- This week I pull seven key facts from Pharrell Williams that every artist should know about the music industry but perhaps just overlooks because of the excitement of creating music in the beginning. Pharrell has a sit down with United Masters founder and CEO Steve Stoute and to have a discussion about the music industry and where it's headed and what could be better about it. As usual, I break down the facts about the music industry and give Pharrell a little praise on some of these topics that he speaks on. Watch Pharrell Williams mentions 7 facts you must know about the music industry right here on the music money makeover show!

"Waiting for inspiration is like waiting at the airport for a train"
Do the work and everything will work itself out
You can catch a train at Manchester Airport.
I was taken advantage of in 2013 when I created a music channel with a mobile music app company, that gain over 700,000 plays in the first week. I was an intern at the time but was never given full credit on the project but received college credits.
One thing I learned, never put all of your creative ideals out in the open when working with CEO's or anyone, unless they compensate you fairly with everything in writing.
They took advantage because they knew I would work harder than the next. Don't let your hard work over exceed your judgement, get everything in writing.... EVERYTHING!!!
Absolutely
700k clicks is not even 1000$ bro🤷🏽♂️
💯 FACTS
Been there before, lost millions, played on many big hits, didn't even get credit.
But, when I left the company, I took my sound and experience with me and the company crashed LOL.
Today, you have to sign a NDA, a non-disclosure agreement period.
😅
The best thing you said is that its about knowing what to ask for. Do an hour long video on what a musician wants, what an artist wants, a producer, a band, a label etc
I love this content!!! Pharrell has lasted decades in the game; there's always a reason why certain creators endure.....
Yes there is.
When was his last record.....
Pharrell vs TI on Verzuz

This is a great video. Bottom line, You You have to be smart in this business. Learn as much as you can first before anything. If not, the snakes and vultures are going to eat you alive leaving absolutely nothing but the bones. Awareness is 🔑...
Thanks for your knowledge and advice King👑
Absolutely!

Pharrell Williams is a genius! Same for Chad Hugo.
Freakin dumb. That was Jesus speaking of Christianity. The harvest is siners [ready], the workers are Christian ministers. [Few]
Same for Casey Graham
👍🏿💯 AGREED SERIOUSLY

You are spitting the truth brotha! I survived the old business model and eventually got my publishing and all but one of my masters back (I should have that one soon too). I totally agree with you on things like admin deals etc.. There are advantages to working with companies who are already well versed in collecting from all revenue sources, but the key is you must control it and understand how to leverage it. Keep up that good game!! Mix
Insightful 🔉
Great videos. Glad you are around. Lot of this is the same for any business. Someone can know food like the sh!t, but if yoiu don't know business and whatch your numbers, cash flow and ROI then you got no bussiness having a restaurant.
Thank you! There's so many gems in that interview and your breakdowns/explanations made it easier for me to truly comprehend 🙏🏾
That's what I like to hear! I'm glad I could help!
Just finding this. Preciate it bruh 🙏🏾
Thank you for sharing these / ALLL YOUR VIDEOS ARE APPRECIATED 👍🏿 REALLY REAL TALK YOU ARE APPRECIATED
Steve Stoute always sees the game from an intelligent perspective and that’s what I appreciate about him the most
Right on Pharrell, God is the only master! Amen my brother!
Love your content. Been looking for a source like this to explain the ins and outs of the business. I am not a musician, but am an aspiring creator and am always open to getting guidance from those more seasoned...Merciii🌟
I appreciate this so much thankyou✔️✊🏾
The bank loan analogy isn't a good analogy at all. When the bank loans you money, they don't market, promote, distribute or manage your product or business in any way. They simply loan the money and have no involvement in the business. A record company (at least traditionally) does all of those things, in the hopes of creating a hugely successful product and brand. I'm not commenting on whether they're fair about it or whether someone should or shouldn't sign a record deal - I'm just saying that a bank loan shouldn't be compared to a record deal. They're completely different concepts.
Great point.
It's similar to the fact that this isn't your money. Even though they are doing things for you, they are doing it so that they can recoup their money. When you hear these guys have a massive deal, the company advanced them the money. They don't have that cash. I think that is what they are referring to. He's right to demonize them because after all of that work - you don't the masters. So basically they are renting you out and in the end, you don't have a home when you were the one who made the music.
I just want to get signed and have the label do all the work.
Precise editing and great info. Thanks for making this vid!
I love this content man ❤️. Love the 411. I have been producing and managing all of my work since I was 18. Now I am 31.
I own all of my masters and still figuring out all of this shit out on my own but this video has given me the reassurance that I am in the right path as an independent artist, producer and record label.
I also think that when it comes to being successful as a creative individually spirituality is also very important because we all need peace of mind in order to create and keep creating, is highly important to feel in tune whit your inner self first and have an organized mind and coherence on what you want in your life and were you wanna go and when you are prepared you can make better decisions and from there decide when, were and with who you want to work with on the short term or long term. As a visionary I think that's what all this is about.
It’s a must to listen to this everyday.. jewels nothing but 💎✌🏾
Its packed full of information
💯 AGREED 👍🏿 SERIOUSLY
This channel>>>>
Nice info!
Another royalty that follows the master is the mechanical royalty.
This royalty is for vinyl records, CD's, DVD's and downloads.
The performance royalties are also for radio and streaming.
After this, you have to come with the fire basically.
When you got the fire, people will talk about you and want your services.
Thanks a bunch! That is exactly why I have not signed or sought a contract deal yet. A company(s) that I dealt with 20 plus years ago went out of business and or the previous audio art was agreed upon and all parties parted ways satisfied. My biggest take aways following this video are, know your ish, who you are and what your responsibility is as a creator from a business standpoint and a creators craft art and works, positions, collections, & what's best to obtain maximum benefits, royalty rights, protected assets per work for artist(s) works, compositions etc. I get it now and as I grow daily.
Great video! Thank you for sharing this.

#6 .....Owning your creations is a statement that has been preached for almost half a century. It's goes in one ear and out the other.
@Anne Day I don't think you always get the chance to own the masters.
@Anne Day You have no real choice if you want to work with a major label unless you are doing great on your own. Artists don’t always have the resources to do it all by themselves. You shouldn’t have to give away your masters while the record label make money off of you. Everyone knows that. Your statement is extremely harsh like aTrump Supporter level. It sounds like you aren’t an artist at all.
@Anne Day I can with intelligent people. Leaving with an insult is not a characteristic of one.
@Anne Day a ‘choice’ without a viable option for you us not a real choice. That wasn’t an ad hominem statement. Your remarks are extremely harsh and lack compassion which is a characteristic of a Trump Supporter. I wasn’t wrong either by the way you left the conversation.
The point is not their ‘choice’ - the point is that giving away their masters shouldn’t be on the table in the first place.
Great video!!!!!!
Pharrell put it down not going to lie his beats was different still is......✌️

Great tutorial 👍👍👍 Expertly done🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much 👍
Hola . Gracias por crear contenido de tanto valor para los que queremos ser parte de la industria del entretenimiento. 💖
I enjoyed the video great work! Could you shine some insight on this question… When you create a great EP “demo” and don’t have the budget, connections, or marketing experience to get your music out?? That frustration in my humble opinion is the route to “bad record deals” as a creator you just want to be heard… thanks for the insight 🙏🏽 God bless
I Love Pharrell
Thanks man!
No problem
Great video as usual. Consider doing an video on TLC and their new album regarding if Left Eye family should receive royalties on the new music especially if she is not on every record. Thanks.
I'll check it out
I only knew him from the song Happy😃

I knew Pharrell was smart and very talented, but damn! Pure genius who cares about dreamers. He's a good human. I like him even more after seeing this.
Pharell is so cute & smart ❤️ thank you for all the info
I listened to this interview recently, it was very informative.
Yes it was indeed... to most, to me it was reassuring.
At work watching this 🗣️👍🏾🇯🇲🇨🇦😎🎬🎶🎶🎶
LOL focus dude
The actual way is:
1. Write mainstream chords
2. Don't be creative, stay with what works
3. Put eyes and triangles in your music videos
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm rolling ova here!!!
Never sell your soul to The Devil 💙.
In real world words, never sell your personal and entire life to compannies.

God's work bro. Thanks for the helping hand. I'm not here to fuck around and waste time.
Edit: Thank you for the elucidation upon record labels vs. Banks.
I consider myself pretty resourceful and wise, but apparently I've just been talking out my neck about the industry this whole time. It's good to be humbled. Lessgo
It's all good
Great content bro
Appreciate it
If I had to be an indentured servant in the industry for seven years (can't remember the actual term) I would be happy. Indentured servitude was designed to help someone to learn the workings necessary to prevent the need to be a servant. Once one learned the mechanics of an industry, they would be able to lead a company in the industry.
💯
Nice one 👍 👌
Thanks
Ok thank you
No problem
28:55 had me laughing he's soo right tho
IM GONNA MAKE IT TO XXL FRESHMAN 2021!
I just finished reading Jewel's book Never Broken and she talks a lot about how she was selling tons of albums but ended up broke by trusting the wrong person (her manager mom). She also talks about how she kept her label behind her by not spending a lot of money on extras and performing as much as humanly possible.
kool.
