The whole "believing in elves" thing actually comes from an old survey from 1998. According to the survey
Around 50% of the country believes in elves. I personally think it was a failure to communicate and I think the people who answered 'yes' didn't understand the question, merely meaning that they have heard of elves and know what an elf is.

It doesn't mean that I would really believe in gnomes. It would still be normal to talk about a gnome. Example would be say that we need to remember clean the sauna to keep the gnome happy. A happy gnome would in turn make sure the sauna would be enjoyable experience next time.

The nerd guide to the errors in The Story Of Fire Saga:
    1) The opening scene finds Lars and Sigrit as children, watching Abba performing Waterloo at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. But Iceland did not broadcast the Eurovision live on TV until 1983 and they didn't enter it until 1986.
    2) The adults are also seen drinking beer as they watch the contest - but Iceland had strict prohibition laws outlawing full-strength beer until 1989.
    3) The Netherlands won Eurovision in 2019, but the contest is being held in Scotland. In reality it would have been held in the Netherlands because of the winner.
    4) Eurovision has a lot of archaic rules, mostly designed to keep an incredibly complex live TV show from going off the rails. Unencumbered by those constraints, the film takes a few minor liberties when it recreates the contest.
Sweden's act, Johnny John John, has seven performers on stage when the maximum is six (gasp!). Lars's piano is actually wired up and plugged in, so he can play live - which is actually forbidden (double gasp!).
    5) As Eurovision fans know, the contest actually stretches over five days, with two semi-finals preceding the grand finale. From each of those heats, 10 acts stay in the competition, and the rest are unceremoniously sent home.
In the film, Fire Saga's semi-final performance goes disastrously wrong - and they retreat to the backstage area, certain that their dreams are over, to watch the scores coming in. But in real life, the scores aren't revealed during the semi-final. Instead, they're kept secret until the entire contest has ended, to ensure there are no clear favourites going into the final.
    6) Every time a country awards points to Iceland, their score is shown to be zero. But Eurovision points are cumulative, so you would expect to see their total rise as more votes were cast.
What's more, the scoreboard shows Germany, Spain and the UK taking part in the semi-final when, in reality, all three qualify automatically for the finale as part of the "big five" financial contributors.
    7) Films often take liberties with the layout of a city, but Fire Saga really takes the biscuit (or in this case the Highland Shortbread).
For a start, Dan Stevens' character owns a lavish Scottish mansion that offers sweeping, panoramic views of Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle. To get those views in real life, the castle would have to be located at the top of Calton Hill in the city centre - which would mean he'd built his house on a world heritage site, over the top of the Nelson Monument.
    8) Graham Norton in the scene commentating would never comment in real life while the song is playing and certainly wouldn't swear

When you visit Iceland, you are told about the myths of trolls and elves, that they're part of Icelandic heritage and that there are traditions around them.
Also the Icelandic horse is a very unique breed of horse - there are around 80,000 of them in Iceland, a country of 317000 people. Saying "some people are into horseback riding" is probably an understatement.

Why would you buy a horse, rent a place for it, schedule when you need to drive there and take care of it (and hire someone else to do that when you're unable to) for a sport you're not even sure you're going to like long term. Even if you LOVE horses that's a lot of money. It's far easier to just buy a dance course or something (which is far more common)

The Ericksdottir, Erickssong inside joke is my favorite. I'm Asian but I read years ago that Scandinavian last names are rooted from the father's name adding suffixes for son and daughter and then they said that Erick and Helka have history.

Did you notice that Lars/Will made fun of the Americans twice, then they gave him a ride to the EV contest, then he insulted them again, and they ended up going to Iceland, and danced to his song, with big smiles? That was them towards the end, at the back, dancing to Jaja ding dong.....don't be insulted so easily. American's are always making fun of each other, its our stupid humor.

I mean, this wasn’t a documentary about Iceland.. if that’s what you’re expecting, you’re gonna have a bad time. It’s a lighthearted comedy about the Eurovision Song Contest. It has a lot of heart, moving songs, stereotype-breaking AND stereotype-confirming jokes.

shyress It’s not like America. At the time there were basically no immigrants in Iceland. Also, in America, you can pick basically any name for your kid. But in Iceland, all names that are not on a list of preapproved traditional Icelandic names must be specifically approved by a naming committee. This committee is much more lenient now, but they used to have very strict standards. The issue is that due to the very complicated grammar in Icelandic, most names of foreign origin literally do not work at all in Icelandic (i.e., you must be able to declinate the name). For this reason, people use traditional Icelandic names regardless of the rules since they don’t want to their kids to be named something that would sound very strange in Icelandic. These rules regarding acceptable names were put in place to protect the Icelandic language.
