    One of the best versions ever made of this iconic song -- stunning, powerful, emotional, engaging, creative, beautiful. Pentatonix hits different -- hope you all enjoy ❤ Also PSA this is the last PTX analysis I did back in August before learning how to properly pronounce Kirstin's name so apologies for that -- I actually pronounce it correctly twice and incorrectly twice in this video so who knows what my brain was doing. Anyway, many of you have pointed that out to me, and this will be the last one where it's ~occasionally~ not correct. Much love 🙏

    I've found that what sets Pentatonix aside from other acapella groups is their ability to make their sound feel very organic in a way I don't think a lot of groups attain. I listen to a lot of music genres but acapella is my main, and in my listening experience I have found that the more human-sounding groups tend to be missing something and the more exaggerated sounding groups also tend to lack a certain humanity and realness to them, both things I think Pentatonix figured out and manage to bridge the gap beautifully on - That paired with the phenomenal talent, skill, hard work, and polished refinement each individual singer has, puts them on another level of music within the genre.

    You were speaking about how Matt has done such an exceptional job filling Avi's shoes.
    I recently saw a live performance of hallelujah with Matt. It was so wonderful. He did an amazing job of singing his section of that song. He did not try to copy or be another Avi. It was more of a celebration of HIS unique abilities.
    He took it a completely different direction. He went high with it.
    I know you are super busy with your career. But if you could find some time to get back to pentatonix. I so love your reactions and the breakdown of the video/song.

    @the22ndday Před 2 lety +16

    The beauty of Pentatonix is the 3 Mitch, Kirsten, Scott grew up together. Their voices matured together and the beauty is they flow together, intertwine. Always reminds me of how smoke like from blown out candles flow in and around each other. Also, Scott never out sings the others. He knows when to float in with everyone else. There is never any fighting for the “listen to me” spot when it’s not their turn. BUT, if you listen you can pick out each voice if you listen. Perfect. Always a smooth flow.

    So true that Matt had big shoes to fill, and a passionate fan base to win over. It took some time for many of us to find room in our hearts to let him in, but I think he does a phenomenal job. Is it common for a bass range to deepen as singers get older? If so, is it probable that Matt will continue to extend the lower end of his range if he chooses to work on it? Love your detailed commentary and genuine appreciation for the skill of all PTX members. Always here for your reactions.

    • @PeterBarber
      @PeterBarber  Před 2 lety +60

      Yes, the bass voice does tend to deepen and get darker as the singer gets older, especially if they continue singing and training. If they don't, eventually the muscles will atrophy like all muscles do with old age, and the voice will become much weaker and lose range on both ends

      I 100% agree! I, legit, just experienced utter humiliation, due to that lil gem of an adjective! 😬🤦‍♀️ I'm in the McDonald's parking lot right now, & just watched this vid, which was my first experience w/ this channel. I had JUST taken a sip of my iced coffee, when "Emotional nards" was mic dropped, which caused my coffee to go down the wrong 'pipe', because I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD! 😂🤣😂🤣 I could FEEL the people, in the neighboring car, staring at me, while I tried to compose myself. I was purposely not looking at them, due to my embarrassment, but I HAD to look when I heard 2 quick lil "beep beeps" of their horn. I looked next to me and saw 3 people, 2 men & 1 woman, with looks of worry & concern on their faces. The passenger rolled down his window & very kindly asked if I was choking & if I needed any help....... Oh, God, please just take me now! 🤦‍♀️ It was very nice of them to make sure I was OK, but I'm so embarrassed that I can literally FEEL how red my face is, & it's not from the coughing 😳 So, Peter, if you happen to read this message, I just wanna thank you for your very well made content/banter, the laughs, & helping to show, inadvertently, that there are still some truly KIND & COMPASSIONATE people left in the world. I'm definitely subbing & doing a deep dive into your past vids, when I get home later. I hope you, & everyone else, has a wonderful holiday, & I'm sorry for my novel length message! 🤣🤣

    I must agree, PTX are the MASTERS of evoking lots of emotions in a song and also creating the real heart of the story of that song. I love Mitch's enunciation on the words and how he builds the emotions higher. And then Matt comes in with his rich voice and adding more punch to lead into Kirstie's role of taking it to the higher part of the song. Then Scott comes in again to push the last verse into overdrive and to the top of the song, or the top of the rollercoaster. And Kirstie's background is stunning and we get the height of Kevin's rhythm and percussion. Then they all come in together to draw you up into the heavens before they literally drop you back down to earth and the harmonies of that last "sound" doesn't quite let you go until they end in a soft and slow "silence". WOW !!! What a song. Love your analysis on this and hope to hear more from you on PTX songs.

  • @bethclarke3899
    @bethclarke3899 Před 2 lety +38

    I didn't see anyone else drop this comment yet, so I apologize if it's redundant but it's a point well worth making. Many of us consider there to be a sort of Holy Trinity of The Sound Of Silence:
    S&G - the original artists, sung as a warning
    Disturbd - anger/despair that the warning has been ignored
    PTX - a return to the intricate harmonies & layering that is a reiteration of the warning along with a hopefulness that maybe it's not too late to pay attention and make changes.
    As much as I enjoy watching laypeople get Mitch slapped and just general reactions, I most enjoy watching deep dives by people knowledgeable enough to break down the details and relatable enough to make it accessible for all levels. I miss the days of being able to play music at a serious level, and having this is almost the next best thing to being back on stage with an orchestra or nerding out with my other musician friends. There are a handful of really good reactors who give this kind of analysis and I really appreciate it.

      I'm very much a layperson here. Much was made about the technique to get the sound, when I believe its the vocalization of the frustration in the actual meaning of the lyrics. Pentatonix never loses the meaning of a song. "The neon god they MADE!" Anger, frustration, being appalled at the idolatry of the wrong things. It's all there in those two words with the emphasis on the second.

    You are a true musician and vocalist. There are so many “vocalists” doing reaction videos who couldn’t sing themselves out of a paper bag. You have a firm grasp of musical theory and vocal technique, and it’s refreshing to see!
    Regarding Scott’s final solo: I don’t think he modified the vowel much. Instead, I think he sang the diphthong instead of keeping the soft pallet raised throughout. Normally, this will cause some extra strain as it constricts space, and I did hear this slightly for Scott, but he did a great job utilizing his nasal passages to resonate.

  • @barbarabishop9362
    @barbarabishop9362 Před 2 lety +16

    Subscribed. I listen to dozens of reactors, but most of them just say variations on "wow." and "how beautiful" and "I love Mitch." It's extremely pleasing to hear someone who is both knowledgeable and good at communicating that knowledge. :) So, for Pentatonix, you've done the holy trinity (SoS, Hallelujah and Daft Punk) and one modern one. Of the "must see" group you still need Bohemian Rhapsody - it's really incredible and Brian May gave it his nod of approval, which has to mean something.
    The ENTIRE new album "The Lucky Ones" is spectacularly good. And the deluxe version has added five more songs that are just ... I can't. I've run out of superlatives. Even/especially the ones that don't have videos yet - just the visualizer, so you can concentrate on the sounds.
    But really - while there's songs I like better than others, I've yet to hear a Pentatonix song that didn't make me say "wow" and "how beautiful" and "I love Mitch/Scott/Kirsten/Kevin/Avi/Matt." And then there's the side projects like Superfruit (Scott/Mitch) and solo albums by each member. One a week? Jesus. Even at one a day you'd have almost a year lined up. Have a good run at this rabbit hole. You'll like it. :)

    I so appreciate your perspective man, different than anything I've seen.
    I feel like Scott's deeper range has grown with time and that's explored more since Matt has come in, especially with Matt's high range. Like notably that was where he was during Matt's verse here I think. It's cool to me the freedom that gives to both of them.

    • @Duke00x
      @Duke00x Před 2 lety +5

      Scott has been working on his range for years now (they all have which is kind of scary being they started with large ranges to begin with) plus male voices automatically get a little deeper as they age.

    You have a unique perspective. A perspective that lends itself specifically to this genre...and you know what you're talking about. It's refreshing to get academic/knowledgable reactions, not just unsubstantiated opinions often limited by knowledge/experience. (Which is fine too, but this is more) You'll keep climbing with the subs if you keep doing what you're doing.

      There's an Italian guy that reviewed 3 PTX songs (including this one, Amazing Grace and one other) that is also extremely knowledgeable, but if you're mono-lingual like me, you need to read the sub-titles. Happily, whoever did them did a really good job. He also pointed out a ton of things I wouldn't notice. I wish I could provide a link. (goes looking.... 10 minutes later - you'd be friggin' AMAZED at how many SoS reactions are out there...)

    No offense to Disturbed, but I much prefer this version. I feel that this song is particularly effective because of the contrast between the dark lyrics and the lighter, almost joyful melody (the orignal S&G version especially). The Distrubed version completely loses that and although it's good, it creates a completely different effect.

      I so much agree with you. Sorry people, but I don't care for the Disturbed version, probably bc I grew up hearing this song from it's beginnings....so Pentatonix gets it...it is a contrast in the music and lyrics. Such an amazing song in it's own right.

    • @KAMIIKAZEExx
      @KAMIIKAZEExx Před rokem +3

      Lead singer of disturbed is a classically trained vocalist.
      To each their own, but you can’t deny his voice. It’s different and if you don’t like Disturbed more, that gritty style just isn’t your favourite period more than likely.
      The song isn’t meant to be happy.
