  • Many predict the South China Sea could soon become the scene of a showdown between two super powers, with one third of global trade passing through it.
Month after month, an increasingly violent battle for dominance is being fought in its contested waters. But why is the sea so disputed?
Sky's Data and Forensics correspondent Tom Cheshire explains.

The idea that a third of the world's maritime trade will occur on the good will of a particular government, especially one that routinely weaponises trade even if it feels just upset at any criticism, is unprecedent and will be seen as unacceptable economic risk by many governments.

A war with China would definitely effect the whole region, but to say that other countries would join on China's side due to infrastructure ties, or even indebtment, is a huge stretch to put it lightly. Especially considering the strict neutrality of nations like Singapore and Indonesia. As well as already existing defensive ties between the United States and many of these countries. China is hemmed in by their rivals, and lashing out isn't helping them make new friends.
China grabs economic influence whenever and wherever it can, but has little to no real military allies. Even their so called "friends without limits" like Russia, and their neighbor in North Korea have knives at their backs, and we've even seen these limits in the Ukranian conflict. Convenient friends against the world order, but not much help for coordinating in a global conflict. Unlike the United States and their Pacific allies as well as NATO
