A very important thing to add, because Geography Now forgot to mention: the rule to be able to participate is that your country's broadcaster should be active member of the EBU (European Broadcasting Union). It is not only a geographical thing. That is why countries like Israel are allowed to participate.

Eurovision is politics, fun songs, beautiful songs, amazing performances, trolls and you most likely will find your new favorite songs in one of the contests. Like fairytale, waterloo, cha cha cha, arcade, shum, uno and many more are really good actually.

Australia first competed in Eurovision in 2015, having been invited to take part being hughe fans of the contest so for its 50th anniversary was let in to join now for some reason they still enter due to the popularity of the song contest among European diaspora communities. Australia has been in the top 10 four times and is the second country outside of the Eurasia region to take part in the contest since Morocco competed in 1980
Anyway last year the eurovision creators for first time created an American Song Contest so all American states compete against each other.....you can see the full grand Final.of American Song Contest 2022 on youtube

Australia had a contract with Eurovision until 2023. It now has to be renewed or dropped. My unpopular opinion: it should be dropped. It was invited exceptionally for 5 years but the exception shouldn't become a rule. With the votes opened in the rest of the world for this edition 2023, nothing prevents then New Zealand or Canada to join as both CBC/SRC and TVNZ are, like Australian's SBS, associate members of EBU. Australia's participation was based on the fact it was hugely popular in the country. It's also very popular in New Zealand and the country is not invited. For Canada, it has nothing to do with the Crown. It's just about being an associate member of EBU. NBC, ABC, CBS (and NPR) in the US are also associate members of EBU though the fact more and more Americans do reaction on «What is Eurovision» shows it's just not known in the USA nor popular and then one couldn't invite America to participate as Australia where it is very popular in the contrary to the US.

It's kinda sad and unfortunate how he only focused on the silly joking part of Eurovision which is only the minority of the contest and not the genuinely good and serious performances with great songs, voices and messages of the majority. I feel like this will only encourage people to make fun of Europe and their music and is not a good representation.

NO, this is not the reason why the ppl watch it. Eurovision is Freedom, Universal love for music, fun, love ecc... I'm Romanian so i think i can share this with confidence. One thing that America will not understand EVER about Eurovision is that, this song contest is to feel good, make a show ,enjoy and celebrate yourself as a country/culture and other countries and a way to land support to a country that maybe didn't have a good year and hey if we happened to win fine that is great and if we don't that is fine to we had a blast at least. I feel that America would take this to seriously and just want to win.
Don't understand me wrong Eurovision its not a silly contest it means so much for us Europeans it brings us closer as a continent through music but the wholesomeness of the ''we are here to vibe' and vibe only" even if that means we make a fool out of ourselves sometimes is what makes it ten times better and is something that America (USA) doesn't posses because you want to be the worlds best and that does not apply here because is not only about that.

@@ChadeoYT That’s true, but nobody wants to send a troll entry nowadays. The contest has gotten a lot more serious since 2021. The only troll entry this year was from Croatia, which was a mockery of Putin and Lukashenko if anything, rather than trolling the viewers. I miss those silly entries but the contest is better without them.
If a song wants to be goofy nowadays, it’s usually a high quality song with a meaning (like Austria this year, which hid a message about the ghostwriting epidemic and the mistreatment and abysmal pay of songwriters behind a catchy dance chorus that uses Edgar Allan Poe’s name as a running gag… and it works!).

    czcams.com/video/9-lPfuMYnqI/video.htmlsi=lj96rvcUNoN6QDX9
And, just for an example of what EUROVISION is 👇 the Opening Cerimony from Eurovision 2019 (hosted in Tel Aviv, Israel, because Netta won in 2018). The aim of the opening Cerimony is to celebrate your own country (that won last year), to celebrate (if you did) past winners allowing them to sing again (if they're still alive, of course, lol). And to present the 26 finalists with the famous "Flags parade" (in the Gran Final). Eurovision is on May, three days (two semifinals and one grand final). Only 10 countries can qualify to the final from each semifinal. So, 10+10 =20 + the Big Five (Italy, Spain, Germany, France, UK) + the hosting country. So, 26 finalists in the final (25 if the hosting country is one of the big five: it happened in 2022, Esc was in Turin, because Italy won in 2021).
