  • DIY inspiration of a simple dishing tool designed for 28/29 inch wheels made from scrap and leftover material. I have used a few power tools to speed up the build process, but is possible to make a more simplistic version using just a handsaw and drill.

    Beautifully done, bravo!

Looks straightforward enough....now I've just gotta spent 500 odd quid on all the tools needed to make that.

:-) - just like in the description, tools makes it easier, but this is just an inspiration, and you can make it just using a hand saw and a drill, all the best!

great work. just one thing, you need to make sure that that piece of wood is perfectly straight right?

You are 100% correct, however even if the wood is not completely straight, it will result in the same measurement error from both sides of the wheel which makes it negligible and acceptable.

@@custombikefactory hehe, that's true! I'm thinking about using a clothes hanger...the design is similar

Yes, i just realized after suggesting. I made a very simple version with some scrap stuff I had at home...it did the job

I have seen videos of people building wheels, and due to the sprocket(s), back wheels can be out of dish, and still be correct.
But as the second wheel had a dish break, it was in dish.
🤷 I don't know much about these things so...

Yes, there are some cases where wheels can be out of dish - for example Cannondale is doing so because of their asymmetric frame design, but majority of wheels should be even. My tool is able to accept adapters which I present in the end, which can be used to measure uneven dish for bikes such as Cannondale or custom need.
