JSDF is just pure semantical name to circumvent Constitutional provision technically blocking of creation of the full fleshed Japanese Army... since said JSDF have more offensive hardware (tanks, planes, ships...) at its disposal than most World countries (of course except such powerhouses as USA, China or Russia) with one still active clausule that Japan can't use its military outside Japan without absolute authorization from the Parlament... but even that provision is right now under kind of reevaluation due growing up threat from the China (Russia got enough problems around Black Sea to even attempt stirr any conflict around Vladivostock area) and overall changes at the world stage (including rise of the radical islam) to for push a turn JSDF in to more pro active Force on the conflict areas around the globe...

The fact that the two biggest threats in the show are American, Russian, and Chinese assassins and the Japanese public's outrage over five soldiers being badasses really highlights the sheer amount of power imbalance.
It's like the writers watched an alternate history video on "How long could a modern military hold out in Roman times?", saw the answer was "Until their ammunition runs out," and decided to make an anime where the ammunition can't run out.

Assuming this army came over with a singular base on a technical term the only problems they’d have to deal with is food, water, fuel, and larger ammunition. Smaller ammo can be reproduced on base mainly as they’d need is bullets, gun powder, and primers. Assuming the base has all of these then the base can arm the army all it need short of artillery and armor for quite a while.
Now where in the timeline for the Roman’s? Trajan, more importantly when Trajan moved into Parthia
I mean, even if they did run out they have the Gate between both worlds secure.
No way in hell would someone from that medieval/magical world even THINK of getting near that Gate. Probably the most secure "Supply Line" in existence.
All other 'hitech visit lotech world' stories I have seen have them isolated and run out of ammo, fuel and spare parts. This is the first story I know where they have supply lines to an industrial nation.

if it hit the blades, it could damage the helo enough to throw off it's flight trajectory- and at that range, it'd just smack into the wall and crumple like a tin can (or, since this is anime, explode violently)

What I love about this anime, even though the JSDF knows that the enemy were technologically inferior, they didn't underestimate the enemy one bit.
They learned their lesson from Surigao Strait/Ironbottom Sound, no holding back punches and hit them with everything you've got.
Realistically, they are still a threat. Just not in a force on force sense. They can still go around slaughtering people in places the JSDF are not present. Also, they can still kill the SDF soldiers if they get close enough to engage them in melee. It would just come down to if they could get close enough to overwhelm them with numbers. That's why you see the SDF engage in sorties and limited time operations wherte they get in, kick ass, and get out.
@@Paul-cu9lu People really underestimate how big these ancient age armies can get, soldiers can only carry so much ammo and be at so many places at the same time.

For example, during the evacuation from the capital, the soldiers waiting for those two knights were falling back to the Chinook as the cavalry we're closing in. They would have been cut down had they stayed any longer, as there were more soldiers than the sdf had the ability to kill quickly. It's again why the jsdf relies on lightning strikes and highly mobile warfare to stay out of range of a primarily melee focused army.

It's honestly scary if you put yourself into their shoes. You're used to being able to see the enemy up close and personal, with swords and maces striking armor. But now you're going up against a faceless machine that is capable of killing hundreds of men in seconds with a click of a button.

Oh hohoho, in the novel and manga it gets even worse for the Empire's soldiers, Prince Idiot the Zorzal actually made the most deluded and arrogant nobles in his ranks army commanders and dubbed them Oprichiki, these idiots would summarily kill and torture anyone who show hints of intelligence in their soldiers, would outlaw any forms of retreat no matter how dire and would go so far to shot arrows at the backs of their own men to motivate them. Worse of all they overly favor melee human wave tactics as they view it the best way to show their superiority.

Japanese have a hard time putting the nukes in their animes with the same power as these devices have. Probably because they were the first and last to this day, who withstand two nuclear explosions firsthand. Interesting fact....there was a guy who survived both explosions and lived a long life.

I believe the JSDF is using the Bell AH-1S Cobra armed with a 20 mm M-197 gun turret. 730+-50 rounds per minute. Quick research so it could be wrong.

What would medieval man think of the mass destruction we can unleash today? This show does a fair comparison. Funny thing is, they didn't show the big guns. What would they think of the nuke?
These weapons are also dated by this point in 2019. As Earth's humanity, we are developing new weapons and concepts of weapons. Exoskeletons, robots, lasers, space based weapons, etc. Some may be illegal by agreements, doesn't mean it won't be made at some point.
Advanced technologies would seem like magic.

Nah, these are the recon force that were sent to know the Special Region. They wouldn't want to risk sending new weapons that have probability to be destroyed due to uncertainties. They know nothing about the world that is beyond the gate.

Carrying the axe won't be a problem if Rory is holding it, directly lifting the axe is the problem though
@@Kalashnikov413 but he would still feel the weight of the axe tho, even if rory is holding it, the axe still adds weight, so basically itami is carrying the weight of rory + axe, either itami is ridiculously strong or its just a mistake in the animation/script, because later on in the show, someone in modern world literally got his arm injured by attempting to wield rory's axe, there's also a possibility that the axe doesn't weight much itself, its just that some magical power made it that only rory can carry and wield it, that might also explains why itami can carry the weight of that axe while carrying rory, since rory was the one holding it

Just so others are informed, at 0:15 they used hot oil. However, during Medieval times, oil was super expensive, and so they used either hot water or heated sand, since either worked well.

I think the best part about this, is a lot of the ground troops are using outdated weaponry. Their firearms I think were older models given to them to cut down on cost.

Actually, JSDF deliberately sent a small taskforce with outdated weapons because the mission is to find a diplomatic negotiation with the rulers of Alnus. Even characters in anime mention how outdated weapons are being supplied by JSDF.
They had a few other reasons, 1: If they lost their gear and someone from the other side used it, coming back to our world would put them on the hind food because they'd be using outdated gear. 2: It was already established that there were monsters on the other side and the modern 5.56mm ammo used for the up to date rifles is not really good for anything bigger / tougher than a human but an older 7.62mm round is a lot closer to big game hunting ammo and more powerful against bigger targets.
@@Steampoweredgeekery About that 5.56, one of the characters in a John Ringo book (if you aren't familiar look him up) opined that he new the US military was too far gone when they switched from ammo designed to kill the enemy to ammo that merely pisses them off.
@@Fred_Lougee I read some of Ringo's work but 5.56 is really optimized to remove someone from the battlefield not always dead but bad enough that they aren't fighting again for at least weeks if not months. Also battlefield trauma medicine keeps getting better and you can have skull fracturing would and surviving them.

That would apply had the JSDF's enemies ratified and signed the it or any treaties concerning war conduct. The Empire with its allies, vassal states, and surrounding nations are not part of any such agreement and practices atrocities which doesn't entitle them to protections.
Ah yes, the anime that makes fantasy fanboys scream and cry about modern technology being correctly shown having utter supremacy over people with swords and low-mid-grade magic. I heartily approve of this.
I especially love it when the scene of modern military just wiping the dragons out. Dragon hide is tough but it's evolved to stop magic and swords, not an AP rocket
The mage in this show figured hiw to replicate a howitzer later on. They have the tools just not using them. Dragon and mages are hard as fuck and the inmortal loly handled 2 special ops grups like children in a playground.

this is one of the only anime that actually has a decently accurate sound for gunship's cannon. it makes a humming noise affectionately called a brrt.
I love the bullet can penetrate into the medieval shield because that’s considerably accurate to how it works in reality. The shield was made all out of wood and some of the metal materials.
Later they started conscripting ogres with really thick shields, total nightmare for riffle men, lucky a heavy weapons are never too far.

Believe it or not, the V.C. used that same tactic to boobytrap LZ’s in Vietnam according to several veteran helicopter crews!
I'd like to point something out. For those of us who've seen the whole anime, we know that Itami has both Ranger and Special Forces training. The man is a top class soldier in all respects. But there's one little detail I didn't pick up on here the first time I saw it. A bit of context first though. Skipping ahead a few episodes when the gang is in Ginza and trying to shake their pursuers, Rory's axe gets stolen, but the thief is quickly squashed by the weight of the axe, and the "public safety" agent throws out his back trying to pick it up. Keeping that in mind, we see Itami pick up Rory and run with her away from the helicopter gunship at around 4:12. *Note that Rory is still holding her axe,* and Itami is sprinting while carrying both her and the axe. This man, while being a slacker and an otaku, has elite military training and the strength to rival olympic athletes.

Kuribayashi and Rori back to back is probably my favorite scene in the anime.
For all that the guns and explosives are powerful, I love how they repeatedly show the single greatest weapon the modern military has is communication. The ability to coordinate and adapt in real time is easy to underestimate but completely changed how warfare can be carried out.
Not just communication but capacity for quick transport.
At some point the Empire adopts a scorching earth policy to deny IDF resources. Pina is utterly shocked after discovering Japanese forces not just move swiftly in their machines, but can also deploy supplies from the sky.

Sadly it won't get another season. Not because it wasn't popular enough, but becasue the Light Novel's next story arc deals with the GATE mysteriously closing. Leilei then tries to open it back up but accidentally connects to a world with the Xenomorphs from Alien; egss, facehuggers and all. Since Disney owns the right to that franchise, they would sue if it got animated. And they won't allow permission to use it either.

I would love to see that problem arise in the anime where both the empier and the jdsf try and reopen the gate maybe jdsf try and make a new gate just so they don't have to deal with the civilian again when the re open it.
@@mrdriver2988 FYI Leilei eventually reopens the gate back to the Human world but only for a short time. Sadly the Special Region gets invaded by bugs from the Xenomorph realm before then. Go read the light novels.
Yes while it would make a cool season 3, Disney would not allow it. Disney is VERY overprotective of the rights to franchises they own. They would sue A-1 Pictures if they tried to animate this. And it's highly doubtful that they would give permission for them to use it for their own profit unless A-1 Paid a substantial royalty fee.
@@hudsonball4702 I think A1 has to change the story a bit by taking out the zenomorphs and addressing a new problem for the story. Like other nations from out of the empirors contenent coming to see and mybe have nother war but this tike the special region has started the use of gun poweder and stuff and the jdsf has to know try and hide as much information of their wepons to the special region as possible. I consider that Honor in war definitely ended in the First World War, with the use of chemical weapons, and brutality, and the number of deaths it left behind. I overcome any conflict from the past.
Imagine that documentary by Nacional de Geografia, where millions of young people go happily to the slaughterhouse of the 1st World War, thinking of the glory they would obtain as the heroes of yesteryear, but the great minority of them, fortunate to return, were never again. Himself, experiencing the cruelty and vileness of modern warfare, made them realize that in the future. Wars will never have honor and pride as the old men of the past sang.

Realistically once a fort loses air supremacy they will button up. They have no excuse not to know this concept because they have dragons.

If a high tier mage that has wind ability doesn't that disrupt air supperiority but none the less wasting MM shells isn't good but a good way to show power and supremacy over the enemies. Here is the thing though, tanks would need to be able to get in. Which would mean firing shells until either the walls crumble, or they run out of ammo. Now tanks in real life cannot carry very much ammo. Not like in video games at least, so historically whenever tanks where used againced fortified structures the tanks hand supply trucks behind them. This was to make sure they have enough ammo to crack the armor on the fort. That still means more ammo, more ammo means more expensive to replace said ammo, the economy being the number 1 weakness of modern war.
What forts usually do about this is they lay a series of earthwork. Tank traps. Trench warfare. Basically the same shovel work one would use to stop a giant ogre. Set it up right so beyond cannon range is the trench field, beyond that in range and an easy target for defenders. idkoc if these guys can do that but just your basic counter.
Now yes a mage very much could use wind aka the weakness of helicopters. Now in this anima mages and such magic class users conveniently are never around when the JSDF show up unless they side with the JSDF. Reason being the badguys in this show are meant to lose to the JSDF to a point that any survivors latter commit suicide because they can't live with the humiliation. So no need to worry about them.
As for buttoning up when air supremacy is gone the main part of the castle has an entry that is 80ft thick brickwork that goes over 200 ft underground. This is called a stronghold. Its where they are SUPOSE to go when over run. Yet they don't so that Japanese teens can masturbate to this cool helicopter shoot up.

If they have equal air supremacy then it would somewhat end at a stalemate yet a variable you must consider is resources particularly Fuel and Ammunition for if one isn't ready for a battle for attrition then soon one will fall and one will reign supreme. This is just my case want to know your opinion @The Dishonored Coward.

It was explained better in the novel, these people went mad after facing the JSDF, there idea of war is melee combat with plunder and glory. Facing people that fight in their common sense is what war is for them, and as followers of Emroy the Empire denied them war.

What I also like is how the enemies are still competent. They had good tactics, formations, and skills (like using a Testudo or all attacking at once) but of course that is nothing compared to the OP Rory and modern weaponry. But its a nice detail that they weren't just mooks who cant hit anything, they were winning the battle beforehand after all.
My thoughts through out the anime was, “just wait until the us hears this place got oil.”
