  • Take a seat in the cockpit of a USAF F-4 Phantom II as it arrives at the 2016 EAA AirVenture airshow in Oshkosh, WI. Watch as the aircraft, followed by a second F-4, performs two flyovers of the crowd, one low approach, and lands. These two Phantoms are two of just twenty QF-4s left in the US Air Force inventory, and will be shot down during testing within the next 6 months.

Ghostman It isn't afterburners that are the problem, the F-4 uses afterburners for almost every takeoff. The real problem is going supersonic over the Continental United States. That'll cause some REAL problems.

The first time I EVER saw an F-4 was in 1968 at Beeville, Texas. At the annual air show at the Naval Air Station. Nope, it wasn't the Blue Angels, it was the Thunderbirds. They were flying E models, without slats. That big sucker made some NOISE! And seeing one of the solos making a high speed pass down the runway at 600+ knots, Mach 0.9+++ was amazing. I was hooked.
Years later, I worked on E models at Moody AFB, Georgia. One of them tried to bite my finger off while at Red Flag. I still have the scar and a portion of my left index finger is permanently numb from it. Last I heard, that airplane was on static display in front of the BX at -- HOLLOMAN! I need to run down there and see if she's still there.
I guess the F-4 is the only airplane I ever truly LOVED. As hard as it was to keep them flying, as many times we worked all night long and day shift came in, sat down and drank coffee not realizing we were still out there until one of us came in to get a part or something, as much as my ears are now paying for it -- I love that airplane.
Now I gotta go and wash the onion juice outta my eyes. Thanks for the video.

@@metal_complex4989 And what have you done?
I also saw the T'birds in 1969 at Mountain Home AFB Idaho, later in the 70s, I was a Crew Chief on 66-0295, (same block of aircraft used for the T-birds). 66-0294 was a T-bird aircraft.
It was converted from a "hard wing" (no slats) to a slatted wing, did spin testing and was in the 4485th Tactical Air Warfare Center hosted in the 33rd TAC Wing at Eglin, then I and that aircraft were transferred (with several other aircraft and folks) to the Test Wing (3214th OMS) in the late 70s. I later transferred to Hurlburt Field to AC-130H as an Illuminator Operator in late 1979. My F-4 was transferred to Seymour Johnson, and crashed in California, May 12, 1989. The Pilot was killed but the WSO survived.
So, yeah, "boomer" and proud of every fucking minute of my life.
I have no idea why so many young people are full of hate and rather than have the will to fight for what one believes it worth fighting for, is willing to sit, and whine and do nothing but castigate those who only wanted to put forth effort and create a place for your generation to thrive, yet you piss and crap in that space, then accuse "us" of the condition you have either helped to create by actions, or allowed to occur by inaction.
It's fine. We will all "be gone" soon enough, ,but you will have to deal with the crappy reality you helped bring about, and those in the grave will not hear any of your lament.
But, we did give it our best, as we knew and believed was the thing to do, and we never expected nor asked for anyone's approval while we spent our lives to that end.
      -Peace

I used to help launch and recover F4J's and other aircraft when I was a member of the flight deck crew onboard the USS Independence, CV-62 from 74-77. When I was below deck you could always identify the Phantom when it hit the flight deck, it sounded like a crash and not a landing, the pilots were amazing. The Phantom is my all time favorite fighter because it did everything it wasn't designed to do.

I bought a sweet 1:48 F4J model after seeing a 4 ship fly in from Syracuse for an air show when I was a kid. Was amazed by the noise! Months later I simulated a cat launch by stuffing a B model rocket engine in that F4! Flew pretty stable horizontally for about 25ft until the fence in our yard got in its way! That got Ma’s attention! Nowadays I would have a tiny camera in that thing! I love that kind of stuff Lol.

I wish that the YF- 23 was called the F-4 Phantom III since the F-4 Phantom II did a nice job in the Military, but did not get as many years as it could have. Oh well it is still an Aircraft to remember, in it's history of service.

When I was young I used to hear those taking off all the time from the airbase. Loud as crap! Sometimes they would rattle the windows pretty good when they would do a low flyby. I think they did it on purpose to keep us on our toes or maybe keep us from getting a good nights sleep.

Actually JP5, and smoking until the dash ten J79, then we had carbonized nodules that could FOD the burner cans. The dash 8 greasy black smoke giveaway might have been preferable. But all in, duly notable as the predominant ‘nam workhorse (apologies to the Thuds) and a distinctly manly aircraft. Kudos to James McDonnell for risking his company, he gave us the best “get you home” bird ever to populate a flight deck

If I was given a choice between a huge gulfstream or the F4 it would be the F4. How it must feel to own one and be able to fly it.
Can't imagine how youd find people to maintain such a beast. Maintain the old ejection seats, finding parts etc.

Yes, I forgot that the point of watermarking was to put a giant invasive block of text on the video, thereby ruining it and not to place a subtle marker so as to make the video identifiable as yours if the need arises. 😐

The mighty F-4! So cool. The canopy top was so clear it looked like it wasn't there! What's the normal landing speed on an F-4? Seems like he was going very quickly. Also, I see why it tends to be very windy there being so close to the lake!
    Thanks for another great video!

Spent much happy time in that front seat, as a plane captain riding breaks. As safe as that may seem, on a pitching carrier deck, it increases your pucker factor about a thousand lbs per square inch.

As of 2019, unfortunately, Iran still uses the F4. The USA doesn’t “produce” parts for the F4 anymore. If any parts are needed they’re removed from out of service F4s parked out in the desert at Davis Monthan AFB.

What caused the smoke up by the nose after landing, while taxiing to the back of the apron? I was trying to make some mental gymnastic guesses but all I could think of was - some ducted exhaust being routed up front to clear debris from the nose wheel brakes? I know the Phantom was notorious for being a bit Smokey but that was fresh blue smoke, not cloudy sooty smoke. What caused that?
