes the way the used to, and beggars can’t be choosy so I had to wear hand-me-down clothes from my male cousins. I can’t hold my tears back as I type this 😞

As someone who experienced their entire childhood in an extremely rural Canadian village, (Population 150) I can identify with your daughter's upset associated with missing the Scholastic Book Fair. Reading is such a beautiful thing to be able to enjoy. ❤

@@BooksRebound It was in the southern half of BC. There's a few small villages in that area. I got out of there as soon as I was a teenager and I had an opportunity. Zero confidentiality is why I don't like saying exactly where. That feeling of everyone knowing everything about you is extremely claustrophobic, and anonymity is a beautiful thing. You never know who might read what you write. As a kid, books were definitely my escape.

The loud girls one brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been told to “stop laughing” more times than I can count because my laugh is “too loud.” It’s so sad to think that someone was so miserable that they couldn’t stand an expression of joy like that…and it really makes me want to hug my younger self.
I used to feel really self-conscious of my quite loud laugh, and it still sneaks in sometimes, but over the years, I've been lucky enough to find myself surrounded by people who love my laugh, who are genuinely tickled when I laugh, and it has helped so much. Here's to those of us who let our joy pour from us loudly!
My mum has 4 sisters, and we are ALL 'loud', but most of all, _laugh_ loudly it's a trait the women have, but the brothers and cousins don't.
I've never been ashamed of my loud laugh ... I have suffered from depression and anxiety for over 35 years ... if you can hear my laugh, I'm probably having a good day, and that laughter is priceless.
I work in a busy grocery store and when I hear women laughing in the store I love it. I love that I can hear them from aisles away. I’ve always been a “loud girl” and I’ve been told that I’m bossy (especially at work) and aggressive my whole life. well if you were doing what you were supposed to do I wouldn’t need to be “bossy” and if you respected what I say and truly listened I wouldn’t feel the need to be “aggressive” so I guess it’s not my problem it’s theirs! Keep laughing as loud as you want!
I remember being yelled at for "making too much noise" as a child. Sometimes, the "noise" I was making was that I sneezed.
I got similar: don't laugh so loudly!
You know how I want to die? I want to die laughing loud belly laughs that make your sides hurt and that leave you breathless and teary. And should I stop, to splutter into more laughter!
My daughter recently had a birthday party for a close friend and we had this interaction when we went to find a present for him:
Her- Mommy, his favorite color is pink and his favorite clothes are his rainbow skirt and his pink hoodie, so... we can look at stuff that's not just "boy stuff!"
Me- 'Member, sweetie, we don't believe in "boy stuff" and "girl stuff" in our house. We just need to find stuff that you think he'll love!
Her- Oh, yeah!
We ended up getting him a fuzzy pink cat notebook, fun pens, holographic stickers, a pink light-up ball and a pink stuffed animal. He loved it!
Kids aren't born with hate, we teach it to them!

@@RavenSutcliffe Thank you! That means a lot! I know I'm never gonna be the person who changes the world with an invention or cures a disease. I'll never be a world leader. But I can do my best to make small, everyday differences in the world around me. I can do my best to raise kids who are compassionate and kind and educated, who understand the difference small things can make in the world. I seriously doubt myself as a mom regularly, but it's moments like that, or like when my 13yo son offers to pick up pads/tampons for me when he stops at the market (so I don't have to go with a migraine)... those are the moments I feel like their dad and I must be doing something right.

@@katestark2519 Small everyday differences can mean the world. For a rather drastic example, the (sadly sky high) rates of suicide among LGBT youth are dramatically reduced in a supportive environment. You're raising a kid who may very well save a life. And if your children turn out to be any of the letters, they know that mom still loves them, which means they're a lot safer than they may be. And raising them free of gendered expectations means they're a lot more likely to choose a path in life that makes them happy, not that is expected of them. (And I assure you, if your son has a girlfriend, and when he has female friends, they're also gonna be very grateful that someone raised a man who understands women are people).
My favorite example of "no kindness is too small" is the story of Francine Christophe and the piece of chocolate. It's here on YT and well worth watching without spoilers.

P.S. as for doubting yourself, I think that's a sign of a good parent and generally of an intelligent person. Bad parents never stop to consider they may be in the wrong.

@@kaikai-pb7fh Sorry, you must be confused. Do you often take things so literally? In this context, to be "loud" is equivalent to _any_ kind of "speaking up" that women do. The idea that to speak up for yourself, to advocate for those who can't, and to defend yourself when you need to is considered "loud, unladylike, and unprofessional" is because the men that say these things want women to be "seen, and not heard". This isn't "literally" referring to the actual act of being loud/shouting/screaming. And if a woman needs to do any of those things to be safe, she should be allowed to. Do you get mad at the person in the building that shouts "fire!" when there is a fire, because they shouted? Do you get mad at them when they pull the fire alarm, since it is loud? No, you listen and understand the importance of what is being said before immediately discrediting it because it wasn't the tone you are comfortable with.
The very last video really hit home with me. Parents have the ability to instantly fill their children with hate. They are so impressionable, so honest, so curious.
If their parent had went, "Oh two men can't hold hands. That would be horrible. They'd go to hell, they'd be denying the fact that they want kids, they'd be denying biology, [insert more bigoted things]"
Then the poor 5 year old would INSTANTLY have questions. The fact that your child, your sweet beautiful child is learning life the way it should be lived, and her first questions are "what are their names and powers? Oh yeah why does he have wings" is such a powerful representation of how you and your wife (girlfriend? Either way) parent and how you guide her to be her own person authentically. It is not that she isn't filled with hate. It is that you have taught her what *love* means and that every person deserves it.
Yeah that last one I also don't know why do people lip sync... Also I'm bisexual and my niece asked me about my first love and I felt so uncomfortable because that person was a woman and I didn't know if my niece would go to her parents with questions or if they would tell me that she's too young to know, but I told her nonchalantly and she said "oh yes I have friends who are boys who like each other" and went on with her life not caring
Drag queens usually lip sync for a combination of two reasons:
-They usually don't have voice training (so they can't hit some of the notes, sing for very long, etc)
-They're usually more centered on the dancing -and it's usually based on ballroom, so let me tell you trying to keep that up and have enough breath to dance isn't fun for anyone 😂
Also, props to your niece! I've found kids are usually very matter of fact about these things.

@@marcechavezu oh, because it's part of the performance. A lot of drag queens and kings started off as impersonators -that is, they performed as though they were the famous person whose song they were syncing. It adds to the fun also, someone "sounding" like say, Lady Gaga one minute and Rihanna the next.
Basically the fake voice is part of the costume.
Also Drag is above all performance, "ugly" versions of the song don't go with. Plus, many queens can affect stereotypically female voices while talking but not singing, and that would take away from the illusion.
@@marcechavezu Aside from the explanations given here by others there are drag performers who DO actually sing their own songs. RuPaul and Adore Delano come to mind. Monet Exchange is a trained opera singer. And let's not forget, while everyone can sing to some extent, most folks arent really all that good at it.
@@scibear9944 Yeah of course I do like and have listened to RuPaul, I just haven't been in touch too much with that kind of entertainment when I wrote the comment what came to mind was actually that show with celebrities lip syncing which I personally do not find entertaining but yeah I do get it now, thx!

Someone sent me a clip titled, “Why men really cheat.” It was a clip of a movie in which the wife hysterically asks the husband, “…Why couldn’t it just have been me!” One of the reasons cited by the husband was she’s softer than you, she’s quieter than you… I listened over and over in tears and hysterics myself, because it’s like can I (or anyone) help being who I am (a sometimes loud woman)? THANK YOU - for your kindness and your depth of character! What amazing parents those three bundles have, and how blessed the two of you are with them! THIS WAS TREMENDOUSLY HEALING

So I grew up with...let's say, very little in the way of healthy role models, so now as a parent I spend a lot of my time identifying good parents I can look to to model good parenting for me, because I have nothing but my own wobbly intuition otherwise. I wanted to let you know you're one of those people. Also my daughter loves you, she told me the other day "if I liked boys I'd like him, I'd marry him."

My 8 year dog can paralyze herself if she jumps due to a spine disease. I keep trying to train this, since I can’t communicate what will happen if she jumps. She keeps finding new exciting or upsetting reasons to jump or new higher boundaries she can jump over or off of.
I don’t think she is harder to handle than a child, but some of the struggles are unique and some are the same lol.
Biggest difference is you can leave a dog unattended. In a crate even.
Currently watching this video and saw the part about your toddler peeing on you. Literally just happened to me, changed her and sat back down to work with pee still on my leg🤣🤣🤣

I completely relate to the breakdown over missing book fair day--as does my daughter (currently 25).
As I am cleaning food and water bowls and prepping meds for my dog who just had surgery, I was thinking of this short. And it played. I have a child with autism and a dog…who had surgery that need special care. I feel this in my soul right now.

As hard of hearing person I absolutely loved you're story about Audiobooks. This is what I think about podcasts every day.
We live in Texas and my son was diagnosed with 4 out 5 allergy rating to fire ants. He required 5 years of allergic shots.
My twins were in the NICU for 2 weeks, and my daughter stopped breathing while I was holding her. I freaked the fk out. I patted her on the back are she started breathing again. I have never been that scared in my entire life.
I've heard the Audible PDF story for the second time, and it gave me a giggle fit this time too. Hubs thinks it's because I haven't slept in two days, but he's wrong. It's so funny because this is absolutely something that I would do! 😆

Yep, kids are great and generally lacking in prejudice. Was that lesson kid confused about who I was? No. Was he confused why I couldn't turn the clock back to make his swim lesson last longer? Yes.
I want to be a part of my nephews' lives, but I can't. My sister and her husband are filling their heads with horrible hatred from the church and I can't be around them because I am trans. I can't be myself around them. I must misgender and deadname myself to appease my sister. So I just don't see them, and it hurts.
I laughed WAY too hard at the rant before "...we have a puppy too."

Puppies! I knew a young man who was expecting his first child. He said that his wife could take the baby to her office every day until the kid was two years old, because he would be content to sit in a little chair next to his wife's desk. I let that go, because the idea of reality crashing in on him was too much fun to think about. However, I wondered why he hadn't noticed the absence of two-year-olds sitting quietly next to their mothers' desks.
Even if one of her questions ever happens to be about why they are holding hands, that is a TEACHABLE MOMENT.
And you can answer in a bigoted way without even betraying your hate- the guy in the right can't fly, so his friend is helping him. The guy on the right is scared (I know, I know, rEaL mEn doN't feEl feAr) and his friend is lending him some confidence.
My kids know that I love them. That nothing they could EVER do will change that. If they murderer someone, I will be highly disappointed in them forever, but I will sit behind them in court, I will support them through every part of it.
I will hate what they have done, but to hate my child? No. Not a possibility.
So, to imagine hating who their future self is, who they love? Nope. Not even capable of that thought process.
First, it's not my business who sleeps in my adult child's bed, and that's a gross thought to have at all, regardless of which gender, or none, or both, that happens to be.
Second, what happened to wanting your child to be happy? Are these parents who reject their LGBTQ+ children really out there thinking that they could never be happy in a non-normative relationship?
I want to blame religion, but the "anti-homosexuality" passages in the bible are on really shaky ground from an exegesis perspective. Someone influential changed the primary understanding of those passages to be about "homosexuality" rather than pederasty or temple prostitution.
Someone co-opted the religion in service of bigotry.
Half of all homeless youth are queer; do so many parents only love the cishet child they imagined they were raising, or does bigotry actually silence a parent's love? I'd consider social pressure, but that would mean they decided the neighbors would accept them having a homeless child more easily than a queer one. Do the people stoking the flames of bigotry influence parents more than concern for the wellbeing of their children?
One of my earliest memories i have... is going to the Christoper Street Day in Berlin with my Dad and Cousin (CSD Berlin is the Berlin Pride) i remember asking my Dad why that one man is dressed like a flamingo.... and he said because he's happy.... 7 years later i came out to my Dad now as a 33 year old married to my Husband for almost a decade and we couldn't be happier... teach your kids kindness and acceptance and that they don't have to hide who they are.... it won't just lead to them being happier adults... but it might just save their or someone elses life

On the painted nails: If there is anything you've wanted to change about your appearance that is considered unconventional, do it. I've had blue hair for half a year and get at least 3 compliments on the hair alone per week. Not in a creepy, cat-calling way, just: "Hey, I just wanted you to know that your hair looks awesome."
If you look unconventional, the people who dislike it will just turn their nose and complain about you behind closed doors, but the people who like it will make your day so much sweeter.
I also am allergic to grass. I have never met anyone else, that is. Grass is everywhere, and I can't walk outside in the grass without something covering my skin. The rash it gives me is horrific.
I am an introverted HSP with anxiety - I was never "the loud" child. I was always praised for never making a fuzz and that has made some problems for me later in life.
But my best friend was "the loud" child. She still is. When she was young and she had one of those teacher-parent meetings her teacher said that she was loud. And my friends mom snapped back at the teacher "you only say that because she is a girl! If she was a boy, you wouldn't bat an eye at her loud and spirited personality!"
I love that she is my friend. We are two sides of the same coin. She brings out the brave and honest in me and I, the soft and gentle, in her.
I promise I love it over here you're shorts are the highlight of my day when I'm going through it 💗

When my kids were little I was at a fast food place with them for a treat. Close by was a woman with her kids and at another table was a man on his own. It turned out the adults were deaf and sitting that way so they could talk easier. I could see my 7 year old watching them intently and was working out in my mind how to explain to her that people talked in different ways and that's how people that couldn't hear did it. Finally she turned to me with a confused face and asked "Mommy, why is that man bald?". I think that about covers it.
I wonder if they have the written version of audiobooks absolutely slayed me! 🤣 Totally something my sister or I would say. 🥰
I was like your daughter. I got chicken pox the week we were delivering lady bugs around our neighborhoods. I watched the other kids from my window. I hated missing school!

Re: banning drag shows. I grew up in a place where literally the highlight of the year was going to a drag show. I mean, they called it a pantomime, but let's be clear here, the main comic female was a man in drag and the main male character was played by a woman. It was SO FREAKING FUN! There would be audience participation and lots of yelling and laughter. And it was specifically for the kids.
And guess what? That entire country of children turned out just fine.
Except freaking Boris Johnson. I bet he never went to a pantomime.
RE: Nails: If I see a guy with his nails done, I don't think that complimenting them is going to possibly put me in a dangerous situation.
I absolutely hate people that say a pet is just as much work as a kid
as a person who is also allergic to all types of grass as a side effect of a physical disorder that I have, I really resonated with that first story.

I get compliments quite often that aren't creepy cat calling situations because my backpack is a literal dinosaur. A T Rex to be exact. Named Turkleton. I call him Turk for short. And people LOVE him. Adults love him, kids love him. Everybody loves him. The compliments and the excited faces and voices from people make my day every time.

going through now. I have four girls, older than your kids, and by George they are loud as well, not one dainty or little. I’ kinda glad I don’t have boys cuz I don’t think I would’ve survived the chaos that would have ensued.
I think kids are just loud, being dainty and quiet isn't something that comes naturally to anyone. I have two little boys they are all over the place all the time

Every single one is awesome! Speaking about parents, kids, students, parenting. How our views on what and how we look is good enough when we have infants and toddlers. (Thank goodness those stages end pretty quickly 😅😊) Now that both of my sons are grown men in their twenties and one in his early thirties life is awesome! Yes, you miss those days believe it or not. Not the not sleeping part etc. Just the innocence and how much they love learning about everything around them. Thank you for being a wonderful professor and father to your children and students.

Fwiw, I am also allergic to grass. All types. No clue why.
It no longer sends me into anaphylactic shock, but I do get some truly horrific, painful rashes on my legs during the warmer months.
I’m in my mid-50’s & wasn’t correctly diagnosed as having grass allergies til about twelve years ago. (Mind you, it took doctors almost 34 years to figure out I had c-EDS, ADHD, PTSD & mild OCD).
All of which will likely either convince people that I have an alphabet for a body, or that I’ve got a disturbing fetish for letters. 😅

If your parents can't do that then they don't deserve you. Please don't listen to the people who think you need to put up with being treated badly because they are "family".

@@MissDirect thank you, that means so much to me. I'm working on improving my self esteem as well as healing from my childhood. I know I have a long way to go in terms of taking care of my mental illnesses, and also transitioning. But I'm getting there, and I'm doing so much better and getting much closer than before.

I mean to be _fair,_ I can understand wondering if audible had pdfs specifically for all the audio books. I really don't see pdfs like, anywhere anymore. I just recently had to get a pdf reader on my phone and I used it one time because the thing I got it for was not the thing I thought I was getting.
