  • Well what a day it was! We got home seriously late and I really wanted to give a proper in depth recap on the race itself so here it is! Let me know if this is a video format you like and I'll try make it more regular with all races going forward. Not only do I go into how the race went I talk a little more about why I did it in the first place and my history with the Bristol Track Club 5K. If you are still reading this description...     That was a great race Phily, I know most of us can only dream of times in that range!
    I've quite a few club races/events coming up that aren't my main focus - nice to see that this kind of thing can be worked into training without derailing training :)

    Well done Philly and good luck for your Marathon! 😊. I do like your style of Presenting btw, we get a sense of how it feels to run to your potential and to push through pain etc, then run a Warm Down, then the 2 Mile repeats…. Awesome! I myself used to run well but not at your standard and now I’m the wrong side of 50, so my best is behind me. Your videos however brings back the feelings of performing well and they are so inspiring, it’s what makes me return to parkrun on a Saturday morning, so I just wanted to say‘Thanks’ and carry on running and loving the Grind. 😊

    Thanks for this race debrief Phily - it sounds really well organised - I thinks it's great that they made it so that Ciara would get to cross the line first and also that there were pacers. Hopefully other race organisers will see this video and it might give them some ideas. What did Daniel's watch think about his massive 5k PB performance? :) Hope you're enjoying St. Moritz.

    Amazing. If I can comment quickly about Odd Down playing fields (where the event was held), I grew up in Odd Down and the fact that events like this are held in Odd Down warms my heart. It's a fantastic asset for the district and I hope it continues to develop!

    I think it can always be worth sharpening up your legs over the shorter distances when marathon training. I know Jake Smith has said on numerous podcasts that he wants to get quicker over the 3k, 5k and 10k so that he can deal with and match any surges that happen during a marathon and tbh it makes a lot of sense

    Love ur work Philly!!! Such a solid day of running! My gosh!!!
    I know it’s all relative to where ur at with ur own running, but I just did my first ever HM yesterday…& I’m absolutely shattered. My legs are completely, totally & utterly trashed (but I did run my little heart out) 🤣Can’t even imagine marathon training, let alone racing in the midst of it all…ur incredible! (although u did raise a point I will remember about racing during training for something bigger…for well & truly (way) down the track!😂).
    Any advice for absolutely annihilated legs???🤣🤣🤣

    I thought the 16 min pacer was incredible… I guess there are not that many people who can pace you of any gender! Nice to hear the support was helpful!

    Well done, and extra Kudos from me for reporting in miles. Km pace means nothing to me, partially from being half American and also over 55. (Marathon training/racing expressed in km particularly winds me up. "LOL" 😊)

    nothing like competing infront of a cheering crowd. years ago I played the austrailian tennis circuit. best match ever I played was at melbourne park a crowd of about 50 sourounded the court but ontop of that there was work going on at margeret court arena . behind us up on the platform workers were building the roof and they went on lunch break during the match and the real cheering started and the heckling it was awesome it was like a us open crowd my self and my opponent(the secnd seed) played one of the matches of our lives I lost in a tight one but it was electric. in the 90s tho I did a stint of big city road running races and triathlon. the problem I had was crowds didnt seem to attend so much in the 90s in adelaide australia except two particular races. city to bay and island to bluff. for most races there wasnt much crowd if you crossed the line in the top few which was my case most the time. so the finished runners tended to become the crowd for the other runners that finished later, the lower the placing the bigger the crowd and cheer which was actually pretty cool just would have been fun to get simular atmosphere for thos of us up front(not complaining tho:)... times have changed tho and now it seems and a lot more peeps get out on course to spectate a lot of races. everywhere even park runs can get spectators.

    What is meant by 'taper'? Like to think myself as a lover of the grind, but have never heard this before in my running circles 🤷‍♀️

    Might be a bit of a weird question but to anyone who runs (bc feels weird to ask this directly to Philly lol) why would you choose to wear the bikini style shorts over the full coverage ones? I used to wear the bikini ones for dance and it was just constant adjusting and messing with the fit after certain moves. I imagine whilst running it would get really irritating for me. Is it less restricting or something?

      100% would be less restriction. I run myself, and the less I’m wearing the better I perform. I don’t race or anything but if I was racing I am certain I’d prefer the smaller shorts/brief.

    AND is British people should use miles.. what are these K’s? Our road signs are in… Miles. Car mileage… Miles.. If someone asked a K runner how long is a marathon? I’m sure then they will say 26.2 miles 😬😬

    To anyone out there reading this - I need your advice!
    I have a grade 1 muscle pull and am 1 week out from doing London. I know I am fit enough to run, as my base is about 50-60 miles/ week… I feel like tempting it should be okay if I just rest until then?
    Plan is to just go on 1-1,5h swims daily to keep Fitness up…

      I’m assuming if your base miles are 50-60 per week you are a fast (as I think of it anyway ) marathoner, 3 hours? I have run a marathon on a 80% healed injury (I’m a 5 hour marathon runner ) and of course I didn’t get a pb but I really wanted to finish it especially as I trained for so long for it. London marathon is legendary plus ridiculously difficult to get in so I really didn’t want to miss it! I just made sure I rested the week before, swimming and gentle walking. I don’t recommend ever running on an injury BUT just telling you what I personally did.

      @@TheMjsPrincess omg thank you so much!!! Yes I was planing on a 3,5h marathon but you’re absolutely right about London being so hard to get into. I’m just gonna go and have fun, try not to think about the injury until then and just make sure I try to recover 🌺 can I ask how it went afterwards? Like did the injury flare up again?

      @@justmeemi6350 weirdly, it didn’t flare up again! So just honestly take it easy this week, stretch, drink loads of water and take it easy on marathon day, especially in the first half, because if you need to finish the second half in pain it’s not fun 😭😭 (that was the story of my second London marathon I injured my knee 18 miles in and had to drag myself the last 8 miles lol) wishing you all the luck in the world at London!!!! I did Brighton marathon this year as I didn’t get in to London this time. Xx

      Well done! That's a great time for a first half. If you're fairly new to running (first couple of years) you could make some really big improvements too if you keep working on it. Mostly I hope you enjoyed the race, you'll never have another first half 🎉🎊🏅

      @@Stevenc1984 Thanks! First time I trained consistently for a race. 4 months based on info from the book 80/20 Running.
      Next time I will not be checking my Garmin pacing strategy so often but I guess this comes with experience 😅
