I think that many non-Europeans cannot really appreciate Eurovision because they are too addicted to what is given by the mass media. It's not American Idol, thankfully. These aren't just English songs, thankfully. They are not famous singers but that does not mean that they are not good. The songs often, even if modern, contain in the text and musically what is tradition of their country. It is not flattening towards the American model but honoring one's roots. however the Maneskin have been successful thanks to Eurovision, I also mention Abba and Celin Dion. It goes beyond competition, it is a way of making your country known and getting to know others. I am Italian, I get along a little with English, but I prefer when the singers express themselves in their mother tongue, this year in addition to the piece of Ukraine I liked the Portuguese, the French and the Dutch one, I enjoyed it the Moldovan one. I was sorry that Italy's performance was not up to par, because instead in Sanremo Blanco and Mahmood had been great. I recommend everyone to look for our Sanremo festival, which inspired Eurovision.

No, Canda is not competing in 2023. Canada is getting THEIR OWN Eurovision-style contest in 2023 like the US did this year, but they are NOT competing in the main competition. Literally one fake news site reported the information about the Canada comp incorrectly and now people are just spreading it without fact checking. You'd think the fact the EBU literally never said that would be the tip off it was wrong.

The fun thing about trolls entries is that they can either almost win or come dead last, they are either serious entries with a joking flair, or just a country that really doesn’t want to win and sends straight up trash. Though the one thing they have in common is that they make Eurovision a fun thing to watch.
Some examples of succeeding/failing troll songs :
The song Dancing Lasha Tumbai by Verka Serduschka (the example of tactics) and also the Russian grandmas both came second place.
On the other hand there are troll songs like I don’t feel hate by Jendrik (Germany 2021) or Eat your veggies by I can’t remember the name (Latvia 2022) which either were pretty much last in the final (since Germany auto qualifies) or don’t qualify at all

Greenland is not an independant country, its still a Danish territory. Kinda hard to compete in an international competition when you are not in fact a nation.
This video is honestly pretty out of date in terms of representing the modern competition. He's describing it how it used to be in the 2000s-early 2010s, which is when it was at its absolute worst in terms of quality. Countries take it a lot more seriousy now, and troll acts are no where near as common as they used to be (they have to genuinely be funny or bops in order to even make the final, like Norways entry this year).

  • @domiiinik4320
    @domiiinik4320 Před rokem +2

Greenland is not a country, it belongs to Denmark
Countries like Australia, Morocco or Israel compete (or competed, Morocco only once in 1980) in Eurovision because they belong to EBU, there is no rule that country must be from Europe, there is a rule that country must belong to EBU (or at least be in range of broadcast for EBU)
Australia was the weirdest one, but Eurovision was popular in Australia since the 80's, so in 2015 they asked them if they want to compete once, but they made it so good that EBU decided they can stay and compete every year
Oh, and one more thing - the troll era (2000's and early 2010's) is long gone, now there are 75% songs every year that are great performances, 1 or 2 trolls and the rest are mediocre pop songs
I recommend to listen to all songs od 2021 or 2022, you won't be disappointed

Just got this video recommend I know i'm late XD
to be honest i don't think you really understand it. As a person who lives in Europe and knows Eurovision is mostly like a small (let's call it) a festival/party you enjoy with family or friends.
The non-European countries that are competing like Israel and such, are countries connected/associated by some kind of trade laws, other laws, ... . We let Australia enter because it is really popular over there and they loved it, we love them back equally.
What people forget is that Greenland is not Europe, Iceland is.
Let's be clear not all songs are weird or trash, there are pretty good songs that aren't shown and yes we still have the troll countries but they lessened over the years. The world would never have known ABBA, Johnny Logan, Celine Dion, Duncan Laurence, Maneskin, Sunstroke project (ft. Olia Tira), Sam ryder, jesse matador, Lena,.... without the ESC. But of course we like a bit of trolling, it's what makes ESC fun.
No we don't want America to compete, they would make a mess of it. And most artists are unknown before competing, known artists competing normally get really bad points though. (except for Johnny Logan who won ESC three times)
What people forget is beside that it's like a huge party, song lyrics do matter (because that was what ESC stand for the winnings go to the songwriter not the performer unless you are the writer of your own song), performance does matter too. It doesn't have to be catchy to win.
It used be that countries had to sing in their own languages, but that rule has been scrapped, you can sing in whatever languages you want. Mostly choose english or french because that are the languages most people in Europe understand, but there are still performances in own language.
I hated it when Lithuania came with that song, that was too mucH.

    1) it's not a singing competition, it's an original song competition.
    2) you're taking it wayyyyy to seriously (or you're taking yourselves too seriously - idk) & look at it through the very American competitive perspective that us Europeans like to roll our eyes about all day long.

That Geography Now video is pretty bad, based on (sometimes incorrect) hearsay, and focusing entirely on all the negatives. Yes, it's often cheesy, there are troll songs, and some of the voting is political (but rarely impacting the top 5). But it's also a really big event, with amazing staging, a very long history, top artists (like Abba or Celine Dion), that opened doors for the LGBTQ community. And while some genres were definitely more prominent, there has been an amazing variety of music over the years.

Maybe some of their choices turned out not to be up to par but what about France both this year and last year? They were two fantastic performances. And Chanel for Spain? the German song would have deserved more, the choice of English perhaps did not help. For Italy I quote Zilli, I Volo, Mahmood and the Maneskin. And England did it this year.,

Right! UK, FR, IT, ES and DE pay the largest sums to the EBU (European Brodcarsting Union). They also have by far the most spectators at the event. That's why these countries should always be in the final. They also have a harder time scoring since they have fewer "friends" who give them a lot of points. Just like the Scandinavians among themselves, or the states of the former USSR and former Yugoslavia. Ultimately, however, good music always prevails and the songs end up at the top of the rankings.
