Shoutout to Marcello Bass for predicting this week's reaction! I really enjoyed giving my input and analysis on this iconic a cappella song -- Home Free couldn't have done a better job with it, and what a joy it is to hear Avi joining in on the fun. Avi and Tim sure make a killer bass duo, don't they? Home Free fans have been waiting for me to give Tim his Pit Viper status, and I'm happy to say that he earned it big time here -- have fun watching and keep the suggestions coming!
Ayy
D'ya know the Tim that Tim Foust looks up to? It's Tim Storms (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Storms) with a range of 12 octaves (starting at #G -7),
maybe you should react to him singing "Lonesome Road", a song by late J. D. Sumner. You'll get your bones rattled around
I love the way you sing along with Tim and then just get lost in Avi's voice.😄
Edit: Also, if you want to see someone flip over Avi's flip, check out Mrlboyd's reaction to this. 😈
Right off the top, Tim starts off with a rich voice, but then Avi, oooo Avi, comes in with his velvety, chocolaty rich "and it makes a fiery ring" voice and gives you goose bumps on top of goose bumps.🤗 And then Austin comes in with a breath of fresh air. The beat boxing on this song is EPIC and one of the best in my book. I've heard Tim and Avi have been friends for quite some time and Tim mentored Avi as he was growing vocally. Did you notice Tim and Avi never hit low notes at the same time, they take turns. And the length of Tim's sustain on that last note without breaking or cracking. WOW! Also notice at the end of the song Avi smiles and changes his beanie to a cowboy hat. LOVE IT!!
Tim held that last note for about 15 - 16 seconds...the amount of air needed for that is INSANE ! Others can Hit that note but only for 1 - 5 seconds, Geoff can sustain that note for about 8 seconds but Tim can KEEP it there for just under 20 seconds.
PS: I think you would like the Peter Holien and Tim Faust's version of Misty Mountains , Peter layed down 128 tracks for 64 tracks each Tim was also 2,000 Miles away doing a shoot so he did this on his downtime and at the End of the vid watch his shoulders as the camera is about to be shaken to pices.
Don't know how you got 15 seconds from that last note. Watch the time stamp on the video. It is 8 seconds, at a stretch, 9, but no way near 15. Still extremely impressive, but yea...
@@goldenstreets777 its more than 11 seconds
@@michaelernst3731 13:54 - 14:03.... It is clearly and distinctly from exactly those time stamps. Not sure if you flunked primary school maths or not, but that is nine seconds. And because it starts only a fraction before 13:55 it is probably only 8 and a bit seconds.
Dude, I just came across your content. As someone who has sung my whole life, I have to tell you that your voice is ridiculous. In the best way. You could easily sing any of the stuff you're reacting to. I hope you understand how uncommon that is. Bravo.
You have the best handle ever! Corvid lover here!
@@TheDivayenta thanks so much! Soon it'll be my govt name, too
This is the beauty of Country bass singers; many have a big vocal range, can switch octaves going from chest, mixed, head, and falsetto all without degrading their vocal quality... Tim is truly a master at this.
Can we have an all-bass quartet of you, Avi Kaplan, Geoff, and Tim from Home Free?
YES!!!!
YES!!!!
It would cause earthquakes and tsunamis with the power of the bass tho
I love how smooth Tim and Avi's voices blend toward the end. Absolutely beautiful
Peter.... there is something just soooooo right about a "bass voice" like yours doing a reaction to this song.... please, please do more of these....luvin' it!
Two for the price of one with this song with Tim and Avi. Throw in your great voice and it's a real bass bonanza! ❤️👏
The best cover to hear Tim go from the top of his range to the bottom in a few seconds is Home Free's cove of Do You Hear What I Hear. It is probably my favorite cover by Home Free.
Oh yes I love this also
Another cover where he makes some pretty crazy jumps is the one of "Greensleeves" he did with Peter Hollens.
His cover of Cant Help Falling in Love is a great demonstration of his range too
As the fries say it´s 5 octaves in 5 seconds
Maybe you could do you’re a mean one mr grinch by Voiceplay? A lot of potential pit viper moments in that one
Yes please ! That song was full of contra notes
yes! Geoff goes wild in that one
The original with Thurls Ravencroft can get really deep in that pit thing. Side note Thurls Ravencroft probably did more voices for disney then anyone & also he was original Tony the Tiger voice. He was also the deep voice in the movie South Pacific in the song there is nothing lake a dame.
Or oogie boogie song
On the Sing Off it was this same song that he hit the F1 & made the judges (and probably most of the audience) need to change their underwear when he hits the F1. I love the symbolism of Avi at the end of the song when Tim hits the note and Avi takes off one hat for the other. (Most people don't catch that). LOVE your reactions and technical explanations! As a side note, VoicePlay was in that same season of the Sing Off. The judges had commented that Tim was the only TRUE bass in the competition that season. Geoff Castellucci was technically a baritone that could occasionally hit the lower octaves. AFTER the competition, Tim worked with Geoff & some of the other baritones on how to hit & sustain the low growl notes without hurting themselves. Geoff even says something to that effect on one of his tutorial vids on YT. I would love to hear Avi, Tim and you do some kind of a trio. Y'all could read the phonebook & it would sound amazing! There is just something about a bass voice that makes my heart get all twitterpated.
Keep up the great work. Not sure if you have reacted to Avi's solo Change On the Rise. (I'll go thru your vids to see if you have). If you haven't, that's another one that I think you'll like.
Edit: so I saw that you did the cover of his Change on the Rise (which I LOVED). So I guess wouldn't be a first time hearing reaction. Still think it would be great to hear your technical analysis of it. I love how you break it down for us!
A side note about the hat. The video was shot on their tour managers farm in Minnesota and Chris Rupp had got that hat as a gift from a friend after the sing off show and it was his first cowboy hat (also the one he was wearing in the video) and while they were filming, Chris came up with idea of having Avi put it on at the end to signify him being an official "country singer". The hat was later auctioned off for charity along with some other Home Free memorabilia.
yep agree these guys need to do a collab. I have Avi, Geoff, Tim and then I include Chance, Matt the replacement for Avi. They know each other. Why not a 5 bass song or album?
@@dianaartdent1592 Love that idea. The range each of them have and the awesome control of those velvety voices... YES!!!
@@rebeccafoust2963 Thanks! I have been saying that for like Over a Year now!! It would be so Awesome!!
IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN "MISTY MOUNTAINS" WITH TIM FAUST AND PETER HOLLENS. TIM GOES EVEN LOWER WITH THAT GROWL. HE LITERALLY MAKES THE CAMERA SHAKE.
I saw Home Free live about two years ago, and was sitting in the back under the balcony. With the first bass note Tim hit, I felt that in 4K - my seat was vibrating and my heart shook in my chest. It didn't stop until the end of the show. I'll NEVER forget that feeling!
Late to this party, but for me, Avi's sound is like sitting in a log cabin, with snow falling outside, in front of a fabulous stone fireplace,
sipping the best cup of hot chocolate you have ever tasted...
Even his polyphonic whistle tones are fabulous.
Great analysis! Home Free’s “Folsom Prison Blues” is somehow even more insane; I’d love to see an analysis of that if you’re ok with it!
Man, Tim's runs are insane. I love them so much, effortless and smooth and perfect for the song.
If you are looking for an awesome technically harmonious one, try Home Free's cover of Helplessly Hoping. The only negative I have about that one is that it is WAY too short! It leaves you wanting more!
Fun reaction brother 🔥
Not sure if you already know this, but it is the beat boxer,Adam, is the engineer that puts it all together, as well as the guy who arranges a lot of the songs. He is absolutely amazing!
Avi has such a beautiful tone to his voice, wonderfully smooth and warm ❤
I love their cover of do you hear what i hear. All the vocals are good but tims base and growls are a plenty🌹
There are so many songs from pentatonix and home free to appreciate the arrangements and voices of Tim and of course Avi 🙌🏻. Great reaction!
Ooh, Home Free’s cover of Elvira with the Oak Ridge Boys is incredible, you should definitely check it out if you haven’t already.
Loved in the sing-off version when Austin leans on Tim when he's hitting the last note.
I know it’s a good reaction when it takes me almost 30 minutes to listen to an 18 minute review of a 3 minute song I frequently play on repeat because of all my rewinding for the new stuff.
Hey Peter, when you said that Avi’s bass voice is like warm chocolate, that’s what I always say every time I hear him sing. Glad you noticed that.
I really appreciate your going into details on things bass. I love your reactions!!!
Your comparisons are so colorful, I love it! And thanks for thr cool reaction and analysis.
I only found your channel today, via Pentatonix Sound of Silence. I am very much looking forward to the back catalogue. Thank you so much for the deep insights and expoanations into the techniques that you bring. More words, not less, please!
Watching you sharing one of my favourite songs was a huge treat and I look forward to many more.
And yes, we definitely needed to go back and listen to that note again!
Definitely subscribed.
Love this version and love hearing the double bass singers. I enjoy hearing a bass singers reaction to bass singers.
Your reactions are always wonderful Peter. Plus you also have a really beautiful bass voice yourself. I enjoy just listening to your voice as you talk to us. I've been a follower and subscriber for quite a while now and you never let us down. Thanks and keep going, please.
Love your reactions. Looking forward to the next one.
Avi and Tim’s tone is like melting butter, it’s just so comforting and soft
I LOVE it when you sing with the video, you complement it so well. Another great reaction!! I am going deep into the Peter B rabbit hole tomorrow your voice is so soothing to my stressed out mind at the end of the day. Thank you ever so much for that😊❤️
I've watched so many reactions to this song, and this has to be my favorite! Love how you pointed out Avi's talent but knocked Tim up 2 points! They both sound amazing in this one. Very impressed with how you imitated both of them! First time watching your video, but you can definitely be in either of these groups, your voice is amazing too!
🙏 may the bass be with you
I sang with a group of guys after college who were all baritones, but I don't think I had ever heard a multiple bass arrangement before this. The contrast of two basses with Austin's bright tenor lead is just wonderful.
I'd like to get your take on Home Free's cover of "Folsom Prison Blues" as well. I'm really enjoying the content. Well done sir.
Oooh, me too!
Me too
Yes this please and thank you
Looks like he did it for us!
Home Free still closes out their shows with the last few lines of this song. Those on the front rows can feel the floor vibrating. ❤
Great job Peter! I'm really enjoying your reactions. And I rarely watch other reactors these days (other than Maggie.) I love the double bass here and Adam's beat boxing is phenomenal here. And of course all of Home Free holding this gorgeous rendition down. I look forward to watching more of your content.
i would just like to point out how much fun it looks like bass singers always have when they are doing their thing!! It makes me smile all the time!
Oogie boogie man by Voiceplay!
I would really like to know, how low Tim is going in the live version "Honey I'm good" live version "Tim's vibration".
You should be the best expert to enlight me.
Hope you react to that, it's a little wild.
For me it is G#1, Eb1, C#1.
Really enjoying the breakdowns you're providing! As a soprano, I never really concerned myself much with the bass lines in college choir, and I regret not paying more attention. But I absolutely adore everything Pentatonix! So you've got a new subscriber! Plus, I'm really enjoying hearing you talk and sing 😊
I really don't know this song... but had to hear it because of Avi! His deep voice.... so amazing!
I just stumbled on to your reaction vids two days ago and now I'm hooked, keep up your unique style.😊
Thank you 🙏 Will do!
I still have hopes that Homefree and Avi will collaborate together again at some point. Chance came from Streetcorner Symphony out of Nashville to replace Chris Rupp when he left Homefree and most of Streetcorner Symphony backed Avi on his first short tour when he started singing again after Pentatonix. Kaleb Thomas Jones played guitar backing up Avi before lockdown on tour in 2020 and another member of Streetcorner Symphony, Daniel Ellsworth, has co-writing credit on 2 of Avi's songs "I'll Get By" and "Sweet Adeline pt 2". Finally Avi, Tim and Austin all live around Nashville so it's possible in theory at least. Here is the Behind the Scenes on this collaboration by Chris Rupp.

Love the sliding into the DMs analogy 😂
Would be amazing to hear you do a collab with Avi, both such smooth as butter voices
My fave Home Free cover is Man of Constant Sorrow, if that’s not on your list already… great bass solo followed by further drop, amazing perc/sound effects from both Adams
Wow, I love to listen to your review, especially your beautiful voice. Amazing.
Thanks Peter really Love you reactions and reviews; especially Home Free. I’m learning a lot; so fun!!!! Thanks 🤩
Man, hitting notes like that C2 whatever it is makes me feel like a living subwoofer, but Avi just does it so effortlessly AFTER RIFFING DOWN FROM THOSE HIGHER NOTES. It's so challenging to do that. Granted that's way closer to the bottom of my range than his, but it's still a low note any way you slice it. Honestly though, the thing about this particular arrangement that really sold me was Austin's (I believe that's his name?) intro. Such a good example of a beautiful, warm, powerful-yet-smooth tenor. Man was painting with his voice here. I think what impresses me more about the growl Tim does is less that he's growling a G1 and more that he holds it for so long, powerful and steady lol.
I'm not sure if you're looking specifically for impressive bass recommendations or just good vocal arrangements in general, but I'd definitely recommend Pentatonix singing Hallelujah for a fantastic display of vocals (and a fantastic arrangement) in general and Geoff Castellucci singing Sixteen Tons if you want some ridiculous bass... and a fantastic display of vocals and in general haha. Thanks for the video man. May the bass be with you lmao.
I do understand why people go nuts over Avi's high to low transition in the video, but if you check out any live concert videos of Home Free from 2017-2018, Adam Chance does the exact same thing, every night, effortlessly.
@@pennyeaton904 I believe it, Avi isn't the only fantastic vocalist out there lol. He just happens to be the point of discussion in this particular video. Adam actually doesn't get the credit he deserves sometimes imo. He has one of the most flexible voices out there.
Boom! Even baritones like me can hit that growl note and even lower but I can't hold it so strong and steady forever like he does.
You have a beautiful bass voice! Very soothing to hear you speak also!
Only my second but I'm getting Sooo much from your 'reactions', forcing me to move from 'puppy love at first listen' to a deepening understanding and appreciation of the excellence involved. Thank you, and just 'Wow'.
I loved the way you talked about the two low basses. I feel I learned something. Thanks!
I regularly say that Avi's voice is like a warm chewy fudge brownie. Slightly underbaked, sticks to your teeth, deep and rich and oh so satisfyingly chocolate and slightly bitter and perfectly sweet and full.
Bitter? 😯
@@RosheenQuynh chocolate is extremely bitter if you don't add sugar. I like dark chocolate so a little bitter is not only necessary but desired. And yes avi's voice has a little edge to it, that's the bitter.
@@super_siri 🤔 I never thought about it like that before. To my ears, his voice is hot, milk chocolate! Nothing but warm and sweet.
@@RosheenQuynh his voice has too much substance to be a liquid to me.
@@super_siri Ha, I guess that's why he's like Reese's mixed with hot chocolate for me, I suppose 😂 I just had my hot drink earlier and it actually felt like drinking his bass notes 😆😅
As a former chorus director, I know you don't do it like everyone else, or you get lost in every other version of the same song. I've always changed it up and provided something unexpected. Makes you memorable.
peter this is yr bestest review...u hv somany emotions tht add to yr analysis
Tim Foust gives bass voice lessons. And it's my understanding he has been teaching some of the other bass singers in a cappella groups his technics.
Every time I hear them sing this song I get chill bumps from my head to my toes. I love it.
Id love to see what you think of Voiceplay’s “Oogie boogie song”. Geoff hits some crazy notes and its seriously fun musically.
I'm glad you had so much fun with this reaction 😊
Love your analysis and your bass! Incredible cover!!!💗
❤❤❤ love your reactions. I am learning so much from you ....Thank you 💗💗💗
The growl Tim does on misty mountain With Peter hollens is pretty epic as well
I get a kick out of Avi tipping his hat to Tim when he hits that growl. Another great analysis.
Dude, you have a great voice yourself! 👌👌
Enjoyed your reaction again. Learning your ways. Love your voice too.
I've always been impressed by how long he can hold those crazy low notes. *mind bolown*
One of my favs! Your growl was right on too!!
Please do a reaction of Geoff's sixteen tons!!! 🥺😭
I love how much you’re analyzing the tune!!! I wish I would have found you sooner!!! Home Free is one of it not, my favorite acapela groups
I finally found you on utube on my phone…well you without your hat. I even caught you showing off your beautiful operatic voice. I love your talking voice when you do your reactions. You’re like eye candy! This older woman enjoys looking at ya as well as listening to you. I would love to hear you and Avi do UNDER THE BOARDWALK by the wonderful DRIFTERS. You two would be awesome! Keep up the good work!
Just found your channel. I love how in depth you get, not a lot of people do that. I don't know if you have ever done any barbershop, but two of my favorites are Westminster's Bridge over Troubled Water and Ringmasters Notre Dame Medley. Both live and incredible!! Love your channel bro
That low note was held forever!!!! Sometimes Tim and Chance both do bass in a few songs. Just hits us straight in the face with some low note(s) and you just sit there in amazement
I forget which song it is, but in it there is some fantastic bass work and suddenly you realize that Tim is singing lead and that Chance is doing the bass line.
Great reaction! I agree about Tim's growl. Being a musician for over 40 years I haven't heard a consistent growl that low and long before. I read somewhere Tim actually helped Avi with his voice.
Mayday.
Honey I'm good, LIVE performances!!
Do you hear what I hear.
Man of constant sorrow.
Folsom Prison Blues.
Dig in! 😊
Full body goose bumps on that intro with the two base singers followed by the high tenor. Great stylistic choice.
Hahaha.......It's actually funny how you were nerding out on the growl note at the end, while you can sing the note in chest voice. I'm not a bass at all and I can growl one note at a time and also that ending note but a low chesty bass note like how you do, I'm like, "How does he do that?!!" ha ha. Everyone has something that they can do and something that others would find it amazing.
I love good bass singers. Hearing a take from a bass singer is great
Tim sliding in my ear DM's is the most unexpected thing I never knew I needed to hear in my life. :D
You know your stuff. I really liked your analysis/reaction.
Avi's voice is like warm chocolate 😊 Best description ever!
Love how you break down songs for the common person to truly understand. I’m a Home Free fan 100%, but I would love to hear you do a breakdown of VoicePlays Oogie Boogie!!!!
I just discovered this reaction you did....11 months ago?! Or just re-released from 2014? I can't tell, but seriously, dude! I fell in love with you, your reacting "style", your breakdown and analysis of my two other favorite artists, Home Free and Avi Kaplan, all OVER AGAIN. We, the public beneficiaries of all this great music ability, are so ignorant of HOW it happens. I just sink into goo with those warm notes. Chocolate Mint on a cool October night....sigh. So glad I am subscribed to each one of you. I needs my chocolate fixes.... mm mm m
This song marked my transition from PTX to Home Free, and I never looked back. The vibes I get from VoicePlay and Home Free are amazing! Don't get that from PTX.
I read somewhere that Avi didn't know how to do growls, and Tim was teaching him before they recorded this. You can see Avi's look of triumph when he does it! 🔥😍. They both have very warm voices, and I love that! Well, time to listen to this another thousand times! 🔥💖😍👍🎶
I hope soon you'll react to VoicePlay's "You're a Mean One, Mr Grinch"
I love your reactions! 💖
Yeah (for me it was Man of Constant Sorrow) PTX is outstanding, but too smooth, clean, safe for my taste
It was the same for me. Once I found Home Free (with this song), I very quickly transitioned from PTX to HF, mostly because I prefer all of their individual voices, their overall blend, their arrangements, the kind of music they cover or create, and also their humour and personalities to PTX.
I'm not sure you're right, I've heard Avi growl quite nicely before they did this collaboration (you can hear it at the end of "Can't hold us" and in some of their other songs). Maybe he gave him some tips of how to do it better.
Another fun reaction! Love your insights. Would love to see your reaction to VoicePlay, "My Mother Told Me" and another one of your Bass Gang videos (really enjoyed your reaction to "Bury a Friend" and would love to hear more behind the scenes info!)
First time viewer here, but it wont be my last. I sure enjoyed your analysis on this song I have listened to a hundred times. Can't wait to watch more reaction to Home Free. They have such a huge catalogue to pick from. May I suggest a song where Tim does some amazing work, I know it is not Christmas yet, but that is OK. Adam Rupp, their beatboxer arranged "Do You Hear What I Hear" and it is frankly Amazing and for sure worth a listen no matter the season. !!!!!
I'm an Avi fan, but I really like the version the guys did on The Sing Off. It's quite interesting to hear the judges' comments. That's the Johnny Cash they did. Another really good one is Colder Weather. There's quite a good video called Constant Memory lapse what were they thinking...great fun! Enjoy your thorough analysis when you react... it's not just OMG that's great. (I mean isn't that everyone's reaction? You give me info; thank you.
After Avi does his intro, we have Adam spewing his un digested drum kit that comes in, which takes everyone, reactors, off guard! Love this song and their spin on it!
First time on your channel. An opera singer...no wonder your Italian pronunciation is so spot on. :). Time is a great bass, and in addition has an incredible range. I love him, but my feelings about Avi's voice...well, there are almost no words, although calling it "like melted chocolate" works, or like velvet. It's how I imagine bass angels sing. :)
I’m new here and just subscribed. Of course, I’m a fan of Home Free since the Sing Off. I was already a fan of the show and watched from season 1. Home Free is my favorite from the series, but I like PTX, Voice Play, and Streetcorner Symphony (Chance from Home Free came from that group). Also, Peter Hollens was on the same season as SCS. He’s not a bass, but can hit some low notes.
I don’t know anything about you, Peter, but you have a solid bass voice and it sounds like a really good radio voice, as in either a DJ or radio talk show or morning radio show host. It’s dry easy on the ears. I really appreciated your take and notes on the recording and the singers (mainly Tim and Avi). Looking forward to see what’s next.
Talent seeing talent. Love the reaction. Nice. 👍🏻👍🏻
They always slip in some like hip hop percussion in there that's dope
There is a vocal of Tim singing Can't Help Falling In Love With You for his grandmother. He accompanies himself on piano. He does some amazing vocal calacentics.
Cracking up at myself lol, sighed at the same time as you did at 10:48😂
Great review analysis spot on !
❤️❤️ your voice!!!
Have you heard, Home Free’s version of Mayday yet?? If not would love to see you check it out
Great song 🎵 👌 Thanks for your reaction.👏
I always liked Avi's little smile at the end like "oh yeah Tim that rocks"...
