Sorry, but that video paints a very one-sided and incorrect picture, it's really not a good introduction to Eurovision. Of course there's some politics in the voting, but it hardly ever impacts the top places. And trolls are just trolls, it doesn't necessarily mean a country is trying to lose on purpose.

    • @MagdalenaBozyk
      @MagdalenaBozyk Před 2 měsíci +3

I agree, I think that what people call "politics" it's just cultural likes and dislikes. Of course everyone enjoys similar styles as their neighbors getting culturally similar tastes. That results in Greece and Cyprus voting on each other and so on. The politics might instead come around if countries that are culturally similar, choose not to vote at each other.
In the end the song that wins isn't a song that "everyone politically voted on", because it would always be the same country that wins, and probably the one with the most friends. But that isn't the case.
It always frustrates me when Eurovision is described as "political voting".
As to trolls. Countries that don't want to win - can just choose not to compete. I'm fairly sure trolls get sent, because majority in the country just thought it was hilarious and voted. Humor doesn't always translate between languages and cultures.

I don't understand how this video has become the definitive introductory video about the Eurovision Song Contest. It contains so much misinformation.
The Eurovision Song Contest is not "more for fun". Most of the participating countries take the competition very seriously. You should definitely watch the ESC.

I did enjoy Finland's entries a couple of times. Last year, for example, I really love that one. Some might hate me for saying this, since I'm Swedish, but that one should have won😉. Eurovision is a Song Contest, not a singing contest. The song get judged, not the singers. The trophy goes ultimately to the writers not to the singers.

And to set some things straight. We do actually take this competition seriously, most of the times. And sending in trolls, doesn’t mean we don’t want to win Eurovision. The Netherlands actually hosted Eurovision several times, because the other country couldn’t host it themselves. Politics does only play a minor role nowadays.

The American song contest was actually started by some Europeans (I only know that the Swedish Christer Björkman is one of the names) who tried to bring the Eurovision concept to the USA. It doesn't seem to be going so well. It is probably more difficult to create a viewing tradition today with so many channels and the internet as competition. When Eurovision started, there was probably only one TV channel, so then everyone watched.

Someone having heritage in another country beyond (in addition to) the one they're representing would explain why they would sing in a language other than English or the country they represent. There's a lot more to Eurovision than the cheesy or crazy songs (which there always are....I've found the last few years to have less kooky songs than usual). This video is old - Sweden and Ireland are now tied for number of wins with Loreen's win last year. The guy you're watching doesn't seem to really appreciate it or understand a lot of nuances. There are some EXCELLENT ESC CZcamsrs though!

  • @germankitty
    @germankitty Před 3 měsíci +2

Eurovision actually started out in a way that emphasized the music and lyrics -- performance was definitely secondary, if counted at all. (I should know; the earliest ESC I can remember was 1966 -- Udo Jürgens won for Austria with the song "Merci, Cherie". 🙂) That's why there were expert jurys; usually the composers would conduct the orchestra, and politics weren't that much of an issue. Also, everyone HAD to sing in their own language. Politics entered the arena around the time ABBA won for Sweden in 1974; they were also among the first to perform in cutting-edge fashion. Actual "costumes" to match the song/country's culture started showing up in the 1980s. Ireland and the UK will usually support each other, so will the Scandinavian countries, but it's a rare year that Germany and Austria -- or Turkey and Greece -- will give each other more than just a few points -- and that was before public voting became a thing. (The one time public voting got it right was when Lordi won for Finland with "Rocking Roll Hallelujah" -- simply because there is no greater mismatch than Metal and Eurovision. It was glorious! 🙂)

I don't think this video is a very good representation of what Eurovision is. The idea that a country deliberately tries to lose is crazy as the sheer amount of tourism it attracts is huge. And the big 5 help smaller countries financially. My favourite band Lord of the Lost represented Germany last year. They came last because Germany tends to get low votes no matter what. But they said they would absolutely do it again even knowing they'd come last. The fanbase has doubled. The sillyness of some of the acts is part of it and the political voting is no secret. Graham Norton and his predecessor Terry Wogan always made sarcastic comments during their commentary ha .I think someone watching something now as an outsider that people have been watching for 50 years, they"ll maybe not get it. Thanks for the video anyways!

Drinking game from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Sorry for the Google translate mistakes. 🇳🇱🇪🇺🍻
    Eurovision Drinking Game
First, a participant chooses a country.
There are several 'causes' of drinking, my advice is to play with beer and keep it there.
People fill up his or her glass if:
    It is empty.
One drinks his or her glass empty when he / she laughs during the appearance of the country chosen by him / her. For extra excitement, take an exotic and unknown country.
    One takes a drink as:
The candidate is winking at the camera.
The candidate portrays the text in a way.
    The candidate uses props.
The candidate swept out without clear speech with his / her voice.
The candidate sings all the songs, but you only notice it on half of the song.
The candidate plays an instrument that no one of the viewers can name the name.
    If:
The 'performance' has a strange title (Shoo-wop)
The 'performance' has a political message. (2 if it concerns Europe as a whole, 3 if the subject is the euro crisis)
The 'performance' is a stolen idea from another year
The 'performance' used makes from fireworks, lazers, smoke or wind machine (one sip each.)
The 'performance' interaction of the audience asks (empty glass drinking if the audience does not participate).
The 'performance' a scale goes up.
The 'performance' of France is once again expres- sive.
The 'performance' of France in English is (empty glass drinking.)
The 'performance' of a Baltic country is 'depressive' in nature.
The 'performance' of the German country is about, love, peace or harmony, or contains one of the words. (one sip each.)
The 'performance' has a 'performer' from another country. Two gulps as the 'performer' is Irish.
    If:
The host and hostess look at each other in love.
The host and hostess try to be funny and it fails.
    The host and hostess sing.
The host and hostess speak in rhyme.
Kissing the host and hostess. (drink empty glass!)
The hostess suddenly has another dress.
The host suddenly has a dress! (Empty your glass!)
The host and hostess have a conversation and nobody knows what it is about.
(During this part, take notes of all countries that are obviously bad but the singer / singer is very attractive.)
    If:
There is someone in retro clothing on stage.
Experimental on the stage with make-up
There is someone more naked than dressed on stage.
There is someone wearing a hat on stage.
There is someone on the stage with fake blonde hair. (This rule only applies to countries from Eastern Europe.)
There is someone who has a mustache on stage. (Empty glass with a woman!)
There someone on the stage dressed during the song.
    If:
The performer (head or background) sings a different language than English, language of the country or French.
The performer (head or background) to the camera gives a wink.
The performer (head or background) falls on his / her knees.
The performer (head or background) throws the hair over the shoulder. (Empty the glass if the person in question is bald!)
The performer (head or background) makes a peace sign.
The performer (head or background) arms around the head will swing around.
The performer (head or background) is in the air.
The performer (head or background) puts more emotion than necessary.
The performer (head or background) cheating.
The performer (head or background) pretend to hold an instrument. (two with a fake guitar.)
The performer (head or background) is very fond of someone you know but you do not remember what makes you think.
The performer (head or background) flirting with the camera.
    If:
    The broadcast falls away.
Broadcasting the broadcast a pre-broadcast that does not suit what is coming.
The broadcast used a helicopter shot.
The broadcast uses special effect that are better than the number.
The broadcast suddenly starts to play faster or slower.
Now we are at the next round. Here you use the country you have chosen, plus the information of which countries were bad but had an attractive singer / singer.
    One takes a drink as:
There is a fatrage in the broadcast.
The host / hostess speaks through a point of reference.
A good prediction is made about points by the host / hostess.
The commentator had a good prediction (If you thought that commentator and presenter was the same, your glass may be empty.)
The commentator is genuinely angry about a result.
Bad numbers score more than 8+ points due to the attractiveness of the singer / singer.
The comentator makes common comments about:
    'Atem block votes'
"Countries that vote back and forth."
'It still has to get used to democracy'
    'Just vote for neighboring countries.'
There is a discussion about Israel
There is a joke about Norway having 0 points again.
Points are given above 8 to your chosen country.
If someone wins his country, everyone except the winning country will empty his or her glass.
    Good luck.

Eurovision is taken so serious! It's like saying people don't take the Superbowl serious, or the play offs in football.
We don't do the sob-stories from the performers here, that's a very US thing, and also because this is not only about the preformer. It's about the song, and the song is representing a county, just like in any sport competition. Sure, we make the whole thing fun, and make fun of it, while it also is being taken serious. I think it's much better to compare it to the Superbowl than to The Voice or American Idol. We make it a big party, and it's a lot national pride going on!

  • @EEmB
    @EEmB Před 2 měsíci +1

Sending "troll songs" or sending songs "that sucks" as he said, isn't at all the reason he says it is!! Had it been counties that don't want to host it cause the can't afford it, sure it has happened, but most often it's either because people actually LIKE the song! It's also because many of these "goofy" performances earns A LOT of money!
It's NOT "trolling". These songs becomes popular and usually part of "the songs of the summer", and they get played on clubs and on parties! Many of these "troll songs" he called it, are still played! They have so many downloads! So him saying it's trolling, it's not, it's business.

If you as an artist want to partake in Eurovision, well, you have to send in a song to the broadcaster of the nation you want to represent. Fx. I'm from Denmark, so if I wanted to get a chance to represent Denmark, I'll have to send it to DR and hope that I get to compete in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix.
Buuuuuuut, if you want to represent Belgium, you can send in a song every other year (as far as I've understood). They have two broadcasters that takes turns, and each have their own way of finding an artists.
If you want to represent the UK or the Netherlands, well good luck. They are some of the counties that have internal selections, and I've no idea how those countries choose their artists😂
