Pardon my confusion 😳… I have this 10th edition of Passmans book. Same cover as shown on this podcast. But the last copyright date is 2019. Is 2019 what you’re calling recent? A rewrite from four years ago isn’t what I’d call recent. Is there a 2023 edition? 🤔
One of the questions I wished you asked which may be dumb but at the same time I feel like could make sense is if there is a circumstance where signing a 360 could be a good idea. Like for example he said they take parts of everything but is there any rate and circumstance where he would say yea this may be a good deal. I’m in school so I think of it like in terms of that way. A comp sci major may take out 40k in loans but one year will make 70k out of school possibly and then more over the long haul. Is there any approach with a 360 like that. Like yea their going to take 10 percent out of your tour but it’s possible you make 80k from the tour. Like I said may be a dumb question but I’m just not sure
Signing a 360 deal can be beneficial under certain circumstances. If an artist is early in their career and doesn't have the capital or connections to promote their work, a 360 deal can provide the necessary resources and support to build their brand and reach a larger audience. The label's involvement in multiple revenue streams means they have an incentive to promote the artist aggressively. Consider the deal's terms carefully-what percentage they take, for how long, and what they're offering in terms of advance, marketing, touring support, etc. Also, assess whether the label has a solid track record with other artists in similar deals. If you're confident the label will significantly boost your earnings and career prospects, and the terms are fair, a 360 deal might be a good investment in your future, much like taking out a loan for education in anticipation of higher earnings later on. And if you have to work so hard just to attract the attention of a record company, what the hell is the point of having a recording contract in the first place?
Hi Bradley! We totally get where you're coming from, and it can indeed feel a bit frustrating. Paying for access to a database for contacts does seem like a leap of faith, especially when responses aren't guaranteed. However, you can think of it as an investment in your music career. It's all about getting your foot in the door and creating opportunities that wouldn't exist otherwise. Attracting the attention of a record company [if that is in fact what you want to pursue] often requires a lot of effort and persistence, but the potential rewards can be significant. A recording contract can provide resources, support, and a platform that might be challenging to achieve on your own. It's about partnership and amplification of your talent. Remember, every successful artist started somewhere, facing similar challenges and uncertainties. The key is to stay passionate, keep pushing forward, and explore every avenue to get your music heard. Who knows? The next contact you reach out to might just be the one that propels your career to new heights. Flipping that coin, maybe going after a record deal is not the way to go for you and it's about building a sustainable business for your career. Hello there and thanks so much for your comment. When Don is referring to "we" during the interview, he's referring to everyone working in the industry. We don’t think it would apply there unless there is a translation of the book available there in your country. You would need to research that. It has come out in several countries in the past. Thank for your question and being an ‘Insider’. MUBUTV
His premise that 40-50 dollars per year in the heyday of the music business to 84 dollars per year spent per person per year on music is flawed. Firstly 44 dollars adjusted for inflation from 1995 to 2023 is about 84 dollars. Secondly the 44 dollars spent in ‘95 would have been three or four CDs. That revenue was produced by 1-4 artists in 1995. The 84 present day dollars produced by streaming is produced by music from all of the artists available on all streaming services. So there is no revenue gain industry wide. Streaming just made robbing artists of their cut a lot easier by using the shell game the music business has created. I can stream Jelly Roll to todays latest release for a subscription fee. In the 90s I listened to what I owned or was exposed to on the radio.
The inflation adjustment you've mentioned is a valid point; $44 in 1995 does have a very different value compared to 2023. It's also a fair observation that the revenue from music purchases in the '90s would be distributed among fewer artists compared to today's streaming model, where revenue is spread across many more artists. I understand you guys need money and they help, they just take attention away from the topic being discussed. It’s not just you guys. It’s everyone that has a sponsorship ad like Joe and his alpha brain ad after every 10 minutes. I will just buy the book and read it. I don’t need to listen to an interview. I was interested but lost interest after sponsorship gap.
A Songwriter spends his or her entire life working and creating music. Only to turn around and have to compete over art with other people to gain fractions of penny's from stream listens? Steaming is NOT revolutionary. Its a goddamn curse! This book so far has taught me one thing. The music business is completely ass backwards which is why so many quit. Better laws need to be put in place. Remember Spotify is Napster. Same asshole, same concept, different company. People need to get back to buying albums or buying music. They need to own it so they will appreciate it more. In their car / on their music player / on their record player. You don't fall in love with songs that are streamed. You forget about them and then you rabbit hole to the next like a slot machine fixation. Songwriters and musicians don't spend countless months creating just so they can be a slot machine. They want people to at least appreciate it. Streaming will NEVER Let you appreciate anything.

One of the questions I wished you asked which may be dumb but at the same time I feel like could make sense is if there is a circumstance where signing a 360 could be a good idea. Like for example he said they take parts of everything but is there any rate and circumstance where he would say yea this may be a good deal. I’m in school so I think of it like in terms of that way. A comp sci major may take out 40k in loans but one year will make 70k out of school possibly and then more over the long haul. Is there any approach with a 360 like that. Like yea their going to take 10 percent out of your tour but it’s possible you make 80k from the tour. Like I said may be a dumb question but I’m just not sure
Signing a 360 deal can be beneficial under certain circumstances. If an artist is early in their career and doesn't have the capital or connections to promote their work, a 360 deal can provide the necessary resources and support to build their brand and reach a larger audience. The label's involvement in multiple revenue streams means they have an incentive to promote the artist aggressively.
Consider the deal's terms carefully-what percentage they take, for how long, and what they're offering in terms of advance, marketing, touring support, etc. Also, assess whether the label has a solid track record with other artists in similar deals.
If you're confident the label will significantly boost your earnings and career prospects, and the terms are fair, a 360 deal might be a good investment in your future, much like taking out a loan for education in anticipation of higher earnings later on. So you're telling me that I need to pay some type of fee to access a database of contact info that may or may not pick up the phone or respond back to you if you're trying to take your music career to the next level? And if you have to work so hard just to attract the attention of a record company, what the hell is the point of having a recording contract in the first place?
Hi Bradley! We totally get where you're coming from, and it can indeed feel a bit frustrating. Paying for access to a database for contacts does seem like a leap of faith, especially when responses aren't guaranteed. However, you can think of it as an investment in your music career. It's all about getting your foot in the door and creating opportunities that wouldn't exist otherwise.
Attracting the attention of a record company [if that is in fact what you want to pursue] often requires a lot of effort and persistence, but the potential rewards can be significant. A recording contract can provide resources, support, and a platform that might be challenging to achieve on your own. It's about partnership and amplification of your talent.
Remember, every successful artist started somewhere, facing similar challenges and uncertainties. The key is to stay passionate, keep pushing forward, and explore every avenue to get your music heard. Who knows? The next contact you reach out to might just be the one that propels your career to new heights.
Flipping that coin, maybe going after a record deal is not the way to go for you and it's about building a sustainable business for your career. A lot of acts and artists are doing just that without the help of a record company. So just some food for thought.

His premise that 40-50 dollars per year in the heyday of the music business to 84 dollars per year spent per person per year on music is flawed. Firstly 44 dollars adjusted for inflation from 1995 to 2023 is about 84 dollars. Secondly the 44 dollars spent in ‘95 would have been three or four CDs. That revenue was produced by 1-4 artists in 1995. The 84 present day dollars produced by streaming is produced by music from all of the artists available on all streaming services. So there is no revenue gain industry wide. Streaming just made robbing artists of their cut a lot easier by using the shell game the music business has created. I can stream Jelly Roll to todays latest release for a subscription fee. In the 90s I listened to what I owned or was exposed to on the radio.
The inflation adjustment you've mentioned is a valid point; $44 in 1995 does have a very different value compared to 2023. It's also a fair observation that the revenue from music purchases in the '90s would be distributed among fewer artists compared to today's streaming model, where revenue is spread across many more artists. I understand you guys need money and they help, they just take attention away from the topic being discussed. It’s not just you guys. A Songwriter spends his or her entire life working and creating music. Only to turn around and have to compete over art with other people to gain fractions of penny's from stream listens? Steaming is NOT revolutionary. Its a goddamn curse! This book so far has taught me one thing. The music business is completely ass backwards which is why so many quit. Better laws need to be put in place. Remember Spotify is Napster. Same asshole, same concept, different company. People need to get back to buying albums or buying music. They need to own it so they will appreciate it more. In their car / on their music player / on their record player. You don't fall in love with songs that are streamed. You forget about them and then you rabbit hole to the next like a slot machine fixation. Songwriters and musicians don't spend countless months creating just so they can be a slot machine. They want people to at least appreciate it. Streaming will NEVER Let you appreciate anything.
