I honestly thought it was going to be shit but I’ve watched it like 5 times in the space of 2 weeks. Funniest film I’ve seen in a long time! Sorry for doubting you guys! 😩😂
Being a Norwegian woman, who has grown up with the Eurovision Song Contest, and also done a school paper on it, I can tell you that the contest began as an attempt to create something cheerful after World War 2 had ended. Some of the great broadcasting companies in Europe from UK, France, Switzerland + a couple of others, decided to make a contest where composers and songwriters could submit their material and the winner was supposed to represent a new, positive music trend to lighten peoples' spirit. As time has passed on, it has become more and more of a show for crazy songs, lyrics, costumes, and more over-the-top performers and stage shows. In European countries, many of the winning songs over the years, are songs that "everybody" knows, and can act as a great barrier breaker when meeting strangers in another country. I hope you found this little "lesson" interesting, Kim :-)
Yeah it was like where's this guy been all my life? He's got it all! Since many people are staying inside watching movies now, I think his career might get a serious boost from this one. I mean - he should be A list.
I was suprised to find so many layers to the characters. Dan’s character for instance being a gay artist in Russia, enjoying all the luxuries but the one thing he wants (love). Small subtle nods like this throughout the movie.
@@lovisanaslund8998 A Russian here speaking: in Russia EVERYONE knows that Lazarev is gay. And it's ok with everybody you can talk to, but somehow being gay is still ''immoral" in public's official views... "Doublethink" level here is insane. It's not even hypocrisy anymore. It's crazy.
Lovisa Näslund although tone of voice wise and all the gold things more remind me of Baskov (who is also rumored to be gay) He’s also Called “the Gold voice of Russia”, Lasarev mostly wears blacks and silvers, more cold toned colors and voice quite softer)
No idea why some are panning this film ! I'm no great fan of The Eurovision Song Contest and haven't watched it since Punk arrived on the scene but this film was a great laugh and had some seriously good songs in it. Rachel McAdams is as cute as a button and Molly Sanden's singing has made me look up her work.
We live in post apocalyptic world where feel good funny entertainment like this gets crushed and superficial superhero cheesy films get billion dollar hype.....
I think it’s because most people who are American/Canadian have NEVER seen or even heard of Eurovision, so they don’t understand why people like it and they don’t see the humor in the movie. The movie is SO ridiculous but it’s funny because they didn’t even change or exaggerated Eurovision, it really is that ridiculous. And the cultural aspect is on point in the whole movie.
Dan Stevens got the accent perfectly. My husband is Russian and we live in Ukraine. If I closed my eyes, I could swear I was listening to any number of our friends talking to us. It was spot-on
Definitely not Borat. His accent was really authentic, and he even kept it while shouting, which is usually where I hear actors lose their "put on" accents.
Love the film.....this will resonate with European audience more than American. To the casual observer if will be s silly camp romcom.....but if you grew up with Eurovision and the cultural phenomenon it is you get do much more out of it and also get the parody aspects also. Rachel suited this role so well and her bjork inspired accent was so good.....will as always is in fine form! 9/10....I only dock a point because they didn't sing "ja ha ding dong" again.....when seethe film you will get the reference LOL. I hope #netflix bring Rachel and Will back for a sequel!
Im from the Philippines and this movie got me hooked with Eurovision! I watched 2019 Eurovision and realized that European music is extra ordinary! I even dig those non-english songs and its already on my spotify playslist! I also love 2016 and 2018 Eurovision! I especially love the songs 1944 from Ukraine, Soldi from Italy, Sebi from Slovenia among those foreign languages.. Performance wise I love last year's Australian entry, it was breathtaking! Im not particularly impressed with the voting system though because there could be politics involved in the jury votes.. But the public votes kinda balanced it all out but still..
