    I really like the Captor X. I use the attenuation function more than the IR features, especially for recording. The IR cabinets sound decent, but I find they lack the presence and clarity as a mic’d cab with my attenuated amp - that’s my experience at least. I record metal and always quad track 2 panned left 2 panned right, my AI is the Scarlett solo and has only one mic. I guess my question is does the captor x split the mono signal? Will I be loosing tone/ signals if I just record multiple tracks and pan them on my own. I tend not to use stuff like reverb and if I did I could just add it in the DAW. Just spent around 700 bucks for the captor x and everything I need and realized it was only stereo out. Hope I don't need to fork over another few hundos for a new AI.

    I'm curious what the settings were on the 100 watt. I am building a 100 watt plexi and am a little concerned that my Captor X may have a problem handling it as they put out more than 100 watts at volumes past noon.

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  Před 6 měsíci

      I never crank my volume to 10, that's just asking for all kinds of problems with and without an attenuator. I usually have the vol about 6-7 which is where the overdrive sounds best to me ( bass usually near at min). True, it will put out more than 100w but where on that dial will vary from amp to amp. If you have a way to test the output when you've completed the kit, this is ideal. The Captor X does have a thermal protection that will mute the sound if it senses more than it can handle. Thanks for the question!

      @@hawg427 I've got a similar setup using my THD Hotplate as a load box and sending the line out from there into the main input of my HX Stomp unit, loading effects and splitting it into a stereo signal and using a separate cab IR on the L and R channel and a different reverb on each side too so I can do the old van halen trick of having a near bone dry left side and super wet right side as well as stereo chorus and delay. Sounds REALLY good on stage sending that out of the mains and the cab on stage dry.
      The HX is set to have foot switch chorus, delay and a volume boost for leads. It works really well but the captor X looks like it gives more control over the voicing and that's where, despite some really good IR's, I can't seem to get the HX dialed in exactly how I want it to sound. I've tried using an EQ on both signal paths to tweak that but it doesn't sound right.
      That Boss Waza loadbox was also on my list but man alive that price tag hurts.

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  Před 4 lety +4

      Timothy Pashé It depends on the amp, -38 was a whisper on the 22W Fender but still fairly loud with a 100W Marshall, definitely not whisper! A master volume amp with these two steps would be ideal.

    • @sowhulljnr
      @sowhulljnr Před 2 lety +1

      @@AndyDemos that's good, I'm looking for a solution for my 1979 Marshall JMP 2103 100w master volume combo (recording, attenuation and/or headphone use). I was concerned that after listening to this that the steps in attenuation are way too severe. Either it's loud enough to blow your head off or is whisper quiet, there didn't seem to be much compromise in between so I have been hesitant to buy. However, I find the UA OX or BOSS TAE a bit expensive for what I would use it for. This would be a sure winner if there were, say 5 steps of attenuation with smaller jumps between.

  • @Nightwinflyer
    @Nightwinflyer Před rokem

    Hi Andy, when using the Marshall, did you have to engage the input pad to keep it from going into protection mode? If so, did you also have to keep it dialed back for the same reason? My non-master volume 1959 Plexi clone is too much for my captor without the PPIMV engaged and set at no higher than 6.

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  Před rokem

I have some nice amps but they seldom work their way into my home studio recordings. If I were to use the TwoNotes with a real amp going into my DAW, and then use the DAW (with Helix Native) to add effects, would it sound considerably better then the amp sims and get me back that analog amp sound that I am missing?

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That all depends how loud you turn up the amp, if you play it at 10 that’s probably putting out more than 100w which is the limit of the Torpedo Captor X. Here’s a great article about that. No comment on the PA-100, I would not use one myself.

      When he's moving the mics and stuff around that is the software. It cuts back and forth between his mic and the software. It can be your room acoustics or you might have not great monitors. But that's why so many people will do a mix on monitors and then take it to their car to actually hear it.

      @AndyDemos  Před 3 lety

    I am a little confused. Are the IRs coming out of your speaker cabinet? For example, can I make my single 12 cabinet sound like a 4 x 12 cabinet straight out of the speaker? Or do I need a separate audio channel to run the cabinet sims? Would it be possible to plug the sim into my amp return, perhaps?

    • @AndyDemos
      @AndyDemos  Před rokem +1

      IRs only run direct, they don’t come out of the cabinet. This is how most of these amp attenuators work (OX, Two Notes, Waza) you can choose lower volume of your own cab or bypass it and use an IR. If you wanted to amplify the IR signal you’d need some kind of power amp/PA and flat monitors. Hope that helps!

      AndyDemos they might feel a certain way, but when you’re dime’ing them and reducing the sound pressure from a load box, those el34s are running at full capacity and wearing out quickly! Those tubes aren’t built like they use to be, I have seen those tubes pop 5 minutes after install, with a perfectly operating bias voltage! You should at least rip out two of those 4 tubes, change the speaker impedance and rebias. At least that way you won’t be burning as many tubes up. As well, half the power and you can attenuate 3dB less on the load box and get the same performance

      VoxPathfinder15R That’s some good tips! Personally, I never dime my Marshall with or without an attenuator. I just play at the level I’d play live, which is vol 5-6. I’d definitely notice a change in headroom if I pulled two tubes.

    This product is an tube and amp killer in my opinion, if you have an expensive amp don't use this product! Be warned they don't give refunds nor repairs and the product is to unstable for live performances!

      Sorry to hear you didn’t have a good experience with it. This wasn’t my experience. Firstly, there is a 2 yr warranty on the unit. How did you find the attenuator to be unstable live? It should be said that ALL attenuators allow the amp to be cranked up but that is not healthy for the life of tubes and components that could get overheated over long periods of time. I always use attenuators to play at a typical stage volume and then knock the dB down to a house friendly volume.

    They never tell the real truth or should I say they don’t offer any less then they have to. “Having fun” yeah me too. Paid over $600 for this paperweight. Won’t connect to blue tooth. No on answered the phone when I needed help and the software locked up and wouldn’t download where I needed it to, which is so shitty. E en these reviewers are selling you. I didn’t notice until the unit I was sent turned out to be an expensive POS. This quagmire acting like it’s so much fun when I had the complete opposite experience. First time using Two Notes and frankly what’s the hype all about. Re
    Return to update: I can’t even log on to get to support. Says my address needs to be this certain way. This crap is going back on Monday. I’m not the odd man out here folks watch what you get,

    -38 db is a nice way to blow up you vintage amp 😂

      Attenuators do not harm amps, it's the action that people take when they use attenuators: stressing the amp by setting everything to 10! I just played at my normal sweet spot on the Marshall which is vol 4-6 and it didn't know the difference. Thanks!

      "Affordable" is relative to peoples income, but for music equipment it's not that expensive. Especially considering the competition (OX box) is TWICE the price.

    "If it's boomy, you know, you could kind of back off 120..."
    Dials 120 all the way down, then comes back up to a higher setting. LOL!!! Fat n' thick, just the way I like 'em.
