  • A while ago I released my Top 5 Budget Colored Pencils, I am always being asked what my favourite colored pencils are and I have always been reluctant to say what they are because I don't want other artists, especially young or new artist to be influenced by what my favourite pencils are. Here we take a look at my Top 5 Artist Grade Colored Pencils.
However by creating these list I don't really say what my all time favourite colored pencil is and only according to the list. In this video we go down the rabbit hole and I show you what my top 5 artist grade colored pencils are. In the video I explain my interpretation of the difference between artist grade and artist quality colored pencils.
I would like to stress that this is not a definitive list, I am not saying these are the best colored pencils in the world, I am not saying that you should consider the list when buying your colored pencils, nor am I suggesting you have to live your artistic life around this list. The pencils in this top 5 list are only my favourite after 7 years of testing, researching, demonstrating and reviewing colored pencils, of which there have been many. I would love however to hear what your top 5 artist grade colored pencils would be and I think it would be cool to see how similar or different the lists are and we can embrace those differences. You might hear about a pencil you had never considered and try it and it end up in your best 5.
For every pencil I have mentioned in this list, I have provided links back to my original review of them just incase you would like to know more in-depth detail about the pencils. I have also completed a written Top 5 Artist Grade Colored Pencils which I think will aid in helping people understand a few things I discuss in the video regarding lightfast grading.

I totally agree with you Harry, I prefer the softer consistency of the Luminance core to the harder Derwent Lightfast core. I like drawing Botanical subjects and use both brands but I hanker for more Luminance colours that suitable for natural subjects. Maybe one day Caran D’ache will further extend the range!
Thanks Harry, appreciate all your hard work.

I don't have a top 5, but my absolute favourites are the Polychromos, I tried so hard to like the Luminance as much, but I love layering and the Polychromos are superior and keep a good point for a very long time. So my top 3 are:
    1. Polychromos
    2. Luminance
    3. Derwent Drawing
I haven't tried the Derwent Lightfast though.
Please keep on producing your very informative videos!

i love those qualities too, the downside is that not even the colors labeled as very resistant to light are truly lightfast u.u not nearly as much as the derwent lightfast or the caran d ache luminance. not gonna lie, faber castell has dissapointed me with the years

Hi Harry, I love your reviews and other videos. This one was great, too. And as you started talking about a controversy, I immediately knew it would concern the Polychromos pencils. I fully agree with you. I myself only use colored pencils in coloring books, so I am unlikely to buy Luminance or Derwent Lightfast pencils. I really look forward to seeing your Top 5 artist quality pencils video.

I was a bit torn when I tried to go for a good coloured pencil since I got back into drawing/painting. But your reviews helped me a lot. Especially since you also put emphasis even on how the pencil feels on the paper. I had some in the past that were soft and I just didn't like them. So I tried the harder ones and now I have my Koh-i-noor Polycolour and Faber-Castell Polychromos thanks to you. So just want to say thank you.

I can’t tell you how much it means to me when I read your comment. My only goal for this channel is to help people spend their hard earned money on the right products for them and not waste money buying a few products not right for them before getting the perfect one.
But I know art is so subjective and there are so many variables that come into play when we use particular mediums such as how heavy handed or delicate we are when layering, the paper we use etc. So I needed to make my reviews as detailed as I could.
My aim is to make watching one of my reviews, the next best thing to actually testing the product in the shop yourself. I know some people don’t like the amount of detail and think it is tedious and because of this I am thinking about adding a quick bullet point review on CZcams alongside the detailed review so hopefully pleasing as many people as possible.
I know I can’t please everyone nor would I even try, but if I can please as many as possible then I have achieved part of my goal. Thank you so much for you comment it makes me so happy to know someone has found my review helpful.

@@TheArtGearGuide You are very right... outside of material variations, there are also different styles of drawing/painting and you can't possibly reasonably cover them all. But from my point of view you do an amazing job showing everything you can. Especially since you add even the speed drawings, it helps put the theoretical tests into context. And I know that's showing your style of drawing on a specific paper, but it really helps to see. Thank you again.

Thank you so much for such a kind and wonderful comment, I can’t begin to explain how happy it makes me when I hear that my reviews have helped people. As a Soldier in the British Army and part of an Elite Regiment, it was all I wanted to be from a young age and help defend and protect people. During my time as a soldier, I loved my time, helping so many people, it genuinely made me feel so good about myself, regardless of the conditions. When I was medically retired after my spinal injury I fell into a deep depression and didn’t know what to do, but I turned to art as a form of therapy. Once art started to heal me, I wanted to be back in a position where I was helping others, no matter how small and reviews was the only way. When I first started out there was not many people reviewing art supplies. There was only people like Marty Owings, Lindsay The Frugal Crafter and Lisa Lachri Fine Art, all people who I have admired and learn so much from.
Anyway, thank you so very much for your wonderfully kind and generous comment and your support, it really does mean so much to me.

I have really appreciated this review because I never understood light fast . I truly thank you . And although I am American I appreciate your services in the military branch. I thank you wife with a husband who went to Vietnam, and came back with a purple heart. And my father, who was in the Korean War, and grew up in the shadow of the greatest man that ever lived World War II.
I admire the man of Great Britain and American, who, united for the most horrible war, ever seen in history so far. I know when my husband came back from Vietnam. The soldiers were not appreciated and that was a terrible time in history. They were using weapons that were so old they were still from World War 2 Also, my father uses the same kind of weapons.
To my son en law that went to Afghanistan, using some of the best weapons made came back, very depressed as well.
I can’t imagine being in war but it must be the most awful experience ever no matter what war , war is war and it’s not pretty.
I admire you for your courage because it takes a lot of courage to go through what you went through and come out of it alive with the same mind and you made it you made it. You are a true soldier, and always will be proud of it.
I lost my 38 year old daughter 2 years ago drew to delta covid. She lasted 19 days in a coma, breathing out of that awful machine.
I a still grieving the only thing that has help me keep my mind busy is coloring it has save me in so many different ways. There is something about color and coloring that helps the mind clam down. There is nothing like losing a child especially your adult child that you have seen grow into a woman. There isn’t a day that I don’t cry and people can be so insensitive, saying things it’s time you move on it’s time you get over it. Everyone grieves a loss differently. although I know they mean well, they just don’t understand this kind of loss specially a mother, who carried them full-term, and gave birth to them.
I appreciate this information again and I thank you I am not an artist I am adult coloring adult pages. And just try to survive a very difficult situation in my life right now.
I came here because although I own primas colors
colors and Faber Castell polychromous thinking it was up them at the top ?
I have had both colors since 2016 . Thought I would try something new.😊
If you any advice I would appreciate it.

Hullo Harry, I found this video quite interesting and I don’t have a problem with any of your choices. I have always worried about my artworks lasting or standing the test of time. I must say that display and storage are more important than pigments and quality of pigments used in artworks! I know framing UV protective glass and kinds of lighting used in your home determines how long a piece of art will last. So many fine print addendums are important in testing. Museum display conditions, museum storage etc. I often think about if an artwork is good enough people will take good care and it will last. I met a guy in school who did not care if his art lasted! The faster it deteriorated the better! I am enjoying watching your videos and think you are a very good artist. Thank you for sharing your time and efforts creating video’s to educate your viewers. Please take care, be safe and enjoy your day.

Art buyers don't always know that displaying the work opposite of a south-facing window in their living room will drastically shorten its lifespan. Pigments in color pencils are much more sensitive to light than in oil or acrylics, so for someone who doesn't normally buy color pencil art, it's a new problem they may not have ever thought about. Colored pencil and watercolor artists should definitely educate their buyers on how to display their work appropriately. If we don't warn them and the work fades, who will they blame? Naturally, the artist.

I must admit, I've always been cynical regarding the Faber-Castell star rating to indicate lightfastness. I mean if they were truly doing ISO 105 blue wool testing, why wouldn't they just publish the results (1-8) for this as Derwent and others do? Having certified ISO 105 on a product is more meaningful as both a recognised standard and selling point that it does beg the question.

Hi Harry, my top 3 is also Luminance, Derwent Lightfast and Polychromos. I would put Polychromos on the top spot if all the pencils are LFI and LFII as I prefer the transparency and hardness of Polychromos, which allow a lot of layering. But I have a problem with the Polychromos, Derwent Lightfast and Derwent Drawing as mould would grow on them as I live in a very humid country (I tried using Slica Gel, but the color practically changed within a few days, so I have to air the colour pencils regularly to prevent mould). I do not have the same problem with the Luminance, though. Without the mould problem, I would have graded 1 Polychromos, 2 Derwent Lightfast, 3 Luminance, 4 Derwent Drawing. BTW, Derwent Procolour also have mould problems, but not Derwent Artist (I only have 6 of the Artist Series, though.)

I generally agree with your choice. Sometimes, however, the choice of which pencils to choose to have is conditioned by the availability of oen stock in your city. It's true, with the internet you can find everything easily but often, the purchase of 5 finished pencils is heavily aggravated by the shipping costs. To date, in addition to various colored pencils of various more or less economic brands that I use for tests and studies, the first line consists of Caran D'Ache luminance, 24 of the portrait selection, Derwent Drawing, Polycolor Lyra and Derwent colorsoft. However, I aim to complete the Luminance and support the Caran Pablo, which I easily find compared to the Lightfast Derwnt and FABER Castell

The truth about Polychromos lightfast ratings is that they're not really ISO 105 (blue wool) certified. If they were they would just publish the 1-8 ratings like Derwent and others do.

I do agree with the FC-Poly's lightfastness kind of confusing, I did asked about it to their representative. As far as I understood, the 2 star is 25+ year (which in range of BW 5 ~ 6), however the 1 star is 5+ year (which BW 3, 4 and 5). The range of BW 5 is somewhat overlap between 1 to 2 star. But I would put FC slightly above Derwent LF because of the of decent PINK range and mid tone BLUE.

I love this so much. Thank you so incredibly much Harry.
Does anyone not like the Derwent lightfast pencils?
I don’t hate them, just the ones I have used- they feel quite inconsistent and some feel sticky and not pleasant to use ( on different papers!). Thank you so much!

I am not a big fan of Lightfast. I have the box set and they are my least used. Just kind of odd and hard to master. Too soft for some applications and too hard for others. They won't blend when I need and I find layering them a chore. I always pick Poly Chromos for my underlayers over them because of consistency (and Poly Chromos blend with solvent like a charm) and then top layer with Luminance or Holbein because I know what to expect. I get mixed and frustrated results with Lightfast though they are beautiful

I have to admit, I have a real soft spot for Caran d’Ache products, there is just something about the way they market their products and the craftsmanship behind them and the quality is just amazing in almost all their products.

Two points: When going over the Van Gogh you effectively stated that open stock was important for artists. That is exactly the reason for why I no longer recommend Derwent. There used to be a shop in Birmingham that broke sets open to create open stock for Derwent but that created an overstocking of some colours. The reason being they couldn't get Derwent as open stock. It came to be when they closed down, I had to rely on the Internet to get hold of particular pencils. That should disqualify Derwent from your list. I have moved over to Faber Castell and Caran d Ache as they both go together well. The other point is your chart shows grade 2 and 3 as being the same as does 4 and 5. The blue wool system is a bit confusing. I tend to think we can trust Faber Castell in its grading system as in time it would fall back on them.

Thanks for the video Harry. My first set of pencils was the Lyra and later the Koh I Noor. I purchased the Faber Castell because it was on special but after noticing that Lyra and Faber Castell are manufactured by the same company, I was somewhat regretting having purchased the Faber Castell. In terms of creaminess, I've not seen anything match Prismacolor pencils.

Regarding ASTM lightfastness, the certification can only be carried out by a neutral third-party who is qualified to undertake such compliance testing. In the case of Derwent, the Lightfast range was tested by Q-Lab in Arizona, who are one of the top durability and environment testing organisations in the world. Not sure where Luminance testing was carried out.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Před 11 měsíci +1

When I was doing the research for my video on lightfast I spoke with a person from Q-Lab in Arizona about the ASTM standard and then someone from the U.K. Blue Wool Lighfast testing. It took me quite a long time to gather up facts about lightfast testing because so many artist put so much weight on lightfast ratings, however, after talking with the above companies it would appear that there are so many variables that can alter a lightfast rating.
I always used to think that the Blue Wool scale was more accurate, but after talking with the lab in Arizona, I have changed my opinion and definitely think the ASTM scale is more accurate.

  • @fontainerouge
    @fontainerouge Před 7 měsíci

Npt sure about ASTM or Blue Wool protocol but the general rule is that lightfastness depends of number of hours expised to so many lux. So, exposure 10 hours a day to full sunlight for 100 days equals 5 hours for 200 days.
Any serious buyer won't expose colored pencil/watercolor and I suppose pastels to full sunlight.

I wish I could afford to buy me the derwent lightfast set; I have been drooling on it since it came out; for lightfast from derwent i only tried a few pencils and I love how creamy they feel and how vibrant they are but I just don't have the budget for it. I thus have the polychromo's set of 120; I can get the same feel of the pencil using zestit on pastel mat just takes me a bit more layers then derwent would; If I win a lottery I will buy the derwent lightfast but keep in mind im not a selling artist here so in that regard lightfast issue is a bit overrated on my end; important for me is blending and layering as I have fibromyalgia burnishing is not an option so I prioritize on paper first rather then buying an expensive set and have it be so precious I would be scared to use it :P

The only royal talons pencils that I’ve used I found I didn’t like. But they definitely weren’t the van Gogh ones. I shall add them to my list.
I must have had a bad set of Derwent drawing pencils, cause the ones I had were so bad I gave them away to a child and never give away my pencils. The ones I had were so dry and scratchy.
I’ve got a few of the light vest, I think I bought the 12 pack. I like them well enough. But I’ve never even used illuminance, when I had the cash and I attempted to get them they were way too expensive to get shipped here. Amazon charges an arm and a leg to ship to Newfoundland and it’s crazy. Like the mailman doesn’t charge that much I don’t understand why Amazon has to charge that much for shipping.

I personally do not agree a company who produces there own colored pencils should ever grade them there selves on light fast, because by the time they get found out, they would of made a fortune and would be able to pay a law suit fine or say well at the time there findings seemed correct,
Companies do go to desperate measures to keep in business, lower the quality gradually and up the price , called maximum profits.
Once they gain a name for them selves after several years they then usually cut corners when there is to much competition flooding the markets.
How many companies I know had changed there quality and cut corners once they had been well established,
Once you have convinced your self that a brand you've been using for years are still great, its not until you change then you find the one you stuck with had cut corners from when you started using them, but its hard to see if your trusted brand has convinced you to see other wise,
Its like everything it does good to change brands and when the companies start dropping production they either go under or make changes to produce better products again,
So in my opinion there testing should always be done by an independent company who has nothing to gain, unless they are taking back handers. To fudge the results.
