Watching **EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: THE STORY OF FIRE SAGA** for the first time | IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD

  • While I sit here patiently waiting for Legend of Kora to come to Netflix, I decided this week I'd react to Eurovision Song Contest: The Legend Fire Saga. And this week I decided to bring a friend along with me! Eurovision Song Contest: The Legend Fire Saga is a film that was meant to be released in time with the actual Eurovision 2020 contest. But the contest was cancelled for 2020. The movie stars Will Farrell and Rachel McAdams as Icelandic musicians hoping to make it into this year's contest. I wasn't sure what to expect going into it but I was very surprised!

I like that this movie don't make fun of Eurovision. That was my fear when I heard of this movie. But they really did a great job at making fun of everything surrounding Eurovision, but not Eurovision itself, and I love that. The drama surrounding the real thing is often at a fever pitch so it fits right in. Examples from 2023 are the feud online this year of fans of Finland (Käärijä) and Sweden (Loreen), the jury scandal in Poland and the host country UK flopping and ending up in second to last place.

    A couple of points:
    1. The jumping whales are a bit cheesy, but also appropriate given that Húsavík is the centre for Icelandic whale watching. There are two competing tour companies and a whale museum.
It's also fitting given Sigrit's connection to the supernatural.
    2. ABBA got their international break through winning ESC. Before that they'd been famous in Sweden for about two years. (I saw and heard them perform "Ring Ring" live in 73 when I was just short of four years old. It's one of my first strong memories.)
    3. I like Pierce Brosnan as an actor, but his attempts at speaking Icelandic are cringe worthy. In my opinion they should have used Icelanders for the Icelandic characters.
    4. The bus stop scenes are also cringe:
If there's only one stop it should be located centrally, not outside the town.
As is, it's placed north of the town and the bus moves to/from the north, AWAY from the nearest airport and Reykjavík.
    5. When presenting the results of the semi final they don't apply any of the lower scores from each nation.
    6. When Lars returns to Iceland after the semi it's totally unrealistic that nobody congratulates him.

I have no idea how I got here Steph, but what a banger of a movie! Just to let you know, Graham Norton is from the non-British part of Ireland :) I have no idea when this may apply to you next but, I have seen in music reactionary spaces, you can start a war in 0.5 seconds by calling an Irish person British. You probably already know but Ireland is now divided into "Republic of Ireland" and Northern Ireland (which is under British rule, there is a long history between the two islands and Irish folks have suffered alot of oppression due to the conflict, there's a famous image "No blacks; No dogs; No Irish"). It can be a sensitive topic and I just wouldn't want you to get thrown to the wolves in your comments 💚🧡 Peace and love from a half English, half Irish fan, and, currently LOVING your Attack on Titan series!
