i feel like this anime is a giant middle finger to the scenes in other anime where characters bring blades to a gunfight and win
Because it's not plausible irl. A person that is at least decent with a pistol and has background with cqc can kill a guy who's mastered a sword. Unless the situation heavily favors the swordsman i.e. The guy with pistol has yet to draw his weapon and they are in extreme close proximity at the very start of the fight, the guy with the gun will almost always win.

If the pistol had rifle or anti armor rounds like the FN Seven then yeah the guy with the gun will normally win. In WW2 plenty of guys killed marines with spears and swords. But it's not like there was alot of air support back then. So they could get close.

Also munitions armor is not plate armor that's like comparing a leather jerkins to someone in chainmail. Plate armor stops bullets up to .45 cals from a Colt 1911. Assuming you decided to hit the thickest part of the plate. Medieval steel made with the cast method is similar to modern steel. Tempered steel was reserved for kings though. Most of it was shitty munitions armor. Tempered ain't AR500 but it was pretty good.

You have to acknowledge that they are using cobra attack helicopters and Huey´s. Both are cold war technology and not very well armoured. The ballista on the wall fires a heavy spear at a surprisingly high velocity. That would spear and destroy one of those helicopters with relative easy. It is an actual treat to them.

Depends on the helicopter, most use 20mm. Any more is overkill really. Gatling guns can fire at speeds of nearly 7000 rpm. That much firepower can bring anything down anyway.
That is an Bell Helicopter AH-1S Cobra it uses a 20mm rotating barrel chain gun. The Boeing Defense AH-64 Apache uses a single barrel 30mm chain gun.

They wanted an Apocolypse Now reference so badly that this modern, Japanese military decided to stock an entire strike force's worth of Hueys just for the occasion.
I believe that they deployed UH-1s through the gate because they used pre-GPS navigation equipment. A more modern aircraft would rely heavily on assets that they didn’t have on the other side. As for where they got an entire force of Hueys, I have no damn clue.
Side note, this also goes for the F-4 Phantoms.
@@jasonalbert6251 Modern aircraft can still operate without any navaids, in fact the assumption is that GPS would last like 10 minutes into the conflict before satellites are fucked or it's jammed.
A better reason to use UH-1 in environment like this is that its engine will run on anything that burns reasonably well and cleanly. Like vodka for instance.
I think the explanation in the manga was that, since the Gate region was still largely unexplored, they decided to send in less modern and expensive assets. You can see that in the fact that most of the Japanese soldiers are using Howa type 64's instead of more modern rifles. They probably decided that sending in something expendable like A Huey was a better course of action than sending in a more modern and expensive UH-60.

And I remember it was pointed out by one of the characters how there was no honor, pride, or glory involved in this. That to them, you couldn’t call this war, it was just a massacre with no remorse. Each individual soldier isn’t granted time to feel any of the emotions that are present in epic stories, you aren’t even granted that in death. There is nothing honorable about getting mowed down by an absolute force of efficient violence, reduced to a statistic.

This anime is a masterpiece! I was literally squealling and crying tears of joy when I saw the helicopters flying in ready to kick the shit out of the medieval people! But it seriously sucks that out of all the anime and manga i've seen, Gate is the only one that has modern armies blasting the hell out of armies of medieval. If you have any anime or manga that are like this one, please lemme know, I crave for more.
It's a book but still hits that vibe somewhat release that witch is a good alternative for the most part
Search "Zipang", It's a Mordern Atago Class Destoyer travel back to 1942 facing the US Navy and Imperial Japan, it has very accurate history and military depiction. but since the anime is made in early 2000, the resolution is low.

So glad to be among those who love this anime for its references and pretty realistic (for an anime) depiction of what would happen if a modern military (even one focused on defense like the SDF) had to fight a medieval one. Well seeing as how dragons and wyverns are common animal in the special region,I guess ballista's are AA weapons because their use to defend against them
AA means “anti-air” so they aren’t wrong, it COULD take down a heli but you’d need one hell of a shooter.

Yet, even without catching the reference, this scene was still awesome -- and now I'm definitely going to watch the original movie.
