As a dude who walked round at 200 and fought at 170 it's not the cut that is the issue, it's performing after the cut. But as a 5ft 10 guy the alternative was fighting dudes who were all well over 6 ft and weighed 200 ripped on the night didnt seem much of an option. It's incredible the difference those 15 lbs make. If you've never fought it's hard to understand, were not all Conor, Bj, GSP.
Until they make the weights more 'fighter friendly' (ie every 10lbs or so for the men) it's a tricky situation man!
I think Kayla might think shes gonna smoke Holly so wont have to go the distance, will be really interesting to see if she fades should the fight go long.
    Great content btw! 👍🏻

Aljo 1 week after making 135 filmed himself on the scale weighing 182. I know he normally walks around in the mid 170's but this has to be the largest weight cut by percentage so it's a good thing he moved up.

  • @ghagzor
    @ghagzor Před měsícem +8

Supposedly she is weighing around 150-155 as of a few weeks ago and she is bringing her weight down more before the cut. It will be a brutal cut but I don't think it is as bad as people think, she has known about this for a while, I think she is smart enough to bring her walk around weight down considerably before the cut
That being said, if she is over 160 lbs right now it is going to be rough on her. If she is down to 150 by now then I think she will make it just fine.

This is a good video, but Kayla is definitely not an exception of a fighter that has a weight-cut like this. It's very common for fighters to cut that amount of weight these days to be able to fight in lower weight divisions. Every division has a bunch of fighters like this. There are fighters that cut 10 lbs during fight week. Especially fighters that take fights on short notice. Jalin Turner and Paulo Costa are just two examples of that. And both of them openly talk about how much they cut. Lastly, weight cutting is always unhealthy and always have a risk. Regardless, I do agree that this is really bad for long-term health. I think that goes without saying.
Kayla said in a recent interview with Ariel that her current weight is 150 lbs. This was 2 weeks ago. So that means that she only has to cut about 15 pounds or less. Which is a very common amount of weight to cut 2 weeks out of the actual fight. So what Kayla is doing definitely isn't as bad as what other fighters are doing these days.

It is harder for women to cut weight though. Women usually have less glycogen associated water stores, about 5% less total body water than an equally sized man. Women also sweat less on average, requiring higher temps (dangerous) for cutting. High hormone phase also means core body temp is higher (again dangerous) and high oestrogen and progesterone also cause water retention. A lot of fighters cut massive amounts of weight (Johnson and Pereira for example) but not a lot of them are women and for good reason. We all saw what it looked like when Cyborg was cutting

I’m baffled as to why this practice exists in the first place. Why can’t/don’t fighters just say “I weigh 180lbs, I’ll fight at 180lbs”. What is the point of cutting down to the division weight a week before the fight only to put on a load of weight for the fight itself? It surely can’t be the 135lb championship if both the fighters are 148lbs during the fight.
The entire thing seems so unnecessary, especially with how dangerous it is

My assumption is that your initial assumption is off, in that when she signed the contract, she was not walking around at 165. She doesn't have a long history of cutting weight below 155. Her last fight was 150, and I believe she fought at 145 once. So when she signed with the UFC, it was at the very least she would be fighting at 145, which is a dead division, so I'm assuming, her and the UFC were always planning for her to fight at 135, which to me means she's been cutting down even before she signed with the UFC, basically whenever serious talks began if not before, again her previous fight was at 150, maybe she was already losing the weight. So maybe her walking around weight when announced was closer to 150-155.

it is scary when making weight becomes a possibility and not a probability. i can't see her making 135, this bout will likely end up as a catchweight, or maybe even a FW fight if that is doable for holly holm and her camp. if kayla CAN make the weight, she is going to be severely compromised. ☹

The ufc has already said that she did 2 cuts to 135 before they booked the fight. Sooooo. Yeah if they’re telling the truth she’ll be fine

I have a degree in Nutrition Science myself...and I also find this weight cut particular disturbing to even think about. Appreciate the in depth breakdown, and your knowledge on the subject. I'm not particularly a fan of Kayla...but this is really, really not a good idea. Can she make it? Sure. Will she be the same after? I sincerely doubt it.

Dont really get it you get a dominant champion in only to have stipulations that will stop her peforming at her best. Seems the ufc wants to diminish her star power.

Very poignant for you guys to drop this one the same day Manon Fiorot weighed in looking like she been wandering the desert for 40 days and nights some of these weight cuts are getting really scary the commissions need to start putting hard limit's on how much fighters can cut and then do two weigh ins one start of fight week before they start cutting and then the normal one. Great stuff as always from in my opinion the world leaders in MMA journalism just taking it to another level with content like this.

the only reason why they doing this is because is the feather weight divisoon is dead, there no stroy natartives, no interesting matcing and alos potentail stars in the divison and they hoping khayla harrrison can filled that hole in the bantamwieght divison whihc also very lacking thsoe traits.

Honestly it just sounds like a bunch of ""she can't do it, and she shouldn't because it's dangerous "
Watch, she will pass her weight cut with flying colours and then come out and dominate. All of a sudden the guys saying "she's gonna miss weight and she can't do it because it's not safe" will shut up real quick and turn into "I knew she'd do it".

did you miss the point of the entire video? he explained very well how she can absolutely make 135, the main issue is that this kind of weight cut will destroy her body long term, which is a terrible career and life decision to make on 10 weeks notice

I don't approve weight cutting, but this guy doesn't sound like an expert from all angles. Fasting is, for an example, in lots of ways good for overall health and for sure you're struggling with energy deficiencies constantly... For centuries people are taking less food/calories then they actually need in order to overcome health issues and become/stay sharp, both physically and mentally.
Would stay that the mental strength that you are exercising when giving up on food and soft drinks are making you even stronger when you're faced with difficult challenge in the octagon.
There are always different ways to approach things, and this video is only supporting one of them.
