Hi Tara đ„ș
Would love to see your reaction to Poets of the Fall (Any of their Alexandra Theatre session songs) Angel is amazing :
u are awesome wish i wouldn't have fried my voice or id take you up on some lessions
Woo
How do I know what is my vocal range
is nobody going to mention that Matt drops a whole octave in one beat??
Holy shi* I just noticed that is insane.
That's really pretty common with bass notes. :)
Matt dropped a whole octave in one beat
First thing I've noticed.
Dropping octaves is actually one of the easier intervals, especially when you practice part singing a lot. You learn to audiate the difference between octaves very naturally. Harder intervals would be 7ths or 6ths.
I knew Scott could sing bass but Jesus that was impressive
What would you expect for a baritone?
ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ I donât really know tbh, but just occasionally hearing him like that in the background was not enough of a hint for me I guess.
@@graffititurtle11 Yes it's been a long time, forgive me.
I'm a baritone to top tenor. I am thoroughly impressed by Scott's range. Don't be put off by know-it-all trolls.
@@tillthedawn Some baritones can't hit that low. I'm a baritone, and I was impressed by Matt's range
somebody has to replace Avi
4:45 "So good let's listen again" That's it. That's Pentatonix
Yes totally sums up all PTX performances đ
That little "hey Kevin" when he started beatboxing đđ
I know đ€Ł
Lol
My personal favorite part is Matt octave drop on sound during his solo. She didn't say anything about it and my mouth was hanging open đ
Kaylee Hooper SAMMEEEEEEEEE
She heard him when after he dropped, but yes, she completely skipped the drop
Totes. Favourite part of the song by far!
Exactly that is one of my favorite parts...
SAME
Scott In Halleluja: Mitch has a competitor
Scott in Sound of Silence: Matt has a competitor
Respect your opinion but the whole group feeds on Matt now...
@@davelopez7097 ? explain
Mitch have no competitor,he is pure high notes ,Scott have a wide range but not as wide as Mitch, but Scott can sing deeper than matt
@@severusreynolds5247 No actually, Scott cannot sing deeper than Matt, otherwise Scott would be the "new" bass man in Pentatonixđ. So does for Mitch, he cannot "sing" higher than Bb5. From that aspect, Scott do have the widest range in PTX, at least that's what himself, Mitch and Avi said in some interviews years ago. I believe from their understanding, vocal range = the notes you can apply into singing. If let the vocal range = any pitch you can hit, then I don't think thier vocal range will be so impressive for so many people. Because many people can shout or squeak a really high pitch sound, or bubble a quite low note. But when it comes to singing, everyone knows that there is no way somebody can sing so beautifully at that high as Mitch or at that low as Avi.
Scott also was singing Avi'd part during his solo
Kirstin is so so bright and sounds so "full" in her part, just gorgeous. Mitch is obviously flawless and clean and just to die... Scott and Matt both SHOWING OUT in this. Some of the best stuff they've ever put out
And of course Kevin is still killing it
She's gotten so much better over the years. Idk what it is but she's so much more clear and better sounding the last couple years. Love her voice.
@@HB-ey2dk She's more confident now too thanks to her broadway show. She has improved a hella lot, love her. đ
She to me is the anchor to that group. Yes there are incredible voice, but she is just outstanding pulling them together.
Iâm glad you recognized Kirsten, she seems to get little attention
They all killed it but Kirstin's part was my favorite! So powerful and beautiful!!
Can't agree more! She's always been amazing, but she's also progressed so much and is so confident now!
her and Scott in the middle gave me chills!
@@Rosannasfriend What about Matt?
Agreed!
agree! i love it too
... her voice is my all time favorite...
What I love about Matt is he always looks like he's just happy to be there.
this sums him up i love it đ
As someone with ADHD and Asperger's, emotional logic is a concept, I can't completely grasp. The reason I watch you and no other, is because you explain why they made, the choices they have made logically. You use the logic of the English sentence structure and linguistics to explain why certain notes hit a consonant or vowel and I can follow that. I am in tears every video you post because with your explanations, I can grasp emotional connotation. Thank you so much, for your patience and technically impartial critiques. Thank you again, because of you, I understand musicality logically.
Amen :)
Wow đź. That was the deepest thing I think Iâve ever read on CZcams, legit.
what a beautiful comment!
lol dork
slimydick23 Dude what the heck? ADHD and Aspergers are serious disorders, donât call someone a dork because they have them. Iâve seen you before, you tend to comment some odd stuff. Seriously, think before you comment. Be kind.
Finally got to hear Matt... Impressed.
New Rules x Are You That Somebody and Attention. If you listen with earphones especially, but even if you donât, youâall hear him! đ
1:25 LOL! That was my reaction when I first heard the beginning of this song too! I was like, "whaaaa??? Scotty going in the basement!" :P
hah BASment xD
@@ponyoponyo576 bass but its ight i see what you two did there
When I first heard the start of the song, I did a double take because at first I thought it was a guest shot of Avi. Matt is good, but I still miss Avi.
theonlymoo5e, that wasnât Matt, either. That was Scott!
@@DennisKovacich I know that, but what I was referring to was that I think Avi has a larger vocal range from what I've heard so far compared to Matt. It was obvious that it was Scott when I looked up at the video from my desk
3:15 hey Kevin đ
One of the things that makes Pentatonix so special to me is their diction and annunciations are so clear and crisp (you can understand the words to everything they sing)
as a side note there's the backstory to the song (yes I'm that old that I remember when it first came out. anyway here ya go
What is the story behind the sound of silence?
'The Sound of Silence' by Simon and Garfunkel is a song written in the 1960's about the extent to which people suppressed their true views about the Vietnam War. The poetic voice is the poet himself and it is through his vision that we are made aware of the great disappointment that he feels at the peoples inability to say what is on their minds.
Your reaction at 1:25 with Scott and 5:42 with Matt are EXACTLY the same, and it made me laugh so hard - stupidly so. Fantastic reaction!
Thats true
hahaahhahahaha
I am so glad someone else caught that besides me!!! Scott is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about Scott doing the bass part when Matt is singing lead?? Amazing range!!!
His range is literally superhuman
His range is larger than my
Love for Jesus Christ can I get an amen?
@@dylanbardin965 it's above average, that's about it lol.
Scott is super human
he actually did in hallelujah as well when avi had his singing part.
I would say that the Disturbed version of this is ominous, but this one is defiant and even hopeful. Both are incredible renditions of the original (which is great in its own regard). Thanks for reacting to them both!
Exactly! I love both versions, and both are incredible in their own way. Even my mother (who listens to nothing 'modern' and only oldies/country/Elvis loves Disturbed's version and really enjoyed Pentatonix's version, too.
Well said
Your analysis is so spot on!
Yes, both are great while being so different versions. Or maybe that's why they are both so great. Disturbed's version is quite dark, anxious even and this builds up to a sort of "gospel choir uplifting praise" style.
I guess thr reason why both versions work is that they have the passion and emotion in it. The lyrics include emotions in them and after hearing Disturbed covering this I realised that S&G originally didn't get everything out from this. But of course we have to remember that time wouldn't have been ready for Disturbed's style version. And I'd think that this choir type thing wouldn't have gotten much attention either.
dude that's literally no comparison but the fact that it's the same song. It's an acapella operatic-like group versus a metal solo vocalist, I don't get why y'all even bringing this up
Kirsten is the most underrated member, her high register cuts through the harmony and anchors the high range with a pure, bright female tone. Mitch's counter tenor is amazing too but he's on the falsetto side whereas Kirsten is a bit more natural and pure. Mitch can shine in certain ranges where a high, almost electronic sound is required like Blinding lights and Daft Punk but Kirsten is so rich and solid with her forward voice.
Scott is the next underrated, his tone and expression is so rich and smooth, he switches from a softer raspy subdued tone to a rich forward placement effortlessly as well as filling in as bass when Matt or Avi is singing.
I don't think any of them are underrated to be honest, everyone knows how awesome they all are
@@ben6993 Sure most people do but there's a tendency to hype up Mitch I've noticed.
I'm super impressed by Kirstie's vibrato but nobody ever mentions it lol. She shined in this song. Soooo good.
My personal favorite part of this cover is the arrangement. It is very smart. A great example of how smart it is can be seen in Mat's verse. On the line voices never shared, there is no way Mat would sound good on the high A in that line. Giving that line to Mitch while Mat took the harmony was a very smart idea.
Firewall Dragon yes!! agreed!
There is nothing more beautiful than a cappella vocals done by people with beautiful voices! You get to hear the human voice used, not only for delivering the lyrics, but also as musical instruments.
Pentatonix is an example of how to have succes with talent and hard work. These people don't need a band or instruments, because all they need are THEIR VOICES! Every time i listen to them, i have goosebumps. They are fantastic!
Matt's got such an amazing range (Mitch too, love them all but Matt always impresses me)
Right!
Their video is basically what the last few minutes of earth would look and sound like before the apocalypse hit. It's like they are so into it that they are like singing for their lives. Like someone has a gun to their heads. Just so much passion. I always say if you are gonna sing, sing with your whole being or not at all because I don't want to hear a flat performance of a powerful song. I want to feel the song not hear it. I felt this song. I felt it a lot to the point that it nearly gave me an existential crisis. Love your reactions to them as well Tara. Love your analysis and how you break down the technical side of it all. I would love you to react to more PTX videos and maybe stuff that ate side and solo projects from individual members of the group.
True, im a singer, and my parents always told me to sing with my all.
But im not literally doing what they say, im also doing it for myself, because i also want to really feel the song and its message
Please react to their cover of Gold. Itâs live and Mitch is amazing.
Yes. The Kiiara cover for Gold.
Its amazing!!!â€ïž
YESSS
I have to agree. Sooo good.
Yes please!
I found Pentatonix several months ago. I just discovered you tonight. With everything that has happened these past twelve months, I consider these two blessings. My life just got a little better. Thank you.
Can we talk about Scott's bass while Matt's singing solo?! đ
I wish you talked a bit about that vibrato on those crazy high notes that Mitch and Kirstie belted. That's hard, and rare to hear!
Thats cuz she talks a lot about those in other videos
I've never been able to drop vibrato from those notes. It's interesting how people are surprised by hearing it.
Notice that Scott was singing bass during Mattâs part. I think that was really cool!
Y..e..s!!
That's right, cause Matt's a true baritone...
Scott always did this even with Avi. Check out Carrol of the Bells and you can see he's doing it while Avi is singing. Also during most times when Avi, or now Matt, are singing.
7:45 "Yaaas unisonnnn" was the cutest thing I've seen her do
Itâs probably my burgeoning âget of my lawnâ old man mindset, but I lose respect for anyone who honestly says âyaaasâ
I wish more people appreciated Scott taking over the bass role when Matt has his solo lmao
You are so very correct. Their arrangements are S.I.C.K. Then add in the talent and hard work every one of them brings to the group, and it's no wonder that when they do a song, 99% of the time, it's incredible. They have an amazing ability to wring out the emotion from every song they do: Joyous, sad, dance beat, whatever. You. Will. Feel. It.
I will say though that out of the original and remakes of this song, I like Disturb's the most, but this version is still (as you show us) a master-class of how to sing right.
Scott's bass! Kirstin has improved so much. She had some bad technique habits up until fairly recently that she's obviously been working on eliminating with an experienced vocal coach. I haven't seen her infamous side-jaw in ages. Great reaction and analysis as always Tara!
Nope, itâs because she had a vocal coach working with her for her solo Album. That was when it disappeared! I kinda miss it, but it wasnât good for her singing...
I read somewhere that she was born with something that caused it and she got rid of it with surgery
@@dadadunlol6079 yes, she was born with a cleft Palate

Your reactions are not just reactions - they're educational sessions. Notes about phrasing, about tone, about stylistic choices and arrangement choices, about embouchure. Really great stuff!
I am far from a musician or even further...
but I came here to find out if I am dreaming with the perfection I hear from Pentatonix.
You explained it perfectly even for my low knowledge of music you made it very clear to me. Thank you

As a person who's not a singer it's really interesting to watch these videos and it makes me appreciate what Pentatonix does even more...
Oh I'll definitely be fangirling over and listening to Pentatonix for the next months... Especially over Christmas it's even appropriate for me to put the music on loud without risking people frown at occasionally added christmas songs... C:
I would love it if you could react to the Penatonix cover of Gold. It is done in a "live" session and is fantastic as always.

Iâve been waiting since Feb 15 for you to do this reaction. For me, this was Kirstinâs best performance to date. But my favorite moment in the song, and this may sound funny, is Scott coming through on a amazing note above everyone else on the very last âSoundâ at the end of the song. Gives me chills. IMHO, this is PTXâs best cover yet. đ
The +4! Also just visually, he's standing in the middle, which matches where his note sits in the chord. It's pretty great.
Truly one of their best arrangements to date and I get CHILLS everytime Scott sings his verse at the end. I find the analysis of their vocals fascinating and truly enjoy your channel. Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece. It is my favorite arrangement they have put out since Matt joined the group. đ„°
I hear something new every time I listen to this song. Today, itâs the backup (Kirsten, I think) who emphasizes the word âlightâ immediately after Mitch says âflash of the neon lightâ
Sounds like, âflash of the neon light-liGHTâ that split the night. So beautiful.
The Official Video is the only version available right now. There should be live versions available once they start their tour, as I expect this song to be one of the highlights of their setlist.
The unison, harmony, unison ending was great as well as Scott's use of his lower register in this song.
scottâs first note really makin me feel some typa way everytime i listen to this-
This reminds me of the PTX / Dolly Parton collaboration on Jolene. I've loved Pentatonix since their early CZcams days. They're amazing. When I watched Jolene and heard how much Parton brought to the song over and above them... I never really appreciated Dolly Parton (a legend most popular before my time) until seeing that contrast.

Please react to the official video of Superfruit's (Scott & Mitch) cover of "The Promise" originally performed by the UK pop band "When in Rome" back in 1988. Both aurally and visually it has a fantabulous '80s pop feel.
Their version of Say Something is one of my favorites. It's incredible.
Kristin's part have me chills. She's amazing đđđ
Kirstin, Mitch, Scott, Matt, Kevin! They are amazing! Best cover for me!
The passion in your reaction Tara believe it or not, brought me to shed a few tears. When your passion for music comes out with that much excitement. Well makes me happy cause I feel that way to.. Brothers and sisters in music. PTX took me too church.
I went to one of their concerts. IT WAS THE BEST THING IN THE WORLD. I really hope you got to go to one of them and see them live. Best experience of my life.
I really recommend headphones for Pentatonix and Home Free to really appreciate the bass. Yes, it messes up your hair but the experience is worth it. Trust me.
YES!!!!!! Could you react to either Pentatonix Natural Disaster live or Avi Kaplanâs Overtone singing?
What?
Omg that low tone of Avi still gives me chills đ»đ
Thank you-- I feel like Scott is sometimes underappreciated. Great reaction!!
I truly donât think that anyone in PTX is under appreciated anymore and I donât think Scott ever was.
From the Sing Off, he was put forward as the spokesperson and did the majority of the lead songs, but from a Pentaholic perspective, I have witnessed when we all started to appreciate each of them individually.
We were wowed by Mitchâ Voice first. Then Avi. Always Scott then, one day we started to pay attention to what Kevin was doing and were So Amazed! Finally, people who formerly stated that Kirstin was the weakest link, woke up and saw the amount of work she was doing to make the harmony sound flawless, and her solo projects boosted her confidence, then began to see/hear how amazing her voice is too AND appreciate her range, no one on this group is under appreciated, because they are all SO FABULOUS!
Now Matt is here. We have already had glimpses of his range, the soulful rich melody of his voice and of course his Bass notes. There is so much more to look forward to with him, but theyâre ALL fully appreciated for what they do and how they do it! I love that they all get a chance to vocally shine in songs! Thatâs what makes them so good. They work together really well and that shows too!
Pentatonix is an amazing group that no one is underestimating or under appreciating!
(Sermon over). đđ€
@@caroleceres Great analysis of the team
Their harmony is just out of this world
If you haven't dont it already, you should do Pentatonix's Run to You. The harmonies are so, so gorgeous, and the song itself is so emotional and beautiful.
Hi Tara - you said the same thing that I think many of us said with this - "Welcome to PTX, Matt!!!" He absolutely established himself here as belonging in the group, stepping out of Avi's shadow. Another point to make - *holy crap* have Kirstin's vocals matured(?) or evolved(?) recently...wonderfully evident here. Wow!
Loved your reaction as always!
"The perfect little bow on the most beautiful package" Great description!!!
You can REALLY tell how much Kirstin has been working on her tone. So much more rich and full sounding in this one than the thin but pretty tone shes always been known for. Love ittttt
I've seen them live twice, once when they first started touring and again last year. I highly recommend it. They are every bit as good live as they are in canned videos.
I have been waiting for your reaction to this one! đ I know you're going to break it all down and I really like it cause I learn about the techniques they're using. I noticed them going to and holding out the "N" instead of the vowel. I just didn't know what it was about.
I noticed that Scott didn't do one single riff or run, and I actually liked that choice for this number.
I'm so glad you said that Matt fits in well with the rest of the group, and welcomed him! Earlier I heard a reactor say that Matt doesn't fit in with them, and he wished he'd leave. đ I thought that was an awful thing to say and completely untrue. I educated him on the error of his ways... he doesn't even know what he's talking about. YOU, however DO know what you're talking about, and you said Matt fits in well in the group!
thank you for a lovely breakdown of the techniques and choices they made!
Please do âSound of Silenceâ and âBlack is the Color or my True Loves Hairâ -both by Peter Hollens official videos please!

As someone who went to an overly-snobby classical voice school, I am thoroughly impressed with your attention to detail, both vocally and artistically. You're clearly paying attention to everything without dumbing it down for the audience, and I absolutely love that. Definitely subbed.
Your reactions are always so genuine and youâre so insightful in the way you speak.
Please please please react to their cover of Gold. It's incredible. You should react to more of their older ones - their more "popular" ones.
Great reaction Tara! I liked how this video featured Scott starting off in his lower register and then Matt and Kirstin singing in their higher registers. Lots of pleasant surprises. As for Mitch and Kevin, ... what can I say? Their talent shines through on this video as it does on every video. All together PTX is a formidable package. Loved it.
Anyone gonna talk about the fact that Matt near the start made background noise for a whole like, 25 seconds without breathing
I went to a Pentatonix concert for the 1st time last summer. They are truly "off the chain"! One of the few groups that sound better live than recorded! Definitely going to another one next time they're in town!
Every time I hear pentatonix I tear up and end up crying. I feel the music on an emotional and physical level. The only other time this happens for me is with classical music. Simply amazing. Always.
What a disservice!!
When Matt closed his verse and dropped from a natural voice to super deep all you said was "wow".
More like *WOW* Freakin' flawless!! :)
Edit: the way you react at the end with mouthing the lyrics and flailing your arms is how I react everytime I hear this song except staring @ 0:01
Rob Hodge, I saw another vocal coach react to this video, and she didnât even say that much about Matt dropping that octave. I suspect she might have missed it because she was commenting on something before it. I mentioned it in a comment on her video, but she hasnât replied.
I couldn't agree more. It was Matt earning his bass chops. He's been welcomed into the Pentaholic family, but that drop takes him out of the "give him a chance", and puts him squarely in the "I deserve this" category.
He's no AVI! :)
@@Dextergec413 That's a nonsense statement on several levels.
1.) Everyone loves Avi, for sure, but even Avi would congratulate Matt on a phenomenal job. His voice is absolutely to be touted.
2.) A drop from high to low like that is a tremendous skill and anyone who can perform at that level is certainly par for the others in the group.
3.) To speak anything less than glowing remarks about Matt is a slap in the face of the rest of the group. They chose him. They know, as a group, what they needed; the character and skill sets that would most surely fill that space.
Matt Salle is an outstanding performer with the right energy and pipes worthy of being a member of Pentatonix.

I freakin love your reactions to pentatonix. We feel you gurl. We feel you.
please react to citizen queen as well it is a girl acapella group put together by scott
Remember the Grammy Award winning "Pentatonix" are a Capella. No Instruments, NONE. every thing you hear is vocal only. Just amazing. I do wish their old bass singer would come back in. Low F# !!!!! Each one of these 25 year old kids can knock it out of the park. Oh, yeah, they do all their own arrangements and have since they won that Sing Off, TV contest program when they were all 19 years old. Their best song? Bohemian Rhapsody or the incredible Dog Days are Over, maybe the song SONY awarded them a contract for a Daft Punk medley. Then again the Wizard of Ahhhs should have won an award by it self. Look them up, this group is stunning.
So glad I saw your reaction to this, you are the first person who explained the why/how their sound is so awesome without making it about you, just the music.
Absolutely love this cover and hearing you break it down! Goosebumps every time!
Yes! Yes! Yes! I've been waiting for this since you reacted for Disturbed!
I absolutely looooove not just your lovely reaction but how you unpack what makes PTX and others singers awesome. I await for your new videos and learn more from you.
"Yes unison!" It also helps that the main 3 vocalists have known each other since they were kids, so having that connectivity to each other's voices helps with unison. Matt is a wonderful addition to the group as much as we miss Avi! Loved it and your video!
