Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Electronics Tool Cart!

  • It's finally time for Adam to rebuild his workshop's electronics tool cart--a project he's put off all year. But starting with his soldering station he built earlier this year, Adam reassembles the cart to carry only the essential electronics gear and materials he knows he'll use most in his projects. It's tool reorganization as both therapy and a step toward efficiency--and highly satisfying on both counts!

When it comes to shop organization I always seem to fall into a trap of favorite tool bias vs most used tools. All to often I have a tool I really like that ends up being put front and center even though it's a tool that rarely gets used.

I know its been reiterated multiple times in the comments of other videos but I love this '1 man band' type filming. Moving the camera around himself, making adjustments, saying "ah you can't see that" then moving the camera. Agreed! I firmly believe that content like this, along with my other favorite CZcamsrs, is the "reality TV" we were promised some 40 years ago. The first stab at it (Survivor, Big Brother, etc.) missed the point... very little "real" in these shows. Watching real people doing their "thing" is so much more interesting. Adam's enthusiasm is fantastic and infectious, in the best way.

He should have a garage sale. Why in the hell do you need 4 fluke multimeters? I mean no disrespect to Adam, he is a childhood hero of mine, but sometimes I get the impression he's a bit of a hoarder.
I remember the drill press video he did specifically where he replaced the broken chuck on his drill press and could not bring himself to throw it away, and instead, put it on a shelf in the shop.
I get that Adam use to do metal sculptures, and that sort of thing is useful for art as its a beautiful piece of machining, but when you've got literal walls and ceilings and aloft and every nook in cranny contain 5x copies of the same thing, and you haven't made a metal sculpture in awhile, maybe its best to let it go.
In the case of the multimeter, Adam talked about going to a swap and finding a fluke multimeter for like $100 and it being way above the caliber he could afford normally while getting into the hobby. Let some of those go to people who would cherish them the same way, Adam.

I love watching One Day Builds, it's relaxing. As a software developer, I can't help notice the parallels between some of the builds (this one in particular) with refactoring a legacy codebase. Much of the feelings and experience is the same.
For example, As time passes by, you observe that the code (in this case the cart) becomes harder and harder to use and to integrate with the work that you need to accomplish until you finally go ahead and refactor the codebase.

Thanks for the Dad advice! I don't have children but i do have an attic maker shop that's perpetually under construction... "not what I want it to be, but see it for what it is"

I need a modular system to my workspace as well. The terms "I might need that" or "that could be useful" have led to a mess or lost time trying to find something. Thanks for the inspiration Adam!

Next one day build: Torch Relocation. I feel like that thing is going to fall every time you move the cart. Love the video. Thanks for sharing!

I agree - too top heavy. The first time he grabs the cart wrong and that torch topples over he's going to add a higher support. Maybe a u-shaped board that the handle tips into when you put in place.

For the torch location at 9:00, you could have made it sit on a slightly angled wedge of wood, so it tilts the torch backward slightly. Would make it a lot harder to fall out of the hole when moving the cart.

I was going to say keep the screwdrivers when working on electronic projects nothing sucks more than needing a specialized screwdriver and having to run to the tool box to get it especially if you work like I do and it's minimum 100 feet from work area to my toolbox job carts are a lifesaver for me

As an australian, i can comfirm, "that cart is a dog's breakfast mate." However we would use at least 2 F bombs, and 1 "bloody"

"bloody hell, that f'n cart is a dog's breakfast mate"... I could only find one reasonable spot for the f bomb... But I am also an American so I don't speak crikey very well... At all.

For the torch holder maybe cut out a piece of refrigerator magnet and mount in base. Fairly weak so easy to pull out torch but strong enough to provide stability.
