They had recounted me what had happened on that field of battle. Mountains of corpses, oceans of blood. Many lost on only one side and my Lord slain. I was a loyal man and in my dying days, I have had many a day to reflect on that battle...Did my Lord betray us and send us like lambs to the slaughter? Were we just pawns in some kind of sick game? Who were those men we were fighting? I fear I'll never know these answers. I place myself in the hands on God and pray that I may meet my Lord in the heavens above and find the answers I seek."

Gate has some of the most one-sided battles ever and I love it.
Modern Tech is usually underpowered in anime. This is a veryyyy nice middle finger to that concept.

Seeing them trying to block bullets with their shields brings a smile to my face.
I find this oddly satisfying yet I feel overwhelmingly sorry for these guys
Considering these guys are loosely based on the Romans, the shield they used was the Scutum(depending on which period) which was typically made from wood so it doesn't surprise me that bullets cut through like a hot knife through butter.

Crazy mystical powers will not work against modern humanity. Germany during Nazi era would decimate the entire mystical army. MG42s and chemical weapons. Comparing it to America is their worse nightmare. America has the access to the Ac130 which would kill literally all of the mystical powered armies but even if they have insane powers they wouldn’t survive russia’s tsar bomba nuke.

Well I think one of the guys I charge was a former JSDF Member, which can explain slot of the military accuracy in this Anime.
@@bestgeneration89 The JSDF actively advised the studio that worked on this anime, which is why there's a lot more military accuracy in this one than others of a similar nature.
The JSDF assault on the capital is the best example of this.

Secondly, I'm not laughing at people dying, I'm appreciating the fact that this anime understands that 5.56 bullets(and honestly, any bullet really) not only penetrate shields quite easily, but do so without even breaking stride... medieval shields weren't even able to stand up to early muskets, let alone modern service rifles from the 2010s...
Hence why there are billions of guns in service and... exactly zero shields.
Well I mean, riot shields, but they aren't used in actual combat so it doesn't count.

Imperials looked exactly like Romans with armor not fully fitted through.
Meanwhile the Knights that are similar from 1200s to 1400s are fully armored, quite like Pina's Knight order.
A Mishmash of Old bronze age and Dark age medieval.
Still a single 5.56 could penetrate no matter the armor they wear, even magic couldn't protect them from the kinetic penetration.

A lion putting an unruly bobcat in its place.
Not to mention the medieval guys attacked Japanese citizens first - turnabout massacre is completely justified, especially when they keep deciding to engage the modern soldiers who have proven to be able to decimate their outdated forces again and again.

The Xeelee is a sci fi race that's so far in technology that they can manipulate reality. (Thus making them prety op) Yes you can say that a wizard can be all powerfull in a novel but the same goes for technology. They are not bound by the limitations that we have in reality. The creators simply chose to put a generic fantasy world against our modern world. And this is prety much what they tought was gonna happen. So I don't realy know why your saying this.

Games can show you how a gun sorta works but it leaves up important things like the weight of the gun, how your fingers move when you reload, work the gun, how to retain magazine, how to handle recoil.

I said this in another video about this show. The Medieval guys are lucky they where only fighting against the JDF which is a Defensive military sure they went on the attack a few times. But just think of the carnage if one of the bigger nations was the ones they where fighting. U.S.A, Russia, China. The war would be over in a week.
imagine fighting nations a bit back in time like Nazi germany or Soviet russia or even WW2 america. the morals of modern day war would't apply and Nukes or biological warfare would be used. imagine the death tolls....

Imagine Germany in 1939 with Hitler in full swing as chancellor instead of making a move on Poland going through the gate and using the full might of the Wehrmacht plus chemical weapons like mustard gas to quickly and efficiently kill everyone who opposed his army to create free resources for his armed forces or even not needing to start WW2 as he would have a whole new world to dominate and after that dominate the rest of our world since that would make Germany one if not THE richest place on earth. Similarly Soviet Russia would do the same and given the bigger population of Russia (and therefore military personnel) it would be probably even easier for them to do it. As for the US i meant after WW2 they started making moves on other countries to prove and flex their military might against the Soviet bloc so imagine doing that while secretly having a second more important yet less demanding front in a parallel dimension that grants you free oil(as japan was interested in during the anime so we know that they have some) and free extra land for resource production or even experimentation so the use of nuclear weapons would be easier and less frowned upon as opposed to using them on Vietnam or w/e else the US fought after WW2. that is what i meant and i didn't want to write all of that down when i made the original comment but as of now i am bored as fuck so this is the extended approach ;)

Gate not only has one of the best "One-Sided Battles", they also gave the munitions that the JDSF had access to at the time the actual _punch_ they really have.
So much Sci-Fi and fantasy genres like to underplay IRL weaponry, just so they can make the their Sci-Fi or Fantasy worlds look a million times more badass than they truly would be... Such as having Laser Pistols that can somehow act as pocket snipers and outshoot anti-material rifles, or weak Mages that can somehow tank 9mm parabellum even though they go down to swords easily...

Let me remind you all the title is wrong this is slaughter not a battle
I get why this is a slaughter. If given the same chance the Empire would do the same, so all is fair in "love and war". It sucks if you are on the losing side, It has been this way from when humans came up with the concept of fighting.
This battle is over the top in casualties/deaths. The purpose of a defense would be to keep the Empire soldiers away, or demoralize them so the back off. I would suppose that any army would have figured out that they were in a hopeless disadvantage and pull back to re-consolidate and come up with a different plan. They could have even used smaller groups to test the lines or recon. Instead they marched their entire army into an unknown enemy. A real battle wouldn't have worked this way.
This battle/slaughter is only for fictional story building, not reality. It's entertaining because no person was really harmed in this fight.

Indeed. If I remember correctly in the manga there are panels where cavalry is charging citizens, demi-humans killing citizens, and some imperial soldiers planting a flag atop a mountain of corpses. So clearly they didn't have any peaceful intention, and the JSDF's response, while excessive when compared to the technological level of the Empire, is justified when you see what the Empire did in Japan. At least that's my opinion.
To be fair, considering the Empire's attitude when invading Japan (they were acting like conquerors, and believed they were superior to the "barbarians" they were invading), it's hard to feel sorry for them.

Now, this is how I want to see humanity enter the world of fantasy... Compleatly realistic and I am proud to say this is one of the best Anime and my favorite of all time.
The moment I saw the first clip, I knew I had to watch it. Love it, one of my favorites. I did like how they made that general guy smart. He did everything right in trying to get at the forces on Alnus Hill undetected. Even when detected, he still had the right idea of closing with the JSDF. Get in close and the JSDF's tanks can't shoot for fear of killing friendlies and while firearms still obviously outclass swords and plate armor, at least they'd be able to kill the men of the JDSF.
Imagine spending years to train with armor and shield, honing your skill to perfection only to get absolutely yeeted by a tank

What makes this series all the more hilarious is that Japan’s military is strictly for self-defense, as their name implies. After their defeat in World War II and the tremendous shame the people and imperial government felt for their atrocities in China and all of Southeast Asia, the new armed forces were constructed strictly for self-defense only, even as U.S. officials offered to remilitarize Japan in the wake of the Cold War to counter the communist Chinese. This means that a medieval superpower the size of the late Mongol Empire got curbstomped by a military that wasn’t even meant to be on the offensive. Had the Gate opened in Washington, DC, Moscow, or Beijing, not only would their entire empire be destroyed in the span of days, but would most likely lose all sovereignty and become an exploitable territory for the United States, Russia, or China (all of whom in-series are trying to bribe Japan to gain access to Falmart, with the U.S. allowed entry and Russia and China considering invading Japan to seize control of the Gate for themselves).
I have never watched a single anime in my life nor will I ever want to, but this series is my exception for its interesting premise

The other part of the premise is that this 'gate' just appeared. It could just as easily disappear at any time, so in the Anime, anyone going through was potentially going to be stuck there, so they stock piled a FOB, then industrialized the region immediately and began working on self sufficiency, turning the FOB into an actual city in a matter of months, never quite knowing when the 'gate' may just not be there.
It is a fantasy world where the Japanese integrate into their colonial position rather than loot, plunder and surpress the local populace. In other words, a fantasy about how they could have expanded Japanese influence rather than how they did so.

For those complaining, no. This anime is NOT shitting on the fantasy genre. Rather it’s just showing how competent a modern military should be and how ignorant a medieval military might be when faced against an army wielding modern technology. The medieval military isn’t stupid. They just don’t know what the hell they’re facing because they’ve never fought an army from the 21st century before. We’ve come a long way from wielding swords, spears, and shields to carrying rifles, pistols, and grenades.
This is basically how the samurais Vs the Japanese government went down...
Unless the fact that the Samurai also use gun until they ran out of amunition.

The politics of it all certainly interests me. I don't mind a bit of romance on the side, so long as it doesn't take away from the key premise. Since I haven't seen the show (only read some pretty dope fanfiction where the gate opens in 1960s America), does the harem subplot get that bad?
Try the Manga, it show a hellva a lot more than what the Anime shows. Though do be mindful as the manga is far more graphic and more adult-esc depending on the chapters but there are plenty of references and alot more battles also does show how much of a tightrope Japan is crossing because of the gate opening in Ginza, Japan.

I know that tanks surrounded by infantry are a bad idea. But the horrified and desperation of the imperial armies soldiers as they try to hack at it with their swords all the while getting run over by what seems to be a steel monster that is impossibly heavy and impossibly fast all the while its muzzle flashes cuts swaths of soldiers down like a lawnmower is just something I would've loved to see.
the most satisfying moments in this scene is that they never touched a single soldier and BOOM BOOM
Throughout the whole anime they had only 1 casualty, a rando who took an arrow to the shoulder, he'll probably be fine.
