    I invested in a pallet buster and the air locker de nailer and I regret not getting it sooner. If anyone works with pallets a lot go ahead and get them. I can break down a pallet and take the nails out in less than 10 minutes. And if you plan on running them through your planer get a metal detector. Drill out the nail holes because there’s little pieces of metal in every hole whether you see it or not. Make some sawdust. Daniel is way ahead of us😂

      Hi Barry, I was just wondering why there would still be metal in every hole if the nails were removed? Thanks

    • @barryhalstead9299
      @barryhalstead9299 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@MTNurse because when they nail the pallets together they use a nail gun and the strips of nails that they put in their nail gun uses wire to hold the nails in strips. So when you pull the nails out 9/10 the small pieces of wire is inside the hole. Use a drill bit the next size up from the size hole you have and when you drill each hole out take a look at what comes out with the sawdust. I was shocked at how much I got from drilling out the nail holes. And even as small as the bits of metal you get it will still chip your planer blades. Lesson I learned the hard way.

    • @MTNurse
      @MTNurse Před 2 měsíci

      @@barryhalstead9299 Oh, thanks for all that information. So, if you have to go back and drill out all those holes, is it really any faster than just pulling out each nail by hand? Thanks

    If you are only pulling 2 to 3 nails per runner per slat they are fairly new pallets, they sometimes have oak and even maple in them. The size of an ordinary pallet slat will vary on the same pallet from 3/8, 1/2 to 3/4, only heavy pallets will all be 3/4 of an inch. Most pallets have been repaired many times with so many nails. I just cut between the runners,not getting many pieces longer than 16 inches. I saw a video that referred to special made nice pallets, new easy to pull apart for videos. Pallet wood is a challenge to use.

    That table is gorgeous. I really like the look of those legs.
    I really wanted to get into building stuff with pallets because I have a source to get them free. after spending a few days ripping stuff apart, I looked into getting things to speed up the process (pallet buster, and the pneumatic nail remover). I ended up just giving up on pallets all together not only because of the extra labor that goes into preparing your wood, but a few people brought up a great point that I hadn't considered. You take a risk of damaging your saw, planer, and other tools with metal that may be hiding in them. More importantly, you have no idea what chemical(s) or other toxic things may have come in contact with or soaked into the wood.
    I've been much happier using fence pickets. They're still relatively inexpensive to use and require much less work to use them. end pricing ends up being the same. More for materials & less for labor, or less for materials & more for labor.

    I've been working with pallets for years its a great source of wood and you can actually get free hard woods out of them, but a bit of advice, if your going to plain or cut anywhere near a nail hole get a hand held metal detector and scan the board. The reason is the nails they use are coil nails and the wire that runs through the coil gets stuck in the wood. Trust me I screwed up a brand new set of DeWalt plainer blades on a oak pallet board.

    There are a lot of pallets that have some beautiful grain in them. Up until November everything I had made had been out of pallets. It's a whole lot of work though. Always few hours to break down 4 or 5 pallets. Sometimes I can get the board off without breaking but most of the time not. It's all about how slow you feel like going. That table is beautiful though.

    I have about 8 pallets sitting in my front yard. I've been thinking about what I'm gonna do with them. I really like this idea, and thinking of ways to spin it to make it my own! To make it easier (I'm 70, so always thinking how to make it easier! LOL) I'm going to cut it along the edges, then all I have to worry about are the nails in the center! I think I want to make the legs out of the three rails, and going to come up with something unusual and maybe quirky! Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, Daniel!!!

You have get hard woods broken down fairly quickly or they'll split so badly, they're difficult to salvage.

    Hey brother 2nd comment of the day on a different video haha, Last time i said i found a trick to help get nails out and i used a drill bit a little bigger then the nail and it made a world of difference, Well working with some pallet wood i bought a 20 dollar roatary tool and it has a cutting head, I just cut the nail sharp end right to the wood then use a spring nail punch not sure if you seen them, but no hammer and 2 second job, but use the nail punch to hit the nail out, use a hammer to get straggerlers easy job.
