    Thank you Voja, always a pleasure to watch for me as well. I just bought a Boox Max Lumi second hand thanks to your advice... I got tired of waiting for a Supernote A4x2!
    I have been following Voja for 2 years now, I will do his tutorials and purchase the MDO finally!

    Dear Voja,
    I do have to confess: As much as I like the actual content of your videos and the way you deliver all this information concisely, these are also very entertaining because every once in a while a dry remark or some hidden joke pops up, and the production quality (esp. the sound) is top notch.
    Thank you!

    I bought the Boox Tab Ultra last week. The device is marketed as a Tablet PC, though it performs more like a tablet, tbough with a slightly slower speed, typical of e-readers today. I am a student and I use it for watching study lectures, reading anf taking pdfs. The different refresh rates really gave me good experience of performing different tasks on the device. There are some cons, such as its battery doesn't last too long, yet it doesn't drain quickly too. I recommend this product for students. 🎉🎉

      I found Boox's battery a total garbage. It died after 3 years, so rather disappointing, especially considering its price. I contacted them and hope that the problem will be sorted.

    Hey Voja. Again, really enjoyed this roundup. I'm curious: do you or have you used an iPad Pro with pencil much in the past? Have you tried it more recently with some of the paperlike screen covers you can get? While I've been pulled into the eInk world (SN A5X and the other suspects... and I'm also curious how the A6X2 and A5X2 pan out... not to mention A4X... and I still have a Boox TUPC, but leaning toward returning it), I've also recently re-discovered the joy of writing/illustrating on my iPad Pro--especially with the new Astropad Rock Paper Pencil screen cover and pencil tip combo. I'd be curious to see you take a look at the latest ipad options like this... unless of course you've sworn off iPads.

    Your videos are always the gold standard for comprehensive e-ink reviews and information.
    My use case is very simple. I need to be able to use Google Workspace apps outdoors in the bright sunlight. I need internet connectivity because I want my documents to sync in real time. I need portability and good battery life. The original Boox Note Air has met my needs quite well. I tether it to my 5G smartphone for internet access (my local public WiFi is slow and unreliable). I create and do most of my writing on my laptop at home and take the Note Air outdoors where I need it.
    I am quite tempted by the color versions of e-ink devices. However, I will be a fence sitter for these until price and battery life improve. I think my Note Air will have to chug on for a few more years.

    Thank you for your thoughtful review, appreciated your breakdown of categories which is spot on and does help in deciding which device meets your needs. In respect of mobiscribe wave thought your comments were correct, always thought that two other positives for this device i.e it being water proof and having a front light. Which if you were working out doors on a regular basis a definite plus, but not features that seem to be mentioned much. Just wondering if I was missing something in comparison to other devices?

    I have just discovered this channel and I appreciate the in-depth discussions. I have used e-readers for many years, mainly for reading research and scientific PDFs. With a larger reader you can just about get away without text reflow but for a smaller one it's essential. The Kobo H20 is a great little reader but the PDF reading is pretty awful, like most small e-readers. So I installed Koreader and that gives great reflow and reading, although very primitive in other ways. My Kobo is finally dying (battery I suspect) and things have moved on a lot since then. Now there is colour which is very useful for research documents, and note taking/markup/export has become sophisticated. My question is: which modern e-readers have the best native PDF reflow i.e. without having to install Koreader? If there is a video on this then it would be great to see a link. Thanks.

    Great Video Voja! I really appreciate the comprehensive details and the subjective view points. I like that you have evaluated each device for various use cases. Your content, along with Brandon and Kit’s, has helped me apply this technology to multiple use cases in my career and personal life and I feel better for it. I am now aware of how I was consuming so much and contributing to e-waste and harming the environment as well. I now use my technology more intentionally and I am looking at what I purchase in a more sustainable way. I now want my use of technology to benefit the environment not just to be purely for my enjoyment. Thank you for your effort, your time, your data, and your professional discernment. I can’t wait for your next installment of content. See you in the Cyberverse! P.S. We need more ways to support you. I can only buy the MDO so many times!

    I am looking to get my daughter an e-ink note taking device. She is a clinical psychologist so it will be used mostly for note-taking. You mentioned at the end a special mention for the paper like feel for a device. Which other of the top choices do you think gives you that similar quality? Also, she is left handed so if there is one that you think stands out for that experience please let me know. Really liked your video, just subscribed to it.

      Also, its second hand value wont drop while voya keeps ranking it so high! Not that I disagree...
      I have one, and a brand new na3c. I can testify the new device makes a lot of sense... but the ml is still there! No match for pdf readability.
      What i disagree is ranking those as do it all devices. To me right now, it is Na3c's crown, ML beeing king of the 13 inch niche.

    I like old color nooks for reading as I am a technical person and many technical books and papers use color for data display. I recently purchased the Boox Note 3 C as it supports a great number of formats, can install Nook, Kobo and Kindle apps from the Google Play store and has color. I am also looking forward to the note taking and drawing capabilities for work.

    hi Voya,
    I found this type of technology, E-Ink, interesting. I think that an important topic would be the evolution of each brand in order to see where there is a turning point that makes the tablet have an analysis.
    I would also like to know if Remarkable 3 will be released in 2024. I ask because they have all evolved in a year but they are stagnant, they have only generated software changes but not hardware, which will lead them to be differentiators because in design they are already superiors, you just need to listen to the comments that you test consumer specialists make.

    Hi Voja.
    Do you think the battery life on TUC Pro or NA3C could be improved via some software updates? Maybe in implementing option to turn off BSR or do levels of usage of that technology and overall improvement of power efficiency?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 6 měsíci +2

      That is something that would make perfect sense, for example, a future update that makes it so that the HD refresh mode bypasses the BSR gpu completely. However, this is such an obvious thing, that I fear that the case may be that the way they implemented the BSR GPU is basically non-bypassable, otherwise, surely they would have done it by now. So yeah, I 'd hope that it is possible, but the fact that we're not seeing it happen for a year now makes me think that it might be the latter case.

    Thank you very much Voja. I've watched so many of your videos over the years and have even worked at an e paper startup. This video answered the question I needed around which reader to get for going through academic textbook pdfs and to take more effective meeting notes. Now the questions is whether I get the note air 3 or the air 3c . . .
    Is the air 3 going to have insaneley good battery life comparatively because it's not doing color, so won't need so much light, and won't have to change the state of so many capsules?
    And, will the screen be much, much clearer, because it's only 227 PPI, is it going to be less definition than the c?
    I don't expect you to see the comment, but oh man would I appreciate a video on this, or even a comment in response.
    Either way, I'm such a big fan and am so grateful for your thorough, careful, considered, methodical approach to this whole industry. You've made it so much easier for me to navigate. Thank you.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thank you for watching and for the support :)
      You should see a very similar battery life like on the NA2 and NA2+ because the NA3C doesn't have BSR tech in it, meaning excellent battery life, but no BSR ghosting clean-up goodness and smoothness. Also, NA3C has 300 PPI in B&W content, and yes, when comparing a 300 to a 227 PPI display, side by side, you will notice a difference, but the NA3C is monochromatic, which means a lot better brightness and contrast, because of brighter brights on the device.
      I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but on paper it seems like the modernized version of the NA2+, and that was and still is an excellent device in it's own right.

    I would like to see also a catogory for "drawing".
    One more question: why you considered the Mobiscribe Wave BW and not the colour version?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Because the Wave is a good device pretty much for writing, as a portable notepad, and color is really not necessary for such use. In that sense, the inherent negatives of the Kaleido 3 panels (darkness of the "white", fuzziness of the color matrix, and the need for stronger front light use) are completely unjustified, and it's more expensive. So, you'd be basically getting an inferior product for more money.

    Dear Voja, thank you for the video, very informative. I have a question hovewer😅. I noticed a telecaster and 2 basses hanging on the wall behind you. I suppose those are yours and you play them. So the question is: have you sight read with an e-ink devise? How was your experience? Which device would you recommend for a musician (me) whose main task with a device will be sight reading and note taking. Of course it would be perfect to have a capability for notating music, but on the other hand I don’t want to spend a fortune on that device, so I could probably go without that option. Also what screen diameter would you recommend? Is 10.3 enough for reading sheet music or is it better to look towards 13 inch? Reading your opinion would be very valuable. I’d be thankful for your reply. Have a great day)

    Great reviews of the various categories. Thank-you. One day, I'd really like to get hold of a fully functioning e-ink laptop or tablet that could sync with a PC or Mac. For me, reduced eye strain is paramount , so I'd dearly love to spend the vast majority of my time looking at an e-ink display, but with the ability to dovetail to a PC or Mac for those (fairly rare) occasions when I need to engage with other people.

    Thanks for your reviews, truly the best ones on eink devices!. I have a question for you that would be awesome if you could talk about it (You may talk about this topic in the past, but I'm not able to find where) that is the privacy protection of the notes that we take on Boox devices. I have the Note Air 1, and it is mandatory to accept sharing the notes with their cloud, which to be honest I'm not very confortable about it. Do you know if there is any other option of similar Android tablet that does not gather note data?.
    Many thanks!

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 5 měsíci

      Well obviously, if you are going to synchronize your notebooks to the Boox Cloud server and use their Push2Boox services, you have to let them transfer your notes to their server, as that is what you are using? I don't understand what are you confused about? Cloud storage is a fancy word for storage servers, nothing more.
      You can always choose to not use any kind of clue synchronization or Google Drive, or Dropbox, or One Drive...

  • @joytobake
    @joytobake Před 6 měsíci +6

    Thank you, Voja! I so appreciate your work and attention to detail.
    I do have a use case that would really appreciate your attention. You say “notetaking” but I’m not sure what specific features that includes. I would like to use an e-ink device as a Knowledge Management System (KMS). Not by using an app such as Obsidian or Notion, but using the device itself and the software features they have built in. (I love the idea of Obsidian, but 9 times out of 10, when I want to enter information, I’m in a situation where I can write, but not type.)
    The specific features I would want included:
    1. Good handwriting recognition/conversion
    2. create links between files,
    3. tags
    4. the ability to search the entire device by for multiple things ie. 3 tags, and 2 words used together but not as an exact phrase.
    5. Ability to input searchable, editable text from another device - if I’m reading an article online and taking notes on a computer, I would like to be able to transfer notes and quotes into the device without having to retype/write it all.
    6. the ability to access my notes from a computer and export something with working links that I could send to a friend without a similar device.
    7. Bonus feature - the ability to convert some handwriting to text but leave some elements such as diagrams/drawings untouched.
    These features are incredibly important to whether the device can truly function as a KMS and I would really appreciate it if you could spend some time showing them in detail. I’ve found a lot of things work as generalizations, but the things I would assume work as an Android user suddenly aren’t possible on e-ink devices. (Such as the ability to paste text from an email into a note) I really would like to move to e-ink but… it’s hard to find the answers I need.
    I’m leaning heavily toward Supernote, but, as they continually change their software, it is very difficult to get a picture of the current capabilities and shortcomings. I am unsure if (4) the search can include multiple parameters such as in the example above. I am also unsure (5) if I would be able to add any text from another device into a useable, editable, taggable… section of the device without re-writing everything? And I really can’t figure out whether it is capable of the (7) bonus feature listed. Do any other devices fit this user profile?
    I want to replace all of my paper notebooks in a way that makes their information findable and usable. Overall, I don’t really care if the final product is in handwriting or text; I just need to input it via handwriting.
    Thank you so much again for all that you do, Voja! Your videos are a huge reason why I want to make the switch to e-ink. I hope you have an amazing holiday season!

    Oh the paradox of choice, its paralyzing. Here's an idea for a video- if one were a student in college, (maybe a fine arts major, and another a civil engineering major) and could pick two E readers per person, (given the wide selection of used and cheaper options now). Which 2 would pair up well together instead of relying on just one E reader? Longer battery life being the only requirement

    I would like to know if one can use the color e-ink screen without turning on the backlight. The primary reason I am considering these devices is to minimize the computer monitor screen time. Asking this because I have severe eye strain problem and neither Boox Tab Ultra or Air Note 2/plus is available for purchase (sold out).

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 6 měsíci +4

      Yes you can, but only in very good lighting conditions. For example, I use my NA3C without the front light on a nice day if I am in a well lit room. However, if it is a cloudy day, and you're far away from a window, you will want to use the front light.
      One thing to be aware of, front lights on these devices are not flickering, and are a reflected light, so it's a very different story than a backlight on a traditional display.

    I love to see "lost & forgotten" devices besides Supernote, Boox and Remarkable brands (and kindle maybe?). Huawei Matepad paper was a good choice if I would be in Huawei ecosystem and Mobiscribe Wave is a good device somewhat similar to Kindle Scribe in that it has lower price than competition.

      Nova Air 2 doesn't have the paperlike film on the screen, thus making it less pleasant for writing and considerably worse at handling glare and reflections. @MyDeepGuide  Před 6 měsíci +4

      @lnee051
      Yes, it can do that, but you will run into limitations and sometimes synchronization frustrations with the Remarkable, as their services are somewhat unreliable (mainly the reliability of the synchronization with the cloud account). Also, take care of it, as it is a very fragile device.

    • @siorgathering5040
      @siorgathering5040 Před 5 měsíci +5

      @lnee051 @MyDeepguide I have been a remarkable user since the launch of v. 1 and, though I have experienced occasional sync problems (mainly when the sync protocol changed and with some bugs in specific betas/releases), all these years have been mostly uneventful in this regard. I do not worry about sync because it just works.
      Regarding fragility, it's true that you should have some care about it falling on the power button or the screen. I've had it fall twice but the protective cover and bag have been sufficient protection. I would not qualify it as VERY fragile.
      Remarkable lacks features compared to supernote (and in some respects to boox), but depending on the user, like me, I find that as overcomplication getting in the way of something that I want to be almost as straightforward as paper writing.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm a technical guy with 30 years working as a computer professional: developer, admin, you name it. But I keep the complex processes of formatting and long term information classification to the PCs/iPads/Tablets, that is not what I want in my note taker. I believe that is what keeps people like me choosing the reMarkable over other brands, though being conscious of the additional options they offer. But, for example, I would never want a full Android ecosystem and all the app store options in my thinking tool.
      That said I deeply respect and appreciate @MyDeepGuide 's thorough and impartial reviews, and I come to it to have a very insightful perspective on new devices... though it seems to miss the appeal that rM has for many in its userbase.

      I think for many of the use cases people often mention here, a Mac Book Air, for example, would be a much better and more versatile choice. An e-ink device will never replace a laptop, it is always a compromise. The strength of e-ink devices lies in taking (handwritten) notes and reading documents and books - not surfing the Internet, not email, not CZcams, etc. In my opinion, it is a big mistake for manufacturers to deviate from this focus and turn an e-ink tablet into an "ipad". A sports car is not an SUV and never will be - it just doesn't make sense.

      I may have a similar use case as I edit and proofread scientific papers and books professionally in the field of Semitic Studies, Oriental Studies, Islamic Theology, and such.
      Although I have installed GBoard and sometimes switch between languages, the diacritical glyphs outside of the most used and "normal" ones (no matter whether it is Hebrew or Arabic, ... or a transliteration system like DMG/IJMES) are often not accessible once you reach "accent land" or want to use ligatures. (On my laptop I use a system of keyboard shortcuts to insert Unicode characters, but these are working for MS Word only and get their use for transliteration of Ethiopic or other languages where glyphs need to be distinguished by dots underneath etc.)
      A workaround may be just write away as best as possible and leave marks for cleanup that otherwise do not occur, like #xy, then search for # and edit once you have access to a proper computer.
      ---> It is possible to do basic stuff on the Tab X and type and write in so many languages that scrolling the GBoard language list to add new keyboard layouts gets tedious for how long it is (Hebrew and Greek being among those at the veeeery end), but the Tab X (at least for me) cannot replace a computer for such use cases, just accompany it.

    Let’s face it, if one marks up a document via highlighting … clearly this is relevant to the reader. Is there a device that can index search and convert to text so that in the end one has a summarized version of the document they have read and highlighted. Basically being able to condense a chapter to only the most relevant info and then having the ability to search for it afterwards for review???

      The platform that can get closest to what you are describing is any Boox device with the default NeoReader app. Check their user manual for more details if you are interested, or some of my earlier "in-depth and guide" videos, such as Note Air 1, or even older, Nova 2, Max 3...

      You just named all Boox hybrid type devices which isnt for everyone, can be a distraction, & the battery is a disappointment for an e-ink device. I own a Note Air3C, but have used the Remarkable & really enjoy the no distraction, size of it, & app sync. I also have a Kindle scribe. It has the best screen & Kindle function by far, but the notes software needs work.

      Depends for what, but as a blanket statement for an overall device for any purpose, no, it really isn't. It's very good at several things, but it isn't the best at any of them.

    I had the reMarkable and it was terrible! It has no palm sensor so you will lose you work by accident. It lags, it is subscription based, it cannot sketch correctly and it definitely cannot add to your calendar for reminders and has no external option for additional memory. After 4 days of use and continued lag and loss of data and document markup the reMarkable was just terrible. For the price of nearly 1K I expect more. Simply said It was so terribly frustrating to use it was returned. When I think of the reMarkable now I will classify it as a 2023 an adult etch a sketch without the sketch.

      I'm not a Remarkable fan, but this sounds like you really didn't do any proper research on the device before you purchased it.

      @@MyDeepGuide actually I did lot's of research. Looking at CZcams reviews, Facebook, everything I could find. There are not to many negative reviews on the device as they seem to be missing or lacking real content. If I only wanted to take notes and do nothing else then this would be a perfectly expensive device for that. I want something that can script to text, calendar, text to type and be able to record meetings all the while taking notes at the same time. The remarkable is what was available everything else is out of stock. However I have found that the Samsung Notes and tablets do all of this. With the links to email write on PDF, doodles, script, palm sensitivity, color, it's everything and integrated to my PC. Just as your review never touched on palm sensitivity neither has any other review. You will never know how you will like a device until you purchase it and use it. The remarkable is a mediocre device that is limited even with the subscription service that is required. The device price point is a little over $1,000.00 and for that target point I expect more. Thankfully it was returned and so was my money.

    • @MyDeepGuide

      Hm. What kind of research did you do if you were surprised that it "lags", has a subscription model, can't integrate with external calendars, and has non-expandable storage? The last two clearly show that you probably didn't even read the specifications sheet, did you? Otherwise, you would clearly have seen that this is not an app based device, that it has a subscription, and that it doesn't have expandable storage. So quite a lot of the stuff you are complaining about is actually on you not doing proper research. Watching videos does not equal research, btw. Research is focused gathering of information that you don't have, but are interested in. This can be done by watching videos, but the key here is the focus in filling up the missing pieces of the puzzle, so that you are actually informed about the product you are interested in purchasing.
      The only reason why I am saying this, is to help you not repeat the same mistake with other devices, to avoid disappoinment and manage expectations.

    The color e reader in the book note 3 C is really really bad! I am surprised I m not hearing it here. Am I doing something wrong? When I read a medical textbook or article, on the kindle app or the vital source app, the tables are extremely hard to decipher and any color picture is like a big blob. Same table and the picture is extremely legible on the kindle scribe in black and white.
    I sent the boox note air 3 c back today. I had purchased it as I was tempted by the color but it is making things worse. I assume the tab ultra C pro would be similar.
    If someone wants a great e reader and a good note taker, there is nothing better than the scribe. Maybe the Note 2 or X. All this hype about android ecosystem I don't understand. The e ink reader is not good enough for Netflix etc, that you can access it is not meaningful in anyway. The ultra C pro is by no means a laptop substitute. My 2 cents.

      Sounds like you didn't take the time to check the user manual and adjust the options in the NeoReader so that you can get the best image results for your specific document. You will be very hard pressed to find a better, more versatile and more capable reader than the NeoReader on Boox devices.
      And no, these devices are not meant for video streaming and watching.

      Do yourself the favour and take some time to tinker around with the settings in the Neo Reader. It is amazing how much the appearance of documents can be improved by making the glyphs darker/stronger, switch on anti-aliasing, or select other optimization functions.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  Před 6 měsíci +1

      In the case that you are not using the NeoReader, then you really want to learn how to optimize 3rd party apps, as Boox devices have excellent options to optimize the display quality for different apps, and you can really fine tune it nicely. But then again, you already returned it before actually learning how to use it so, maybe this is a mute point, but it might help someone else who is in a similar situation.
