      You could have manually started the vehicle by using a small screw driver on the ignition switch.
      Would have saved you a lot of time and is easily accessible on the steering colum. Have done this many times when the key and cylander rod fell out of ignition switch which appears to have happened. Thats why the key didn't return to the run position.

    Easy check on if you're getting the signal to start from the key is check the smaller wire going to the solenoid on the starter for voltage. Use your voltage meter - Key off = 0V. Get someone to hold the key on = about 12V. Then you know the problem isn't in the vehicle - it's a problem with the solenoid or the starter. If you tried using a screwdriver across the terminals on the solenoid and it still didn't turn over, then it's a bad solenoid or the starter. Great that you're teaching your girls to do mechanics for themselves - every young person (both sexes) should know the basics at the very least so they can take care of their vehicles themselves but also not get taken advantage of by shady mechanics.

    Somebody at GM had the ingenious idea of wrapping the exhaust right around the starter, I had to replace a solenoid, and I've heard about others doing the same thing, you have to wait until the engine cools down until it will crank up again. Other than that, those 350s are great engines. Beautiful young ladies, I bet their parents have to constantly chase off the young men that are hopelessly in love 🙂

  • @hayneshvac2
    @hayneshvac2 Před 3 měsíci +3

    My best guess, or where I would start would be the safety neutral switch. The old GM trucks had the safety neutral switch on the steering column in the column shift design. This means that it doesn't matter where the ratchet shifter is, as long as the column shifter location is correct for the safety neutral switch. As close as the ignition is to the old column shifter location, I wonder if it got bumped the last time it started...either way, best wishes, hope it all works out. Great video, thank you for sharing.

    I would check the column shifter and see if it is all the way up , the park switch is probably still connected to it in the column and it would stop it from starting if it isn't in the right position. If thats not it, see if you have 12v on the bendick's wire at the starter when the key is turned, if it doesn't, then it probably is the ignition switch in behind the key tumblers is bad, It didn't look like it was springing back when y'all turned the key. I would be careful of that froor shifter because i bet it will start in any gear, because you aren't using the column shifter which controls the key safety switch

    I usually end up dropping the ignition electrical switch off of left top side of the steering wheel and use a flat blade screwdriver and start the truck, and i say that because I have several auto to manual and manual shift three spd to automatic transmission steering column trucks why i suggested the manual shift transmission steering column because the blower motor whining shows the truck is getting power.

  • @Quiet-storm
    @Quiet-storm Před 3 měsíci +1

    First thing is to check the battery connections before doing anything with the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch. A poor connection at the battery can give you power in the cab but wont be enough for when the starter tries to turn the engine over. Of course also check the battery cables themselves.

    Neutral safety switch. Should have put the transmission in neutral and tried to start it. If the shift linkage is slightly tweaked, the truck thinks it's in gear and disables the starter circuit. And with someone doing a homemade column to floor shift conversion, they might not have wired that up correctly.

    Hank, Last I recall, these trucks had an ignition switch attached to the steering column. The key tumbler just moves a rod that slides the ignition switch to the needed position. If that switch is not adjusted correctly, the rod can't slide the switch to the start position. Since the key didn't spring back from the start to run, i suspect the switch screws are loose and slid too far down the column.

  • @danielclapp636

    Like others have mentioned, where that has been changed from column shift to on the floor maybe you will have to wiggle the column shift part to get safety switch to work to start truck. Pull up on column shift thing where lever was and try to start truck. Also, if it does not have a safety switch on the floor shift, it may start while in gear. Good video and two beautiful young ladies.

    Just started the square body series.
    I had a ‘79 F150 short bed. Had it all lifted but did not upgrade the steering box. Eventually the bigger tires tore the steering box off of the frame. This was 20 years ago, ensure steering and brakes are upgraded to handle the larger tires. Nothing worse than taking turns and the steering box is half working.
    Also had the same steering wheel, not the same as steering with a normal sized wheel. Nothing g wrong with it, just some getting used to.

    And they are a whole lot of fun to play with in the field in 4x4, and for the rear end noise make sure it is not a bad rear u joint or carrier bearing or one of the other u joints that could very well be what the rear end noise is

    Just a bit of useful advice for messing with vehicles that have been sitting around with no hubcaps or no lugnuts on the wheel lube the threads of the lug nuts and the lug studs because transmission fluid doesn't freeze, anyway the lug nuts will go back on alot easier, and I have had several gm square body trucks usually k20 and c20 trucks but oh well.... I also had a carmine dark red and frost gloss white 74 chevy Cheyenne super c10 long bed 2wd as a sofmore in highschool and my junior year freshman year i had a two tone light on top lower dark mint green 74 dodge d100 club cab short bed adventurer trim flatbed truck...

    Wish you and the girls the best of luck with the truck seems like a decent project ive drove worse shape round eye and 81 -87 doghouse which is what is on the front of the 75.. and why it doesn't have a inside hood release that was a option for the higher trim level gm square body truck for 1979 and the truck is a 1975, but for 1980-1987 they used a interior hood release, and the 1979 option inside hood releases looks like a ring welded on the end of the hood latch, the starter solenoid could be busted i guess and i have always used it as good advice as to not be sitting on the road somewhere to just go ahead and if it is swapped out to hei and it is a 1975 so it should be from factory put a brand new ac Delco ignition control module in the distributor and i say that because i have had iffy luck with parts store brand ones and have gotten several vehicles that had weird ignition issues when running or wouldn't run at all and it is sometimes the ignition control module, and another thing to look into the sector rack is what the ignition switch rod is connected to inside the steering column on the back side of the ignition key cylinder is a sector wheel it is a chunk of plastic well if they get brittle it could break and then that would not engage the ignition sector rack to push the indent on the ignition switch on the steering column so that is probably where id start diagnosing the issue mess with the shift collar moving it up and down and see if it is keeping you from engaging the ignition switch to the crank position and if you don't get anywhere there drop the steering column pull the bottom center dash metal collar trim panel and access the two steering column collar mount plate nuts after removing the bottom of the dash metal panel that plastic piece you already took off is screwed to, and after you lower the steering column up on the left side towards the firewall is a couple of small bolts i believe like 11/32 that is what holds the ignition electrical switch to the steering column it should spring forward when you loosen the bolts pull it up off the rod, and use a screwdriver or i guess a small pick tool would probably work too, but i usually use a medium size flat blade screwdriver put it against the hole in the switch where the rod was and try to get it to engage the crank function on the starter,if you have issues with the park neutral start switch for testing purposes just unplug the purple plug from the switch at the firewall on the top of the steering column and use a jumper wire 10 guage or so to jump both sides of the purple plug that should allow the truck to start regardless of what gear the shift collar would have been in hopefully this helps y'all
