No it's not the mic, it's his vocal cords.. He was born with autotune in his neck, it's a rare birth trait gifted among God's....
No, he's been heavily tuned.
@@Malc180s He's heavily tuned live? Obviously you've never heard him sing acoustic with no mic, he sounds the same..... Dude's got an epic voice, that's the bottom line. Accept it...
@@nikpodojil6315 I'm not going to accept a lie.. It's clear for all to hear. Of course it's tuned. And that's fine. Most music you listen to has an autotuned vocal - it makes sense. Rather than striving for the perfect performance, rhythm, feel, tone AND pitch, let the singer enjoy themselves, get a great vocal, and fix any pitchy-ness it in a fraction of the time.
Malc180s really... like seriously

David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. David Draiman is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.
Source?
It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. Most TV performances will not even allow for a completely live take. Too many things that can go wrong.
As for how much he hates auto tune... well.. the studio recording of the song has auto tune clear as day on it, so...
@@WeissAdvice there's a difference between autotune and mastering. In this rendition the autotune was for a split second not really the whole song. Also he is on record being pissed about it.
I commend him for this performance due to how sick he was
If you listen close you can detect the corrections. But in two spots you can hear his voice crack because of the bronchitis. Amazing he was able to do this well as sick as he was. Listen to the official video and you'll hear his perfect multi-octive voice go from the basement to the roof without a fault. And without being tuned. Beautiful.
When a vocal coach says" oh I know this song" after a minute of a masterpiece like the sound of silence........i mean.... Really!!!!
I think she was kidding... or at least I hope.
I know. Like, seriously?
Nah she knew. I think she said it in the reaction to pentatonix’s cover of this song.
I had the same reaction, like Oh wow! what a surprise! But I do hope she was just kidding
Right
It was said from another reactionary commentary within a post, and I quote, "Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning. Disturbed's version is rage because the warning was ignored."
This is the best description I've ever read

He is phenomenal, he was classically trained which allows him to do a lot of his harder vocals in metal without injury. One of the greatest vocalists ever.

yeah, unlike Serj Tankian
who would do all of the harder vocals without having that much train and ended up with a chicken voice.
David knows exactly what he is doing with the fry. He trained with a vocal coach. In fact he still trains with his vocal coach. David started his musical career as a Cantor like his famous great grandfather. Watching this incredible man do interviews is fascinating. He also champions the cause of mental health awareness. I adore him. Btw Disturbed is a heavy metal band.
He's was classically trained. Turned heavy Metalist.
This man is a most gifted singer. He is classicly trained and this is the most beautiful version of this song ever!
True. So very true!
pentatonix did it better🤷🏽♂️
Even Paul Simon approved of this version of his song....
@@malachithomas1 I'm a huge Pentaholic, but no...they didn't. Their version was great, but it didn't have the darkness and emotion that is one did.
sandpiperr the song doesnt even get good until his “people writing songs”. it was just boring until that point then it started to become more powerful. he’s a good vocalist and great at using vocal frying and all. but with pentatonix the complex harmonies, and the bass line, and the fact that they DONT USE INSTRUMENTS makes it all the more powerful. yeah the orchestra he had with him sounded AMAZING but they sounded equally AMAZING without the orchestra 😂😂.
anyways.. all in all,
this version was better for “emotion”
pentatonix’s was better vocally
Fun fact, he had the flu and fever when he made this performance.
It’s weird to react to this video n not the original video where he outperform himself! This one when he was sick is not the best of him!
Hence the auto tune. He HATED that he was forced to use auto tune.
Another vocal coach that did this caught that and she said it sounds like he might have a cold or something in his throat. How they can hear that is beyond me.

She’s trippin. Damien has an incredible voice, I can’t believe she had the audacity to say “auto tune”.

Guys just because he's a great singer doesn't mean the mic or mix doesn't have pitch correction in it. The fact that he's an amazing singer is why you never hear it doing anything except in that one small moment. Let's not mistake her pointing that our for saying he need autotune to hit pitch.
I almost died at the "there's a real rock quality to his voice" comment.

If I didn't know who Disturbed was, never heard anything by them, no idea of what actual genre of music they perform, I would be impressed by his vocal range and ability. Especially singing Sound Of Silence. In all honesty, when I was first told I had to go listen to their rendition of this song, knowing who Disturbed is, I was incredibly impressed and became an even bigger fan of Disturbed. I can see where the confusion came into play with Tara. I perform a lot of country music, but then I'll go into a few songs of Journey or Puddle Of Mud and I get extreme reactions.
I CANNOT listen to this cover of the song without tearing up 😭 it sooooo good
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.

He is insanely talented
Wait seriously he sang Opera? That makes a lot of sense now
@@EngelWulf yes, he is classically trained
Classical and metal (Vocally anyway) have a lot in common.
David is not and never was, an opera singer. He was trained as a Cantor in a Jewish faith school. There are some parallels in the training, but they're completely different vocal styles.
He trained with Melissa Cross who has a background in opera.

David Draiman is a classically trained singer and has an amazing sound and range. Disturbed is a phenomenal metal band. Really enjoyed your take on his performance. David was actually under the weather for this performance and yes the producers added autotune without him wanting it. He never uses it. He was irked.
It is such a pity when live performances are ruined by autotune... People do not understand that singing isn't flawless. Every video on youtube where singer is using extreme singing (belting, whistle, distortion...) and is perfect is heavily processed and either lipsynced or autotuned. There is just no way anybody can lay a perfect vocals on hard songs in 1 take. There is always gonna be some bad timing or flat/sharp note or vibrato flaw or something... Hiding these flaws puts unspeakable pressure on newcomers. I do not understand why these vocal coaches do not react only to unmiced performances of singers. Makes much more sense... He was oprea trained to begin with and has the flu during this performance. He is AWESOME
Denver Watts that’s false. He was trained by his grandfather who was a great Cantor at his synagogue. David actually studied Jewish law and such before he was kicked out. But he does have an operatic quality to his voice so I can see where you may have thought he was opera trained. He definitely was sick during this performance and yes he still killed it cuz the show must go on right? He also has an issue where a repair done to his vocal chords has failed so no he essentially gets acid pouring into his vocal chords. He now changes how he eats and when and how he sleeps. But it has effected his range. He just works through it now to still achieve epicness

She's clearly full of herself
thank you for that bit of info. I learn something new everyday
More so when she's on her CZcams channel complimenting him like you would a child.... as he sings on TV for millions...
I did not know that
@@jrlomy2k no, she's just giving her unbiased opinion and explaining what he does and why he does it without knowing him. I mean I never knew about disturbed until recently because I was looking for covers of this exact song.
David has been singing heavy metal for probably more than 30 years he has complete control over his secondary Folds. If you listen closely you can literally hear him from word to word using them and then not using them
He was sick on this show. He does not use auto tune. He just has the true talent and classical training to pull this off live.
If I remember correctly, David said, in an interview, that when his group first thought of doing Sound of Silence, he did not yet have the vocal skills to make it work. It was a few years later that they did the song.
Scott M look at Anneliese Michel 6 demons in rock
Scott M the man is a true artist! 🙌🤘🏻
Wow. I didn't know that. That's a sign of a true artist - practicing to get better when you are already incredible.
His name is David Draiman. I've known him personally for about 14yrs now. No, he doesn't use auto-tune. He and I have had many convos about music as I'm a drummer and singer in a metal band. He has a phenomenal voice. However, this particular show (against his initial protests) they did add a slight auto-tune to his voice. Apparently they do that with all the people who go on to make sure it's a totally clean and smooth performance. All his other shows and performances, it's all him. Dave has such a great range crazy voice control. Tara Simon is an absolutely amazing vocalist herself. I've seen many of her videos and such. All those freaking out and making rude and disrespectful comments need to grow up. She was pointing out what she heard and noticed. As is HER JOB! Read the name of the video genius's. She's a professional and the fact that she can catch those little things shows how good she really is so kudos for that. This was a good video and I'm now subscribing.
Exactly! You said it best, Tara Simon ROCKS it out of the park!
You lucky man to know a legend like draimen he's seems like a genuine person.
"Geniuses" does not require an apostrophe.
People that can't take constructive criticism are people that will continue to do things wrong until the end of time.
There is always room for improvement. No matter what you do, sing, play an instrument, or build a car. It's the people that are always listening, learning and improving that will get to the top of whatever profession they are in.
This has always been a favorite song of mine. Was blown away at this cover. They hit the nail on the head. I could think of one or two more Simon amd garfunkel covers they would probably slay. Have a whole new respect for him after this. Really shows his range
this song was played by a trumpeter at my friend's funeral a month ago. I will always associate with him. one of the finest performances
If you listen to anything else by Disturbed you will definitely hear massive vocal fry and the power of his voice. This is probably one of the best covers of a song I've ever heard, and even though he is a singer of a metal band, his classical training easily comes through. Great reaction and insight.
Brian Connelly, Queensryche.. Scarborough Fair.
Try Zombie by Bad Wolves
not many covers do a song justice. This one surpasses the original. He puts so much feeling in it
Not metal
Seen him sing live; exactly the same sound. He’s just incredible
Snap. Seen them couple years ago. This near had me in tears...
Seen them live a couple times, ALWAYS on point!
Awhile back Ozfest down by Berdoo, getting down with the sickness
Amy Asbury I saw him sing this at Alexandria palace and he was absolutely incredible
I seen hail storm and Lizzy sounded the same as well. She was amazing
Hon, Dave has been singing like this possibly for as long as you have been alive. Nobody coaches this man's voice 🤣
Why are you people so weirdly obsessive about this? Calm down.
I seen other comments on different react videos of Disturbed The Sound Of Silence, saying there is a bit of auto tune in the microphone, BECAUSE he has a cold. The comments also said he didn’t want it, but the producers wanted him to have the auto tune. He still killed it! His voice is amazing!
The last “...of silence...” always gives me the chills down my spine.
His voice is powerful and this is one of the songs he sings that shows it the best, I believe (I’m a Disturbed fan so I know the rest of their work).
About the reaction, I like it very much. It seemed really spontaneous and she seems like a talented professional.
I heard someone describe it as like a single tear falling.
01:16 "Ooh-I know this song!"
That shows how original this cover is
Yes. He made it his own but while still keeping it recognizable. Inf....ingcredible!!!
A lot of times people don't realise they know a song 'til it gets to the chorus - or until it gets to the part where it says the title, oftentimes that being the chorus.
@@madhatressadastra8267 Maybe its the age of the listener but the opening line, "Hello darkness, my old friend" gave it away for me. I really don't know how she does not recognize that first line.
I love his version of this song. It’s so powerful.
I've gotta be honest - I love their cover of this song so much that I just wanna slap you every time you pause the video to talk about it. lol
😂😂
I love it! So do I honey! I am offended every time she opens her trap.
Well, go and look for the complete song and not a reaction video!
@@carlostavares6972 X2
Lmao!!!
We need David Draiman's reaction to this video
@DrLarynx then her reaction of him reacting and so on
A reaction to her trying to pull off this song
All I hear is OH AH AH AH
People have claimed he used autotune. He did not. But he was sick during this performance.
there is a bit that had autotune but the moment they used and got rid of it you can tell by his face like he did not like it and had a go at them afterwards for even using it as he hates autotune.
Love the way you break thing down. Don't really sing myself but love all kinds of music awesome job and ty.
New title. “Vocal coach” realizes she’s listening to one of the top songs ever made sung by one of the greatest vocalists of all time and says “oh I know this song!” Facepalm
It's very possible she's never heard of Simon and Garfunkel, not everyone knows every song. BTW the actual song (originally sang in 1964) probably predates her birth I think, She doesn't look 45-50. BTW I'm 50 (born 1970) and never heard the song until the Disturbed cover, just wasn't in the music I listened to. Not meant to be condescending, just saying it doesn't matter if she just caught the song or not
@@crazylarryjr she’s a vocal coach!
My reaction exactly.
@@crazylarryjr I'm from Germany and in my 30s and everybody here knows that song. I have no idea how an American vocal coach got around it but then again my piano teacher never heard of Metallica... 🤷🏽♂️
@@Nunyabizn3ss being a vocal coach doesn’t mean you’ve listened to every single song in all existence. And some might know the song but not what it’s called.
Me: Clicks on video to hear a professional opinion about how Draiman sings
Also me: Gets irritated every time she stops the song to talk
🤣😂🤣
I absolutely loved watching your reaction to this! Your face was a picture! Hope you figured out what's going on with his chin..🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂 FR
@@traceymay2269 I also hope she learned that he is Jewish, so his having snakebites is a bit unorthodox/controversial.
@Be Ri Not all Jewish people are Orthodox Jews. That would be like saying all Christian people are Catholic.
That is David Draiman from Disturbed and he is an amazing vocalist and yes they are a hard rock/metal style band. That grit you are talking about he does a LOT of in their normal songs. This is completely different than what they normally do.
New to your channel and a new subscriber and I have to say I’m really enjoying your videos and I’m finding them very informative ❤️
He's a metal vocalist, if you haven't looked that already. That's why he's so good with the rasp/double tone in his voice. That's part of his schtick. He's honestly one of the most talented vocalists in the metal scene.
He does have opera training.
Agreed.
Just his range in this alone, is mind blowing. Just because of the band he's in, I was waiting for the drop. He's superb
@@ianpilkington2037 he sure is.
Him and howard jones
No, that’s his voice. Davids voice is absolutely amazing. They are a metal band.
Yeah and David was trained
Not sure if you were aware, but David is a classically trained vocalist, which probably provides him the ability to give that raspy tone without harm. By the way, those are piercings through his lower lip. ;-). I would also like to tell you, with no creepy intent, that your eyes are amazing! I'm a photographer and really enjoy looking at peoples eyes.
Now that you mention it, she does have eyes🤣
I wish you would do a reaction to his actual video, in this live version he had a bad case of the flu but refused to cancel the show, and still sounds amazing.
The comments here are just as satisfying as the song itself. I laughed so hard I think it just cured my depression
For real hahaha
I think this performance was even better that the studio recording. Perhaps it's because you can really hear the vocals.
LOL, it's ironic that you said that because this performance was autotuned. If you want to hear his real vocals he did the song live and unprocessed on Australian x factor.
I love Disturbed, they are my absolute favorite band! I love David Draiman and his snake bite piercings. He is an amazingly talented singer. He actually had the flu during this performance, was so dizzy that he had to stay seated during his performance. I've seen them in concert 6 or 7 times and it's the first time I've seen him sit down. As far as the auto tune, that was a production thing, and he was actually really irritated that they used it, he had told them prior to the show not to use auto tune on him, but i guess they figured since almost every other singer needed it, that they were going to use it on him anyways. If you pay attention to his face at the beginning when the auto tune kicked in, you could see a little irritated look on his face for a second.
THE WARNING The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.
I get goosebumps every time I hear this version!
