“Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword obviously never encountered automatic weapons.” ― Douglas MacArthur
The pen is what made the weapons built by the banking cartels. One pen by a banker and you are a slave to the system for life.
The pen is still mightyer than the automatic machine gun. The whole basis of this saying is that those who fight with weapons are much less powerful than those who sign the decleration of war.

"Parry this, you fucking casual!" The Anime.
Imagine how terrifying it is for a knight, who trained his entire life and mastered the art of combat so effectively, lesser men are afraid to draw their swords. He built a physique worthy of praise, the strength comparable to an ox and the fighting tenacity of a wild animal.
He learns to command armies of similarly skilled men, formations that encircle the enemy. Truly, he has earned this position through hard work and dedication...
Only for him to be the first to be killed be .556 caliber bullets shot by someone who is 6 months into the job.
Ngl its funnier if u think about it in a sense that a soldier who's first battle is this battle and his first kill happens to be some enemy commander he had no idea was the commander xd😅
"sir I shot some dude running first with some guys running behind him"
"Kevin that was their commander"
"damn, sucks to be him sir!"
You got caliber and mm mixed up its 5,56mm or .223 caliber
Hehehehe...
Essentially how longbow men were considered. Almost every man was somewhat proficient with a longbow and most kingdoms required them to have ready access to their own longbows and a hundred arrows since they would be conscripted to form an archery unit. That's why in Europe the two finger "peace" sign can be considered offensive. Because those were the two draw fingers and sometimes they would get cut off. Essentially a modern day finger gun/cut throat gesture peasants would do to mock knights who had trained all their life
minor note: all the troops in the JSDF in Gate use the older (and bigger) 7.62 mm NATO bullets, mostly the old cold war battle rifle, the FN FAL. The JSDF in the "special zone" basically are all using all old Cold War equipment rather than the latest & greatest, b/c there's no need for a stealth fighter or helicopter when those old F4's & Hueys & Cobras will work just fine; and they're reusing all the old crap that was in storage, while the latest stuff is used in Japan. I think they specifically talk about the rifles... they use the older bullets b/c they're bigger & heavier and go through the medieval armor & shields better. :D

For those unaware, the common media trope of pulling out an impaled object is a REALLY bad idea in real life, because the object impaled within the injury, similar to a sink stopper, plugs the wound and creates pressure that significantly reduces bleeding, especially internally. An impaled object should be secured in place to prevent wiggling, and left for professionals in an environment where the bleeding can be properly controlled to remove and handle. In this situation, probably some sort of Field Hospital.
yeah, but its weird that hese having to tell that to a person thats clearly wearing the markings of a medic. im sure the medic knows well enough not to pull it out. he could have been saying it to one of the previous soldiers, but the medic is the one patching him up while hese still talking and not focusing on the battle.

From what I remember, most of the time they sliced off the shaft of the arrow leaving just a couple of inches, or if the tip had a clear way out, they pushed it all the way through instead of pulling it out (because of the barbs/hooks).
But I don't think it was done to prevent bleeding, the main concern was leaving something inside as they removed the arrow. The wound channel itself was not that big, not very different from a bullet wound today. A piece of cloth can handle the blood just fine. The danger is the internal damage.
maybe its just me but the part where the guy tells the king "the enemy is raining from the sky" had to be one of the most daunting and memorable parts about this anime
Actually during WW II the Japanese army was stupified when American paratroopers arrived. They had never seen anything like it and didn't really understand what was happening according to some accounts.
@@PWingert1966
That is a lie the Japanese literally had paratroopers themselves that kicked ass in the Dutch East Indies.
Maybe the civilians would be surprised to see paratroopers but an army men would not.
@@HappyGM-R Thank you for the correction. I have not actually tried to verify the information and heard it many years ago so just passed it along assuming that since I had never heard anything to the contrary it must have been factual to some extent.
@@PWingert1966 Some Melanesians had never seen advanced technology before the Japanese and Americans started fighting on and around their islands. Both sides set up bases on the islands and the vast quantity of supplies airdropped to the bases (weapons, food, medicine, clothing, vehicles, etc.) amazed the locals. After WW2 ended and the bases were abandoned, "cargo cults" developed where they attempted to summon cargo and planes by ritualistically mimicking the soldiers (creating faux airstrips, doing military drills, and building replicas of airplanes). The weirdest of which is the John Frum cult, who worship John Frum, a mythic American soldier, who is said will bring wealth and goods to his worshipers.

The author was a soldier.
I appreciate the detail of the door opening on the C1 sometimes its the little things. Also the use of rifle grenades.
as a former paratrooper, they nailed everything from the deployment to the PLF. very accurate
Even for me who hasn't ever been a soldier, I have loved just investigating in learning more about basically anything including military history, tactics, and Technology uneven things down to how they did the parachuting it's pretty accurate especially primarily with the dropping of the heavier part of the bag so they land first meaning you land with less weight and the technique they have the soldiers use as they actually finally touchdown themselves was also pretty neat

Can you imagine the PTSD the survivors wind up with? That nobleman who lost limbs and an eye, was transformed by his experience. But he found his own way of getting through it. How many of these imperial soldiers just up and killed themselves later on because they kept reliving those nightmares again and again?

I remember at one point the British were at war with the Scots. And muskets were used on the battlefield but the Scots still had a traditional highland charge where they would rush in with swords drawn and shields. And some British officers accounts were horrifying. The swords generally didint leave nice clean cuts. So where were people missing fingers hands arms hanging by bits of skin. One account of a guys cheek being cut down to the chin and just barely hanging on and flopping around. So idk swords were pretty brutal I’m sure they already had ptsd.

Well the author is an actual JSDF himself so that why it's so accurate
The details get more insane in the manga from rifle fire, bullet expansion, tracer fire, shape charge, tank shots and environmental destruction were all drawn almost 1 to 1 physic wise to IRL, but the anime has limited budget and talents so they'd have to make do.
I love firearms and firearms technology and am active in 3d printing firearms communities and I absolutely love the attention to detail they had with the Type 64s, I went into this anime blind only knowing "modern military absolutely rocks the shit out of ancient civilization" and tbh with how accurate they made the type 64, I'd say someone who helped make the anime definitely knew or had experience with one

Medieval age: one armored knight can pacify hundreds of peasants.
Modern age: one civilian with a gun can pacify hundreds of armored knights
The first one is exaggeration.
The second is fact
@@Kncperseus The first one is just a saying from my old history teacher to describe how feudalism works.

@@swordbrethrenmordred1230 I'm not talking about a heavy cavalry charge, but one armored knight with weapons facing hundreds of angry peasants. He may take down a dozen, maybe even 2 or 3 dozens, but hundreds? Yeah, exaggeration.
Best guess - this was propaganda. Maybe there was a couple such knights who were Gregor Clegane level crazy strong who were very difficult to kill, and in the meantime could kill a hundred. Later in the manga the war mongers faction would start using guerrilla tactics, surprise attacks and even refugees to deal a lot more casualties to the japanese, and when a battle fails they would always have someone from their intelligence service learning how the battle failed, this would later made the jsdf have a lot more casualties.
And in one of the rescue missions almost failed because the rescue team had to fight through cavalry charges that makes evacuation by air impossible, ambushes which involve the enemy using range weapons like crossbows.
At the end all soldiers were wounded and they had low ammunition but no one died because they improvised and used the enemy's shields against ambush and they were later rescued by Itamis team after resisting for one entire night.

gate.fandom.com/wiki/Takumi_Yanai
Rambling Thoughts Ahead:
I imagine that he has pride for the JSDF and his country. I don't think National pride is a bad thing, even though it can lead to darker paths. I can argue that any belief oriented groups/tribes can go down any path, productive or destructive.
Maybe the author had a very similar thought process. The author is accused of Nationalism by making the JSDF over powered and a moral paragon. Their actions aren't scrutinized by the public and other countries enough, for reality. People have seen this work as propaganda and a recruiting tool.
All these views are valid by perspective, however I propose we just enjoy it as art for what it is. Whatever the author/creator's assumed intentions are, is not the only way to experience a art piece. We can come to our own individual conclusions of how something makes us feel.
@@zactionmedia2591 Hey it was the same case with Star ship troopers written by a us marine to recruit us marines but damn did it make a good bug killing movie to
Accurate depiction. Nice.👍👍
@@thewildcardperson actually starship troopers was a parody of facism. You know, enemies are alien subhumans, only soldiers get to vote, ultra patriotic children toying with bullets, public TV broadcasted executions? It was clearly making fun of militaristic governments.the makers even said they where disappointed so many people felt good about it and missed the dystopia theme.

For some reason

I used to be a JSDF soldier, until I took an arrow to the arm.

香車……
Bruhhhh I'm deaddd
I know the whole thing is bananas, but for me it's especially unbelievable whenever the JSDF gets in hand to hand combat with these guys. If you let a classical or medieval soldier get that close to you, I'm pretty sure you're the one who's going to be out of your depth.
That was the only thing that irks me too. Modern soldiers get the bare minimum training in hand-to-hand compared to the soldiers of old. A medieval man-at-arms would slaughter any modern soldier barring spec ops in a melee.
@@thelouster5815
medieval people got taught sword fighting
modern military get taught martial arts
it would be harder than it shows but 1 trained marine can take down a man-at-arms, with minimal damage
@@djthefox6762 Bruh this is some majorly low iq thinking here. Hand based martial arts does not beat sword based martial arts. Yes, sword fighting is martial arts. Not only are modern marines trained way less in CQC compared to medieval soldiers, but a sword in CQC is a colossal advantage, armor doubly so. This should be extremely obvious from the get-go.
@@thelouster5815
Sorry, I made that in the middle of the night
And I was going off of US Marines, which are trained a good deal, not as much as a medieval knight by a longshot
@@djthefox6762 Yeah sorry my guy, but that is straight cap. Without his gun, a marine would get slaughtered by a medieval Man-At-Arms in a melee. Sword fighting beats unarmed martial arts 9.99/10 times, and beats knife combat 9.9/10 times. There’s a reason swords, spears and the like existed for so long.

Honestly, the single most impressive thing about this is how willing those horses were to continue charging forward straight into gunfire.
fr, realistically if a horse saw gunfire they'd get scared and run the opposite direction
They did it all the time in ww1 2 and waterloo
@@inigochicano pretty sure war horses are meant to be brave enough to handle it tho. However it's medieval so not sure about those horses

You absolutely have to hand it to the courage of the soldiers facing down an enemy with mind numbingly advanced tech when all you have is a stick and string that throws another pointy stick.
A Japan Civ player that managed to acquire lots of free tech boosts and managed to reach the Information Age, while Rome Civ was still in the Medieval Age. Also they're playing with MODs, which explains the Dragons and other fantasy elements.
Honestly seeing a modern army take down a medieval position is just so satisfying, especially with such clean animation and art
It's horrible, I feal terrible for them. It's like shooting POWs... Oh, it makes sense now.
It helps that the medieval force is the one that was committing war crimes (and slavery). If it was reversed (the high-tech force committing war crimes), this anime would be a lot different
@@toddkes5890 true

Knights? When did they fight knights? I've not seen the anime at all, I'm just basing it off of this video alone.
I like the focus not just on the technological advantage but the overwhelming strategic/tactical superiority. Military strategy has evolved tremendously since the days of when knights on horse back rained supreme.

I just love the concept of modern technology absolutely annihilating and steamrolling through/against medieval technology.
Why? No seriously I have no idea
Then you need to read japan summons or nihonkoku shoukan, the concept is same but you will find medieval era country until ww2 era country plus it has a magical country, and japan with the latest modern science technology will be isekai to that planet😅
Edit : You can also find unique battle such as modern destroyer vs medieval man o war or ww2 battleship yamato look alike
@@itswrs6159 Taking one of the worlds weakest first world militaries and putting them up against armies throughout history. Sounds like it could be interesting, as long as it's not an exusse to get revenge on 40s America.
That could be fun. Seeing how difrant factions and leaders react and fight against a superior foe would be interesting, expesauly if they fought someone like Bismarck or the Caesar.
.
Idea is cool but this anime is super one sided by making japans army look godlike for the sake of it. There was literally no conflict. Not even againdt a dragon.
You can make everything as gate or medieval vs modern, I did this in minecraft, rts games, gmod, call of duty or more with mods, or maybe boardgames that are use as conquering
This anime is what got me back into it. I absolutely adore this show.
She was feeling him. The birth of one of the many ships that were suddenly dumped on us out of nowhere! 😂😂
There's something oddly satisfying about watching a medieval Frontline get blown up with a rifle grenade...
Their reaction I suppose
Probably the fact that it's the soldiers of the worthless prince that are getting slaughtered right in front of him and he can't do anything about it!
Because they literally stormed threw a portal and brutally murdered Japanese civilians out of nowhere and practically declared war on Japan.
No, it's because media has always portrayed medieval folks WITH MAGIC defeating modern military, and our modern armaments are always depicted as useless in front of these sword-toting and staff-wielding magical enemies.
They forget that despite our limits in the real world, we still could develop weapons of mass destruction. Imagine if we could integrate said 'magic' stuff into our real modern technology; those medieval-era magical civilizations won't take us lightly then.
@@f1r3hunt3rz5 magic in this anime though is pretty weak cause if you see other animes that has God tier or demon lord type magics, the military or special forces wouldn't stand a chance.

Gate is honestly an amazing anime (set aside the harem subplot) It isnt just "modern military kicks knight ass" its also heavily political between 2 different time periods and mindsets, with good story telling (aside from the hot springs episode) and a stark contrast between modern and ancient ethics
dunno, i mean the jsdf was doing their best to not be just be "good god ol'chap it's colonizing time" but at the end they still ended doing all the XIXth century colonizer routine.
The subplots are so distracting! It wasted too much time that could have been put in this war theme'd anime. If only there was at least some kind of third season to compensate for all that boring subplot
I agree, but the anime version butchered a lot of great plot. I can't tell much because I didn't read the Light Novel version, but in manga version, it's more gruesome and complicated yet more understandable.
One of the biggest disappointment is how they butchered Princess Pina character development. Like when she's desperately trying to keep his brother Diablo to stay in the castle by literally offering herself to have sex, and when she see Bozes got saved by JSDF and she felt betrayed because no one saved her, and when she's really given up on keeping the empire together by rejecting to become a crown princess.
@Sentiental same, ruined it for me.
This. The entire first contact arc and subsequent movements to try and establish peace amongst cultural differences, language barriers and petty squabbling bureaucrats was an absolute delight. It's like West Wing but with a side of Age of Empires, gently seasoned with Band of Brothers extract. Gate season 1 might be one of my anime of all time.
I love this anime for how realistic things could evenly mix up with fantasy, it doesn't just focus on our world or their world, it focuses on both, expanding the fantasy world while also applying relistic modern military tactics
"We made them retreat." Was probably on their mind. Meanwhile they lost nobody. and sustained minor injury overall. Not only did the empire guys lose but those not thinking long enough may even think they won.
The reasons a lot of their equipment is older is because Japan didn’t want to send valuable stuff to another unknown land and having it potentially being lsot
That makes no sense why would you deploy troops into a unknown portal with shitty tier gear.....
Actually it is quite different in the comic, in the comic the empire actually blockade the gate with barricade and ballista, and the JSDF storms through the barricade with Type 10 and Type 90 (Type 10 Been the most modern and Type 90 been their last generation of MBT looks like leopard 2a4 and 2a5) following it with IFV and APC shooting 35mm cannon and 40mm grenades. It is later that the assaulting force have their equipment swapped because of fear of losing state of the art equipment.

In the latest chapters, F-15Js fighting WW2-level Antares fighters, The Type-10 MBTs defeating early WW2-level tanks of the Gra Valkas Empire, WW2 equipment and tactics are being defeated using 21st-century weapons, tactics and the lessons from every wars and bloodshed from Earth.
