  • I cover best affordable colored pencils for beginning and tips for colored pencil affordable quality of the colored pencils with my recommendations. The brands of colored pencils that I discuss range from beginner to more advanced pencils that are pretty affordable for the quality that there is in the pencils. My beginner tips are to invest in colored pencils that aren't too expensive until you decide the colored pencil medium is for you and you want to continue drawing with them. Colored pencils can get pretty pricey and a lot of brands aren't affordable for quality you get, some are what I consider overpriced. So I have brought you this list of the colored pencils that I would recommend that are great for beginning colored pencils, and are great quality for the money.

    UPDATE
    Recently it is becoming known that Arteza Colored Pencils have water-solubility issues, here's more about it if you are thinking of buying these pencils.
    Arteza has made changes with their formula, and launched their new (fixed) non-water soluble formula when they released their 120 sets. The thing is though, they didn't bother pulling all their defective stock so it wouldn't be sold anymore, so when you buy their lower pencil count sets (48 and 72) it's a hit and a miss whether you get a defective batch or not. Water-soluble pencils may inhibit your ability to spray your drawing with a fixative becuase it could cause it to activate and bleed, and if you do mixed media artwork, anything that has water or is a liquid will cause your pencils to bleed.

      Also light fast ratings are in question. You can watch Color My World's you tube channel as she recently performed a light fast test on several brands, including Arteza which failed miserably.

      It isn't just the lower numbered sets. When I purchased my first set, they dissolved in water terribly. I contacted the company direct and they shipped me out a new set right away. I had zero issues with that set, so they must have been the newer formula.

      Yeah, also Arteza lies about their lightfastness ratings. You can see it in their watercolors. Look up their ratings and actual lightfastness on handprint. 😕
      Arteza is just a cheap students brand. Nothing more and nothing less. Fun for a good price.

    I'm so envious every time someone brings up Prismacolor as an affordable brand. Because here you pay almost 50€ for a set of 24 and the 150 set is around 250€, on par with Polychromos. I wish Sanford Newell would start to sell them in Europe too, for the same price as in the us. The market is certainly there, as well as the demand.

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před rokem +4

      That's expensive! Personally I don't think Prismacolor is affordable even here in the US, in my opinion they are overpriced and cheap quality. I know lots of people use them and like them because of being wax based, but their sticker price is already too high, and then you end up eating your money also because they constantly break when sharpening. You'd be better off spending your money on other cheaper brands.

    As far as I am concerned, Polychromos are the best and most unique among the professional grade of colored pencils. There is no substitute for this brand. You could use any one of the major brands of colored pencils with these beautifully. I own all of them. I would not buy any set that doesn't offer open stock availability.

I did reach out to the company, because I would also recommend if they were available open stock. I am happy to report their response was that they are “working on this and plan to make them available this way in the future!” I will definitely include them in my professional recommendations on my own channel when this option is implemented. Given their lightfast quality, once available open stock, I feel they will move into the professional market and could become a strong competitor there.

  • @Morticia147
    @Morticia147 Před 2 lety +3

    Does Arteza profide by what guide they test their lightfastness? I know that there are actually two approved methods (please don't ask me the names, I don't remember) where the standards are high.
    Quiet often with this cheep brands the develop their own "method". And I also would recommend to buy a smaller set of maybe 12 colors from a good brand rather then a big set from these cheep pencils.
    With 12 colors you have to learn how to mix colors and you'll definitely benefit from that a lot and you know what you've quality wise.
    If you don't care if the pencils are really lightfast (and with that price I highly doubt that they do the same testing as Derwent or Faber Castell) then it might be ok, but not if you want your Art to last or to sell it. Part of the high price of the other pencils is the quality of the pigments and the immense testing when it comes to lightfastness.

    • @jessicamatheneyfineart
      @jessicamatheneyfineart  Před 2 lety

      No, Arteza doesn't provide which standard they test their lightfastness to, I am guessing they made up their own, or just lied and said they tested them.
      Most beginners don't know how to mix colors, and learning to mix colors as well as learn how to choose the right colors can take a very long time to learn for most people, this is why I recommend sets at least between 20-30 for beginners. It just so happens that a lot of the cheaper brands offer high number sets above even those numbers.
