    Hi Rob, noticed this a couple of time, think should make you aware. when you measure the current it does not provide the power because you are comparing it to the open-circuit voltage. When you short circuit it to measure the current you essentially get close to zero voltage. therefore the power is in the nano Watts or Pico Watts. The best true reading is to use a load which can give you the real power as it will match the true impedance of the motor.
    It is a nice concept but for the industry to take it on board with any seriousness then the size to power consumption would need to be a lot better. Good experiment but that is about all.
    Consider setting up a load, even a small battery or LED as you have in the past. LED give a constant voltage with variable current and is a good cheap measurement source, measure both the current and voltage at the same time.
    Keep it up though they are really interesting ideas.

      Many electrostatic generators give constant current regardless of output voltage (as long as not sparking over and the speed remains constant). But some generators, I think this one in particular, only output full current when the output is above a certain voltage.

      @@dmitrylavrov5267 The way I like to think of it is that these machines is that they will supply a current at whatever voltage is necessary to push that current through the resistance of the system as long as the required voltage is less than what it takes to for plates the start arcing between each other and effectively short out the generator internally.
      If you design for that, you can make your geny push out a lot of power.
      Simply, it means that these machines have an optimum output and everything outside of that is inneficient.
      What's the optimum output? -> Select your output current via your rotational speed then match the load to force the voltage.

    this is very similar to a hybrid electric motor i designed a while back. works as a induction motor and a generator. perfect for recyling energy and keeping an electric vehicle on the road a lot longer.

    you can stack a ton of these and use a gear assembly to increase turn speed to perhaps increase its efficiency for the space it takes up, its an awesome build, supremely simple.
    although another thought occurs to me, you could hook up some of these to a motorbike with option manual pedalling. manual pedal to generate power and then run the bike off of battery later.

    Damn Rob.. I sat here stunned for at least 75 seconds after viewing this.. This is incredible.. with some ink and plastic you generated a currant.. my mind is a flood with half thought questions and ideas.. I can hardly form the right questions to ask.. energy is so easy to produce "carbon and motion" What is this thing we call energy? why do we struggle so to produce it with grand machines and buildings of giant proportions.. there must be much simpler ways to do this.. I wish I had it all to do over again.. I would (like you) take the road less traveled and explore the grand things we left behind us in the wake of money making.. Carry on my brother you are lighting a fire that might save us eventually.. Some of these young minds out there are sharper than we ever were.. and thy can (if they can over come the desire for money) help the world be free from so many of the things that bind us these days..       Conventional electrical generators are very efficent and really not the bottleneck on cheap power. Something has to make that rotational engergy that's being converted in the first place, almost always a heat engine of some kind (which need lots of fuel), though occasionally something like a wind turbine.
      This is a clever novelty and is potentially shows a really easy to build electrostatics demonstration though.

    Robert you are onto something here. I tried some ideas along the lines of printing electrostatic conduction paths some decades back. I should have pursued it a bit further.
    1. With higher resolution printing, you can make this smaller and stack them (i think some other comments agree with this too) and put them in all sorts of combinations of series and parallel.
    2. At a smaller size and precise balacing (which would be possible with no wires), you can try spinning this with a Tesla turbine at insanely higher speeds
    3. How about reducing air drag by chucking the whole assembly into a vacuum?
    Great one indeed! IMAGINE THAT - LOOK MA, NO WIRES!
    Really interested to see where your fruitful and productive mind will take this. Plasti-carbon generator.

    So.... if this were a huge span, would that increase voltage/amperage significantly? Perhaps you could have multiple rings of printed media on one disc, run in parallel, (or series) to produce much greater values. Stunning!

    Even if this isn't very energy dense, if its cheap enough, one could make huge arrays and put them in the ocean. The ocean has massive amount of energy, the problem is usually that it wears everything down. But with this simple design, theres less to go wrong. See if you can make it water sealed, and if you can think of a way to adapt it to waves. I imagine an anchor, the geny, a springed pully, attached to a float (which the surface carries up and down) but someone could probably think of a better geometry/design.

    Not the most compact energy source, but definitely the cheapest! Im guessing wood would work as well. If very dry, damp wood may not work as well, put as bout 100 in series, and charge a phone, it's amazing, more amazing than starting a fire with two sticks! Awesome work!

      I thought of this too, I'd love to see a sample try even at blowing compressed air at the edge instead of just having a cordless drill at the center. There should be enough force to turn it a lot if there's no torque requirement on it.

      And what are you going to use to generate that 25k rpm? Lets be realistic he's using a cordless drill which is likely somewhere between 12v to 18v to generate 2.1v. That's not a lot out for what was being put in. Don't get me wrong I'm fascinated by this contraption, but at some point reality has to kick in and in order to make this viable the input would have to be some kind of wind or wave turbine, or other naturally occurring energy source. I'm not sure your going to get that kind of input energy from these. Still it's great to see real people trying alternative forms of energy generation, and the rate at which we're going through the planets resources we need people like this, so good on him for experimenting and I wish him every success.

      @@badgerint the drill is just to see what the top end output would look like. In practice, after you hook several of these together, you could hook it up to anything that turns a wheel: water, wind, a bicycle, whatever.
      This is just a minimal base concept device meant for testing out some ideas. You don't want to overcomplicate things at this stage, just target the unknowns being investigated. In this case the questions being asked isn't "Is the power output more powerful than the drill," it's "Does the ink have the capability to replace the metal parts", "How much greater or less will the power output be?", "How fast does the wheel need to turn in order for the device to generate just enough of a noticeable power output", "Does turning faster generate enough of a power increase to be worth the effort to maximize spin in later interactions", and possibly get a rough estimate as to how long the ink will remain intact? Is it more or less durable than metal.
      That's why you WANT to use a drill at this stage. You need a reliable driver so you can do the math property on the unknowns being tested at this stage The actual driver would be a separate build that needs to be developed for its own optimizations after its own unknowns have been investigated. Once that's done you can do integration tests with the two. The only thing the two need to communicate to each other is that they are working on the same dimensions. This device was built with an axle that would fit the drill. Any device using the same axle dimensions can also be used to turn this iteration of the device if need be later on. But all that is very far down the line from what has to happen at this stage.
      Sorry for the length of this reply. Please don't consider it a rant, rather a pleasant mind dump info overshare :)

    In a small way your making the basis of a Whimshurst Machine which used additional storage capacitors to hold the charge.
    Dielectric charges of the plastic will have a big effect on the output potentials, so experimenting with the disk insulator material may reveal some improvements. Also wider carbon tracks should add more current. Making special shaped patterns to increase carbon ink track surface area, may assist with more current output. Series wired disk outputs on a single shaft to get say 12 volts should not be hard, once the current comes up to a more useful figure.
    As inefficient as it is for real power generation, it may have some useful purpose in micro power applications.

    I been working on my own experiments all day and I kept thinking about this video and just kept thinking about it. My experiment is a plasma generator but I have done a lot of experimental work with things like Vandegraaff generators and latex works great. Instead of just using plexiglass although it looks great being transparent it is not the best dielectric for the job alone. The plexiglass is actually very negative which is great on the negative side but an opposite material is a voltage differences like glass or Teflon the latex can be a mediator see the power of the device you are showing holds it's energy in the dielectric like a film capacitor. So if the rotation wheel at the center is sandwiched between lets say glass and plastic or Teflon and plastic it will improve voltage a whole lot. Later maybe instead of the ink you can use some of your knowledge of graphene to maybe do the stripes with a single layer so that all the carbon holes are filled and discharged quickly and hold more current at a voltage you will probably want the ink only at were your brush makes contact or comes close to the stripes to discharge. Oh well I hope I can be of some help. Don't have to give up on the printing idea also because it's a great idea and the plastic can be coated with the Teflon and the wheel with the latex. Instead of one volt you may get hundreds... Current will be the biggest challenge but it can be done. Nice video!

    While the applications for such a low power generator are limited, I do generally find these sorts of things facinating, particularly if applied in developing countries. Microwatts aren't useful for a huge amount, but for driving small LEDs for navigating in the dark they could potentially be quite helpful and likely save a few broken ankles, particularly if you're already carting loads, such as jugs of water, which is quite common in those areas already.
    A two wheeled dolly with a simple and cheap string pulley could easily get a fast enough RPM to at least provide a little light even without a battery or capacitor. Of course with a decent inline capacitor one could store the energy from the trip one way and use it on the other with minimal losses, though that assumes they'd be returning at night, which is only made viable by having this light in the first place, making it something of a solution making its own problem. Though could be valuable insofar as keeping people out of the midday sun and having portions of their gathered water vapourise off while they travel.

    Without permanent magnets does not necessarily mean without magnetic field. All charges in motion generate some magnetic field. The improvement may come in designing how the charges are isolated, collected, and moved.

    Interesting idea, any ideas on how you can stimulate some more amps on it? As it is static? Different plastic? Or adding rubber strips (from bicycle tyres) in between each painted surface. Maybe poles will be more isolated and the charge will be more concentrated? Very nice 🤔👍🏼

    The only downside I can see is the brushes wearing away the ink. i.e making two parts that are moving, have electrical contact and not producing wear. I was trying to think of ways to avoid that but sadly I realise I'm not that smart lol. Obviously a 'frictionless' static motor just becomes a wheel once the friction is lost :P . Then again if they can be made cheap enough, they could lbe seen as disposable motors that you would replace when they wear out and then recycle them. Definitely food for thought, which is what I know this channel is about. You got me on this one :D :D

    Probably a good idea to use multiple compact discs and use a compact disc motor to drive it . That should make it very easy to drive and if you paint the discs with graphene oxide you can use the laser scribe engraver to create all the pickups and conductors! 👍🏻 i wonder if the discs are over lapping each other if the effect is the same ?

    C-motive is developing electrostatic motors. The transfer medium matters. You need a higher dielectric strength to get more power

    Maybe if paint was like silicon, therefore every other painted in strokes of opposing directions (p-type paint and n-type paint) might then give an AC output.
    Maybe if instead of the breaker / buffer line in ink, a line in electrolite ink?
    You might have made a large version of what is realy happening to elements within an electronic componant- be it a battery, capacitor or any other....

    I love conductive ink, but it’s so expensive, at least the small tube I got is. I like this design as I can see it placed in a hydro solution somewhere remote. I don’t see how the components would receive wear. Very nice passive power, even if the power density is low. 👍

    How about doing this in layers using a Tesla turbine configuration??? Maybe we can boost up the voltage and and amperage to do some work and use capacitors and and a few transistors and if you can bring it to the amperage of a small battery and hold that steady enough so the voltage doesn't drop to less than 1.2 volts... I am low balling it and I think it can be done to do a lot better. Great video! Love that you shared it.

      15,000 of these in parallel that are also in series with another 15,000 will be enough to power one LED if the voltage and amperage dont decrease under load. Considering it takes about 1.7 volts and about 15 mA. This makes 1v at 0.0001 mA

    This video reminded me of a Wimshurst machine someone made that was roughly a 4ft disk as the base. It produced 750-1000kv of electricity... unsure what the current draw would be, I assume not much.

    You can get almost a full volt by a gentle hand crank? Think about it, between this and the graphite dry cell, you can basically make a hand mill to generate 2H and 2O with. That's kind of mind blowing, even if we're talking low output.

    A utron is something that you may find interesting in a contrarotatation brush type pick up between two discs,info related to antigravity device!:)

    Nice..but you're using copper and magnets in any kind of motor used to turn that..maybe stack multiple discs and use wind or water to turn. Nice work to think about..glad you're bringing an ancient idea back to life so to speak.

    I would like to see you do some experimentation with a faraday disc. You could introduce a high voltage static input to the faraday disc, so the output will be high voltage AND high current generator, putting out more watts, then what is being used to rotate the machine. 🤠👍⭐⭐⭐

    instead of using neutralizers with brushing tip can we instead connect opposing plates with reed switches that will close with magnet? so that we'd get rid of brushes all together. what's the potential between two plates ready to get neutealized?

    There are so many ways electrostatics can be adapted to produce workable voltages with currents able to power everyday devices.
    I am reminded that lightning itself is generated from static charges, there is a lot of power in a single bolt of lightning so static electricity devices have huge potential.
    Use gears, uses stackable versions, whatever, just don't lose sight of the potential.

      agreed. mate also the high voltage can be used directly for lighting for example and in electrostatic motors - personally I believe electrostatics needs more research

    have you heard about shadow effect generators?And try out your graphine ink for this phenomena. A differential set up by light and shadow creates a voltage (in a silicon wafer coated with gold i think it was)

    Will the results differ if wooden disk are made? I have wood but not the plastic you have.

      I am not sure about wood mate it becomes conductive at HV I source a lot of my plastic sheet from scrap I find laying about tbh - might be worth just collecting some

    Morning Dr Rob. Once again another winner, who'd have thought it, bit's of spinning plastic and carbon ink, I am before a supreme being
    Watching your films makes me think about Mr Tesla in the 1900's and all the amazing high-voltage, high-frequency stuff he did in his labs, he destroyed his New York one after cutting experiments with metal girders and high voltage.
    He moved to Colorado Springs to study the conductive nature of low pressure and built the largest ever Tesla Coil, 15 m in diameter which did strange things all around like artificial lightning up to 135 feet long.
    Sparks sprang from waterline taps when touched, lightbulbs within 100 feet glowed, sparks jumping between peoples feet and the ground when they walked along the pavement.
    He also destroyed the dynamo's in a power house 6 miles away due to the high frequency currents which set up in them.
    It would be pretty cool if you could perhaps try to make one out of found stuff, after viewing many of your different topics I've become a bit of a disciple and frequently worship at Roberts temple of tinkering. I haven't yet got into the inner sanctum (special video's), that's only for the anointed ones (frequent viewers) and would probably fail the many 'Kung Fu' type trials that one must do to enter the brother/sisterhood.
    In actual fact you'll probably find that you have quite a female following, have you an algorithm for those statistics?
    I enjoy listening to talks with regional accents and like your voice but for the first time there was one bit of dialect challenge for me, I had to go back and listen about 3 times, ''painted with a paint'' (2:48).

The thing about Tesla is he did experiments with particle weapons, a rail-gun and something that partially destroyed his NY lab. At one time there was a love interest so it'll be interesting what they cover in the film.
      The FBI got all his paperwork so there's no telling what they found and kept. . Incidentally it's funny hearing all the background sounds and I reckon you could probably get a bit of revenue from Yodel for the free ad space they got when you made the chimney spinning generator the driver left his van in shot.
      Also, could you please give me a contact # for the firm that sells those things as one of them would be much needed.

    With if you do something like a spiral shape painted lines, maybe fibonacci, something that will allow all of them to have a longer track on the disk as possible and compact well together (symmetrical). Your pickups on the outer edge and the naturalization bar only contact the most center of the disk, would that make a difference?

    Out of curiosity, is there any good place or book to read up on the principle and operation of this kind of thing? I ask because google has failed me, and punching in 'Dirod' or 'Dia', 'Die', or any other variations defaults to 'Droid', and Electrostatic Generator searches mostly brings up Van De Graaffs and Wimshursts machines. I know the basic principles here, but I want more relating to this specific operation. Any help would be appreciated.

    I wonder if one could put this together as a bladed design to allow for a wind-ed generator? do you think you'd have problems with the airfoil design in keeping appropriate contact with the brushes? Would carbon brushes work the same? Soooo many great ideas! Yet again you amaze me RMS! Thanks!

      maybe - there would be a fair deal of 'bounce' but to be honest it wouldn't take much to build then you wouldn't be guessing - you'd know
