      Ha! I got their promo e-mail on this today....seems like a great tool, tho I doubt I'll be needing it anytime soon while I stick to my humble (yet wonderful) Boss Katana MKII. I was shocked to learn that it only requires power for the virtual cabs and IRs. Even when it’s not plugged in, it still functions as a load box and attenuator for your amp and cabinet. That’s pretty handy. My amp already has an XLR output that I send to the DI, so I don’t have to worry about powering the Captor X on every time, unless I need the virtual cab/IR feature. The load box and attenuator are just always there working in the background, even when I forget to power it on. Very cool.

    Nobody so far has mentioned that in order to play this box so that no sound at all comes out of your speaker you would have to plug the speaker out of the load box to a dummy resistor load.
    The 3 levels of attenuation are not enough and not suitably positioned, maybe 5 presets 5db, 10db, 20db, 40db and full off would be nice.

    I live in a smaller apartment in downtown Victoria and play with a a couple of smaller tube amps. Knocking 20dB off my 25W mini rectifier is great for evening use and the headphone output is great. I really need to pick up an XLR interface, but my computer is so far from my amps.
    I've been eying up a used 100W amp recently and now I'm wondering if the -38dB attenuation is going to make it useable at home and still get the amp into its sweet spot. I don't really want to drop a grand and then not be able to use it. Tough decision.

    @CargoShorts7 Před 4 lety

    Great video man! I'm completely new to the world of IR load boxes and attenuators and have recently started researching them to get the most out of my tube amps at home, particularly my vintage ones. How would you say this compares to the Boss Tube Amp Expander? Does the TAE justify double the price? Ultimately, I am looking to record at home, but I know there are still plenty of times where I just want to sit in front of my amp and play through its own speakers, but have the amp running at its sweet spot. Is the Captor X good for that or should I maybe consider spending the extra money on the Boss for its attenuator? While the Captor X looks great for recording, I don't know if I want to fiddle with the app and run the sound output through monitors or headphones every time. Ideally, I'd like to be able to record my amp at its sweet spot, play silently when I need to be quiet, but also still crank my amps and play through them as they are too. Thanks for the help, cheers!

    Hi Darrell, recent subscriber to your channel and loving the content! I mainly use my Kemper to record with - mostly because of the noise issues you allude to with running a valve amp hot. However, I do own a Peavey 6505 which I have occasionally recorded with an e906 and SM57 and *loved* the results. For ages I've been thinking about getting a load box/attenuator so I can crank my 6505 whenever I want and this Two Notes Captor X looks like the ideal solution. However, I have one quick question for anyone that understands these things - I've noticed that previous similar Torpedo products were sold separately, each with a different ohm rating (4Ω; 8Ω; 16Ω). I'd always assumed you bought the model(s) that matched your amp's output rating? Does the Captor X just come in one version and can this accept any ohm input from an amplifier? Thanks for any help!

      Anyone?

    • @s.millington1512
      @s.millington1512 Před 2 lety +1

      The Captor X comes in two versions, 8ohm or 16ohm. You probably know this, but generally, always match the impedance or go one step higher. The 8 is safe for 4 or 8ohm, and the 16 for 16ohm of course. The three attenuation settings might seem limited, but are well chosen and effective. Full, smaller venue, or bedroom levels; it also sounds great though GOOD headphones for completely silent practice as you are listening to the output to DAW. If you love your 6505, do it a favour and get it a Captor X. Pretty much everybody can find a use for this little gem, and fall in love with tube amps again. I have two Traynor YCS50s (combo and head) and several others getting good exercise ;-)

    How do you work the ohms for it? Have the laney ironheart 120w amp which is I think 16 ohms but my two cabs to into the 8ohms set up, want the two notes but don't want to risk blowing my amp

    My peavey 5150 II has 120 watts so this unit will not work unless they offer a 100 + watts model.

      It would still work as long as you don’t dime the Peavey. The magic is available at anywhere above 60% master volume anyway.

    There are better options, go for a weber handmade attenuation. Couldn’t careless about the recording nonsense. For amp attentuation its severly limited by the restricted single impedance option.

    I’m really thinking about getting one for live use? Recently I’ve been using a modeler on my board which sounds fine but not quite there for me. My tube combo and mic setup is no longer appropriate and too heavy to carry. So was thinking getting a tube head and this. What do you think of the practicalities on this device live?

      Hi, Catherine I was using a Tone King tube amp combo for practice and live performances. The Tone King people built a head cabinet for my amp so I could swap the amp components to a head configuration. I picked up a Suhr Reactive Load IR box and now I'm using that straight into the PA for practice and live performances. I chose to go this rout because I wanted to maintain the characteristics of the tube amp while still having the benefit of using my pedal board. If you decide to go this rout you'll have much more versatility, great tone and a more compact gear situation.
      I honestly do think you will be disappointed with this setup in any situation.

      Yes, that would be a great setup! You'd just have to be fine listening to it through stage (or in-ear) monitors Instead of a traditional amp/cab :)

    Have you tried the Harley Benton PA-100? They're $63.

    No one EVER demos the “attenuation” with a real cab…
    Are we just to take ones word that it sounds good? Hmm…

      Hi!
      All your amp controls (eq, gain) all still work and shape the tone :)

      @@DarrellBraunGuitar but that question is for example i plug guitar in to the capturer sound, if im recording my sound how i heair, if i plug the headphones it will still recording the sound?

    • @StringsOfCrossroads
      @StringsOfCrossroads Před 4 lety

      Junior 1385 yes you will hear the sound through headphones or studio monitors while you playing and the outputs will go to your audio interface to record what you’re playing.

    I just got my first tube amp, and it’s a combo. Would this be an option? It does have an output for hooking up cabs

    Bout time lol. We don't need modelling amps...we need stuff to make tube amps more usable.

      It’s awesome...having both. I use my kemper stage for all my practice sessions until a week before the gig (portability), then full amp/cab for the couple of sessions then at the gig.
