- Un año más, Mark Knopfler visita nuestra país presentando su nuevo disco Tracker, y como no, nos deleita con su guitarra Pensa, y el mítico Telegraph Road. I had the pleasure of being one of 3semi truck drivers taking mark around Australia on his shangrala tour …. I sat backstage every concert and closed my eyes just listening to an utter gentleman guitarist he is …
He is a musical genius. I am a 74 yo totally disabled Vietnam vet and his "Brother in Arms" was a God send to me. And all I can say is THANK YOU! It comes from my heart.
I was amazed too
I am 41 and just discovered this genius musician. I can be a nostalgic person especially with the passing of my mother in 2021. When the light goes off all we have left are relationships hopefully God first, family and friends. Cherish the good time and enjoy life, it is a blessing after all…Thank you Mark!!!

Somebody else said "Mark Knopfler should be knighted" for his contribution to music and entertainment. Could not agree more. Sir Mark Knopfler. Fitting recognition for a lifetime dedication to his craft.
i check his wiki page, he's already OBE isn't he?
Sweet soul food🎉
Shame that he hasn't received the title long time ago.
I think/hope he’s the kind of guy cool enough to politely decline one of those meaningless gongs
@@nalendro_agung Yes, and well deserved!
One of those things in life that the older it gets, the better it gets
Indeed ❤❤❤
I grew up one block off of Telegraph Rd
I once lived on Telegraph Hill London S.E.14 🎉❤😂😊😎
Am I the only 17 year old that just loves to watch mark knopfler play?
❤❤
Mais non... vous avez du goût et de l'oreille
I'm 44 years old and just now finding this song. What a beautiful song!
One of my favourite songs and I’ve been on the planet for 60 years.
The important thing is that you found it!!!
@@seanpaulanthony5917 that is a fact!
Dig in my friend. In Dire Straits and Mark as a solo artist you will find some of the greatest music you'll ever want to hear, whatever your mood.
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour are the twin peaks of guitarists
💕💕💕
Would add EC and Pat Metheny to this configuration 😊

2 of the best….
Love this song! ❤️😎
There is only one Telegraph Road. And only one Mark Knopfler. He walks with the finest guitarists on this planet.
I was privileged to meet him once in Eindhoven, NL. In a bar in the hotel, I missed the concert. Dire Straits walked in and I almost fell off my seat. I bought them several beers and stayed with them for a little while. It was amazing.
He’s one of the finest song writers and a fine man. I had a blast. The next night, I went to the show. Great concert!!
Great story, you never what life will bring... totally turned a negative into a positive. Thanks for sharing :)
I think him and Jimmy Page (the only I think who comes close) lead the others.
I'm 72, with not long to go due to ill health. This lad just brought me to tears! Lovely memories of Dire Straits in Sydney in the 80's
Me too. God be with you...From another old dude.
stay strong, smile, laugh , exercise !!!!
I wish you the best for the time you have left here, and for your journey into whatever is next.
I was there too... the band pretty much had a residency at the Empty Container Centre, playing 16 consecutive (!) nights in March 1986 and another 4 in April. I remember the music being virtually identical to the studio recording.
Hang in there, BlindPete. Cherish the memories.
Soak it all up Pete ..... let your life force lead.
When I was a teenager your music made me weep. And now that I’m pushing six decades, the beauty of your music is still making me cry. Thank you for being there with me all this time.
You're welcome!
Same . 🎼🎶

Mark Knopfler has created the music of my dreams. He's simply the best.
When I die, I want his music played at my funeral as my last goodbye.
Thank you, Mark, for the enormous joy your music has given me.
I am 60 years old with good health, and this lead me into hypnosis and tears as well. Thank you very much MK.
Stunning performance. On Every Street tour 1992, in person, I was overjoyed next to my handicapped young lady friend in a wheelchair in the Tacoma Dome. Before then, and every year since, his mastery of music amazes me. Truly a hero of it all ... the business of inspiration, the brilliant guitar, the soul behind the lyrics.
+Joe Jensen sorry but what does the fact of your friend being handicapped or in a wheelchair have to do with anything--
Had to do with my recall of the performance, seeing how it inspired her added to my own admiration of his skills I guess
Joe Jensen high Joe .. do like your attitude and comments hope you and girlfriend are doing fine. She's definitely got good taste in modern/rock/folk music and hearing your comment saying you like him because she does is great but deapdown you will love him as the years go by you, because his music will live forever and unfortunately we don't. I'm in my 70s now and have admired his talent with the guitar found out that he can actually sing from his heart and compose songs and music almost at will, all this from dire straits till now. I've followed him only via records cds and now utube which by the way is magical, and never seen or heard him perform live. I worked in the coalmines, tunnelling, and factory maintenance from 1961 till 2015, and never seemed to have enough spare cash to warrant buying a concert ticket, there was always a bill of some sort that was more important. I grew up in the Newcastle area and had friends that knew him personally and they all spoke well of him as one of the guys. His band of utterly talented musicians are his equal to their own instruments and station within it, everyone of them say he is a perfectionist but never tells the band members how to achieve this perfection, they all do their part in their own mind within the music within the band to achieve the sound we hear. Mark Knopfler is the star and his relentless search for perfection is obvious as it is performed brilliantly through all of the rest of his band. Listen. .listen and enjoy , I just lose myself.

The perfection of a recording is different than the perfection in a live concert. It is rare to have them both. I saw him play in the United Palace in Harlem and it was magical.
As an unwell 77 year old, I am grateful to MK for this wonderful journey from the 80s to the present. I have enjoyed and been uplifted by every song. Thank you.
I feel for you as I experienced 80 yo problems as soon as I reached 50. Please, keep listening at tough times as this keeps away the mind spiraling downwards and producing more symptoms. We want to be lifted up😀

Old dude myself lol only 70 but why does it take this long to appreciate absolutely brilliant guitarist like mark listen to him and i just drift off hopefully into another world where we all go to peace luv u all ❤❤
At 9 minutes in, he's flying, levitating, hovering and drifting above everything. He loves his music & message as much now as he ever did. Us too. I have flying, levitating dreams almost every night, and wake up feeling awesome. I'm a 73 year old proud Geordie from Wallsend on Tyne, and he's a Scottish, Geordie, Jewish national treasure. I don't think he even realizes how revered he is by his fans.
I can say without an inch of doubt that the world would be worse off without Mark. Thank you for existing, Mark!❤
Best singer + best guitarist + best composer + best songwriter + best storyteller = Mark Knopfler
I Second That Observation...

Absolute genius 👏 🙌
In your beautiful music and with the tip of your fingers you Mr- Knophler summarize how the great west was built. Thank you sir
It's not every day you get to see a genius at work. Thanks for the upload.
The mystery is why people watch 15 minutes then bother to be disrespect it with a dislike. If not their cup of tea fine but there is obviously no need to paint a dislike onto the picture. Makes me wonder what mentality is behind it. I don't like several artist but wouldn't bother to watch them in the first place, if one were to trawl yt looking for things to dislike it could become a full time job
True but Mark still wins, only 32 out or 499,848 - not bad :-)
Listen to the guitar playing at 11:49 Pierre and you'll have your answer - I didn't vote the clip down, but can understand people's disappointment at 5 secs of truly awful guitar playing. I'll guarantee Mark would be the first to agree.
Sure, just as soon as you remove your delusion coloured glasses......
He missed some notes ^^ so what? it is live ;) speaking about the things he does with his guitar during that song in 13 minutes, one wrong move from a guy who is already god damn fucking old does not really matter ;) I think, it makes him more likable because you see, that he is getting old, is not as fast as he once was and he still plays tour after tour to make his fans happy ;)
I mean like... he is still human and humans do make mistakes ^^ Metallica's lead guitarist makes mistakes in nearly every song, doesn't make him less of a great musician ;)
He was not the Sultan of Swing, he is a God of Swing.

Mark Knopfler is not only a genuine Guitar Hero, he`s a great songwriter too, and despite that, which has turned other musicians, with the same qualities into Giant Egos, Mark Knopfler has remained a modest, and humble Human Being, completely Down to Earth........and that`s incredibly rare..............and that´s what he is........as a musicians and a Human Being................incredibly rare...........and simply just............. " One of a kind ".....................❤
I don't think this man gets enough recognition he's a genius,I smile everytime i watch him
He gets recognition from literally everyone I know who has any feeling for good music.. the sad truth is that the garbage that claims to be music these days is nothing but autotune and the same bland melodies 😞 This man is me and my dads hero !
I recognised him early 80s and still do. His music defines my life!
I had the honor and blessings to talk to Jeff Beck, being that he knew a very dear friend of mine that was one of the three that started Tower Records. Jeff said that Mark was an absolute genius on the guitar and a great friend, that anyone would like to have. Personally, I’m not a guitarist, but I would put him in the top ten, just personally, without any particular reason.
what are you talking about, anyone that knows music, knows who he is and what hes done............ you're fucking clueless
I couldn't agree more. He is also a gentleman, a dreamer, a traveler and a story teller all his life. I love him so much. I can feel his heart.
I never tire of listening to MK. I played his songs to my three kids when they were growing up and they've started playing it to their kids, so the third generation that will grow to his music, which doesn't date because of his genius. I consider myself lucky to have found him and have spent countless hours enjoying his music.

My husband passed away not even a year ago and I remember that we were both listening to your song sitting close to a beach in our motorhome and we both just cried. We always loved your songs and we even played some of them and Scott was learning to sing and go busking with me. His very first ever song at a Karaoke show was Sultans of swing and it took me almost an hour to sign him up to sing it. He was my best friend and husband and listening to this now by myself is ripping my heart out, but it helps me grieving. Thank you Mark ♥️

1985 QE2 stadium, Brisbane Queensland, Australia. Nobody controlled the volume, the magic sounds reverberated through your soul . Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. Dire straits are truly one of the great bands of all time. Four kilometres away apparently sounded like the neighbours having a loud party . My hearing retuned to normal the next day. Now all outdoor concerts since have had volume controls applied. Even AC/DC weren’t allowed to play as loud . Thank you Mark Knopfler for the music
The song Telegraph Road first appeared on the 1982 Dire Straits album ‘Love over Gold’ and it embodies the superb song writing and guitar playing skills of Mark Knopfler, the band’s leader, composer, singer and lead guitar player.
The song takes a quarter of an hour to unfold an epic story of the rise and decline of a town. For this song, Knopfler was inspired by the city of Detroit, although the song never reveals the name of that place by the lake, since he wanted to make a statement about the whole country. Knopfler was born in Scotland and was much impressed by the can-do spirit of America when he started touring that vast continent.
So let us have a closer look at the text and the music.
A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
He made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And the other travellers came walking down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
This first part of the song, written from a third-person perspective, evokes the myth of the Far West, where a traveller could lay down his load and call that place his own. Knopfler was partly inspired by the novel ‘Growth of the Soil’, with a similar story.
The song opens with a flute, illustrating the sunrise, the eternal beginning or a journey.
The flute fades into a lazy guitar intro that perfectly accompanies the arrival of a single man, the founding father.
The song starts slow and evokes the image of a pristine, hospitable natural environment, a great place to settle oneself. His decision to stay, inspires other travellers to do likewise, and the place gradually grows into a modern town, which is not merely revealed in the text but also accentuated by the rising sound of drums and keyboards, transforming the feel from pastoral to urban. The pace is quickly losing its unspoiled nature as it is gradually moulded into an industrial rhythm, required for growth.
Then came the churches, then came the schools
Then came the lawyers, then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads
And the dirty old track was the Telegraph Road
Then came the mines, then came the ore
Then there was the hard times, then there was a war
Telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph Road got so deep and so wide
Like a rolling river
In this second part, the town grows rapidly. Infrastructure, rules, employment; the town expanded to the size of a metropolis, a rolling river.
Nor the hand times of the Great Depression, nor the Second World War could halt the expansion. It is an unstoppable chain of events, illustrated by the repetition of the word ‘then’ that is used nine times in this part.
And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
There's six lanes of traffic
Three lanes moving slow
We make another jump forward in time. Now there are car radios and the song switched from the past to the present tense.
One starts hearing rumours that this mighty rolling river might one day freeze to a halt.
Mind the last two lines of that strophe, the subtle tilting moment of the song: The six lines of traffic confirm that the city has expanded hugely and is at its vibrant peak; the three lanes that move slow not only illustrate the inevitable chaos that results from unrestrained growth. They also foreshadow the coming decline of Detroit when the car manufactures will slow down production and will ultimately close their plants.
The song holds its breath on that pivotal point, on the highest peak of the relentless growth, before a melancholic duet of piano and guitar provokes a sentiment of loss, leading up the third and final part of the lyrics about decline, unemployment, loss of innocence and the desire to abandon the doomed city when utopia ultimately morphs into dystopia.
I used to like to go to work, but they shut it down
I've got a right to go to work, but there's no work here to be found
Yes, and they say we're gonna have to pay what's owed
We're gonna have to reap from some seed that's been sowed
And the birds up on the wires and the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the Telegraph Road.
Things start to go downhill. The protagonist of the song loses his job and the people now have to pay the price for the uncontrolled expansion of the past.
The people are stuck in that decline. They cannot simply leave. They aren’t birds on a wire that can effortlessly fly away to a new destination.
Well, I'd sooner forget, but I remember those nights
Yeah, life was just a bet on a race between the lights
You had your head on my shoulder, you had your hand in my hair
Now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care
When the going gets tough, people tend to think back of the good old days. But that won’t bring them back. The first-person singular perspective that takes over when things go downhill hints to a decline of the community, the first-person plural. When the dream is gone, the social fabric atomises into individuals that fight for their own survival. Even the bond between partners grows colder in that struggle, as if they no longer seem to care.
But just believe in me, baby, and I'll take you away
From out of this darkness and into the day
From these rivers of headlights, these rivers of rain
From the anger that lives on the streets with these names
'Cause I've run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into flames
And I don't want to see it again
From all of these signs saying, "Sorry, but we're closed"
All the way
Down the Telegraph Road
But humans cannot exist without hope. When things break down, they crave for a fresh start, a new journey into the light, where one can build a home.
So the exodus starts, accelerated by the race riots that erupted in Detroit after the closure of the factories. ‘The anger that lives on the streets,’ and ‘I've seen desperation explode into flames,’ refer to those dark days, that led to the white flight and the further disintegration of the city.
In the last lines of the song, the protagonist and his partner embark on their final journey past the fading relics of past glory, down the Telegraph Road, escaping the doomed city, not sure where that road will lead to.
The struggle of life is never over, never permanently won nor lost. It just continues and has no closure, just as the original Telegraph Road in Detroit inspired Knopfler for this song because it seemed to go on and on forever. And so, the lyrics of this unfinished story cease.
But that is not the end of the song.
The last five minutes of the song evoke the new rise of that - or the next - town, this time without words since the song no longer requires lyrics to be understood.
Knopfler’s musical skills are so huge that he can continue the story with mere music.
That last part starts hesitatingly and slowly builds on a continuous crescendo that encapsules the power that is inherent to the restless ambition of mankind with his urge to conquer and build, with occasional outbursts of entropy and excess. You can hear another river starting to roll louder and louder.
Although this final part is quite long - one-third of the song -, the listener doesn’t lose his interest in this marvelous blend of drums, synthesizer, and piano on top of which Knopfler's energetic guitar solos reveal carefully crafted melodies of all the way to an extended, steaming climax, without falling into symphonic rock clichés.
Usually, lyrics are put on top of the musical background. In this song, the opposite seems to have happened: the music is put on a textual background, unfolding a subtle multi-instrumental story.
Now, forty years after it was recorded, ‘Telegraph Road’ has lost nothing of its timeless appeal and one can say it has reached a monumental status.
Being an avid electric guitar player myself at the time this album hit the sound waves, I was obviously struck by Knopfler's marvelous guitar playing skills and his unique ability to write an almost Wagnerian narrative with mere music.
Knopfler’s style is different from that of other famous guitar players. It is never about flashy techniques or repetitive riffs. His does not use a pick but plays the guitar with his right-hand fingers, which profoundly influences the way the instrument is played. Knopfler’s guitar is dominant but never sounds egocentric. That is a huge testament to his prowess.
Just like Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and other renowned singer-songwriters, Marc Knopfler has modest vocal capacities, but somehow that is not an impediment to his songs that never require vocal acrobatics. He obviously takes that into account when he composes, just as Freddy Mercury did in the opposite way, allowing him to show off his vocal reach.
This very down to earth man, who was never interested in the hedonistic life of a rockstar, has entered his seventh decade and continues to create timeless music that is very worthwhile to listen to. But this song remains the high watermark of his creative genius.
Most pop music is conceived and consumed as bubble-gum and rare are the gems that transcend that format and can be labelled as timeless art. This is one of them.
Knopfler is one of the best guitarists and songwriters in the history of popular music.
Completely wrong. Sorry. He is THE best guitarist and songwriter in the history of popular music.

Mark is one of the reasons I play. He is the best in everything that's needed in his profession!!
There are great guitarists in this world, then there’s Mark Knopfler…..
Oohh Jahh....
He and his music took my heart and my conciueness and he killed mehr with " Brothers in Armsw"
@@thorsteneschenhagen7096 Brothers in Arms is beyond belief. It touches something deep in my soul.
No..we have Andrea Braido.
Made in Italy
Dont forget the great david gilmour
Cringe
2 absolute monster solo's in one song, it keeps building throughout the song and when I'm listening my way towards the end of the second solo I'm literally super pumped up with pure joyful energy and I can't stop smiling, like the old saying from my country, I'm paraphrasing here because I'll have to translate: "If I didn't have ears, my smile would've encircled my head"- What and absolute master piece, one of many from MK.
And keep in mind this song starts close to 90 minutes into the concert after he had done a pretty high energy, for his age, version of Sultans of Swing and a 9 minutes (more or less) version of Speedway at Nazareth. Mark was 66 years old back then God bless him.
I'm 70 and still digging it
I'm a 70 year old drummer in N.C. THIS BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES. Wish I'd played this with someone
I just discovered Mark Knpfler this month and I’m hooked, I’ve been listening to him everyday.
Yes, he's awesome! I've been listening to him from back in the Dire straits days in the 70s. Enjoy your new found performer!
you have a lot to recover dud
About as good as it gets
Surely you know Dire Straits Gary?
Me too
All the greats are getting up there in age. They will live forever in their music. We should be so honored to have them in our time.
Yeah, I'm 67. I've always felt very grateful that I lived in the best era of music.
their ...
Pushing 65, one very great full Aussie here too.
We were blessed.
Thankyou ❤❤❤❤
A true gentleman who has brought so much pleasure to so many, a composer of wonderful music.
The first guitar solo not being here is a beautiful thing. Before you call me an idiot, I love MK and think this is one of the greatest songs in the history of rock. But the piano solo in this is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard!!
The piano on the record is brilliant. Alan Clark. Respect.
Class. Pure class.
Nothing can beat the magic that knopfler delivers.
Then and still.
he might be old. But he still plays and sings well.
I have been a huge fan of him for the last 7-8 year, my inspiration since i started to play guitar 9 years ago .
+Mikkel Bach Kristensen My dear friend, a Great Sacred Monster, like Mr. Knopfler never gets old, he gets more and more experienced and wise. Cheers.
+Mikkel Bach Kristensen He's younger than I am and since Im not old, then neither is he. and age has little to do with his playing and singing. That comes with experience.
He IS the music !!!
he ain't old. Look at Chuck Berry, he made it to 90. Pete Seeger was near that. Mark Knopfler has a LONG way to go, I think he's just hitting his stride, here.
Me too. Bought an acoustic a few months after seeing him in concert in 08. Still trying to learn. Tough instrument but rewarding.
I’ve died 3 times and still on the road, Jesus is going to make me do something, I don’t know what it is yet, but I am listening, you are not alone
Mark when I'am alive
Mark when I'am dead.
The best Guitarist the World has ever known!
Ever heard of Chet Atkins??
Sure, he and Mark made an album together, and Mark is a Certified Guitar Player. Chet is one of the Guitar Gods.
L'esorcista film
don`t forget david G . from our all time great PINK FLOYD . ;))
U must remember he writes produces orchestrates practices because he loves it has built British Grove etc much more than believable and u wonder who is best guitarist? Mark K nopfler has it all over any 10 players you can think of.
I remember buying the album Love over Gold in Woolworths when it first came out in 1982 and rushing home to play it. When Telegraph Road came on, it was one of those moments in your life that you will always remember….I was totally blown away! Later that week I was chatting about music with some friends in the pub and I mentioned I had bought the new Dire Straits album to which one of them replied “so did I’” and then we both said in unison “oh my God Telegraph Road!!!”…..40 years on and it hasn’t aged a day….musical genius!
The wonderful thing you described happened to me too. I agree with you . Age does not limit the talent of this Genius!❤️🎸🎶🎤🎧😃👋👋
Yeah - the first time you listen to songs like Telegraph Road , you know you've just experienced something special .... the thing is that Knopfler did it on more than one occassion ! e.g. Brother in Arms (the actual track) .. almost timeless songs
I agree, but as time has gone on, I’ve come to value the title track even more.
Same thing bud I was 17 …magical
Great story. Thanks for that ..I was 16 in 1982.
Those were great days.
My favourite song of all time. A masterpiece.
His guitar work is simply beautiful.
It really is. Soooo distinct and lovely.
At 9:19 the Maestro Knopfler gives a class on the guitar. He takes it apart, puts it back together and makes it do whatever he commands it to do through his hands.I saw him in Dallas in 2015 and his performance was much the same, breathtaking!
Lucky man!

Si, yes he is the maestro.
Artistic genius. Musically? Of course. Storyteller? Extraordinaire. The ability to make you feel what he wants you to feel? Unmatched. Unmatched.
He can tell a story like few others!

I had the honour of advising Mark n Band in 91 in Sydney re nutrition n training
He bestowed not less than 60 tickets for my family n friends
Was fascinated by Marks genuine kindness
An absolutely wonderful and amazing gentleman
Thank you so very much ♥️💯🎸
This is comprehesive, complete and a masterwork. Such a gift. It is a piece of music I could listen to everyday and never tire.
Not only is Mr Knopfler one of the greatest guitarists to have even lived, but he's also a thoroughly decent and humble man.
rolling stoned has him in the top 100, but i think that list is at least 50% bullshit. Knopfler is easily in the top 10, maybe the top 5 imho.
Top 10 without a doubt
He was my friend...
Hi is my frind (he does not know he is)
Couldn’t agree with you more
Dear Mr. Knopfler, thank you for cheering us once again with this lovely song. I wish you and your family lots of health and hapiness, you deserve it.
