How Kevin Magnussen landed a shock F1 return with Haas for 2022

- Kevin Magnussen looked to be firmly in the camp of ‘exiled F1 driver’ after he lost his drive at the end of 2020 because Haas needed paying drivers.
But with Nikita Mazepin axed between the 2022 pre-season tests, Haas needed a replacement.
And it has turned to the same driver it had to move aside for the Russian just over a year ago.
In this video we look at how the deal happened, why it makes sense, and what it means for Mick Schumacher

I'm so happy for this news, and that Peugeot is letting Kmag go without any penalty is wholesome.
To me that's the best part. Behind the scenes there was probably a bit more friction (contracts and whatnot), but that decision shows at least a surface level of caring of their drivers.
He really put those teams in a bind. That they OK'd that is a huge deal. Good for Chip Ganasi, he is a good guy
@@KingHoborg Peugeot knew him leaving to chase P10 at best instead of chasing an LM win is penalty enough.
@@kartaltoth684 At first I had hype about Peagueot, but it seems it's costing them more time to develop their new car. Seems like Porsche is doing better eith their protoype than Peagueot(think I misspronounced)
A real racing company understands
I'm really hoping the Haas car is good this year, since it would be great to see how much potential both Schumacher and Magnussen have.
They had the most wind tunnel time
don't worry, it won't be
I dont think its the case
Agnussen is a great driver, proven before.
I don't think they'll be last this year, unless they keep screwing up pit stops
@@OscyJack- great enough for you to not remember his name?
P5 in his first race back speaks volumes to not just the car, but KMag's ability to adapt. Incredible.
Only when his return was announced I realised how much I wanted him back in F1. So happy !
Ditto ! 😃
I feel the same way. I`m Danish, so this season, which I was already looking forward to, is going to be even more exciting. So happy too. Take care mate.
Actually yes, he is always fun/interesting to watch - even if driving a slow car.
Really happy for him, Mick's got a real tough challenge ahead
A real good challenge for Mick. Will be interesting to watch.
Yuuup, Mick will learn the killer instinct 👌🏽
I really hyped for Mick but i'm sure he can be better than Magnussen, i've seen his junior career and he got much better everytime he has very good rivals like Illot in F2.
Mathew Gunning yup. This really suits Haas and Ferrari. With the way Sainz is driving, Mick is no guarantee to have that seat
@@TheMatGun yes. Mick Schumacher gonna get outclassed for sure.
This season would've made history just for the fact that Alex and Kevin have made a return
i'm so happy for him, we never got to see his true potential because of all the cars he's been given but hopefully haas gives him the car he needs and DESERVES
Wow, I didn't think you'd comment here. Love your vids!
@@idontknow4260 thank you!

Finally someone who has a brain, and the capacity to think, my thoughts are the same as yours, I love Kmag, really big fan of his. I'm a brazilian, and I'm so sadened by some of my countrymen's opinions on this matter, I even saw a guy saying that the Russian Eggman is better than Kmag, and also saw one of my personal favourites channels say some very bad shit about Kmag and about the whole situation

The most intelligent choice... Knows the team, loves the sport, and has experience...
“But Guenther called me and ruined all that”
I love that he already started making jokes 😂
Love K-Mag's wry sense of humor. Similar to Kimi's
@@josephcoleman57 His father Jan Magnussen has also that kind of humour
There was a time I felt KMag didn't deserved a spot at HAAS anymore. But having seen how Mazepin performed, I'm quite glad to see KMag back on the grid!
But the question remains whether or not HAAS has a decent enough car prepared and are going to have for this season.
Magnussen’s junior careers is one of the best and he has a podium on debut, he’s also beaten Grosjean consistently and out-qualified Jenson Button, it was clear that Haas dropped him because of monetary reasons, he’s always been deserving of a spot in the grid
K Mag is a beast but unfortunately his car wasn’t competitive enough in the past
@@danyb97 Yeah he never has a car near the top of the midfield with the exception of 2014 and 2018
What do you base that on? When Hass did well too quickly everyone blamed them for copying Ferrari and not a soul mentioned how spectacular the drivers were. When the car became under-powered and completely undrivable, everybody kept blaming the drivers for everything, failing to realize how they had to constantly perform at 105% just to keep the piece of crap on track. There are half a field of drivers who deserve it less so what the heck?
I understand that feeling as well. When Haas had a POS car, the drivers had to take so much more risk to just keep up, which makes it seem like the drivers were "bad". KMag was always aggressive, trying for every advantage - obviously frustrated by the state of the car, and that got him in trouble sometimes. Grosjean, well, you could argue the same, however he definitely made some HUGE mistakes - bad car or not - so I do feel like he needed a break from F1.
Bottom line is, I really want Haas to do well this year. Now I like both drivers, and I love a good underdog story.
I'm sad the peugeot is losing magnusson but I'm also happy he got a seat in f1 again. I'm conflicted.
He's top of the timings at the end of day two of testing.
He didn't need time to get back into the groove.
Hopefully, Haas gives him a good enough car for the season ahead.
KM needs a competitive drive to show off his talent
Happy to see KMag back in the paddock. But can we all take a moment to appreciate the beauty of that Peugeot? ❤️
The Haas without the blue stripes is now one of the better liveries of this year, very excited.
And he starts out with a P7 qualifier and P5 finish - massive!
Good for K Mag, good for all of us. 👍
Glad to see K-Mag back. Always loved his no prisoners taken style of racing. Hope Haas built good car so he can show why he was so highly rated.
Happy to see K-Mag back! Hopefully the Haas is up to being a more competitive car this year!
If you look at testing times haas is not doing too bad at all. Which is nice to see. Day two of testing KMAG went 9th with Mick going 12th

Qualifying as number seven in he’s comeback, what a great performance…. It just shows he’s great potential after have been away from the formula one, because HAAS needed Mazepins dad to sponsor them. Finally HAAS have a driver beside Schumacher that they can rely on… welcome back K-Mag!!! 🇩🇰❤️🇩🇰✌️
Pretty excited to see Magnussen coming back. This is awesome. Hopefully Haas can do some awesome work this year.
Huge surprise to see his return but I couldn't be happier!!! As an American I am so glad to support our Team!!!! I'm so excited to see what Magnussen will do with the new car!!
I'm so sad not seeing him race for Peugeot in le Mans, but so excited for his return in f1
Finally! A good senior driver and a fast rookie. Hope they will score some points this year.
really happy for both of them I'm sure they'll have a great relationship that will end up being cast as rivalry in drive to survive lol
Thats pretty awesome that those teams let him go back to formula 1 despite having the legal standing to keep him.
I imagine they had a good discussion - it could be equally tough for them if they reject the offer and they end up with a demotivated driver they have to replace later. I’m guessing there’s no lack of good drivers that can backfill him in LMP! I know a lot of ppl speak highly of KMag’s skills, but I’m sure there are many at a similar level.
It’s so great to see Kevin again in Formula 1. Now HAAS have a real driver line-up for the season. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
He ran .3 faster than Sainz when Haas was running after the regular end of the testing session!!
Well, apparently he did set the fastest time today.
Super happy about this, K Mag is great to watch.
Think about it. KMag was in a car that was built around Mazepin and although he set the fastest lap when the track was empty, it's still amazing he was able to do that! He is more deserving to have that seat!!
First day back and already posted the quickest time in Bahrain testing. Can't wait to get this F1 season started
Ohh boy!! He set the fastest lap of testing 🔥🔥
Yes, yes, yes. Why the fuzz ?
@@5855brot Good that he showed that everyone is sandbagging.. I hope i am right here.. or else this would be a super interesting season.
I think Magnessan will definately help Haas improve their program . He has the expirence to help improve the development of the chassis.
Hey i'm new to f1. Why is magnussen considered a "veteran" when he also only has a year of experience in f1?
@@andytabala6791 he has driven many seasons before, he just had a year long break and now he has rejoined the sport
@@magnusgissel860 yup, i know that now. But thanks for taking the time to reply!
most underrated driver of this generation, has championship material, was really really close to button in terms of pace but had a setback in 15 obv. so he needed to find his groove back in 16 and got. better and better in 17 and 18
He set the fastest time of the day, so I'd say he is reacclimating well. Good for him.
I like Kmag, I honestly think he's underrated and a bloody fast driver on his day

The new look and regulations of the cars
Returning drivers Albon and KMag
I really hope this season doesn’t fall flat, bc the build up to the season has been *insane*
Really enjoying seeing K-Mag back in the HAAs car. A lot of potential for HAAs this year.
The team that let him come back to F1 are amazing.
Hell yes. The fact that HAAS had Mazepin racing and sponsoring the team is completely insane.
Also nice to have the lap1 lightning back. :)
I'm actually so stoked for Haas this year. I love Mick, I love KMag, I love a good underdog story - so I can only hope they have a great season, I think they deserve it.
SUPER PROUD OF K MAG FOR BEING BACK AND SHOWING HE DESERVES THAT SEAT MORE THEN ANYONE 👏 WELL DONE FROM AMERICA 🇺🇸 MATE
Also sets fastest time in extra hour of testing!!!
Doesn't matter now if they have a competitive car or not. It will be spicy between the hardest racer of modern times versus Schumacher II
2019 Haas was such a disappointing machine, it was so rapid but tyre wear was absolutely horrendous. Even after all that, we've seen KMag grab a couple of P4 and P5 in Q in the backmarker Haas. That's why I still believe that he's better than half of the grid
P5 in his first race back. Not bad!
The benefit of Magussen is that he has a significant amount of
F1 experience which a rookie would not. That counts for a lot,
pressure is huge enough for those with experience imagine a rookie which doesn’t know a team well, the tracks the car,
commitments with press…
Cmon Haas!! Let's see a good year!! Get them points!
I'm very happy to see him back i can't wait the when season is started it's couple of days left until next sunday race
That Peugeot prototype is so beautiful.
Just got back from the end of practice. Magnussen is P1 baby!
Disappointed for young guys like Piastri and Fittipaldi but I think Kevin is a good pick
No piastri was a good pick bro we don’t need another old shit driver on the grid
@@James__bond007 haas needs an experienced driver to help steer them in the right direction
@@James__bond007 Fuck Piastri.
@@James__bond007 Right, alpine will suddenly give up Piastri when they didn't do so to get the Alfa Romeo seat for him, typical logic of someone who literally knows nothing other than the score sheet.
Piastri had no chance as he's part of Alpine
Fittipaldi would just be another Mazepin
I can see good things for him a likable chap look forward to seeing him in the new car fingers cross for a good car.
K-mag, back, with the fastest time
probably the best option as he already knows the team well, how they work and is experienced. Hopefully he can get some points and teach Mick hands on as well.
Magnus needs to look after himself, not nursemaid Mick ...
@@sking2173 Of course, but Mick will benefir more from having him as another team driver than he did with Mazepin. We'll see soon how it goes! Cheers!
Fastest lap in his first day in the car and better reliability than Mick had so it's definitely a positive start for him.
Good video, the first one I have seen that appears about accurate on Magnussen's return. Other videos on CZcams concerning Magnussen's return before this, appears rushed and mainly rely on Drive to Survive or something like that for their "facts".
I want to see Magnussen get a win this season. I want to see Haas flourish and succeed over the next few years. Now that Mazepin is gone, Haas can get back to doing what they can to get some wins.
that seems a bit too ambitious
@@dylembo2912 Fastest time at testing. Sure, it's testing, but even if it means they're in the midfield, a win could happen.
@@christianhildalgo not to be annoying, but if you've watched formula 1 for more than 2 years, testing means absolutely nothing. at one point in 2020 testing, alfa topped the sheets.
@@dylembo2912 It's almost as if I did say that in the comment. However, if it's topping the sheets, it's probably not the worse car out there. All I'm saying is that even a lower midfield car (5-6th in the WCC) has a shot at a win with the right conditions so it is not as ambitious as you made it look.
Like hell, just last year, McLaren 1-2 (4th WCC), Alpine win and p3 (5th), AlphaTauri p3 and a win the year before (6th WCC), Aston Martin p2 in Baku (7th WCC). And even if most people don't consider it legitimate, for good reasons, Williams (8th WCC) p2 in Spa.
Wishing him good fortune, and hope the team can provide both drivers with a competitive car..
Did not see him returning at all. Lets see how he does this year. Nice video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the vid, nice to hear something real and not speculative.
So far he's doing very well in his lap times.
Yes! Propps to Gannassi and Peugeot for letting K Mag race in F1...🏁
After watching episode 4 of DTS this must be an extreme breath of fresh air for the team, Mazepin seemed like cancer.
Being a bright test driver for McLaren then a rookie shining from the very first race Kevin had the halmarks of a great career in F1.
Being sidelined due to cost handicap and cut short by a pay driver was not the way he should spend and exit in F1.
Now Kevin has a shot to set things right and make his stay in F1 a brighter more positive memorable one.
Goodluck Kevin and the HAAS team keeping the small team dream and American F1 connection alive.
Honestly feel this is a blessing in disguise. Mick now has a driver to look to, Kevin can almost coach and mentor him. Now with Mazepin and the negative atmosphere he brought to the team gone, hopefully we'll see Mick flourish and mature this year. And Kevin too with his second chance.
Magnus’ job will be to make Mick the number 2 driver on the team, and outperform him at every race.
I like K Mag.
He seems a decent, level headed bloke.
I am pleased he is back in F1.
☮
So great bringing Magnusson back!!
I"ll say it again, I really want to see Haas be competitive at least as back markers. It gets tiring watching Haas be P19 & P20
Well he just got the fastest lap in day 2 of testing so damn...
Great news! Good to see him back.
And like that, I'm a Haas fan again.
It is indeed good to see him back.
KMag was the perfect choice and I'm embarrassed to admit I hadn't even considered him. He's an experienced and fast driver but his real benefit comes from knowing the team and the engineers so that he could get up to speed quickly and boy did he -- P1 on his first day in the car. Now he did have the advantage of driving late in the day when it was cooler and the track was probably at its best, but to put it P1 on your first day in the car is huge. I have to believe that whoever suggested KMag was as pumped up as Kevin was. Let's hope the Haas can give them a shot at genuine mid pack results with maybe a podium or two.
I would love for HAAS to be somewhat competitive. I think K-Mag can be a great teammate for Mick to learn from. Always loved K-Mag
Really want to see HAAS leading the midfield this year, probably that's too much to ask from a team that's into so much of trouble but hey this is F1, plus first season with the new rules, anything can happen.
I think what they should aim for is at least where Aston Martin were last year
Occasional point scorers with potential for higher at times is a good benchmark for them
Midfield might be pushing it but picking up points and maybe, with a bit of luck on their side, a podium might be possible.
Man I hope that he will rejoin the Peugeot Le Mans team .. he would fit in so perfectly !!!
That's a good news. Finally Mick will have a good pilot to compare with. And magnussen knows the team.
I hope the Haas car can perform up to Kevin's talent.
Something else about Magnussen and Schumacher is that KMag can help Mick in ways no other driver could, seeing how both are 2nd generation drivers of rather legendary drivers (Jan Magnussen is pretty much a legend in his own right in endurance), and he could help Mick personally if the relationship is good enough.
Well done to everyone involved. I hope Haas considers what K Mag has given up by returning to F1 and doesn’t remove him at their first chance to upgrade. I hope he and Mick have a good year.
Wow, your channel sure has blown up a lot.
And what a return he had.
Ran out of motivation to run around the back. But I’m here to do it again
Honestly surprised it was KMag thought for sure it was gonna be Gio cuz KMag didn't want anymore and Gio was a more recent F1 forced departure but either way glad to see him back considering he didn't deserve the initial dropping anyways
I always thought Mag was a good driver and hated to see his departure from F1. Its great to see see him back!
i will not miss maz for a single second.kevin and mick are a awesome line up.i could not imagine how frustrating it must of been for mick having maz as a team mate.lets go haas!!!
Really happy to see him back but kinda sad that he left a potentially lemans winning drive with Peugeot
Welcome back Magnum!
We knew we missed you
K.Mag is extremely underrated.
A good seat in F1 is all about timing.
He got bumped by Fernando Alonso @ McLaren, inherited a POS Lotus/ Renault Chassis when he landed at Renault with Palmer...
Unfortunately, HAAS is a nightmare in itself..
Hopefully he will be able to maximize his potential this year...
