My problem with modern "scholars" is how seldom they cite their source or explain how they reached to a conclusion. And I recently saw one scholar give an opinion based on a weak hadith , which he admitted was a weak hadith, "but there's nothing wrong with mentioning a weak hadith" as he said. What??

I would really love for just one scholar or Mulla to seriously consider what they are really saying. Time and time again they refer to vague Hadith and how some person will emerge to mansplain the Quran to women. All the while completely overlooking the most important and only source The Quran, it's mentioned four times that God has made it easy for us to understand. No scholar or outside source needed. Basically hes saying don't read 114 chapters of the Quran just wait for some magic fairy to come and explain 700.000 Hadith written 200+ years after the death of the prophet.
“And We made the Qur’an easy to remember. Is there anyone who would remember?”
6:65 “See how well We explain these revealed verses so that you may Understand their wisdom (UFQAHOON)”
I could go on and on, but seriously why is this even a discussion. It leads to confusion when they keep up this farce, "you need outside sources to understand". You don't, you need to be able to read that's all. Use your own judgement and reflect. It's so much easier, truly God made it easy, but man made tales made it hard. It's such a shame.
Over and over again in the Quran God is speaking to us telling to reflect and ponder. To take heed from the lessons in the Quran and oh yeah TO THINK!
Ask yourselves this, who gave these "Ulama" the authority to make these laws and place your minds in these intellectual jails.
    Answer is: no one.
    There is one leader: Allah
    One book: Quran
One Hadith: the Hadith in the Quran
    Allah knows best.

I agree- the ahadiths are truth mixed with falsehood. And it has created religions within what was supposed to be one religion.
When I read the Quran, it doesn't read as a religious text alone. It reads also as a book of governence- in other words it reads as if Allah is talking to a person or a body of people who are responsible for governing a nation. So it is guidance on how to intellectually and justly govern into a humanitarian golden age.
The Quran is an explanation of what good leadership looks like.
The problem with Islam, in my opinion: Islam has an over abundance of scholars yet no Khalifa to actually implement the Quran as a tool for righteously governing the land. And some of these ahadiths are causing Islam to revert back to the jahiliyah (age of ignorance)
Muslim or not Muslim, leaders all over the world need to be referring to the Quran in order to properly and humanely govern their people.
But we don't necessarily see that happening- we have Islamic communities more focused on implementing these ahadiths of the 9th century rather than the Quran of that was revealed in the 7th century.
      It literally makes no sense.

It takes some critical thinking to know which way to face when praying on an airplane. You can figure this out if you know that "piety is not turning your face to the east or the west . . ." But there may be other varied and interesting opinions on this. So, what's wrong with checking out scholarly opinions? Maybe this is the type of rethinking Dr. Shabir is talking about.

Understand Quran & don't let your impulse & opinion to interpret it. It is not subject to your critical thinking to interpret it neither believe in someone's opinion & ruling. Please read & understand very well Quran 7:3 & 69:44-47 prohibiting add ons on the Quran by words of men, it being complete, perfect, clear, in detail, nothing to add, change, alter nor delete. It is not subject of anyone's opinion, interpretation or critical thinking.
It is a must to read, study, understand & follow with none is exempted.
