Paul Simon was 23 when he wrote this song and it is considered a warning to mankind to listen to the pulse of what was ocurring worldwide. David's version is what will happen if we do not heed the original warning. The power and control of his voice comes from him training to be a cantor, and comes from a long line of cantors.

Such a nice breath of fresh air. A reactor that allows the art and artist to really shine. I've seen way too many reactors who think the goal is to upstage the original artist. Almost every time if we viewers are watching a reaction to a singer... we already freaking know the brilliance that's there! We didn't come to see a 4th year violin student tell us what Heifitz did and didn't get right in one of his performances. (I'm not saying you're the equivalent of that 4th year violin student, but a LOT of reactors are.) If I'm sitting with a friend watching a beautiful sunset... the sunset IS even better if I know my friend is savoring it as much as I am. It's WONDERFUL to enjoy something together.... but if my friend starts giving me a breakdown analysis of the subtle shift in tone from reds to rose's to amber and the dynamic impact of a streak of dark clouds... well I'm probably going to tell her or him, "With all due respect... shut the f¥çk up! Your clumsy, pedantic breakdown is like someone who just came in from the barn with shite all over their boots and starts walking around on my cream colored floor to show me what contrast is all about." For students of music, whether amateur or professional, there is ABSOLUTELY the need to do a breakdown of what was so fantastic... but it should be done at the end, as you so rightly did. During the analysis, intersperse comments with a part of the video that you're referring to, no problem. Just not this p1$$1ng all over the art by constant interruptions the way almost every reactor does. The way you did it Peter was perfect! Just perfect! I have only one criticism, but it's not about you. Get a better mic or mixer, or both. Your loud notes when you were singing were way distorted & blown out. Your comments and timing of those comments were spot on, however.

My interpretation of this song, revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
    perspective of the awakened.
    Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
    (awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
    way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
    being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
    aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
    it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

There is a haunting beauty to davids voice when he wants there to be. This was so different from what he and his band usually do that he didn't even know if his band mates would be on board. Thankfully they were or we would have been deprived of this beautiful cover of an already deeply meaningful song.

You are surely correct in what you said, however, everyone who has ever listened to this version entirely captured the meaning and emotion of the time and made it ever more relevant. The fact that Paul Simon didn’t say it was far superior to their version shows his arrogance and ego. Imo of course... and seemingly everyone else on the planet 😆

“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."
