    The Remarkable and similar devices are made for a single or maybe 2 purposes: 1. Taking notes and 2. Reviewing documents. The reason that it does not support audio, video or installing of apps is that You do not want to be disturbed by music, pop ups and other annoying things. Backlight is also not supported as it will have a drain on the battery. I think that many users are returning it as they were expecting an all purpose device which it is not. I am buying it as i need to take notes for my work and i hate paper that gets all curled up and lost :-)

    Thanks, the video did indeed help feel me better about the reMarkable I just bought (20 minutes ago). I was starting to have second thoughts. But, I don't use kindle books so you actually gave me an extra pro to get the reMarkable. It is indeed expensive which stopped me for a long time from getting it. I'll admit though, I'm disappointed they have no backlight. So I guess I won't take notes in the dark and I'll be keeping my kobo reader as well for nighttime reading.

      Thank you for your comment! I'm glad to hear the video was helpful and helped you feel better about your purchase. That lack of backlight is a disappointment for many, including myself. It seems keeping your Kobo reader for nighttime use will be a good complement to your reMarkable for now. I’d love to know how you get on with it. Happy note-taking!

    I appreciate this video because I have been curious about the Remarkable but in my ignorance remained skeptical about its value to me, but watching this video clued me in on the Kindle Oasis and Scribe; that they may very well be the device I am looking for. I am heading over to your other video concerning these devices. I have had a Kindle Paperwhite for a number of years and have read extensively from these readers. Thanks for posting the video.

    Really helpful, thank you. As an older person who writes a lot I'm looking for something to avoid more note books and diaries. Something simple for people not very PC savvy. Unfortunately I am not in love with Amazon, or the Kindle. I prefer the Kobo for an ebook. Carrying two devices would be fine. Did not know about the yearly cloud subscription. Back to the drawing board!

    Hi Mark! Thanks for the review. I bought a ReMarkable2 for my wife for Christmas and I own a Kindle Scribe (which is how I came across your channel) so I'll get to compare them side by side. I'm not much of a note-taker, having bought the Scribe mainly to have a large e-reader screen. I agree that the Remarkable2's lack of a backlight would tip the scales in Kindle's favour.

    I have watched sooo many reviews for these Eink tablets. And it basically comes down to personal use-case and what you want the device for.
    To add a backlight to the Remarkable requires an extra screen layer, which takes the pen tip further away from the writing surface.
    The main point of the Remarkable is the pen-on-paper feel. So adding a backlight would prevent that.
    And as you said, for those who already journal or write on note pads, the lack of a backlight should be no issue. Just buy a clip-on book light.
    I have also seen the argument of buying an Onyx Boox because they want all the fancy features, but that just seems weird to me; just buy an iPad. 🤷‍♂️
    For me personally, I love journaling, goal setting, and ideation, and have a copious amount of note pads and paper scraps in cupboards and drawers, so I’ll be buying the Remarkable.
    I lucky enough to already own a Kindle, and an iPad. So I just want a device that I can grab and scribble in that feels like a notepad, but syncs to my Google Drive.

    • @mark_kelly
      @mark_kelly  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hey Jamie. Appreciate you taking the time to comment! Of course, you’re absolutely right, use whatever device fits your use-case for it, as simple as that isn’t it? We all have our differing thoughts on things but folks ultimately should get what works for them. I hope, however, my little offering helps in that decision making process.
      I take your point about the LEDs adding an extra layer, but I honestly can say I didn’t notice it. Amazon have done such a good job with the Scribe I didn’t register a difference between the reMarkable and the Scribe when looking at them both and it certainly doesn’t affect my writing experience.
      I also take your point regarding the Boox. I personally don’t want all that distraction (I too have an iPad for that), but some folks in the comments really want it to be the be all and end all - but again, each to their own and I respect their power of being able to resist distractions!
      What Kindle model do you own and what do you love about it the most?
      Happy New Year! 🤩

      Hi Mark
      Yeah, I think you did a good review, and had some valid points.
      I have a Kindle Paperwhite. I’m a vivacious reader and get through a sci-fi or fantasy novel every couple of weeks. I like to be able to just download a book at the touch of a button, wherever I am.
      I’ve been known to download a book whilst on a train or even in a queue.
      Easy to hold with one hand, lightweight and not having to attempt to hold open or turn pages. (Lazy, I know 😂)
      The only physical books I have and read are non-fiction. I like to take notes on post-its and stick them in certain pages, and many of my non-fiction have graphs, charts, photos or various visual stimuli which just don’t work as well on a Kindle. And with non-fiction I tend to flip back and fourth through different pages to refer back to.

    Nice video! As you are invested in the Kindle ecosystem I guess your choice was quite easy lol
    I've actually got a Kindle Scribe and, as much as it is a lovely device, it still falls a bit short on features, I hated having to load PDFs via Send to Kindle and (my deal breaker) exported notes and PDFs had terrible scribble quality. Right now I'm trying a Note Air 2 Plus and it has a similar writing experience, great features but it feels much less refined.

My wife bought a sound-book but was not able to listen to it!? My future reader should not have such a problem. The book has to arrive easily to the reader and "Play" by a press of a button! Which is better, using paper and traditional writing in paper Or use electronic writing such as devices E-ink tablet to taking note and wiriting, I am confused and I do not know what to choose, but I feel that the old traditional writing is better What advice can you give me based on your experience ?

    • @mark_kelly
      @mark_kelly  Před 3 měsíci

      That’s a great question and honestly, it’s a tough choice! Both traditional paper writing and electronic note-taking with devices like E-ink tablets have their unique advantages. Traditional writing can feel more personal and tactile, while electronic writing offers convenience and easy organization. In my experience, it really depends on your personal preference and workflow. If you enjoy the feel of pen on paper and don’t mind organizing physical notes, traditional writing could be more satisfying for you. On the other hand, if you value having all your notes searchable and in one place, an E-ink tablet might be the way to go. Have you tried both methods to see which feels more natural to you?

    Lately I was at nothing to buy one reMarkable, as a student it seemed a big option BUT for the big price, it can't be true that you also have to buy the cloud syncing because come with only 8g (the storage could be better) and also because for the same price you can even buy a nice ipad, so what's the point be minimalist and zero distractions, for 200 probably I could buy it, but right know , for me even with the high tecnology paper-feeling and all that stuff its not worth it, maybe with the reMarkable 3 they improve all the things (backlight option) and better storage... I hope.
