    Finding that sweet spot on the brake pressure was always the challenging part for me. If we were paving uphill, i didnt really need any brake pressure but if we were going downhill or on a straight away, i always worried about my brake pressure. Sometimes id step on it a little too hard withiut even realizing it. You just get focused in the hand signals and stuff and you dont realize you sent the brake pedal to the floor.

      Thanks for that information. Never did asphalt. I always wondered about that part with the paver pushing and driver not rolling out on him and was it all just a matter of applying the right pressure during the pave. Thanks

    • @davidgrant2772
      @davidgrant2772 Před 5 měsíci +1

      @Revelation_22_13 it takes practice and communication. They'll tell you if you're about to roll out or if you have too much brake pressure. You'll know if you're holding the brake too much if the paver is trying to push the truck and they're not budging the truck. The dump guy will usually holler at you if something goes wrong. Even experienced truck drivers roll out. It sucks but just get out and grab a shovel and learn from your mistakes.

    I used to haul asphalt. We would always prepare chicken in aluminum foil, with BBQ sauce. Dig a whole in the hot mix in the truck, bury it where we knew where it was. Then drive to the jobsite. By the time you got to the jobsite that chicken was cooked to prefection and falling off the bone. Time to eat. It usually took about an hour to cook, depending on how hot the asphalt was tha we got from the plant.

    • @rickjohnson1632
      @rickjohnson1632 Před 5 lety +2

      Johnny Phillips “ mist” haha. I “ soaked” the spreader pan, the hinges , the coal Shute and esp the bed of the truck along with corners. I would have puddles of fuel oil laying on the bottom of that bed. I hauled ALOT of loads and mix . I never really did any state jobs . Not that it would have mattered . I still would have sprayed my bed down with fuel oil . Old habits are hard to break ✌️

      Johnny Phillips I was a six wheeler driver for a long time . I hauled so much asphalt I could practically sit in the seat and the truck
      Would drive its self to the plant. I never hauled any mix in a semi. However, I’ve done a lot of excavating and working with a grinder in a semi. It doesn’t much matter to me . Semi or six wheeler . I never had a complaint about my driving. I’ve also done 48 and 53ft work . I mostly did intra or tri state sh__. I did containers for about 2 years . I can do that too.

Depending on how bad the mix was sticking I would at some point pull over and soak the sh__ out of it with fuel oil . Did it 100s of times ✌️

    • @drewgardner81
      @drewgardner81 Před 5 lety +4

      Shuttle buggy is a “Road Tec” term. That company developed the “Shuttle Buggy” which is essentially the same thing as your referring to. The shuttle buggy remixes the asphalt to prevent segregation of the mix due to temperature variations. It also will hold a little over 30 tons of mix if I’m not mistaken which allows for continuous paving without truck to paver contact which prevents bumps and comprises in the mat quality

      Usually about 12 to 15 lb of air pressure on the brakes depending on the size of the paver is enough to keep the truck against the paver to not roll out because the weight of the load will push the truck right out and u will loose all your load in front of paver but not so much that the paver can't push you
