Sea Kayaking for Sea Caves - Pakayak

  • This trip, we took our Pakayak to go sea kayaking to explore some sea caves in Hong Kong. I've been around this area but never really kayaked to the sea caves and I've heard there are some gorgeous sea caves around this area. This area can get quite rough for sea kayaking and we checked the conditions many times before heading out but as you know, the sea conditions are never predictable.
    Our sea kayaking mission was cut short and unfortunately could not see any save caves but fortunately, we explored other areas that were calmer and was pleasantly surprised!

    That Pakayak is holding up pretty good in those choppy conditions. Good rule of thumb, if you aren't comfortable, don't paddle it... there's always a next time. You brought up some good points.

    Good call on heading back - stick to your intuition my friend. Like that saying goes: better to be safe than sorry. I kayaked one day when I knew better not too (windy and poor visibility) - I ended up putting my friend and I in a dangerous situation because I was too proud to admit that we shouldn’t go (he was a new paddler). I will never do that again!

      Thank you! Really appreciate it! Sometimes I feel that I disappoint people when paddling in larger groups as I am usually the one who says no to proceeding into some areas as I think about other paddlers who don't want to raise concerns. I hope they appreciate my concerns (and I think they do!) :)

    This is great. Awesome scenery by the rocks, very good and mature judgement call by you to stay within comfortable safety limits. That seemed like it could've gotten dicy after a while. Those waves also always look much calmer and smaller through the GoPro! Too funny and a special experience at the end with the goats that don't know why shy means.

    No worries. It takes a bit to get back into choppy waters. I was unacclimated after paddling my short, wide 12 foot boat early in the season and then hitting some rough waters in my 22.5 inch wide Romany. Took me about 30 minutes to feel steady. 😂 If going out a distance we always make sure we know wind and wave conditions and take a marine radio which has a weather channel running constantly.

    • @Fishaholicboy
      @Fishaholicboy  Před 2 lety +1

      For some reason, I just wasn’t feeling it that day but we can always go next time.
      The Romany is so beautiful.. how’s the cockpit space for your legs? I was researching the Romany and I might be too heavy for it.. can I ask your weight? You told me before you were 6 foot :)

      @benthekayaker Před 2 lety +1

      @@Fishaholicboy I have the Romany Excel (bigger boat). It’s a beautiful boat. But I’ve had issues with it as I’m on my second boat with them and the second one has the same sticky resin issue around the underside of the cockpit. So I’ve moved on to a P&H Virgo and love it.

  • @qajaqhongkong
    @qajaqhongkong Před 2 lety +2

    The north east side of "that island" can be dangerous even the wind level is just 3~4 (Beaufort number), especially you want to go through the cave. Make sure you have proper equipment (like helmet), skills (capsize and rescue in rocky shore and rough sea) and partner to support. I won't recommend not to paddling in windy condition, but treat it as extreme sport instead of recreational sport.
    Always know the risk and decide whether to take the risk.
