- I went around all of the cabinets and recorded every model in them! There might have been the odd one missing, but this basically shows the whole competition.
I go over some of the rules, rule changes, categories and general feel of the Golden Demon.

This was a good insight into how the competition works. It also showed me that I did not look at the cabinets enough last weekend. I missed so many things!

Thanks for doing the video! Re: the ranking changes, I think it's nice to have the the additional notable tier and have the notable entries to give someone starting their journey something to reach with. I managed to get a Notable with my epic scale Eldar Ulthwe Hemlock at 20:54 and given the quality of work that had also been given Notable I was super happy with the placement.
I don't think the duel and diorama should have been combined. The Duel category always had some of my favorite pieces just because of how they can be composed and framed, but it seems like GW is trying to push their other lines of models to get painted? It's also weird to see vehicles competing with monsters.
As a side point, IIRC for the youngbloods at Adepticon they didn't have all the commended up in front first because of the point you raised. The same point was raised previously and the organizers listened

Interesting about the lighting, I didn't realize it was what caused the washing out effect. Thanks for taking the time to put this togetther! it was crazy busy.

Its so interesting to have a tour of the cabinets for those of us who can't go to adepticon , the light there looks awfull though when you compare it to the pictures on instagram!

So the painter was right.
The best part of this video is there’s proof one of my favorite painters has seen my hellhammer.
I didn't see either of my 3 entries in this, granted one was probably sat at the table between the cabinets. Night lord units (playable pieces, no diorama) and Night Lord dreadnought.

Have other, well established painting competitions ever been ran this... oddly? To be polite. I.e. With late announcements of categories, vague categories and bad lighting etc? I just can't get my head round it. It would take actual effort to mess this up even if just one person was organizing it, let alone a massive company like GW.
I appreciate your thoughts on this competition and hope it becomes a regular thing you do!
I recorded the UKGD previously too. It is something I hope to do more of, it just depends on whether I have access to the cabinets.
I think with some time the Old World category will become stronger. It's still early days for the range and people newish to the hobby probably haven't had a lot of time with the models they have access to. For my next GD I was planning on painting an Ogre Tyrant for AoS but as soon as they announced the new categories I decided to dig out one of my old metal models as well. I wouldn't have had time to work on it if I was entering at Adepticon this year. I always enjoy seeing old models getting entered into GD and hopefully the Old World category will be a chance to see more of them.
I agree with this, although there were some Old World entries in the cabinets that I felt were overlooked.

Thanks for the video, this was my first year competing and I got the "Notable Entry" card so it was nice to hear your actual explanation on it, definitely motivating. It would be great if GW published more transparent info on the overall award structure.

Are you allowed to run leds in your model? When do they release 2025 rules? I really want to try to enter a model, and I just got into the hobby.
I don't enjoy playing, but I'm all for the for the building and modeling. It's hard to understand all the brackets for new players and hobbyists.

I love your video. One thing I was frustrated with was everyone taking video and pictures of the pieces while in line. I kept being stuck behind someone taking a picture and taking forever to move on. Overall I missed a lot of stuff especially later on because of this. I don’t think there should be photos allowed. Look and move on

It is so strange that people think that team entries were allowed before. The writing is letter-by-letter identical in the rules and submission forms this year and the last three years. It was never allowed according to the rules. I am happy it is now clearly banned though.

I have never been to a golden demon, even though I’m regarded as a good painter. I think a lot of that is fear, but also confusion (and im probably not good enough).
The category change each year worry me that I may be doing the wrong thing. Also I did ponder just ‘open’.. but I’m not clear on the rules.
Originally I thought it was just gw staff who entered, then thought unique sculpts or busts. Now I’m even more confused. Am I right you re-entered the loon boss on cave squig in open? And was that because it was entered at a previous GD.. yours confused (as always) Spacetoy

@@spacetoy4584 it is a bit confusing, but, according to the most recent rules, for Open "Anything goes here; single miniatures,
busts, larger scale miniatures, small armies or themed collections and pretty much any other type of entry that doesn’t fit anywhere else.
The Open Competition is also the only part of the event where Games Workshop staff are encouraged to enter and compete alongside the public" There are no rules against re-entering models that are from another GD.

I disagree with the complaint about the horus heresy and tow categories. Since it's a completely different setting, I don't think they should just be added to 40k or AoS, because "they could just aswell be from that setting". I do think tho, that the setting should be noticable on the art work, wich it was for the most part.

Who organises all of it ? Adepticon or GW ?
Even the pictures in GW website are notoriously badly done and some are not even done in the proper angle FFS (the 2 grots jumping from the plane) and it's up to the community to give a website with better and more pictures...
I will never understand why GW won’t share every entry.
You probably already know this, but the base on that gobbo Squig model, looks like it was rushed compared to the models paintjob.
But that is just based on the photos I have seen.

As someone who watches/ subscribes to these golden demon award videos, it seems a rather sour experience. For the amount of effort that people pour into their craft they don't get recognised as much as they deserve. Even the winners get pisspoor photos of their masterpiece, it feels like ripping mona lisa in half sometimes, you can't appreciate all the details etc. I wonder what your take is on this, maybe I'm just rambling.
I kind of disagree about the Commended Entries standing up there. If i was the 4th person who didn't get an award, I don't know if I'd even be upset. It's confirmation of basically 4th place, which I'd still be thrilled with, and I'd be celebrating for my fellow painters. I don't know if it would cross my mind to feel awkward about it. It probably depends on the person, but I don't think it's a bad method.
I found the feedback very considered and insightful. Unfortunately, the video is almost unwatchable with constant camera movement and the focus going in and out. Maybe a photo montage would work a lot better though I appreciate it would be more time consuming.
I am shocked at how small GD in America is. It is laughable that influencers are trying to portray this as the best GD ever; not a chance lmao. The GD in Manchester was like 5 times the size, if not more.
Please film even faster than 0.3 sec per model so we can't see it

As much as I appreciate your effort to film these entries, I found this video really difficult to watch... you move to quickly from one model to the next, the lens is slow to focus and just as my eyes settle on the model,, you've gone...
This is the only way to capture all the models, it's not easy. You get this or you don't get them.
