Adam's been wanting to build this kit for years: a decal set that allows him to make a 1/10 scale shipping container like the 40-foot ones that move freight around the world on massive container ships. Adam's scaled-down version will be four feet long, and make for an awesome bench and storage box in the workshop. And of course it sits on casters!

@@brianpedersen8608 You can take high resolution photographs of a container from ground level, staying square to the subject. The hard part is getting the overhead view, but that is what freeway overpasses and rush hour are for . Send the files digitally to one of the online sign companies to print in vinyl, and voila, you have your set, only customized for the exact container you want to replicate. I just checked one company, and an opaque car decal 48 X 60 was less than 90 bucks plus tax but with free shipping.
In fact, just doing that quick research has given me some ideas....

Tip for the squeegy you had there to stop it from scratching a decal get some 1" masking tape wrap it around the blade end half inch on half off then you have a softer flap to lay the decal down with. @googiegress7459 Před 3 lety +1

For a tabletop RPG you'd normally use 1:60 scale for the shipping container, so it would be 8" long. At that scale, you might make the corrugated side texture by peeling off one sheet of paper from a piece of cardboard to expose the ridges inside, inserting wooden skewers to reinforce the inner gaps with white glue. But that would be way too rough, since the scale texture of the ridges would be about 1/32" deep, but you'd do it so the miniature reads better on the table. You could definitely just have a flat surface with an impression of a texture from painting or a sticker.

Adam, please please PLEASE use the riving knife in your saw. As a cabinetmaker and furniture designer I can tell you it's the single most important piece that no one talks about on a saw. Using it will save your fingers and keep any pieces from kicking back at you. Also, it's safer and better for the saw blade if the blade is raised a 1/2 to 3/4" above the material for the same reason, it's much harder for the blade to grab and send it back to you. It also reduces the wear on the blade as it's travelling through less material to make the cut. I love love these one day builds, but please be safe!

I started watching this video about 3 hours ago and then my new monitor mount was delivered. In the process of setting it up, I accidentally ripped the cord of my speakers I have been using for about 10 years. So, I go and get the backup pair I have and I plug them in and start hearing this horrible buzzing noise. I at this point am very frustrated because the monitor mount was not the easiest to put together in the world and I am very tired. This leads me to be even more frustrated that I have no PC speakers to listen to this video on. I got so annoyed I got my wire strippers and some electrical tape and fixed the speaker I had ripped the wire of just to plug it in and have the sound persist! At this point, I had decided it was my computer and went for a full restart. I open my browser and pick the first video I see to test the audio and low and behold it works! I can finally go back and finish the tested video. To my surprise I start the video back up and what do I hear? The annoying buzzing noise again! I by this time finally realize the issue the whole time had been the audio in the video. I have to say that now looking back at myself twenty minutes ago gives me quite a laugh. I hope my tale leaves you laughing as well. Also, if Adam or anyone else on the tested crew sees this, thanks for the great videos recently (including this one).

Adam, some advice on vinyl application from someone whose family has been doing it here in Toronto for over a decade:
You can apply some masking tape to the beginning of your vinyl and tape it down after you line everything up (if it's rolled, make sure it's as straight as possible so it doesn't creep). Then you can flip the sheet so the backing is facing up, peel it off, and then stick it down. This method is better because then you don't have vinyl trying to stick itself down all the time, there's a lot more control. Also you can purchase a pick tool (literally just a sharp pointy end with an exacto blade handle) it's great to separate the vinyl from its backing. Hope this helps!

I told him once he was not building pianos and he said it doesnt matter, it might as well be. If you cannot take pride everything you do, then you shouldn't be doing it. He lived in a different time where nothing was thrown away and whatever you made reflected on you. His craftsmanship still stands out even though he is gone now. I don't know you personally but I watched all of mythbusters when it was on. I was soooooo sad when i heard that Grant and Jessi were no longer with us. Glad your still doing cool builds. Even though you and jaimie didn't get along, you two always brightened my day and I thank you. I have always wanted to meet you guys.

Total side bar but as an Australian I hear:
Metric: 1,10,100 everything is simple ....a 55 mm cut etc.
Imperial: 54 and eleventy sixteenth quantums....gibberish.

Agree, I'm in the U.S but use Metric it's so much easier.

    • @SyntheticFuture
      @SyntheticFuture Před 3 lety +11

Nah it's super simple. You just devide it by 8, multiply it by 2.57 and then divide it by 13. At that point you measure how large the moon is in the sky, multiply that by the size of your foot and add that to the other value and you are all done. Simple!

I used to have a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird that was put together with a seemingly-random mixture of metric and imperial nuts and bolts. I had to buy an extra socket set just to change its brake pads; the brake calipers were bolted on with metric bolts, but the brake hose clamps were bolted on with imperial bolts, and the last thing I wanted to do was round off the corners of rusty brake bolts with wrong-sized sockets. As a rational American (yes, we do exist), I wish we'd hurry up and ditch Ye Olde units based on the size of long-dead monarchs' body parts.

All the metric snobs come out of the woodwork. We in the US can use both, the rest of the world refuses to see that.

      Curiosityness
I’m gob smacked. And not very photogenic. I’d like to discuss it further.
But I did follow in his foot steps as a truck driver.
I’m told he was upset with waiting at ports for freight to be off loaded and prepared to be trucked inland.
This led to his tinkering and planning.

Little tip on decals. Use a little dishwashing soap and water foam. That way the stickers won’t stick right away and you can easily squeegee the bubbles out. Start from the middle and work outwards. Use a little soap on to too to help the squeegee slide so you don’t scratch the print.

Info from a Trucker: People that dont know, call them SHIPPING CONTAINERS. People that sell them call them CONNEX. People that ship/move them, call them INTERMODAL. Yours is based on a standard 40' x 8' x 8'. If the walls were taller, it would be called HIGH CUBE.
Tip, Adam: Wear headphones for music. You can listen to it While talking. Distracting, sure. But non-stop music.....
