I can imagine the ruler being like "I want a pina colada" and a few days later his soldiers bring him a princess and the ruler is "I wanted a drink!".
You know what funny? In the novel and manga Prince Zorzal claims using armored Ogres are the perfect weapon against the JSDF, only for Pina to remind him that they stopped using such beast decades ago because behemoths such as Ogres have a tendency to often attack their own troops. Also while said ogres became bulletproof against even 50 calibers they become very slow from wearing 20 centimeter thick armor. And lastly it takes only simple one grenade to incapacitate one and any weapon that can give a bigger explosion can instantly kill it.
Cool additions to the lore. I imagine these types of scenarios were removed to simplify the story. It also makes the fights more one-sided and quicker. It would have been cooler to slow the story down to add more depth in the lore; however that's what corporate does to streamline products.
Very much like elephants in real life.
They were originally meant to be used as breakthrough shock cavalry but because elephants scare easily, they had a tendency to trample their own troops.

If you think that I'll tell you this, later in the novel/manga Prince Idiot the Zorzal and his equally egotistical General Herm Fule Maio the Man-child, ordered a massive scorched earth campaign on every town, villages and settlements, to slow down the JSDF advancements...
Let's just say majority of those Pro-War soldiers was more than happy to slaughter countless innocents, rape women, burn every settlement they see and poison every available sources of food and water...
@@trollmaster4523 The scorch earth tactics is not idiotic at all and has worked many times in history, most famously by Russian against Napoleon and Nazi Germany, they just underestimated JSDF's logistic capability. Until very recently in human history, a large portion of army maintenance is spent on keeping the army fed, if supply line is not established or if roads are nonexistent, like in marshes or middle of desert, food would be acquired from locals either by coins or by force. If the empire has Russian winter on their side, the JSDF would end up like Napoleon in his Russian Campaign, all starved and decimated.
But to burn every settlements? This is just overdoing it, probably out of fear of the unstoppable green army.
@@primalforlorn While your correct that Scorched Earth Campaign if done correctly if can hinder and weaken the opposing enemies, too bad Zorzal and Herm absolutely failed in using such tactics, why here's a few examples in the novel:
1. Those Pro-War fools destroyed sources of food and water, said resources was not needed for the JSDF advancements...
2. Said tactics caused a food shortage not only for the victims but for Zorzal's forces as well, before the battle in Marais, the food in the middle of the Pro-War senators are all over ripe, the only reason no one mentioned that is everyone is distracted by Zorzal's lies about the war that they are winning whom those idiots believe...
3. It was easy for the villagers and other people to know it was Zorzal's forces who did those vile deeds because Pro-war senators like Herm Fule Maio the Man-child General is dressed in Empire's attire while commanding the atrocities in person...
4. And this is the nail in the coffin, after the JSDF launched a Blitzkrieg Offensive the Pro-War soldiers who flee from battle are often ambushed by the victims of the Scorched Earth Campaign thus leading for the complete decimation of Zorzal's forces...
Look I get it, such tactics are made to deny resources, hinder advancements and weaken the enemy but Zorzal's brutal tactics only caused the citizens to utterly despise him but the Empire in whole.

From just your description of General Herm Fule Maio alone, I thought he was at least cunning enough to hire bandits or barbarians to commit the atrocities and deny any claims of him being in charge. But after reading what you just write, I have a feeling that the author intentionally write the empire to be governed by a bunch of idiots that can somehow conquer the continent and not destroying themselves in civil wars in the process.

Plus the Imperials were Romans who were the most technically advanced compared to the other cultures except for the magic users.

Lelei is downright scary in her combining her analytical ability with her magic. She assesses what the JSDF does in terms of tactics and weapons and then figures out how to apply that to her magic.
Note to self: NEVER let Lelei study the capabilities and effects of Nukes!!

And then freed unscathed by itami and that dark elf.

I love everything about this anime. But i noticed something that so rubs me the wrong way. All the gates and massive doors open inwards. In real fortresses, THEY OPEN OUT
How would they fortify and barricades the gate/door if it swings out?
@@wookim7287 by putting a bar on the inside. Enemies aren’t able to pull a closed gate. They would have to push. And if it isn’t meant to open inwards, it makes ramming it all that much harder
The only time I’ve seen a TV gate pulled outwards is HBO Vikings during the siege of Paris. The handful of real castles I’ve visited open inwards.
Most gates open inwards to prevent enemy tampering with the hinges. An exposed edge can be pryed apart. You hook the edge and rip it off.
You can also wedge the door to keep it closed if it opens inward.
Blast doors on the other hand open outwards. In the event of an explosion the door is pushed against the entire frame rather than just hinges and bolts. They are made of steel and concrete not wood and iron. The downside is they can be blocked by debris, thereby trapping those inside whereas an inwards door would allow the occupants to dig their way out.

Aside from the heavy targets, all of the hostiles could have been defeated with a few LMGs and lots of ammo boxes, at least until they realize the folly of sending _testudo_ formations and World War 1 style cavalry charges at a machine gunner.
If they were up against 19th century militaries (cannons, massed musket formations), the odds would be more even. That's how much of a game-changer the Maxim machine gun was, and every automatic weapon that derives from it.

No, ACTUAL funnels, like the ones you use to funnel liquids like oil for the kitchen.
In Lelei's case she uses them to focus the channeled air or magic energy for a more efficient attack with less mana usage.

In the manga his strategy is more detailed and actually became a considerable threat.
Believe it or not the 20 centimeter thick armor is completely bulletproof, even stopping 50 caliber bullets. Too bad it also made them stupidly slow.

If Hollywood where to adapt this, they'd somehow make it where a fight between modern soldiers vs medieval age soldiers a somewhat "even" fight for the sake of not offending folks.
The author basically handicapped the empire in terms of worldbuilding but something like Gate: war of two worlds(fanfic) would be fun to watch.
At a certain point, how does the empire motivate its soldiers to fight?
At the first chapters of the novel/ manga it was said that the Empire and it's soldiers have a belief that they are absolutely invincible and the strongest in all dimensions thus everything they do is justified. The belief is because the Empire is 600 years undefeated in its own country.
This belief was shattered when they faced the JSDF, too bad for them Zorzal and a lot of similarly minded fools like him remains adamant that the Empire is Invincible. Blaming that the soldiers aren't brave enough and the Emperor, Pina and the Pro-Peace senators are cowards.
When Prince Idiot the Zorzal took the throne, he have a fanatical and absolutely moronic group called the Oprichina to motivate their troops by all sorts of crazy stuffs to inspire them.
Crazy drills like Killing any soldiers (leading to thousands of their own soldiers to be killed before battle), so they will always charge in human wave meele attacks, shooting arrows at the backs of their own men to inspire them to run faster towards the JSDF and even napalm flames, and preventing any sorts of retreat whatsoever with threatening said soldiers with torture.

As great as this anime is the manga is 100x better. This scene is so much more bad ass as well.

Conqueroring is fun and all, but then you've gotta figure out what to do with all the shit you've conquered and all the problems of your new people. Are you going genocide and repopulate? Hearts and minds to create a utopia? Warlord/demonlord slave empire of opulence? Plus if you conquer evryone, then there is no one left to fight and it gets boring. Also, it is important to maintain an external threat of some sort in order to have something to unify the people against, direct discontent towards, and as an excuse to restrain the nobility who may be disloyal.
I've put way more thought into this than i should, but i also read a ton and enjoy the logistical side. "How a realist hero rebuilt the kingdom" is a great book series, and "A Connecticut yankee in king Arthur's court" is a classic.

My understanding is that the common misunderstanding was that it was just some sort of strange magical beast. These guards would be expected to charge giant worms, boars, dragons, and other assorted monsters so why would this be different aside from simply not recognizing it.

These are professional soldiers raised in a world with monsters and dragons as a fact of life, so expect that they were prepared for some fantastical shit. They just weren't expecting something mundane like a device that uses chemical reactions to launch slivers of metal at ridiculous speeds.

In the manga lelei ( the mage in the show) uses a funnel in his magic spell to create a munroe effect to have armor piercing capabilities..
