  • After publishing our previous video of the Top 3 Cheap Colored Pencils on Amazon in 2024, some popular brands dipped in price below our $30US benchmark. So we quickly purchased them to run the same colored pencil tests and include them in our results. The brands we added were Arrtx, Arteza, Castle Arts & Markart colored pencils. How do you think these brands ranked? Did any of them beat out our top 3 affordable pencil sets?

I had the Artxx for a second because of all the viral talk about them being like prismas - I wound up returning them because I still prefer my prismas more. However - I did notice one thing - they sit more securely in the box if you put them tip up instead of tip down

I keep telling myself that I shouldn't buy any more of these budget sets--I need to put my money toward completing my Derwent Lightfast set, and replacing several pencils in some of my other sets. But I don't listen to myself. I just like trying different colored pencils too much! Plus I prefer to take the less expensive, smaller sets with me in my bag as part of my "travel set".

@@birdgirl2623 what I am discovering after playing with my budget pencils then switch to Prismas is how hard you have to work to get good color contrast even after multiple layers with the budget pencils. The pigment just isn’t there. The Star Joy Gold edition was still a budget pencil set but after all the work that went into the creation of this set, they got it right. Nice pigmentation, easy to get the shades and shadows how you want them to look. I’m gifting away to my cousin my SchpirrerFarben set of 96 and therefor trying to get his art juices going. He and I are alike; we have the talent thanks to an artsy gene that crops up at least one child in each generation but we are procrastinators.

Hi Jennifer and Steve and Rose. Great video. Of course prices fluctuate all the time all over the world. Of course a totally accurate analysis is difficult because of all the national identity brands and personal favorites.
For example the markart is a brand that is expensive and hard to get in the UK. Bit if i was to recommend the wh smioths sets you wouldn't have a clue what they were like. Of course the other hurdle is with so many brands of budget pencils and the rumours of them all being the same but for their white label names how can we truly tell.
Lastly is personal preference, I love my shuttle art, and how they perform on amazon uk pages, so papaers and style of colouring have a huge impact. I guess what im trying to say in a very rambling way is take advice in board but ultimately go with what is right for you. Thanks for reading and take care.

I've heard great things about Mungyo and Paul Rubens. Specifically, Paul Rubens released a new line of oil pastels that people really seemed to like (they have sharpened tips unlike the other line which is also popular). The main complaint about the original line is that they are really sticky. The new line is described as super creamy, like drawing with lipstick. The mungyo ones seem to be the go to. Specifically, the more expensive line and no the budget one. Hope that helps a bit to get some ideas. I actually bought the new Paul Rubens set, but I haven't tried them yet haha

    • @mimo4000
      @mimo4000 Před měsícem

@@orchdork775 I've bought several of the Mungyo sets; they're a good value for the price. But the Paul Rubens oil pastels are on another planet; they are so soft and creamy and blendable. They blend easily just using your finger very lightly, whereas other oil pastels you have to rub until you've almost got friction burns. Even the PR packaging is first rate, each pastel is protected so there's no color transfer to the other sticks.

I managed to snag the 126 set of Arrtx for under $30 during a limited deal back in January, and the packaging on that one is extra frustrating. It's the same setup as the 72, but with *two* of those awful bases shoved into the top. They never sat right. My husband just 3D printed an entire gridfinity pot set for the top of my Raskog cart so now all 700+ pencils in my collection are on display... now I'm trying to think of an alternative use for the Arrtx box because it's really pretty, just not good to keep the pencils in.

I started with colouring blocks and used them all out. The last bits I used trying to dye coffee filters- didn' t work well, but had I had the knowledge I now have the results would have been different. I have Inktense, water colours and Derwent softs. Here they also sell Derwent Academy pencils, which I haven 't tried. Are you common with the Nassau brand? I bought a set of 120 only about 15€. Not tried them yet. Nassau has also Alcohol markeres and Micron like inkpens. Crafter's Companion also sells pencils- have you tested those? Once a again huge thanks for everything you do! With respects, Marja.

I have been having ALOT of trouble lately getting certain prism colored pencils, specifically for skin tones. For some strange reason my local Michaels have not had colors, such as Light Peach and Peach, nor have they had any of the Prisma Portait sets come in. If I want these colors my only option has come to hang to buy a set with these colors, which is bad enough because I would be basically playing $40 for a set to get just 2 colors. But they dont even have any sets with this 2 in the one set. Anyways, I am left now looking for an alternative that is not too expensive while I wait for Michaleals to finally get these items in. Do you have any suggestions for a colored pencil that are good with realistic skintone that are budget friendly. All I have EVER used has been Prisma Premiers. I do have do have the Crayola Skintone set, and although great for their price I am looking for something that will produce better or more vibrant results and again that are more budget friendly that work well for realistic skintones - wondering if you have any suggestions

I wait and buy the better quality sets when they are on sale. I got 120 set of Polychromos for about $180 Australian back in February. I also wait to buy the full set because open stock is so expensive here that completing the set with open stock over time doesn’t make financial sense. I did purchase the Albreich Durer 60 set yesterday. They were 30% off and then $15 taken off at checkout. Ended up being $117. I only want them for underpainting so went for the 60. Highly variable from pencil to pencil, lots of breakage (more than Prismas!), and lacking in pigment in many cases. I'm so sorry for your loss. I know it's not the same but I lost my grandmother in Feb and am still mourning her. In every pencil set, you'll have at least a few pastel shades like light pink, light blue, etc. If you take the time to pick them out or note them down separately, you can always make up your own set of pastel colors! Even sets that are not known for their pastels will have at least a few lighter tints.
Just as an example, in the Arteza 120 set, you can consider the following colors to be 'pastel', even if they aren't labelled as such. Cream, Jasmine, Peaches, Marmalade, Macaron, Ube, Sky, Fog, Dolphin, Mushroom. Especially if you use them with ligth layers and also by going over them with a good white pencil. Sometimes what I do is put down a layer of white first, then go over it with another color to make it pastel. Because pastel is just the hue + white anyway.
Having fewer sets is actually better I feel, it teaches you to improvise and use little things like the above to make your own colors. You come to understand colors better and how to get what you need from a limited resource. I hope this helps!

I bought a 24 set of Castle arts, a little more than a year ago, and I tried them on every book I have, expensive and ones with Amazon paper, and I do not like them! Scratchy, they didn’t layer well, or blend well, and I really tried to like them, but ended up giving them to the 12 year old next door.

I'm feeling the same. I grabbed three of their artist series tins when they were on sale for $10 a piece. Not a huge fan. Maybe the gold pencils are better? In any case, I'm thinking of giving them away or throwing them in our upcoming yard sale.

Has anyone tried the Crayola Signature Blend and Shade 24 count in the tin. I have just recently purchased all of the Crayola Signature line except these pencils? I did however purchase the Crayola Signature Blend and Shade Activity Set that comes with 12 pencils and 4 oil paint crayons along with activity sheets. I haven’t received that set yet. I have purchased a ton of art supplies recently because I decided I wanted to color. Unfortunately I have become overwhelmed by it all and have yet to touch any of them. I was of the mindset that I needed colored pencils, watercolor pencils, watercolor crayons, oil crayons, alcohol markers, acrylic paint pens, several hundred gel pens, watercolor pens, coloring books, sketchbooks, watercolor books, swatch books. I’m forgetting things. Now I have no clue where to start. I have yet to use a single item. I never realized how daunting of a task coloring is for an almost 40 year old woman who hasn’t actually colored in decades. Unless you count sitting with the kids trying to teach them to color in the lines.

Lindsay the Frugal Crafter has a review of them with her inexpensive colored pencils. It was done in 2000 during COVID

Oh, dear. Just go and pick up something, anything, grab some paper and jump in! Try doing some swatches first and just play! It's meant to be FUN, not traumatising, go for it.

I am exactly the same!! I have soooo many colored pencils and art supplies and I have not gotten past swatching! It feels so intimidating, especially when you watch so many talented people on CZcams like Jennifer. I’m scared of ruining my coloring books and am so worried about not choosing the right colors. My little nieces and nephews ages 5, 8 and 9 love coming over to do art and they are fearless while I’m scared. It’s embarrassing and probably sounds so silly but that’s where I am right now. Maybe we can support and encourage each other! I love swatching, but would really love to actually begin coloring. ❤

Leave a box or even just about eight colored pencils plus plain old paper right next to where you eat meals. Start doodling while you eat; that reduces the overwhelming fear. Tell yourself you’re just trying out colors. Hope this helps!

@@feliciaharris7372 Please don't be scared of 'ruining' your coloring books. The only way to waste them would be to NOT color in them! If you're hesitant about starting to color or picking the 'right' colors, I would suggest starting with your least favorite book and the least favorite page within that book. Grab some pencils/pens/markers, whatever you have and just start coloring.
Some things that helped me get over my fears:
      1. It's only a coloring book. Nobody, including myself, is expecting a masterpiece that will hang in the Louvre!
      2. There's always more pages, more books, more pencils to color. Don't be afraid of 'wasting' coloring supplies. It's not wasted if you're actually using them.
      3. Every page you color need not be a special one to post online. If you don't feel like it, you don't have to show your art to anyone, in real life or online, social media etc.
      4. The goal of coloring is to relax and de-stress. Take 10 minutes out of your routine to put away the worries of life and just color like kids. No child has ever been afraid to pick up a crayon and color, so why should we be afraid?
      5. There's no 'wrong' way to do art or coloring. Not everyone wants to learn new techniques or improve their skills. If you just want to fill mandala books with sharpies or bic pens, go right ahead!
I've been coloring for 8 years now and even now I sometimes spend hours on a page getting everything exactly 'right', even though there is no such thing. On other days, I have a few books where I've told myself it doesn't matter how the results turn out. I just want to color in them. I'll use markers, I'll pick random colors, I'll just enjoy the feeling of putting colors on paper. You can even color in children's books, no one is stopping us from doing that!
I even have a technique book that's just for trying out new things or supplies. It's filled with incomplete pages, pictures I've ruined because I didn't know what I was doing :D It's great!! There's no pressure to finish a page or anything. My goal is to learn that new technique or medium well enough, that's it. I hope some or any of the above tips can help you overcame that initial fear!!

I noticed you said nothing about the lightfastness which is a big deal for artists who are not just “coloring”. I also disagree with your statement that you could create good art with all as they could shade. If you cannot layer, you could possibly make a nice coloring sheet with only the colors provided but not an artistic work. So there I am a bit leery of your results. I think that if you cannot layer, they should not even be considered. It is essential for creating color pencil works. And if they fade in a month or a year? It was a waste of your time put in to make a fabulous piece of work. And third, I am assuming these are all wax based pencils but how fast do they bloom. I have ruined many works from blooming
