You want to control their thinking abilities? Flood their minds with entertainment programs from this world like musical pop idol shows, movies, drama, musical pop idol shows and musical pop idol shows. You can thin out the herd to some extent AND make some extra cash along the way.
I mean, it worked in Japan at a time, imagine if you bring it to a medieval-like civilization...
“Why did they come to attack us?”
I dunno, how about because YOU attacked THEM?
Ain't it odd how that works?
For comparable culture shock, see the 1632 series in which the mercenary armies of the Thirty Years War (And those that employed them) are put in the crosshairs of a West Virginia mining town from 2000. The series is basically a roaring rampage of revenge for the peasants that had to suffer the theft, kidnappings, rape, and pillaging caused by the people fighting in the conflict.
Right? She acts like her country is completely innocent, not that the first contact they had with new country was a violent attack and enslavement of civilians she’s either arrogant or ignorant of her countries actions to be surprised by their presence
I think Piña didn’t know about the Empire’s attack. She found that much much later.
Max Smith pretty sure that’d mean massive civilian casualties
@Max Smith Im going to level with you, that would be very illegal and will constitute as war crimes and genocide... also violating all of the geneva convention's regulations for warfare and treatment of local populous and prisoners, and since it is the Japanese armed forces that are fighting, they are forced to uphold the conventions, no matter the dimension. While they could indeed do that, if word got out that they did it, the entirety of Japan will be up shit creek.
So in the future please think about what your words are suggesting before you suggest a genocide.
Sincerely, a Jew

Sun Tzu says "In war, numbers alone confer no advantage" his principle of defeating the enemy with as little resources used and as few casualties as possible defines this well. War costs money and lives, many generals in the past have their large armies face against each other head on, on the battlefield to show their strength, courage and military power. Sun Tzu has no care for such trifling things, HE ONLY WANTS TO WIN.
Sun Tzu is the idealist, _Clausewitz_ is the man you have to read and is the realist.
"In war, numbers alone confer no advantage"
While the statement alone may be true, attrition is actually an important factor in warfare today. The main reason axis powers fell in WW2 was because of attrition, both by wearing away at personnel but also cutting them off from vital resources. The biggest enemy of the Luftwaffe and the German armored infantry wasn't simply allied resistance, it was lack of oil and steel which were both virtually nonexistent in German territory therefore they had to make incursions into africa and scandinavia to get them.
@K Note Which reinforces the quote. Numbers ALONE. You may have a bigger army just by recruiting every able hand, that's numbers alone. But it doesn't make your army stronger, on the contrary it makes it weaker because it needs more resources.
You need to find a balance between the force you need to face your enemy, the force you can build, and the force you can maintain trough time.
@@moteroargentino7944 Exactly look at the situation in ukraine today as the prime example of this very principle as well as his maxin on Supplies. the larger ""more equipped force'"" has found itself steadily beaten back by a smaller more determined force that was place effectively on deathground ---yet another maxim he says to avoid-- with the end result that the larger forces numbers have essentially come to naught.

The light novel and manga showed inner monologues like Pina thinking of stealing a few weapons and try to reverse engineer it for them to stand a chance. That is when the tanks appeared shattering that idea, also Lelei took a few used bullets to help her in her explanation.
I did remember she did a weapon from a fallen soldier from a foreign nation. But due to the metal scanner.
Even if she did steal a few, the empire has neither the advanced scientific knowledge needed to know how to gather the proper elements to created gunpowder nor the industrial capabilities required to manufacture the precise parts required to replicate said rifle.
@@hisdudeness8328
@his dudeness83
Without just a gunpowder firearm it would take them almost 300 years or more at least to know its mechanism, now imagine with tanks or missiles
@@Rangel_MX it would take them a good while to figure out the mechanisms. However the mechanics of guns are often easy to understand for the user, so much so that an idiot is able to understand it.
Despite that I would think that understanding how it works doesn't matter, the real issue lies in making the metals strong enough to handle the pressures of a firearm. Not only that but most modern ammunition use smokeless gunpowder which is much more difficult to make than blackpowder.
Guns have been on this earth since the I believe the 10th century and it took us about 800-900 years to move away from black powder to smokeless cartridges along with proper modern auto loading firearms
@@riclate2013 I should add one caveat to this... they could make a decent firearm with the tech they have. It wouldn't be as advanced as the ones the JSDF are using, but they could still do it. Muzzle and Breach-loading firearms are fairly easy to make for that tech level, lever and pump actions aren't that far off once you have the basics down. So technically they could make decent firearms, and train their soldiers how to use them. But they'd be hard pressed to defeat the Interceptor Vests the JSDF are wearing, and the JSDF can put _A LOT_ more fire down range then the Empire could soldier for soldier.

2:08 No matter how many times I see it I always appreciate the little detail of the Type 74 Using it's Hydro Pneumatic Suspension to level itself out.
Armored warfare is insanely underrated in this anime. (Spoiler alert) In the later episodes of manga there are scenes where the 式-74s were facing Zorzal's guerilla counterattack using huge monsters. The titans skins are so thick they can't be penetrated by small caliber rounds, but oh boy can you imagine their reaction when the type 74 rolls out into the battlefield spitting out 105mm hot leads, which penetrates the titan like god's rod.
Also I believe they also began to appreciate the level of armorness of the main battle tank had when they attempted to ram them with a battering ram, which of course only ripped off the side-skirts. Boulders were also thrown onto the tanks by the titans which stunned the crews, but also showed that the tanks managed to leave unscathed.

People arguing that Japan was being unrealistic here, that they would have in reality been more ruthless in their campaign into the other world after having been attacked without provocation or declaration of war. Have you all forgotten that this is exactly what Imperial Japan did against America back in World War 2?
Attacked Pearl Harbor without provocation, with the declaration of war only arriving after the massive bombing attack on their port in Hawaii, invaded one of their territories, their colony the Philippines which was in the process of being granted independence, bombed Manila despite being declared an open city, and committed atrocities against America's soldiers and their Philippine allies, such as the infamous Bataan Death March. A slew of others and yet look at what America did, they went in, defeated the Imperial Japanese Navy and their army, and used restraint in using atomic bombs. Yes, as heartless and immoral as America was for using atomic bombs, they could have been more liberal with their use and dropped multiple atomic bombs (like dropping both atomic bombs at the same time) across all of Japan, but instead only dropped one at a time until Japan stopped being stubborn and finally surrendered.
After that, did America abuse Japan? No, instead they simply reformed Japan and still treated them humanely, eventually transforming Japan into one of the leading democracies of the modern world. That's why I don't think how Japan acts in this anime isn't as far-fetched as others think. One could argue they're simply putting into practice the way America operates, keeping in mind how they were fairly treated after the war as one of the basis for how they operate and interact in the other world. They could have been subdued and annexed by America, but instead they were allowed freedom and even had it guaranteed by America.
this makes a lot of sense. way to go.
Well if they did some sh*t, you wouldn’t know how much of a pain politicians will get from sjw’s and sensitive snowflakes. So better keep it flowin
You have a very oversimplified view of history my friend. There was a loooooot more nuance than that.
Well they technically can't have a proper military after the war (but I think that already been reversed). The US also changed the japan royal inheritance practice where now only the male descendant from male royal line can be the heir. So if their emperor or prince didn't have son, that basically doomed the royal family since the son from the princesses can't be heir. They actually didn't abuse the japanese from the goodness of their heart, they just learn from WW1 where if you push a country a too hard, they become extremist like nazi germany. But I guess they forgot about that during the iraq and afghanistan invasion.
There is also the fact unlike America, Japan couldn't occupy the entire Empire for 20 or so years while burning billions of dollars in subduing warlords and insurgencies post-invasion

The 'They don't even need to be close to someone to kill them!' line is really irritating to me. Like, guns are a gamechanger, but that's not the reason at all, it just smacks of simplistic writing (And someone who apparently forgot that bows and arrows are- in fact- real; let alone wizards of which one is in the scene!)
Rather, you'd want to write about how you can cut straight through a shield or armour with ease, something a bow and arrow couldn't do, or maybe show the carnage of the battlefield, with so many bodies in one place you can't even clean them all up (Or even have construction vehicles rolling the bodies away- which is both grim, and to an ancient commander would look far more scary than some rifle company, at which point you can terrify them by treating casually these devices which would easily revolutionise warfare for their nation.).
I really liked the concept of gate, but they should've put some more effort into the writing- I felt it wasted a lot of potential with half baked modern-perspective stuff like this tbh (Beyond even the weird nationalism that oozes out of every other scene).
The weird nationalism comes from the author who is ex-JSDF and a far right ultranationalist so I give that one a pass.
But yeah, I agree, they could've done better.
there is so much story potential here and its all wasted, the entire thing is basically propaganda for the JSDF above all else
@@CepheusTalks I mean it kinda is in the beginning
Man I get your point and all, but the one who said the line was the princess, who just found out how guns work 2 mins ago.
@@Riccccccc I kind of re-watched this, and it ended up making it wierder for me. An English long bow was supposedly effective out to something like 320m. The Japanese Howa 89 has an effective range of something like 500m. That's a pretty considerable difference, but it's not unimaginable to these people. They've certainly got weapons that can do that, even skipping on the fact that some of these guys are throwing a 1d6 fireball spell.
I would kinda get the range comment if it was about something like artillery. Artillery can kill you without being anywhere near you. Even today, weapons like that are unimaginably scary. That weapon would deserve a 'They don't even need to be near us to kill us!', because you can just be walking along, and even with a whole search party looking around you, you might just suddenly be dead- and that's that.
The reason I say that is because writing as some weird quirks. One of the big ones is that people are sort of 'on top of their game'. Misunderstandings need to exist for a plot useful purpose. There's no point in misleading your audience about the world if you don't need to, because every inaccuracy risks ticking somebody off, while amounting to 'wasted words'. You then also risk leaving your audience with an incorrect view on your world, which can really bite you in the tail later if it happens at the wrong time!
In all honesty though, while I can write paragraphs on how you could've made this scene truly impactful, and properly convey the fear these people should have, it all just boils down to the fact that I really really liked the premise of Gate, and was sad when it ended up being awful.
We can't give you freedom but we can give you know to acquire it
