You can tell this was recorded before Steve went on vacation because he mentioned the Aho offer sheet but not the Kotkaniemi one
Gotta love that Shea made $13 in year 2 of his contract
Just the signing bonus
@@hlmfromdao 1 million and 13 dollars doesnt sound too bad
He made 13 millions. Steve made a mistake
average wnba salary
Craig Rivet to SJ ! This doesnt sound like much, but I guarantee ya it's a doozie !
Oh yeah, it includes Patches, Nick Suzuki, Norlinder, etc
Needs to do it
He did it already
Since then,
Weber got traded to VGK for Dadonov
Santini and Davies both signed elsewhere, ending their branches
Kunin was traded to SJS for John Leonard and a 2023 3rd round pick
Should be a fun tree in the future
And now Dadonov traded for Gurianov, who is having a nice start with Mtl
Day 50 of asking Craig Rivet/ Josh Georges trade tree
YES! Gorges, Pacioretty, Suzuki, Tatar, Norlinder, Shaw, DeBrincat, that trade tree is insane and will likely keep going
That also includes Patches, Suzuki, and a whole lot more.
Sabres fan ended up playing for the Buffalo Sabres
I like Rivs
I wish this trade tree was made 5 years from now. It's too early, but it was nice to see how much Nashville got from the Subban trade. I was unaware of the 2 side deals
Too early to realize Subban was never a 1D and isn’t even on the Preds anymore bc bad player 🤣
Never a 1D is a bit of a stretch lmao man's has won the Norris trophy and put up 60 pts in a season lmao but yes I do agree that he fell off once he was traded to New Jersey lol
@@habsmcj that norris was in a shortened season he never deserved, only reason he won it was all the cry babies in MTL every day complaining about his 10M contract.. which is horrible now KEK
@@MikeHonchoSon69 He won the Norris before he got his contract.
@@MikeHonchoSon69
Approximately 200 OTHER defensemen played in the NHL that season, why didn’t any one of THOSE win the Norris trophy that year???
Sometimes there are no losers, neither team was able to earn a cup through this trade, but both certainly had great runs. Personally I don't think the Weber side is done yet, and although Subbans stay was shorter with the Preds, they still got decent performance out of him, and traded him before the real injury issues kicked in.
If anyone in the NHL biz thinks that one or two trades will win them a cup, they should be fire immediately. Winning draft lottery helps, but you still need to create a team that backs it up. We all know the shady stuff Pitts "lucked" into. But everywhere else it shows, you need more than a few flashy players. We're in a bit of a dynasty era, where Pitts, Chi, now Tampa are the runaways. (Somehow Washington never got in on that) Beasts of the east run it, and will probably do so for a while. Playoffs are a different monster though, so MTL or OTT of 2017 can make huge runs, That's what's awesome about playoff hockey. Once you're in, all bets are off.
@@sdc363 NHL GM's just try and fill roles the best they can, you have to draft, trade and pick pieces off of other teams. There is just as much evidence to say that the Lottery win is not a viable way to a cup. You got to do it all, but sometimes a trade where both teams got what they wanted is a step in the right direction for both teams. You have to do everything almost perfectly and get some luck.
@@smaug1234 That's essentially what I was saying. It is possible too, that both teams can win a trade, depending on their current needs. Crosby was no normal draft pick, but having Malkin, Letang, Fleury etc. Made it all possible. However Edmonton squandering so many great players to be smashed come playoff time shows that it's not a done deal. McDavid is the best forward in the league, but the way the team is managed and coached they cannot break through, same with Toronto having a 40m $ powerplay is ridiculous, but they haven't won a playoff round with their makeup.
Well today Weber's contract is an LTIR cap helper for Vegas as having that traded really doesnt mean anything when its shown on a trade-tree so there's nothing to add to it.
@@dragroch5536 but the habs getting dadonov is definitely something that could lengthen this tree further down the road
I would still love to see the Trade Tree on how Vegas ended up with the roster they did in their freshman season that took them to the Cup Final.
Poor asset management by the Panthers giving away a second and two first line players for free 😎
that video will get removed for conspiracy
Wouldn’t that be called a Trade Forest?
@@martinbernier6083 wouldn't be much more different than the Gretzky tree.
@@martinbernier6083 clearly you have no idea what tehy did so you look even dumber after making this comment while i refuse to retype tehy properly... tehy tehy tehy tehy tehy
Karlsson trade tree! It's a young trade but how it's already evolved is fascinating. The Hoffman trade to San Jose is even involved
Ya but they should do the Matt Duchene trade again. I think they did it a bit too soon.
😏
Sharks legend Mike Hoffman
LOL @ 2:31 gotta love that $13 signing bonus.
Wasn't PK Close to having trade protection in his contract? I remember that being a big deal, that if Montreal waited any longer they wouldn't have been able to move him without his permission.
One of the things Montreal really wanted when trading for Weber was the intangible (e.g., leadership), and from most reports he delivered on that. Both teams got pretty solid results out of this (one trip to the Cup Final, neither got the big prize), and as Steve says, the new assets Nashville got in trade with New Jersey could yet turn out to compensate for the fact that Montreal got longer service out of Weber.
Though sadly, Nashville could not trade its way out of cap recapture danger, which still hangs over them.
Given how badly Subban’s play has fallen off subsequently, I don’t think he would have been a solution to that issue now.
@@curmudgeonaf I don't think they lost. They knew they were trading one kind of defenseman for another, and got basically what they wanted in the exchange. And since Subban fell off much faster than Weber (who basically played at level until he couldn't anymore), in retrospect they sold high on Subban.
The cap recapture might bite them hard soon
Subban was a passenger on that SCFs run, just like he played 6 minutes and won a gold medal, dude got carried 🙄
@@MikeHonchoSon69 He was tied for sixth in points for the Predators during the playoffs; I would hardly call that being a passenger.
How about what is considered one of the most lopsided trades in NHL history? The Brett Hull trade between the Flames and the Blues. Blues got a face of the franchise, and the Flames won a cup in two years (though how much that trade helped is debatable). Also it's interesting how much the Flames trade with the Leafs after this.
Hull made St Louis a hockey town, 30 years later we went Blues
But that face of the franchise was sooo ugly.
Another great video Steve! I always love listening to trade trees while getting ready for work in the morning. Steve's enthusiasm and the music makes me happy :)
So if we keep asking you might do the Craig Rivet trade?
Hey, Steve. I enjoy these Trade Trees and hope that you do more.
Always nice to hear my alma mater come up in videos like these. Let's go Tech!
Craig rivet/josh Georges trade tree
I want to see Pat LaFontaine Peter turgeon trade tree anything with Buffalo Sabres find with
This Trade Tree is great, but you seriously need to go back and look at the Brendan Shanahan trade from the early 90's that had Brendan Shanahan traded from the St. Louis Blues to the Hartford Whalers. This tree eventually leads to the Blues drafting Jordan Binnington, who was another BIG reason why the Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019. Thank me later!

Don't forget Weber PUTTING A HOLE THROUGH THE NET in the olympics!
That's not really as impressive as it sounds to be fair. As the only way that's really possible is that the puck hit a part of the net that already had a hole in it or was damaged by a skate blade or something and was about to break anyways.
wasn't that Doughty?
All 3 of those June 29 transactions happened while I taking an afternoon nap before pickup basketball. I woke up to a whole new world 😅
I'm one of many who hope to see Shea Weber play again!
The man is a beast on the ice and such a gentleman off the ice, I don't want to see him, or any player for that matter, retire due to injury
Hello Steve! the SK in the beginning of Skellefteå is pronounced like the SH in "shell" and the å is pronounced like the o in "or". So Skellefteå is pronounced Shell-left-e-o(r). Great video!
tack så mycket!
Should look at the Dany Heatley for Marian Hossa trade tree! Would be a good one!
7:04 Preds fans don't blame Hörnqvist as much as they blame the early whistle erasing a good goal.
Those trade trees videos are really fun to watch. Maybe you should do the same with draft picks. You could revisit draft picks years later to see if the teams that picked them got it right or not.
As a Preds fan who saw Weber in his first game. I was mad to hear this deal at first. Then I got over it. Liked the hell outta Subban and Weber but we still miss both of those guys!
Hope Weber can make a comeback and win a cup. His home towns not actually that far away from mine.
The only way that you could say that the Habs won the trade is if you thought that it was Bergevin's plan to bring in Weber and be a mediocre team for 5 years. Poile acquired Subban to advance in the playoffs, and they did... Immediately.
And weber helped bring mtl to the finals too? Don't see what your point is. Subban was a net negative for mtl. Hot headed, more offensive than defense and mtl severely lacked In defense, and not a leader.
Weber was a leader, a more defensive player, and more disciplined.
PK being traded from Nashville gave the Predators the cap space to sign Duchene which should be considered as well.
I was waiting/looking for this. Kind of a significant part of what happened.
Gotta love seeing a Habs Preds trade with the main guy in a Devils jersey...
And now Montreal might have to let Weber go because if Bergevin is right, Shea might never play again because of his injuries.
It’s easier to pick a loser and that’s New Jersey Montreal and Nashville both got what they wanted Nashville got a marketable star habs got a good leader New Jersey got a bag of debt
Yes Evgenii Dadonov does continue this trade tree, but also, the Nashville side of the tree also continues. With Luke Kunin getting traded to San Jose for John Leonard and a 2023 3rd round draft pick.
I've met PK and his dad separately. I ran the soundboard for Karl on a local stop during his book tour a couple years ago. Great family.
Would you guys be able to do the Phil Esposito trade tree? Love these videos!
Silly question, Shea Weber won the trade hands down.
Subban got one win closer to the cup and got flipped for futures.
Weber was probably the top defenseman on his team's SC run, Subban was either the third or fourth defenseman in his team.
Now this trade tree is longer because Montreal traded shea weber to Vegas for evgenii dadonov who they then traded to Dallas for denis gurianov. Both of them only played half a season with Montreal.
New favorite yt video. Im BINGING 😍🐐
Is there a way to find out which is the longest running trade tree? Either still running or one that has ended. Would be interesting to know!
Hey! Eemil Viro was in this one. Hoping he makes it to Grand Rapids in the next season or two.
Now Weber’s gone and we have Dadanov. The tree lives on👏
Since you brought up Hornqvist, let's do one for the time the Preds trade Hornqvist for James Neal, and then Hornqvist gets the game winner for Pittsburgh AGAINST Nashville. I was always skeptical of that trade, since they were similar in my opinion, but Hornqvist a little cheaper and better net front presence. Also, the Preds left Neal exposed for the expansion draft, while the Stanley Cup Champs protected Hornqvist. That told me who won that trade right there.
Update :
Montréal :
Shea Weber led the Montréal Canadiens to the Stanley cup final and scored 160 points in 313 games
Shea Weber was traded for Evgeny Dadonov
Evgeny Dadonov scored 18 points in 50 games
Evgeny Dadonov was traded for Denis Gurianov
Denis Gurianov scored 8 points in 23 games so far
How about a trade tree involving Jaromir Jagr from Pittsburgh, to the Caps. Eventually, it'll involve several teams, some conditional picks, future considerations, and Anson Carter.
Plot twist: everybody lost! Both guy were never the same after they were traded... PK has been running all his life on confidence and it all went away when his childhood team trade him. Weber was one my favorite mean D since Chris Pronger and i was excited to see him in the bleu blanc rouge... but he never was the human mountain from Nashville, he kept it simple in MTL never got in trouble but his style doesnt age well in this new fast paced NHL and it showed this year vs Edmonton. Since Markov left we never had a real OFD to transition the puck and i think PK wouldve been more usefull to us. And i think the Preds playoff stretch the next year could've been different with the Leadership of a Weber in their line-up
Nah Habs won big time Weber changed the culture of the team for the next 20 years when Suzuki will be the captain
@@samuelmarchyyy63marchand75 Since we acquired him in 2016 missed the playoff 3 times (almost 4 before Covid added them in 10th place) We never won a single round before last year so you did prove that recency bias is real
@@jimrockqc the culture was always changed for the best recenct bias or not
@@samuelmarchyyy63marchand75 A culture of losing? Cause yeah hes a good leader... but what can you lead when you dont even go over 82 games...
@@jimrockqc well they did for the last 2 years and did damage in them playoffs COVID or not you can’t take it away
Édit: more than a team we’re familiar to see choke too
That was an interesting way to pronounce Skellefteå... :D
I dunno - the difference between Weber "taking the Habs to the Finals" and Subban "taking the Preds to the Finals" is not insubstantial (noting that neither player "took" their respective team to the Finals...they had a role, but it's a team effort, and it is important to separate out what the individual contributed to it). The Predators had a formidable defensive corps that year (and over a longer period centered on that year). They had Josi, Ekholm, AND Ellis, in addition to Subban. And yes, Subban had 2 goals and 10 assists in that playoffs, but Josi had 6 goals, 8 assists, Ellis had 5 goals and 8 assists, and Ekholm had 1 goal and 10 assists. So 12 of the 14 goals scored by their top 4 (actually, their whole defense; Matt Irwin and Yannick Weber chipped in 3 assists, but no goals) were not scored by Subban (Subban scored 10 of 39 assists by the top 4). So an argument could be made that Subban was Nashville's 3rd-best offensive defenseman that year (and probably their 3rd-best on defensive assignments as well). If Shea Weber had been a member of the Preds in the 2016-17 season, I think they would have done maybe a bit better than they made out with Subban; Weber that year with the Habs was absolutely TERRIFYING.
Now, let's compare 2020-21 P.K. Subban and 2020-21 Shea Weber. Because that's what this is all about - if this trade never happened, what would the two teams' fates be? And there is little doubt in my mind that there is currently almost no difference between the two. Offensively, they are quite similar now, while defensively, I give the edge to Weber. So the trade helped Montreal more than it did Nashville in the first couple years afterwards, and right now, it's a wash between Montreal and New Jersey. And Nashville...Kunin's been great, and the prospects are still developing...but Montreal did a lot with Weber this year, and Nashville got decidedly less out of its return for Subban. Thus...the edge has to go to the Habs, if for no other reason than Nashville might have hoisted the Cup in 2017 if the trade hadn't happened (Subban was good that year, but Weber was better). Just my opinion.
BRO LETS GO!!! I ASKED FOR THIS TRADE TREE TO HAPPEN AND IT DID!!!
Could you please do the Pacioretty trade tree ? How the Habs got Suzuki, or the Drouin/Sergavchev trade tree
He did it
Subban had a pretty good season this past season
As a Devils fan I respectfully disagree.
As a Swede, I love the pronouncing of Skellefteå ;)
It was probably the $13 signing bonus in year 2 that did it for Weber
it would be nice to see a tradetree that is old and still going
You forgot that one of the main reasons why the Preds opted to trade PK was to create cap space to sign Matt Duchene. He was basically a return in that trade. Great move at the time, however, Duchene's deal is not as good as Preds fans were hoping
YES THANK YOU!
This getting more interesting already. Weber to Vegas for dadonov, who prob gets flipped in March. Kunin to SJ for Leonard and 23 3rd. Should revisit after July 23 draft. Especially if dadonov flipped
Getting Subban for Weber was a great trade for Nashville. He helped them to the Playoffs and got them a great return when traded. Weber is an anchor. A mediocre player at best. Yeah Subban has fallen but still the better player over the time of the trade.
it was for leadership and i mean nashville also traded rights of radulov which also helped montreal in the playoffs the following szn
Hey Steve! I just wanted to say that I find it very cool that you use sign language at the end of all your videos. I am not deaf myself, but am physically disabled. I often find people do not do such things unless they have a personal connection to it. Is that true in your case as well?
Can't stop staring at Steve's right shoulder patch as it reminds me of a Dragonball.
Do a David Legwand Trade Tree
I think there's a lot more to be informed about concerning Weber's deal. It appears to have been a convoluted and complicated affair and needs more discussion. Always enjoy these trade trees. Thanks
Oh boy, that Marat Khusnutdinov pick in this tree that the Wild got is gonna be something special it seems. Still early to tell but guy seems like an absolute steal already! This will surely expand.
why didnt you mention who the two seconds nashville traded back from are
Can you guys Do a Taylor hall trade tree?
The Weber description was one "North Carolina" shy of a Kenny Omega intro
They both won it and lost it at the same time only difference between both sides is one kept the player they traded they both got finals appearances out of the trade
Personally I'd say its a tie, mainly because the Preds went to a SCF with PK and the Habs also went to a SCF with Webber. Maybe give the slight edge to the Habs, since the leadership from Weber was irreplaceable for their youngsters and PK kinda fell off a cliff soon after their SCF run.
And today Montreal's side updates for Evgeny Dadonov!
with weber seriously injured and might not not be back at all. Nashville won the trade. One thing i always asked myself if weber was that good why did nashville traded him and i had my answer after the first year weber played for canadian he had an knee operation witch he had that knee problem since he was in nashville . Nashville saw the oportunity to trade him before it was too late for a younger guy and still get s the benifits of that trade . while weber was the center piece of canadian deffence and the capitan now canadian are praying that weber wont retired.
Great as always! Alex Goligoski for James Neal trade tree please?
what happened with hornqvist in Nashville?
Traded Hornqvist for James Neal. I was not a fan of that trade. After the Cup run, the Preds left Neal exposed and Vegas took him. The Pens protected Hornqvist.
dangles you should really do one on the markus naskund trade for alex stojanov
Taking requests? Paul Coffey from the Oilers to the Penguins. First big trade of the 80s Oilers, and there’s a ton of moving parts to that one.
who else is here now after weber got traded for dadonov
Dadonov for Weber's contract...and very likely to be flipped at the deadline. This trade tree still has a ways to go, methinks!
Do the craig rivet trade from mtl to san jose. The trade tree is still going on
2:31 only $13? That’s a dang it
PK is a very good player but he can't get out of his own way... Remember when he got into it with Crosby about his breath... he was a distraction to his team. Still love the guy and he is a really good person but I thought it was important to mention. Also, Both players have had to deal with injuries the last few seasons, I also think that it is important to mention this little fact. I think both teams got some good out of this trade. Good stuff as always, love the trade trees, keep them coming.
Yes, he woke Crosby up with the Listerine gaff. Sid then put the Pens on his back for the cup win
Turns out the real problem in the locker room was Pacioretty lol
Do the Trevor Linden trade tree. It directly led the Canucks to pick Both Sedins and aquire Luongo plus more . Plus there's the islanders side and Montreal side. I feel like this tree could be massive.
I honestly believe Nashville's run was more about Pekka Rine being too good and it would've happened with or without this trade.
The Preds won the trade. Got the better player (and available player) from day 1 until PK was traded for more assets.
Steve please do the craig rivet trade tree,
Looking back at this. This could be so much bigger if montreal gets assists for dadonov. You should redo this in like 4 years
Can you do the trade tree of Max Pacioretty thx
I would like to see a trade tree where a team got a player back years later. Like Patrick Marleau for example
Start doing Cup Trees, and how Cup winning teams were formed
I was at the 2019 nhl draft
Please do the linden and bure trade trees
you should do the ryan mcdonaugh trade tree between the habs and the rangers
You should do Martin Saint-Louis going to the Rangers
I think you forgot to mention montreal acquired the rights to Radulov
I tend to think Preds traded Subban for Duchene. Well, for cap space that was used to sign Duchene.
And it's a horrible deal so far.
Do the Luongo Florida > Vancouver > Florida trade tree.
Skill-left-ia is actually pronounced She-left-e-o in case it's referenced again in the future .)
Now the Habs just got Dadonov for Weber. Watch him get flipped at the deadline for some stuff that forces an update to this trade tree lol
🙃
I thought you had done all the larger trades. I think you missed one: Heatley for Hossa +.
Holy Crap, I just did a quicky drawup of the Heatly-Hossa trade. *Tabarnak* It involves Hossa, Heatley, Phaneuf, Hoffman, Duchene and..... Andy Sutton. 18 players and 7 picks, and that's only on the Ottawa side.
Can you do the carlyle trade tree
Do a Taylor hall trade tree
