  • This video is meant to deinfluence you from feeling like you need XYZ new gear to start running! While these things are great for their own reasons, they dont define if youre a “runner” or not. If you run, youre a runner!

    as someone that works at a running specialty store, I really really appreciate this video. obviously, there is certain gear that I believe is highly beneficial (especially if you are dealing with specific aches & pains while running) but you would not believe the amount of people that come into my store and insist that they are not real runners because of the reasons that you mentioned. it always blows my mind, especially when their statement is something along the lines of, "I mean, I run, but I'm not a RUNNER, I don't do marathons etc." it's like they think they're not qualified to shop at a running store, or maybe that I'm going to shame them for not having done a marathon? which could not be further from the truth. even someone running a mile a week is doing more than a majority of people and yes, is considered a runner!
    on the flip side, I also meet individuals who come in as a very novice runner, perhaps not even looking to race at all and insist that they need the Vaporfly or something comparible because the internet/their friends told them it was the best shoe or what the pros wear. like you said, a carbon plated shoe is not at all necessary, but it could potentially be harmful for some people, too. racing shoes like the Vaporfly are not meant to be everyday trainers! they will break down much quicker and do not have the structure/support needed for every day training...... again, depending on the person. lol sorry for the rant but just wanted to say that you are much appreciated!

      That makes me so sad! That’s good you’re able to speak encouragement to people at the store and give them the reassurance that they are a runner!

    I get what you're saying Bri..and I agree with you 100%!! However, some runners like myself find it exciting and fun to try new technologies to help with my running journey, whether it be carbon plated shoes, new Garmin watch, fancy foam roller, a cool-looking singlet, etc. Some of it doesn't help but a lot it does! I think if you have the money, it's nothing wrong with you investing in yourself and your favorite hobby!

      I totally agree that it can be really fun to get new stuff! I’m not opposed. I just mean you don’t absolutely need it.

    I'd like to add something very important about doing local 5K or even half marathons: community! Last year I did a local half marathon that only had 200 people, all locals, and made 2 friends from it. At the world majors, there will be 50,000 people you're never going to see again.

      Yes! The local races are such a fun vibe and it’s your community so people you can meet up with and run with later! Love this!

    This is brilliant!
    I have been running for 3 years and only just got a running vest (pack) I did not take into consideration the additional weight - mine is from Amazon £30. Carbon trainers are bad for your shins long term (I think). Running trainers that support your gait and running style are the best, as they are individual to how you run. I buy expensive ones but only replace then when they have holes in. I don't have energy snacks, as they can effect my stomach when running. I live on Carbs, so I don't want any when running.
    Running glasses are essential because tiny flies are attracted to runners and want to attack, therefore really impact on the fun of running.
    Good music is essential.
    I have stopped monitoring my runs, as I think it takes the pleasure out of running and I am not competing.

    Awesome video. I definitely fell for almost all of these things at the start of my running career.

      @BriBurkeRunning  Před měsícem

      Right? The way they market them feels like you NEED them to be a “real runner” which is so not true

    My boyfriend has a running vest that he uses for via ferrata and trail running, sometimes I steal it if I'm going to stop at the grocery store on my way home from my run. Gotta say I love having all the pockets.

    I do not "run" I only jog and my speed is too slow for almost all youtubers/influencers. I do use running vests(amazon cheap ones) when I feel like it even when the "run" is under 1 hour for convenience as it is easier to carry my phone and and other things. When I do run for 1.5-3.00 hours I take the vest as it is easier to carry water and snacks in it. As for shoes, i wear anything cheap even walmart brands. Even wore flip flops for 5 K runs. I do like my my garmin forerunner for pacing.

      Please give more info on the vest. The weight of my samsung phone pulls down my shorts 😂

      I got a 7liter one recently for cheap, and I'm glad I bought it. I would run with two bottles, one a handheld. I was always fumbling and dropping them at races. Sure, I couldve continued with the two plastic bottles I was using, but its much more comforting that everything is secure.

    I love my running pack great for up to 3 hours. I just bought my dog his own pack since my runs are getting long enough that I can’t carry the water for both of us.
    If anyone is wearing carbon plates in the pace group I’m with I will laugh. We’re way way too slow for that.
    GU makes so many yummy flavors! I’ve finished runs just because my last gel is chocolate or salted caramel.

    I would probably choose the watch out of any of the items mentioned. The rest are at best unnecessary and potentially even counterproductive.
    The financial cost of the world majors is not a barrier for me but I have little interest in running them. They are entirely a marketing concept. I roll my eyes at people flying to Tokyo just to jog around for a while. So wasteful.

    • @BriBurkeRunning
      @BriBurkeRunning  Před 19 dny

      That’s an interesting take, I definitely see where you’re coming from but the hype of the world majors looks so fun that’s what’s enticing to me
