Certainly a cheaper way to add some astronomical cachet to your collection than buying a Speedmaster! For well under $300USD, this Gerlach is a throwback to the 1970s as well as having an attached feel-good story of Polish space exploration. Be warned! You will have to relearn the process of time telling due to the two handed operation, and the LED display makes it a better watch after dark than in the midday sun. Cheers, Jody

Beautiful watch - Gets right what most digital watches don't (looking at you, Casio): Big, bold digits and not a ton of "exposition". I wish the screen was a pitch black "slab" when it doesn't display time - the reddish brown with the circle is a bit distracting. But then I'm a big fan of the glass desk in TRON - I can't help myself.

Casio only problem is too much cheap plastic and not enough stainless steel versions of digital watches. Now I understand the reasoning for price tag, but I would rather pay a few bucks more for real metal versions of watches like the Royale. It's so bad that Casio has created an entire after-market mod scene just dedicated to their plastic watches. Beyond that, I don't mind the rest that you mention. They are "God tier" for a reason.

Just a fun information you might find interesting about the name of the brand Gerlach.
Gerlach is the highest mountain peak of 2655m in Tatra mountains in Slovakia (there's also polish side of Tatras). Full name is Gerlachovský štít (Gerlach shield) and it's named after Gerlachov township established in 1326 by four brothers: Jan, Mikulas, Peter and Stefan Gerlach.

I was transfixed by a watch from the Sears catalogue that was similiar to this - red led's that lit up when you pushed the button. Got it for xmas that year and was the happiest kid on the block. No idea what brand it was or specific details but I do remember the battery life was just atrocious and it drove my mom nuts putting a new one in it every couple of months.

I was born in the late 60s and one thing that reissues of LED watches (or LED styles) is that sooo many of them use the more "novel" diffuse LEDs like this one. The most desirable, in my view, are the blade-type LED displays, where the segments are expressed as hair-thin lines of red brightness and not these blocky segments. Alternatively, the dot-segment LEDs are also more desirable. Still, this is great styling. My preference with red LED watches is that they have sapphire or glass, but most have plastic that can gouge pretty easily, so they're not meant for much rugged wear. Great to see this, but it's overpriced in my view and isn't carrying the best LED display to evoke the era properly. Thanks for sharing this.

I've had this watch for a few months. Quality of the finishing is very good and it looks great. Wears a bit bigger than the size would suggest. I eventually sold it because of 2 problems.
    1. The display button was very hard to press and eventually stopped working (due to slack of the module in the case). I was fixed by G.Gerlach (€24,- in shipping costs) but eventually stopped working again.
    2. The date is programmed wrongly and will show a wrong date after a while. I haven't figure out why/when this happens, but it was really annoying.
It is a shame. Otherwise I would have kept it in the collection.

I remember when I was a little kid back in the 70s, getting as a birthday/Xmas present (don’t remember which) in the form of a then ‘state of the art’ LED stainless steel wristwatch. It was circular rather than tonneau shaped like this, from some unknown brand (I might still have it somewhere?) maybe using that same period Sanyo module as that of the Polish cosmonaut’s. As I remember it having that same single push and pen-push time set buttons on the right hand side as this. And the same limited time/date/month/seconds functionality too.

Hoping you might get your hands on Bulova's re-issued Computrons! And Hamilton is re-issuing their Pulsar, but that one is a bit more expensive.

Reminds me when Sinclair was selling digital watches that you had to put together yourself.
Maybe it would be worth hunting down a vintage pulsar from the same time.

Just curious - did not some of the LED watches of that era have a "wrist flick" activation? One could kind of flick their wrist and this would activate the display, or you could push the button, of course. This is nice, interesting, probably not going to drop $300 on it, though. Thanks for the review. I had never heard of this brand.
