    Great comparison. As someone who has owned a TD-17 I can say without question the Simmons is worth the asking price. I paid $750 for a demo TD17 from GC. It was the base model that came with the cheaper cymbals which I couldn’t deal with. The pedal trigger was crap. I ended up buying the VH-10 hats and 15” ride. I also replaced the cheesy rack with an old Gibraltar. At the end of the day I’d spent another $500 bucks to make it ok. I also had to spend another $50 to buy a sound pack because the included sounds were garbage and difficult to adjust with the module.
    While the 1250 is cheap, it is nowhere near as cheesy as the Alesis kit. That said, it’s still an e kit with all the faults that e kits have. The most annoying for me is, no true crossstick ability. It is however the best low budget e kit available and the cymbals are really good.

      @@KeithronPowell I'm a drummer that uses a LOT of cross stick - rhumba's cha-cha's, ballads, etc. It is a royal PITA to have to cross your stick and play that click for 16 bars then swing the stick around to use the snare for the chorus. Can the rim be programmed to do that cross stick "click" (kinda sounds like claves). That would actually be a HUGE plus, because now I could play cross stick just by hitting the rim and NOT having to change stick position for the chorus!!!!! Your thoughts please!. Also are the Simmons cymbals dual zone or at least the ride? Thanks and great review

    I just purchased the 1250 because i had the crimson II but it didn't work out the box so I thought lets try the 1250 this time.... anyway, about the wobbly rack... first of all you have to set up the rack and make exact measures on both sides down to the floor. This is tricky since after you set the drums on the rack then having to decide how the drums are adjusted to your body. This means you have to kind of make these tweaks and changes all at the same time until you get the drums setup to your liking then you make your final adjustments on the legs making sure each leg is set exactly (Front to Back) and then if everything is exact and all measurements are correct to the other legs your drums should not wobble. Mine is solid as a rock and does not wobble.
    One other thing i'm finding is every once in a while if Im striking the high hats and then hit the snare drum rim the high hats turn off completely whenever the snare rim is hit for that second and every time. Also i'm finding one of the crash symbols also cuts out during other hits on other drums. One other thing is, yes, the App. I don't have an iphone so this is limited in that area.
    I've only been playing for two weeks but I use to play over 30 years ago and then quit. I just now this month got back into it and made a couple of clips just for fun.
    You can see and hear the miss hits when the module cuts out or gets overloaded at certain times.
    Here's a couple of clips below and yes I know they are not exact drum covers but I like to add my own techniques and yes I know they are not perfect, far from it and sometimes i forget to go here or there to strike a drum but again I've only been playing for 13 days now so if you've been playing for many years now.... "Don't stop"! It's tough to go back where you left off.

    Great comparative review amigo. Previous percussionist coming back from a 20 year hiatus. I was Heavily focused on the "marching" side with a background in DCI. Self taught drumset and always played on acoustics. Electrics are wayyy out of my comfort zone and now that it's time to pass the sticks to my 7 year old, I found your review to aid in solidifying my decision. Customer service is always a huge factor for me when buying "anything" electronic. That wisdom has come with age. Just read watched that drum and I have a few initial thoughts. For the money on esthetics I can see this set being compared to the SD1250 or the Crimson II. Less sounds… smaller pads… 1 less tom then the 1250. And the set up reminds me too much of a $500 set. Of course I haven’t played it but I think the pics of the suggestion for the module is way wrong! You can’t make any changes. The kick pad is interesting but I can’t find anything that lists the contents in the box. The one thing that I think is an immediate positive is the cymbal boom arms. I love those!!!!!

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  Před 5 měsíci

      Sponsored? Nope… let’s be clear. I review what is sent for that purpose. I’ve been sent product from Alesis and Simmons for review. I don’t pay anything. I have been sent the Alesis Crimson 2, Nitro Mesh and Max. And I didn’t pay a dime. I compared them to the simmons… I think Simmons gets overlooked all because people know the Alesis name. Now, those speakers were sent as review units as well. They make great looking props in the background and I set them up. If Alesis decides to send me some monitors for review…. Or maybe Roland… I’ll do a comparison and possible set them up in the background. Will you ask if I’m sponsored by them then? What about those PRESONUS E8 monitors? Did you see those? Am I sponsored by Presonus? Oh wait, I paid for those out of pocket?Now, as it relates to sound I’ve said 1000 times, sounds are subjective and I can fool anyone by tweaking any sound to make it amazing if I want to. I think Alesis has some great sounds but I think most are over saturated and don’t sound natural but 1) I can make it work and sound great 2) there’s more to the electric drum than just the sound. I think Alesis can be better if they make some other technical upgrades. But right now, Simmons is outshining them.

    I have done the research and the thing is that you dont need an App for the electronic drums, or blutooth
    You can connect any Aux blutooth adapter on the market and it will work.
    If you want to edit your drums with Alesis you can always use Ezdrummer or Addictive drums, Superior Drums or whatever Plugin you like over USB.
    Also what you can do with Alesis modul is to import all the Ezdrummer and other samples into your module and load them later standalone like you have plugin.
    You dont need big screen and all that because is usable perfectly already like this for years.

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  Před 2 lety +3

      I think you’ve completely missed the point most likely you own an Alesis. Let me see if I can clarify this for you.
      1) never said you “needed” and app. I said they should make one because wit can make life easier.
      2) I also said that you can EQ the “native” sounds.
      3) if you’re switching to EZDrummer you’ve already dismissed the native sounds. I’m speaking of the native sounds and ease of use. The fact that they charge all that money for a Gameboy screen is pathetic.
      4) the fact that you need to buy a Bluetooth adapter to be able to use it that way is a shame at this price point.
      4) you can also download all those plugin sounds to the simmons… that means simmons can do everything and more than the Alesis.
      4) using ezdrummer and all those other drums is NOT editing the sounds that brining in sounds.
      5) the idea that they’ve done it this way for years means it’s fine is not cool. It is not fine. It’s time for Alesis to admit they’re behind and catch up with the Guitar Center house brand.

      No one have at home like regular device ipad or iphone tablets, that is rare case to have, so you need to buy one, so if you buying those ultra expensive devices you can buy Windows Tablet, and guess what, you can record and edit and do so much more in Cubase, Protools etc programs or just run stand alone Ezdrummer, Steven Slate for quick plug and play.
      Buying ipad or iphone to be just on the module shitty sounds is just insane money spend.

      @@DugiDevetCarabolium 😂
      Now I get it… you are failing to understand the purpose of the tablet. It is not to be used as a replacement for the module. When it comes to controlling the module and modifying the sounds the Simmons module is better than the Alesis and Yamaha. Now…. To make it even easier they’ve created an app. The app gives you even easier access to changing and editing sounds because your phone or tablet is larger.
      All of the functions that are on the module are on the app. Plus, you can do way more with the app… one example is you can pull up a song from your music library… iTunes for example… and then play that song in your AirPods or any other headset… while playing the drums at the same time…. All via Bluetooth. This means you don’t need external sound systems cables… etc., all you need is the phone or tablet. Oh, and you can use your phone to record sounds to add to the module… and you… listen the app has some really cool things it can do.
      Now for the point I keep making…
      You can’t use a tablet with Alesis at all. They don’t have Bluetooth or an app for the crimson II. You can’t add any type of tablet or phone to them as a controller. They don’t have Bluetooth capability until you spend $3000
      See because you can’t get the Simmons you’re not understanding what I mean by Bluetooth connectivity or using the app.
      Just to clarify… the app isn’t about sounds… it’s about editing sounds first… like when people say Simmons sounds are cheap… they only prove they’re treating simmons like Alesis and Roland… simmons gives the user the ability to edit the sounds to the users liking… first on the module and second on the app. Neither of the others can do that. Then they go further with way more things the app will allow.
      I’d suggest you look up the app and read what it can do. As it relates to all the off module programs… those shouldn’t be part of this discussion.

    Last Question: I'm considering the Simmons SD1250 to replace an acoustic kit as a way to get back into gigs (after 40+ years gigging). My hope is that I can just fold the kit up when the gig's done and walk away with minimal teardown, leaving all cables, etc in place and other than an amp or minor repositioning, it'd save me the time of setup/teardown with an acoustic kit. I'm always the 1st one there and last to leave, while the guitarists, horn & keyboard players just fold it up and go. Thoughts?

      @@KeithronPowell Keith, I will be using this kit to gig once a week for a few hours, and then sometimes at home for practice, etc. I know you use other software to get better sounds for the 1250, but are the sounds really sub-standard? Hey ive watched just about every video on the Simmons sd1250 and even bought one myself. Good sounds and has what you want out of a MODULE, but overall this kit will NOT last. The triggers are not good and if you consistently play rock music these triggers will fail on you. Exactly what i was trying to avoid with his. Ive heard Alesis to be more reliable and obviously price friendly. Bottom line: unless you are on a budget or a beginner….BUY A ROLAND. Dont waste time or money on these. Forget both of these sets. Just go on Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, Reverb, etc and buy a used Roland kit (like the TD-9, TD-11, TD-15) in great condition for half the price of these new kits. It will last you a lot longer and the sounds that come with the Roland modules are very good especially with the sound sculpting capabilities. The Bass kick pads for these Alesis and Simmons kit have a BIG problem with malfunctioning due to wire disconnection. Neither of those kits in this video are terrible by any means but it makes no sense to pay $1000+ for either when you can buy something better for half the price.
