3 Stops in 4 Minutes with an Amazon Delivery Driver

  • Alex shows a bit of what it is like to be an Amazon delivery driver. This is not an official Amazon training video. It is simply a demonstration of what a driver does from the inside of a delivery van. This was filmed in March, 2020 before Amazon had defined rules about mask wearing while delivering.

    Some drivers move so efficiently its actually borderline unbelievable. I worked with one guy who would finish his 10hr route in ~4hrs, RTS with his van, switch to his personal truck, pick up a 5hr flex route and still be completely done before our scheduled end time. He would do that 5-6 days/week and just acted like it was super casual. Literally always had perfect customer feedback scores too. That guy was better at his job than anyone else I’ve ever personally known in my life.

      Until you get asshole customers that mark DNR.. People will literally say they didn't get there package just to get something free, not knowing it can cost the driver there job if they get 5 DNR's.. It's a joke honestly.. You can be perfect yet still lose your job because of untrustworthy people.

      I am a dispatcher for a DSP and started as a driver I can tell you that the routing system learns and will increase package counts for a particular route. So you got the best drivers who will increase a routes package count. Since routes aren’t given assignments that means slower drivers may get those routes and lay an egg which means now you need to get that driver a rescue. Also if you go too slow you’ll put a target on your back and be rescued every day. Sad thing about that is right now no one wants to work so we have to keep all these drivers that are consistently 20 stops behind while the drivers who hit 40-50 stops ahead, get burnt out if your DSP doesn’t have incentives and different programs to reward those drivers. I hope to own my own in a year or two.

I feel like I got very lucky with my DSP they did guarantee 10 hour days through peak season with a bunch of giveaways and they’ve always treated the drivers like humans and working with them on schedules and other things like that. I understand that not all DSPs are like that though, since they are all contracted out. I’ve heard of DSPs that have no competition in their station lowering their pay to minimum wage to maximize profits. Every DSP in my station pays like three dollars over the minimum wage.

    Just had my first day yesterday and it was BRUTAL. My first 12 hour shift ever in my life. My entire body hurts. Thankfully i have today off but starting tomorrow I worked Sunday-Wednesday and have no idea how I'm going to survive physically.
    Finding packages was definitely my biggest problem and walking instead of jogging was my second problem. I've since learned to sort the current box whenever I have to open a new one and that made the finding the packages a bit easier. But now I gotta hustle outside the van and I already have two blisters on my right foot. I'm praying I can survive this because they're starting me at 17.50 an hour.

    • @amack06
      @amack06 Před 2 lety +28

      Organizing the van is going to save you from having to run on your routes.
      Empty your current tote and organize by driver aid number (4 digit number on yellow sticker). Put everything that you can in the front seat (have a bin with you for envelopes, it helps a ton) and stack your small boxes and medium boxes by number as well. Pull out all your current zone OVs and lay them by the side door, labels facing you so you can grab and go.
      The name of the game is having everything ready to go so you get to a stop, grab your package from the front seat, walk quickly to the front door while scanning. By the time you get to the door, you should have it so you're ready to take the picture. Swipe to finish and then select begin route as you walk back to the van, taking note as to what you need next. Repeat. Become so fast at houses that you can pace your apartments, especially if you have "luxury" Apts with no package room or lockers. Those are the worst lmfao
      I started during peak last year at 400 lbs, in South Florida, upwards of 360 to 400 pkgs and 180-210+ stops.
      You'll get it with time, brother, if you choose to stick it out! Hope this helps! 🙏

    Of couse anyone can do 3 stops in 4 min. There practically right next to each other and these are homes. Me, if is a few doors away, I just walk instead of going in and out of the van. The routes they give me are on major busy streets. And the Apt buildings, half the time, the codes don't work. And the half they're not home to let me in. And some prefer for us to deliver to their door steps instead of leaving it by the mailbox in the lobby. Which sometimes I can have 20 stops in a huge apt complex thats shape like a maze and has 6 floors.

      I only work 4 days a week. Try to volunteer for an extra day. The boss cancel my shift and say it's been cancel. OK??? They say, we can have overtime up to 2 hrs. Which, we don't even work 8 hrs. They're trying so hard for us not to work certain amount of hrs. And especially, no overtime. And I only work from 9:20 am till 4 or 4:30 pm. How do you survive with those hrs in Los Angeles? The cost of living in LA is ridiculous. For example, a bachelor pad in a bad neighborhood runs maybe $950 or higher. For a studio, $1,300 and up. Residential during the day in a neighborhood like that is the easiest you can get. For people watching don’t think it’s like this unless you get extremely lucky and even if you do it probably won’t be a set route unless again you’re extremely lucky. Odds are you will be delivering in the evening in the dark to apartments from hell and country houses where people like to have their dogs unleashed and forget they order a package.
    There was a short time I had a set route in a residential during the day like this I absolutely loved it. But then once they switch us to nights and country routes and different routes everyday. Then they had us come back to the warehouse multiple times for different small routes it was just complete hell and pretty much unethical imo.

      That's not even counting the zig-zagging your flex has you going.

    • @nicholasnoriega1205
      @nicholasnoriega1205 Před 2 lety +1

      That’s pretty much the only thing Iagreed he SHOULD do. Scanning in van is way easier then scanning and looking stupid at the front door. When I delivered i was always one of the fastest and would scan packages then as Im walking up get the camera ready then boom place down snap pick ring door bell swipe delivered as im walking back. Vs walking to front door. Having the possibility of the phone freezing on you while your standing at the front door forever scanning the packages. The the customer opens the door waiting for you lol. Yeah fuck that. And I don’t care what no one says I have always done that and never had one issue.

      They have to be scanned at the point of delivery, which is the front door. If not, it could be marked delivered before the customer even get the package, or could say you’ve stole it. Yes I know it’s stupid 🙄🤷🏽‍♀️ but that’s how it’s done.

  • @nicholasnoriega1205

    1. Don’t have your door open
    2. You wouldn’t have to have your door open if you had the current tote packeges ready in the front seat. (Technically not supposed to do that either but every does it and it helps sooo much)
    3. I always scanned first the package in truck before you even get out. (Again technically not supposed to but that saves you time so you wont be standing stupid at the front door loading the phone
    4. Wtf is the point of you putting that mask around your ears if you’re not going to wear it.
    5. Have your totes in order from the start. When at the warehouse place the totes in order so your not looking to check which tote it is. This goes with my first point.
