Honestly I was wondering at the time why this never happened. In hindsight, it just wasn't the superfight area. Champ vs champ was not as common back then. Fighters actually defended their belt, didn't just call out the next weight class as soon as they won the first belt.

@Hope-Truth-Light what's funny is I did the same exact thing. My friends had no clue who Cro Cop was and I spent half the night telling them he was going to be the heavyweight champ. Then he gets brutally KOd. But that's what I love about MMA. Anything can happen.

UFC not signing Fedor was ultimately good for them. If he would've signed back then, he absolutely would've beaten the brakes off Lesnar who was HUGE in turning them mainstream and popular. Every kid that watched WWE back then learned about MMA and UFC because of him and became fans. That's how I found this sport at like 9 years old.

I remember when I thought Brock Lesner was absolutely UNBEATABLE! Its so crazy how the sport has changed.
I miss those times! BJ Penn, GSP, Aldo, Cain Velasquez, Anderson Silva… UFC was so fun to watch!

Cro Cop at least asked for 1 warm up fight. I don't recall if he had to fight Eddie and asked for another fight before the belt or asked for Eddie first and they made him fight Gonzaga. I forget what interview it was but Cro Cop Said it himself he wanted a warm up fight. I don't recall if he said he was offered a title shot but he specifically asked for a warm up fight.

My theory on Silva vs GSP. Both were in GOAT status. UFC could have been worried about losing draw appeal for whoever loses the fight. So they were waiting for them to be closer to the end of their careers to throw it together. That in itself has a risk of losing one to injury, retirement, or losing to another fighter anyways, so not really sound logic. Only thing I can think of outside of the fighters not getting enough for it though

Zuffa boxing would have never meant anything because the UFC would have tried to pay top boxers UFC fighter money. They would have signed no one significant.

They fumbled the bag by betraying the fans and the sport of MMA by selling their souls to go entirely corporate just in an attempt to be accepted by traditional sports that will never accept them as their equals. They should have remained gritty, authentic, and real. No Reebok deal destroying fighters' sponsorships and hundreds of other short-sighted greedy money plays. This could have been the cool 'outsider' mainstream sport.

The UFC would NEVER have successfully gotten into ZUFFA boxing. The UFC is stingy AF with fighter pay. They never would have paid their boxers what they could've been making in regular boxing promotions. That's why UFC stars leave to go do boxing... because they pay dismally low compared to boxing.

She made more money ultimately than Ronda could at that point as the sport grew and a flag bearer was needed. You want your flag bearer be someone who can’t beat the divisions elite lol? this might be a small one but it could have some ripple effects. Zhang Weili right now is incredibly popular in China and she is fighting Yan Xiaonan who, when she fought last, KO'd Jessica Andrade who lost the title in China 4.5 years ago to Weili. I'm really glad the fight is happening but I can't for the life of me figure out why its happening in Las Vegas. China have huge stadiums and have a population of 1.4 BILLION people. IMO the UFC have fumbled a little by not focusing more on the Chinese market. Weili and Xiaonan both turn 35 this year, I wouldn't be surprised if they both have less than 5 fights left in them, especially at their very high level.
The fact GSP came back and fought Bisping at MW but wouldn't go up to fight Silva tells me it was HIS fault that fight didn't happen 🤷🏾♂️
