      Laney, have you ever tried using pencil grips (those squishy foam things that fit over pencils to make them softer and easier to use)? I buy packs of 100 from amazon and the grips do seem to make the pencils better to hold onto and I seem to have a little more hand control and also to be able to color longer.

      @@pogz1 I think the human mind is wired so we can’t see our own achievements a lot of the time. We look at ourselves and we feel our art isn’t good enough, or our athleticism isn’t good enough, or we’re not pretty/handsome enough, but people looking at us think “wow, their art is amazing” or “look how nice that person looks”. We’re always going to want to strive to do better, that’s just human nature, but we humans also have a tendency to never see the positives in ourselves, only the negatives. I’m so glad you said you’ll continue to push to be better at your art rather than giving up! But rather than looking at your art and saying “boy, that’s awful”, try looking to find at least one thing you did well-for example “hey, that flower I drew is symmetrical and the colors I used on it really go well together”. And remember, someone out there who sees your art is thinking to themselves “wow, I wish I could do this as well as Pogito does”.🙂

    As one who owns all of the premium artist grade colored pencils, there is one point I would like to add to the discussion on the merits of various brands. I believe that one important aspect of Polychromos colored pencils is that I have found their 120 color range to be better balanced and more complete a set of hues than any of the others. That said, I still think it is desirable to own and work with 2 or 3 sets as most quality sets have some special standout colors.

    • @suewilkinson910
      @suewilkinson910 Před 3 lety +7

      Polychromos are lovely, but they are sorely lacking in lighter tones. There are very few pale colours. And we need those alongside the vibrant hues.

    • @leesanchez8432
      @leesanchez8432 Před 3 lety +8

      For lighter tones, you need to learn to mix bold hues with white and various light colors which are available.

      @suewilkinson910 Před 3 lety +26

      @@leesanchez8432 Excuse me for expressing my opinion! I’ve been using coloured pencils for many years and no, I don’t need to learn to mix white with everything. That completely changes the look. These are my favourite brand overall, but they lack paler tones and it is a shame. Other brands, especially Derwent, manage to provide a good variety of strength of hue. And as a result are in regular use to fill in the Polychromos holes.

    • @danieljamesbinderystu2968
      @danieljamesbinderystu2968 Před 3 lety +15

      Hello there Lee, I would have to say that I absolutely disagree with you and agree with the last part of the comment. Iam a full time professional artist and Bookbinder and I literally own every full professional artist grade set of colored pencils, pastel pencils and watercolor pencils that are available. The polychromos are definitely a good set, but their color pallet is definitely not a well rounded color selection. It actually fits very niche subjects very well, with colors not found in other sets. It definitely has many drawbacks in its colors with lighter tones and mixing them with white definitely isn't gonna work like it's paint. When you mix with white in colored pencils, it completely alters the true appearances of the color, hue and tint to the color is extremely hard to get what you need by mixing in white. You get a white washed out looking color, and depending on what color it's mixed with... and solid waxy looking pastel color. Also they are an extremely extremely hard pencil and layer great, but blending them is a huge pain in the ass. You should never have to fight with your supplies to get the outcome right. I typically only use a handful of colors out of the polychromos 120 set with all my other brands. Now I definitely agree with you on using a bunch of sets together is the best option for an artist, because you can make up weaknesses in each set with other sets. If iam going to do alot of layering and or need very fine details, I always reach for my Caran D'ache Pablo 120 set over the polychromos. The Pablo 120 set has a better balance of colors and I think they layer and blend alot smoother than polychromos, and they can hold a point for along time as well. The sets I use the most are Holbein 150, Derwent lightfast 100, Luminance 100, Derwent Drawing pencil 24 set, Pablo 120 set, Caran D'ache Museum Aquarelle 76 set ( wet and dry ), Albrecht Durer 120 set ( wet and dry ), supracolor soft 120 set ( wet and dry ) and a handful of polychromos, a handful of Derwent procolour, a handful of Derwent coloursoft a few Derwent artist colored pencils and believe it or not, sometimes I will use my complete set of Winsor and Newton pigment markers to do underpainting for my colored pencil pieces since they are pigment based and lightfast. Now with all this being said, I only use lightfast colors and only use the non lightfast colors in sketchbooks. I don't use any of these budget Chinese made brands because they aren't lightfast at all, and use a ton of dyes and fillers. I already have enough sets in my studio to make up a massive non lightfast pallet. Have a good one

    • @sarahleboeuf6658
      @sarahleboeuf6658 Před 3 lety +19

      You do realize that adding white to create a lighter tone is a very amateur mistake- it makes the color opaque. That was one of the most basic things I learned in art class in high school- you don’t mix your colors with white to create a lighter or softer color.

In fact, they are cheep as they are intended for children, but the appearances can be deceptive, as we know... ;-) And I believe you will enjoy them! I think they are FABULOUS (some people compare them to Holbeins), though they may have some week points too and I'm sure you will find them! :) Oh, and it seems to me they have been getting more and more "fashionable" worldwide recently. I love the Brutfuner but I regret getting the square ones. My pencil sharpener eats them up. SO they are not economical in the long run. I bought them because I loved the presentation of color and there are some really nice ones. And, If you try to sharpen them with anything but an electric sharpener, it becomes work instead of fun. Also, the color names are in Chinese if you are o.k. with that, fine. That said, they have a nice lay down and I have many brands including Prismacolor, Holbein, Castle, Starjoy, Markart etc. Rather than recommending Brutfuner, I recommend Starjoy and even Markart over Brutfuner. However, if you must have Brutfuner, get the round ones. I would like for you, Sarah, to review Cool Bank. Hi there! I posted this on another channel as well, but wanted to add it here, since your review also helped me make up my mind. 😊 I chose the square Brutfuners:
    “I know it’s an older video, but just wanted to say, I really love these pencils! I’m a beginner with colored pencils. Between your reviews and several others, I decided to try them. They were $30 on Amazon with a 25% coupon, and came quickly. I love the easy lay down of pigment. They are perfect for learning blending, and other practice and adult coloring. I tend to fidget with my pens and pencils, and the square shape had actually become my favorite fidget toy. 😆 They do actually work in my T’gaal hand sharpener, with some adjustments. It will seriously leave bite marks and chipped paint, and you may have to fiddle with it to get the pencils to turn initially. But it is doable if you are careful. I will eventually get an electric sharpener, but this is practice for me right now. The bite marks simply make the set ‘not precious’ so I can play with them without twitching. Thank you for the fun recommendation! I’m thoroughly enjoying these!”

I just pitted my polychromos against prismacolor scholar pencils, the later of which cost me 30$ for 60vs 120$ for the pack of 60 Polychromos and I find the prismacolor more vibrant, pigmented and easy to blend, also lightfastness (the resistance to fading) is a weird and subjective thing, lightfast ratings don’t actually ensure your color’s to last.

    I bought mine ages ago - before the hype started (in fact it was probably me that started the hype as I was so impressed with them and went on about it at every opportunity!). Mine have round barrels but are all one colour, unlike the Castle Arts. They also lay down very differently from my Castle Arts. I think my set is 160 (possibly 180 - can't remember as I've put them in a big case). They are really lovely and smooth, and layer beautifully. I have discovered that you need to use lots of light layers. I suspect mine are more like the square ones which may actually be the same and just square as a gimmick... Who knows. But I love them.

    Wow what a thorough review, amazing job! 👏 It’s funny, I was actually searching Amazon reviews last night because I felt like my new Deli pencils were very waxy looking for an oil-based pencil. They leave quite a shine on the page when burnished.
    The Brutfuner squares had a strong initial smell for me while my Castle Arts (in a tin) didn’t smell much at all! I haven’t tried the Bruts yet as I’m on the fence about keeping or returning them after watching some great reviews on Nyoni/Markart...

    Well, at least I chose good cheap pencils to start? I got myself the Shuttle Art set to make sure I'd enjoy it and stick with it. Now I have a birthday next month and I've put my lovely Prismacolor set on the list, but at least I've set myself up for a fair trial and some reasonable artwork in the meantime!
    Seriously, thank you for this. I went budget to test my ability and whether I'd like it, but I was feeling a bit like I'd hamstrung myself after watching a few more videos. Now I feel like yeah, I may need a few more layers and they might not blend quite as smoothly, but I'm not completely wasting my time and they're definitely okay for my 8 year old (who will inherit them when I upgrade to prismacolor). Thank you! It's very validating to see this!

    I've just bought a set of 40 Brutfuner pencils for doing the colouring books I've recently been given. I didn't want to waste my good pencils, and had heard a lot of good things about these budget pencils.

      @@demi3115 I’ve got those, and would say the square Brutfuner feel nicer to use and easier to blend, and I would choose the square Brutfuner between the two.
      Although the student Faber-Castell are better produced and more consistent from one set to another, and you won’t get misprints or missing colors like you might in a budget set.
      Budget sets are good at replicating nice features, and producing pencils that are nice to use, but the quality control and customer service of reputable brands will always be better.

Even before you mentioned the Brutfuner 180 set being the same all across the board with just different brand names, I knew right away that they were probably the same as the 180 set of ShuttleArt I own, which I will never order again, as I think they are of not good quality at all. Though, the Brutfuner 120 square set are very nice to have and I am considering ordering another set as soon as they ship from Canada again. I always sharpen new pencils as they often have a really thin coating on them to protect them when they leave the factory.
